Group III nitride wide bandgap semiconductors have recently attracted considerable interest due to their applications for optical devices operating in the blue and ultraviolet (UV) wavelength regions. These materials were also found to be suitable for operation at high power levels, high temperatures and harsh environments. Some applications of UV photodetectors include chemical and biological analysis, flame detection, and optical communications. In the development of Automated Dental Identification System (ADIS), we focus on registration to align the subject dental regions of interest with respective reference regions. With the goal to achieve high performance for dental image registration, a dualstage approach is proposed which is based on the hypotheses generation-verification paradigm. The registration of the dental regions of interest is the basis for hypotheses generation. The hypotheses generated by using a fast method are verified to retrieve the candidate parameter sets to give accurate alignment of the regions. This research project is a critique of both electronic media effects and socialization for the largely unstudied sect of Old Order Mennonites from the Weaverland Conference. In an initial pilot study, eight interviews were conducted to obtain reasons for rejection of electronic media. Next, the electronic media studied in this study’s survey analysis included cell phones, computers and attitudes toward the internet. The Lancaster Conference Mennonites are employed for group comparison. Formal Total Synthesis Of Carbazole Alkaloids And Attempted Synthesis Of 1-Substituted β-Carbolines., Xiaomei Yu

A mild and efficient route for the synthesis of substituted carbazolones has been developed. This novel procedure includes two consecutive palladium-catalyzed reactions, an intermolecular Stille coupling followed by an intramolecular reductive Nheteroannulation. This new approach was successfully applied to the formal total synthesis of several naturally occurring carbazole alkaloids including clausenol, clausenine, clausalene and glycozoticine. These new syntheses are generally effective and produce carbazolones in high overall yields. In addition, all attempts to apply a similar method to the synthesis of 1-substituted βcarbolines produced impure products.

A method whereby DNA sequences of varying size may be accurately inserted into pre-determined locations within the Escherichia coli genome was developed. Using a binary vector system that takes advantage of either the E. coli RecET enzyme tandem or bacteriophage lambda's Redalphabeta recombinatory proteins, this method has the benefits of being both inducible and self-degrading, thereby offering a level of control to the experimenter as well as alleviating any problems that may be associated with leaving residual DNA in the bacterium. In the present study, joint control training was applied when teaching selection responses to four non-vocal children with autism. This study is a systematic replication of Tu (2001). The children were two males (ages six and seven), and two females (ages twelve and thirteen). The result showed that it was only after the joint tact/self-mimetic/sequelic control training that the symmetrical performance of manded selection responses appeared with no additional training.

A Hands-On Approach To Calculus was a research study designed to examine the use of hands-on inquiry centered teaching strategies in a first semester calculus class and the ramifications of the hands-on strategies. The study used an experimental class, where activities were implemented into the teaching strategies, and a control class, where traditional teaching strategies of lecture of theory and drill were used. Students' learning in the two classes was examined by comparing exam scores in the two classes and by analyzing students' journals from the experimental class. Most water management studies concentrate on the inter-temporal allocation problem or, more recently, spatial dynamics—but not both. While early spatial-temporal studies focused on the allocation of water quantity, this paper presents an approach to water quality analysis that incorporates both spatial and temporal dynamics in a watershed framework. The model developed is an explicit economic watershed optimization model built upon an underlying water quality model where pollution loads are driven by pollution sources and alternative control strategies. In this dissertation, I pursue the constant pressure ensemble approach to elucidate the statistical mechanics of smectic phases of semi-flexible manifolds. I use this approach to consider in detail sterically stabilized phases of semi-flexible polymers in two-dimensional smectic systems. For the first time, the universal constants characterizing the entropic repulsion between semi-flexible polymers are obtained. The thermodynamic limit is quickly approached within this constant pressure ensemble. Src family kinases play an essential role in many cellular processes, including tumor formation and metastasis. One mechanism of how this occurs in through the ability of Src to promote cell invasion by directly affecting actin filament integrity. Src activation results in a loss of bundled stress fibers and the formation of actin-rich podosomes that promote the invasive phenotype through extracellular matrix degradation. AFAP-110 is an adaptor molecule that interacts with the actin cytoskeleton and Src, as well as PKCα. This study is a longitudinal cultural study of the portrayal of the ideal female image in the mass media. The focus of this study was on female objectification and sexuality representations by the male decision maker in the patriarchal society. An excellent example of this is Playboy magazine, whose objectification of the female body as a means of entertainment for men has existed for 30 years. A dataset was compiled of 180 Playboy magazine covers spanning three decades: 70s, 80s, 90s. The Gettysburg Formation preserves the sedimentological record of the Late Triassic – Early Jurassic filling of the Newark-Narrow Neck-Gettysburg rift basin and subsequent intrusion by diabase. The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of emodels when calculating a Bolton ratio. Models from 30 patients from the West Virginia University Department of Orthodontics were measured using calipers and emodels, and the time it took to do the measurements was recorded. Ball bearings were scanned into an emodel file and measured to evaluate whether any magnification was present in emodels. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any differences in the occurrence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with teeth and without teeth. Forty middle-aged subjects were screened, 20 were wearers of maxillary and mandibular complete dentures, and 20 were dentate patients. All subjects were screened via five screening tools: the Epworth Sleepiness Scale survey, measurement of neck size, calculated body mass index, and an intraoral exam visualizing the throat and determining the presence or absence of snoring. The corpus luteum (CL) of ruminants exhibits periods of reduced sensitivity to the luteolysin prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). The CL has reduced sensitivity to PGF2α early in the luteal phase. Mechanisms of reduced luteal sensitivity to PGF2α during the early portion of the luteal phase have been widely studied, with a focus on regulation of cyclooxygenase-2 and components of the endothelin system. The first ovulation in postpartum cows results in a CL that regresses during transition from a period of reduced sensitivity to susceptibility to PGF2α, and there is evidence that the first CL in the postpartum cow is more sensitive …

The aim of the current study was to utilize a structural model to examine simultaneously the relationships among socioeconomic status (SES), anxiety sensitivity, stress, psychological problems, Native American identity, cultural related anxiety, and coping. The proposed structural equation model was tested using AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures). The social stress literature provided a theoretical framework; it suggests that SES-linked social stressors that result in higher levels of psychological disorders adversely affect people from lower SES backgrounds. This study demonstrated that rainbow trout muscle contains at least two forms of the Ca2+-dependent neutral protease calpain along with their endogenous inhibitor calpastatin (CAST). These calpain-system components can be separated with one DEAE-anion exchange column. Rainbow trout muscle calpains are less sensitive to Ca2+ than their mammalian counterparts. We described cloning and sequencing of the rainbow trout calpain small (regulatory) subunit (cpns) cDNA. This represents the first fish and lower vertebrate full cDNA of cpns. Genetic regions that are consistently altered in cancers of both mice and humans indicate regions of the genome that are good candidates for harboring genes that are critical in the development of cancer. Nearly identical breakpoints were identified at 10q21.3 in human melanoma and at the homologous 10B5.1 region in mouse lung adenocarcinoma. A previously hypothetical gene was located within the minimal breakpoint region. The gene was characterized and identified as an immediate early gene with increased expression in several of the tumor cell lines.

Over 43 million women today are nearing or have passed menopause and 21 million more will be entering their climacteric period over the next decade. Cognitive symptoms such as poor memory and the inability to concentrate have been reported in perimenopausal and menopausal women. The Blackwater River, historically an excellent brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) fishery, has been affected by logging, fires, coal mining, acid rain, and land development. Trends in water quality data from 12 sites in the Blackwater River watershed were examined for a 14-year period (1980–1993) using the information-theoretic method and the seasonal Kendall with correlation correction analysis. For most sites (except Beaver Creek), downward trends in acidity and upward trends in alkalinity, conductivity, and hardness were consistent with decreases in hydrogen ion concentration. Dissolved oxygen trended downward possibly due to natural conditions, but remained above biological thresholds. The seasonal Kendall trend …

This exploratory analysis examined the sociocultural parameters of 172 Western North American Indian tribes to determine if patterns would emerge in relation to personal naming practices. Five sociocultural parameters (fixity of settlement, dominant form of polygamy, descent pattern, postnuptial residence, and geographical/cultural area) and four personal naming dimensions (nicknames, timing of naming, name bestower, and naming ceremonies) were selected for analysis. Loglinear regressions were conducted. To create more timely estimates of understory woody plant characteristics, we developed a model suitable for predicting diversity in the understory of forested stands from commonly collected overstory information. We used individual measures of species abundance and species distribution as well as two diversity indices that combine the two aspects of species diversity. Social support issues have not been examined extensively among middle-aged and older lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults, despite evidence that the aging experience may differ between these individuals and same-aged heterosexuals. This study compared the structure (network composition) and function (positive and negative inter-personal interactions) of social support across gender and sexual orientation and how psychological well-being varied as a function of these variables. The increasing amount of easily available genomic data has heightened the importance of computational tools in the analysis genome databases, especially the human genome. In this study, we develop a new methodology based on the suffix tree data structure to identify unknown targets of gene families. We use the identification of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) as a model system.
