Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurobiological condition characterized by developmentally inappropriate attention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. ADHD is a growing problem in the United States educational system with an estimated 3 to 5 percent of the school-aged population, or approximately 2 million children and adolescents affected. Substantial scientific research has been conducted to examine the effectiveness of stimulant medication as a treatment for ADHD. Little research, however, has been conducted to examine the preparedness of physicians to diagnose, treat, and monitor children with ADHD. The purposes of this study were to: (1) define developmentally appropriate practice and identify practices within planning, instruction, content, evaluation and management which will enhance the facilitation of developmentally appropriate practice; and (2) compare and analyze the five participant sub-groups, to identify similarities and differences among these groups. The sample was randomly determined from the current AAHPERD membership list, categorized, via self-designation, into teacher educators, motor developmentalists, physical education teachers, graduate students, undergraduate students. It was the aim of this dissertation to determine if and how religiousness in family members caring for relatives suffering from dementia affects the mental health of family caregivers. To that end two theories were presented for testing in the form of path models. These theories were based on stress-process cognitive theory as adapted to the dementia caregiver situation. In this theory caregiver strain (mental distress) was thought to be mediated by cognitive appraisal, and appraisal to be influenced by contextual characteristics, personal and family resources, and stressors. This dissertation analyzes the environmental history of Pendleton and Randolph Counties, West Virginia, as it relates to underdevelopment within the broader Appalachian region. Theories of political ecology and reconstructed regional geography are used to gain a better understanding of the intersection between cultural practice and human use of the natural environment. Specifically, three case study locales are utilized in this study to demonstrate local variability in natural resource issues within the Appalachian region. Loosening of total joint replacements continues to be a major mode of failure in cemented total joint arthroplasty. Clinical investigations report failure of the stem-cement interface after total hip replacement may be an important factor in loosening of hip prostheses. There are basically two design philosophies to reduce the risk of cemented stem failure: promote bonding (i.e. pre-coat, rough surface) and promote debonding (i.e. polished surface). Treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) through the use of anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) is a technology that has shown mixed success. Precipitation of solid phase materials, primarily Fe{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} and Al{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} hydroxides, inhibits limestone dissolution by presumably creating a barrier between the limestone surface and the AMD, which impedes neutralization at an optimum rate. A laboratory project was initiated to: monitor geochemical transformations of reactive species ({dollar}\\rm Al\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub},\\ Fe\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar}, and SO{dollar}\\sb4\\sp{lcub}2-{rcub}{dollar}), determine solid phases controlling precipitation reactions, and determine a kinetic model for limestone dissolution in ALDs. This work was conducted to determine the frequency and distribution of stable cytogenetic damage (translocations and insertions) in human lymphocytes using chromosome painting. Included were cells exposed to gamma radiation in vitro and selected individuals from a healthy unexposed California population (n = 27), and a population of Russians exposed during cleanup work the Chernobyl nuclear accident (n = 120) and Russian controls (n = 69). The in vitro results showed that the frequencies of radiation-induced stable aberrations in chromosomes 3, 5 and 6 were proportional to chromosome size. The low processivity of retroviral reverse transcriptase and the lack of exonucleolytic proofreading by retroviral reverse trascriptase contribute to the emergence of virus variants in infected hosts. A result of the low processivity of reverse transcriptase is the high frequency deletion of direct repeats in retroviral genomes and vectors. We determined that direct repeats of 383, 788, and 1333 base pairs delete at rates of 28-40, 85, and 93%, respectively, in one round of retroviral replication. Also, we demonstrated that the propensity of reverse transcriptase to switch templates could be used to reconstitute the neomycin resistance gene and delete the …

The darter fauna in the Elk River, West Virginia, is extremely diverse (18 species); however, few studies exist on its ecology. This dissertation, which consists of three manuscripts, provides data on the ecology of darters within the Elk River. In the first manuscript, I estimated allozyme variation in the Tippecanoe (Etheostoma tippecanoe) and golden (Etheostoma denoncourti) darters, fishes with extremely fragmented distributions. Despite our findings of low variation at 22 loci, frequency differences at Pgm and Pgdh separated E. tippecanoe and E. denoncourti. By coupling the standard reaction-diffusion equations with the hydrodynamic equations, we study the convection patterns in chemical reactions. We investigate the onset of convection and the transition of convection patterns induced by compositional density gradients of chemical wave propagations in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction and the iodate-arsenous acid reaction through direct numerical simulations. We find that in a vertical slab the chemical wave causes the onset of convection above a critical point. The convective flows deform the chemical concentration patterns as well as enhance chemical wave propagation speed. Propanil (3,4-dichloropropionanilide) is a herbicide that is used for post-emergence control of weeds on rice, wheat, and potato production in the United States. The first hypothesis of our study is: propanil significantly inhibits cytokine production by macrophages which may contribute to its overall immunotoxicity. We demonstrate that i.p. propanil exposure significantly inhibited IL-6, TNF-{dollar}\\alpha{dollar} and IL-1{dollar}\\beta{dollar} production by macrophages. Acute oral exposure with propanil demonstrates that both 3 and 7 day post-exposure cytokine production by macrophages was reduced. However, only 7 day post-exposure with the primary metabolite of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), resulted in the inhibition of cytokine production. Therefore, we …

Fifteen male nursing students from four baccalaureate nursing schools in West Virginia participated in this phenomenological study. The phenomena of interest was the lived experiences of male student nurses related to caring. Demographic data was obtained in the interview process. Semistructured interview questions were used in the individual interviews, which were all audiotaped. The methodology used was based on the Swanson-Kauffman and Schonwald method, which entailed the four step process of bracketing, analyzing, intuiting, and describing. Five themes were identified. Large volumes of spent oil-in-water emulsions are produced in the metal-working industry. The treatment of oily wastewaters with conventional membrane separation technologies is limited by the low permeate flux observed at high oil concentrations due to difficulty pumping concentrated solutions at high recirculation velocities. In the high-shear rotary ultrafiltration (UF) unit, disk membranes are rotated at speeds up to 1,750 rpm to generate hydraulic turbulence which scours the membrane surface. Redoxyendonuclease activity was detected in extracts of human neuroblastoma cells using a base-release assay specific for thymine glycol in DNA. The level of redoxyendonuclease activity was more than 2-fold higher in dividing cells compared to quiescent cells, suggesting that quiescent cells may have a reduced capacity to repair oxidative DNA base damages. Cells were synchronized by serum deprivation and then stimulated to enter the cell cycle by the addition of serum to determine enzyme activity at different stages of the cell cycle. The present investigation was based on operant theory. A prospective six-week self-monitoring design was utilized to examine naturally-occurring reinforcing and punishing effects of cardiovascular exercise in a college-aged sample of healthy women. The sample consisted of exercise initiators ({dollar}{dollar}6 months of regular exercise). Seven rewarding exercise effects emerged from factor analysis of the self-monitoring form (i.e., mood improvement, goal achievement, physical performance enhancement, exercise "high", praise from others, social affiliation, and appearance changes). Results indicated that both groups produced similar ratings for the exercise reward factors, but some factors were significantly more rewarding than others to the sample as a …

Approximately 95-99% of soil phosphorous is unavailable to plants, with {dollar}\\sim{dollar}90% of phosphate fertilizers also being rendered unavailable upon application. 2-Ketogluconate (2KG) has been shown to solubilize insoluble phosphates in vitro. If plants themselves could solubilize the insoluble phosphate in the soil, this would greatly reduce the need for phosphate fertilizers. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to examine in vitro and in situ solubilization of insoluble phosphates (calcium phosphate, RP, and iron phosphate, IP) with increasing concentrations of 2KG, as seen through plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) growth and Pi uptake. This paper examines retiree recruitment as a strategy in state economic development policy. The study employs a theoretical framework of policy adoption and lesson-drawing to answer the questions (1) why would a state adopt the policy of retiree recruitment and (2) how is the policy adopted. Three states in different stages of retiree recruitment policy adoption were selected as case studies. Results show that different strategies in policy adoption were operating in each case study state. The present study investigated differences in the conceptualization of death among children and adults with and without mental retardation (MR). Thirty-five adults (17 adults without MR, 18 adults with MR) and 29 children (21 children without MR, 8 children with MR) participated in the study. The study employed a 2 x 2 design with Age and MR as the factors. Participants completed several questionnaires, cognitive developmental tasks, and intelligence assessments. Results indicated that diagnosis of mental retardation was slightly more influential than chronological age in determining participants' responses about death. Clomipramine (CLI) administered to neonatal rats has been purported to induce behavioral abnormalities in adulthood analogous to human endogenous depression (Vogel et al., 1990). The membrane bound enzyme methane monooxygenase (pMMO), is a mixed function oxygenase that initiates the oxidative metabolism of methane in methanotropic bacteria. Copper is required for catalytic activity of pMMO, illustrated by the recovery of pMMO activity in EDTA-inhibited membranes, whereas zinc and nickel had little effect or were inhibitory. Inhibition kinetics, cosubstrate dependence, and substrate protection experiments show that acetylene acts as a suicide substrate for pMMO, binding specifically to a 26-kDa peptide.
