Acetaminophen-Induced Proliferation Of Estrogen-Responsive Breast Cancer Cells Is Associated With Increased C-Myc Rna Expression And Nf-Kb Activity., Samantha Lynn Gadd
Acetaminophen-Induced Proliferation Of Estrogen-Responsive Breast Cancer Cells Is Associated With Increased C-Myc Rna Expression And Nf-Kb Activity., Samantha Lynn Gadd
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies demonstrated that acetaminophen-induced proliferation of estrogen (E2)-responsive breast cancer cells via an estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent pathway (Harnagea-Theophilus et al., 1999). Studies reported here tested the hypothesis that acetaminophen stimulates proliferation of E2-responsive breast cancer cells by activating ER as a transcription factor and inducing expression of E2-regulated genes. ER binding assays demonstrated that acetaminophen does not compete with E2 for ER binding in MCF-7 cells, indicating that acetaminophen does not bind ER in a manner similar to E2. Ribonuclease protection assays compared the effects of acetaminophen and E2 on expression of selected genes (c-myc, c-fos, cyclin D1, bcl-2, …

High-Temperature Stress-Accerated Grain Boundary Oxidation Mechanism On Inconel 783 Superalloy, Cezar Cisloiu
High-Temperature Stress-Accerated Grain Boundary Oxidation Mechanism On Inconel 783 Superalloy, Cezar Cisloiu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Under high temperature and stress (as in the front of the crack tip) oxygen can diffuse to the grain boundaries and react with the constitutive elements of the alloy producing brittle oxide layers, which cause the embrittlement of the material, and a brittle elastic, intergranular failure. Crack growth tests were performed on INCONEL 783 three-point-bend specimens in air and controlled oxygen atmosphere at 650°C and 538°C on two types of specimens, with and without beta-phase. Initial elastic crack growth was observed at test specimens without beta-phase. The specimens with beta-phase didn't reveal elastic crack growth. Based on the results of …

An Expanded Model Of Adolescent Caregiving: Its Efficacy And Relation To Adolescent Problem Behavior., Lesley Anne Epperly Cottrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite annual fluctuations in the exact percentages of adolescents in the United States who are involved with problem behaviors such as alcohol consumption, unprotected sexual intercourse, and illicit drug use over the past decade, a large proportion of youth have been introduced to, and continue to engage in these behaviors. In response, researchers and clinicians have continued their search for variables that are correlated with adolescent risk involvement including variables within the family context. Previous research has linked parental monitoring (i.e., knowledge of an adolescent's whereabouts and activities) and parents' appropriate modeling of behaviors to reduced adolescent risk involvement. Problem …

A Study Of The Effects Of The Posse Technique On The Perceptions Of Pre-Service Teachers In Teaching Learning Disabled Students., Kim H. Rotruck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study seeks to establish a benchmark on the perceptions of pre-service teachers (interns) in order to understand the factors influencing successful teaching of disabled students in the general education classroom. With the extensive body of research that indicates general educators request more training to teach disabled students, this study begins with four interns and generates information about the effects of a specific technique designed for teaching learning disabled students and observes the interns' perceptions as they teach learning disabled students. This technique predicts, organizes, searches, summarizes, and evaluates expository text (POSSE), which is characteristic of many effective reading techniques. …
Trauma, Criterion A, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Scientific Utility And Definitional Validity., Kenneth Joseph Ruggiero
Trauma, Criterion A, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Scientific Utility And Definitional Validity., Kenneth Joseph Ruggiero
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research examining the relation between trauma and psychopathology has contributed to the identification of individuals who, following exposure to various potentially traumatic events (e.g., domestic violence, rape), may be at high risk for post-trauma difficulties (e.g., sleep disturbance, heightened displays of hypervigilant behavior). However, the validity of the definitional characteristics of trauma has not adequately been explored. For instance, few studies have targeted the extent to which reports of perceived life threat, injury, or peritraumatic responses of “horror,†“fear,†and “helplessness†are associated with various forms of trauma-relevant responding. Yet, reports of such subjective emotional responses and event characteristics are …
Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong
Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study presents an analysis of research article introductions (RAIs) written in Thai by Thai academic writers. The analysis is based on 40 Thai RAIs taken from Thai journals in educational and medical fields. The rhetorical characteristics and linguistic features of the RAIs are examined using the CARS model proposed by Swales (1990). The results show that the pattern of studied RAIs supports the general framework presented by Swales but the specific steps in the introductions are less consistent with the model. The Thai writers avoided criticizing and evaluating the works of others. They adopted different strategies in establishing a …
The Transformation Of The Upper Ohio River Valley., Robert Thomas Anderson
The Transformation Of The Upper Ohio River Valley., Robert Thomas Anderson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
European and white American conquest and settlement of the Upper Ohio River Valley during the second half of the eighteenth century transformed the region from Indian cultural domination to white American domination. The region's inhabitants, Lenapes, Shawnees, Senecas, and various other Indian nations, settled the Upper Ohio Valley during the first half of the century and brought their cultures to the region. White settlers soon followed. During this often violent period of frontier contact, whites borrowed from, Indian culture to improve their frontier life, which created a hybrid, or frontier, culture. As the white population increased, they eventually displaced the …

Beyond The Workplace: The Uneven Development Of The Japanese Space -Economy And The Role Of Labor, 1965-1994., Shawn Michael Banasick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite the rapid industrialization and high rates of economic growth that Japan experienced for much of the postwar period, there have been relatively few attempts by English-language researchers to investigate Japan's domestic space-economy at the regional scale. This dissertation examines the process of uneven development in Japan from 1965 to 1994. The conceptual framework for the analysis is a regional political economy approach, combining theories of uneven development with recent work by Michael Webber and David Rigby on regional profit rates in manufacturing and the determinants of profit rate change over time. In addition, insights from the recent literature on …

Alternative Education In West Virginia: Perceptions Of Programs, Leadership And Success., Tammy Kay Brock-Fowler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
More and more students are being labeled at-risk in our educational system. These students are often behind academically, have dropped out of school, or have been suspended or expelled from conventional high schools. In West Virginia in 1995, 4,008 students did not complete high school (West Virginia University Survey Research Center, 1977). Alternative schools or programs are a direct result of a need to provide options to students who cannot be accommodated by conventional public schools. Alternative Education Program in West Virginia is defined as an authorized departure from the regular school program designed to provide educational and social development …
An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya
An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The term quality of life has been described as a vague entity (Grayson and Young, 1994) and conceptualizing it, has proved to be difficult. Nevertheless, understanding how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction is important because these subjective evaluations determine life adjustment and mobility behavior and is the basis of demand for public actions. Additionally, more effective social programs can be designed based on the knowledge of how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction and avoid problems that may result because the perceptions of the planners and policy makers do not always coincide with those of …
The Effectiveness Of Residential Facilities For The Treatment Of Disruptive Behavior Disorders., Michelle Colette Hainesworth
The Effectiveness Of Residential Facilities For The Treatment Of Disruptive Behavior Disorders., Michelle Colette Hainesworth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) consist of four categories of syndromes known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD), and DBD Not Otherwise Specified (NOS). They are the most prevalent disorders in children and adolescents and the most common reason for referral to residential treatment centers (RTC). However, little research exists concerning RTCs efficacy in treating disruptive behavior. The following study attempted to take a comprehensive approach in that it evaluated the effectiveness of an RTC, including the specific treatments that contributed to a positive outcome. The study also took the investigation a step further …

Controllability And Anxious Responding: Experimental Evaluation Using 20% Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air., Michael J. Zvolensky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although emotional control maintains a central role in contemporary models of anxiety pathology, particularly panic disorder, there is little understanding about the ways in which specific control processes alter anxiety-related responding. In the present study, offset control over eight 20% carbon dioxide-enriched air administrations was experimentally manipulated in a large nonclinical population (n = 96) varying in anxiety sensitivity (high or low) and gender. Dependent measures included self-reported anxiety, affective reports of valence, arousal, emotional control, and physiological indices of heart rate and skin conductance. High anxiety sensitive participants who lacked offset control reported significantly greater elevations in self-reported anxiety, …

Eight volunteers requiring four bicuspid extractions for orthodontic treatment were enrolled and each bicuspid was assigned a group. A specially designed plaque-collecting band was cemented on each tooth following the treatment and remained for five weeks. Treatment involved the following: Control (C)-no treatment prior to the band cementation, Pumice-lase (PL)-pumiced and lased …
The Economic Cost Of Fatal Occupational Injuries In The United States., Elyce Anne Biddle
The Economic Cost Of Fatal Occupational Injuries In The United States., Elyce Anne Biddle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Occupational injuries claimed the lives of over 30,000 American workers from 1990-1995 as reported through the National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) surveillance system. Estimates of the value of these lives have been calculated, but nearly all studies present an aggregate value, which sheds no light on the variations in costs for different case or worker characteristics. This project developed a user-friendly computer program to calculate the cost of fatal occupational for exclusive use by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The model estimates comprehensive national costs for all occupational fatal injuries reported through NTOF, nearly $30 billion …

Research is being conducted at West Virginia University (WVU) in collaboration with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to study the mixing that occurs during the refueling of U.S. naval vessels. These vessels employ a series of tanks to both store fuel and to maintain the balance of the ship by taking on seawater as the fuel is consumed. Hence, these are referred to as Compensated Fuel/Ballast Tanks (CFBT). This study is applicable to naval destroyers such as the DDG 51 (Arleigh Burke) class. Previous work by Umbel and Wilson under the direction …
Testing The River Continuum Concept: Exploring Ecological Processes In The Wheeling Creek Watershed., Deborah Ann Carpenter
Testing The River Continuum Concept: Exploring Ecological Processes In The Wheeling Creek Watershed., Deborah Ann Carpenter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The river continuum concept (RCC) asserts that the biological community in a stream system is largely regulated by geomorphological factors (Vannote, et al., 1980, 131). The concept states that community structure in natural stream systems is structured in order to capitalize on the most efficient energy utilization throughout. The objective of this research is to test the RCC in the Wheeling Creek watershed of northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania and to compare the results with those hypothesized under the RCC. One of the strongest criticisms of the RCC is that the continuum assumes an undisturbed stream system. Anomalies found …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis traces an actor’s journey of their craft throughout the process of William Shakespeare’s Richard III. The thesis begins with the manner by which the actor researches the play. The research informs the actor’s choice as to what character he/she will audition for. It then traces the audition preparation and the casting. The research is then reviewed and revised based on the casting of the play. The actor then creates a character biography in order to understand the complete set of given circumstances surrounding their character. The text analysis assists the actor in discovering information about the character specifically …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
On June 6, 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon was the invasion’s planner. Some American officials backed the invasion, because the PLO and Syria had obtained weapons from the Soviets. The United States also had a history of aiding Israel. Nevertheless, America attempted to make peace between Israel and its enemies. The United States sent marines to Lebanon twice. On October 23, 1983, 241 Americans were killed in a bombing attributed to an Iranian-supported group. On February 8, 1984, President Reagan withdrew American forces to ships off shore. This paper discusses three aspects of the Israeli invasion of …

Defining Environmental Theology: Content Analysis Of Associated Literature., Robert J. Jacobus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental theology is a term used often by religious communities describing theological doctrines concerning the relationship of deity and ethical conduct to the environment. After an extensive literature search, an operational or declarative definition for environmental theology was not discovered. The objectives of this study were to establish an explicit and scholarly definition of environmental theology and introduce deoview as a descriptor associated with the term. People have and will continue to act according to their belief systems: this paper has value in understanding beliefs, ethics, and behavior of people and people groups.
