Historical mining operations, mostly coal mining, has left the State of West Virginia with many abandoned mine lands that often produce nonpoint sources of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) pollution. This work studied a small tributary to the Cheat River, Lick Run, which has been heavily impaired by AMD through legacy coal mining. Field and laboratory water quality testing verified that Lick Run does not meet Water Quality Standards (WQS). The purpose of this research was to evaluate current stream conditions of Lick Run and to provide means of remediation through passive treatment systems to reduce metal and acidity loads.;Lick Run …

This thesis explores gender and fighting on the college campus. Recent studies that focus on the behavior of college students establish that risky behaviors, such as fighting, occur and are often normalized by students on college campuses (Armstrong and Hamilton, 2013; Kimmel, 2008; Weiss, 2013; Wechsler and Wuethrich, 2002). While these studies concentrate primarily on the role alcohol plays in social situations and in a variety of risky behaviors, they focus more broadly on college student behavior. Synchronization is a collective phenomenon emerging from the interactions of different dynamical systems. Systems with different characteristics adjust their behavior to a common behavior of the group. This collective behavior is observed in many biological, chemical, and physical systems. Examples from different fields include pacemaker heart cells, synchronization of neurons during epilepsy seizures, arrays of microwave oscillators, and robot manipulators. Studies of coupled oscillators have revealed different mechanisms by which discrete oscillators interact and organize to a uniform synchronized state from an incoherent state. It is estimated that 3--9% of women will meet full diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth, with another 20 to 40% being partially symptomatic for the disorder. While precedents and associated factors leading to childbirth related PTSD have been fairly well researched, the postpartum outcomes such as the mother's perception of herself in the parenting role, and her appraisal of her infant's temperament have been far less studied. Other psychiatric disorders have been linked to lower estimations of parental self efficacy and more negative views of infant temperament. "Popcorn workers' lung" (PWL) is a bronchiolitis obliterans-like obstructive disease caused by inhalation of butter flavoring vapor during the manufacture of microwave popcorn. Lung function tests of employees at several microwave popcorn plants revealed that the severity of abnormal lung function correlated with increasing cumulative exposure to the butter flavorant, diacetyl. Recently, the diacetyl substitute, 2,3-pentanedione, has also been identified as a respiratory hazard. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) demonstrated in rats that inhalation of occupationally-relevant concentrations of diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione vapor for 6 h resulted in airway epithelial necrosis and apoptosis in the nasal passages …

Cell migration is one of the crucial steps in many human physiological events and diseases, including cancers. Recent studies have shown that carbon nanotubes (CNTs), like asbestos, can induce accelerated cell growth and invasiveness that contribute to their mesothelioma pathogenicity. Malignant mesothelioma is a very aggressive tumor that develops from cells of the mesothelium, and is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. CNTs have similar structure and mode of exposure to asbestos. This dissertation presents the design, development, and simulation testing of an adaptive trajectory tracking algorithm capable of compensating for various aircraft subsystem failures and upset conditions. A comprehensive adaptive control framework, here within referred to as the immune model reference adaptive control (IMRAC) algorithm, is developed by synergistically merging core concepts from the biologically- inspired artificial immune system (AIS) paradigm with more traditional optimal and adaptive control techniques. One of the most fundamental steps in risk assessment is to quantify the exposure-response relationship for the material/chemical of interest. This work develops a new statistical method, referred to as SKQ (stochastic kriging with qualitative factors), to synergistically model exposure-response data, which often arise from multiple sources (e.g., laboratories, animal providers, and shapes of nanomaterials) in toxicology studies. Compared to the existing methods, SKQ has several distinct features. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of adherence to nutrition guidelines and engaging in regular physical activity on the physical and psychological dimensions of well-being in a sample of middle-aged and older adults. All available sociodemographic indicators were also analyzed in order to investigate potential interactions. A structural equation model was constructed utilizing data from 348 middle-aged and older adults who completed the Health Behavior and Knowledge Survey. Results indicated the model was a good fit to the data, accounting for 40.4% of the variance in physical well-being and 26.3% of variance in psychological well-being. …

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in response to exposure to a traumatic stressor. Although this is the most well known diagnosis for individuals who have difficulties after a traumatic event, research documents numerous difficulties and psychopathology that can result from traumatic events, many of which do not fit the DSM-IV criteria of PTSD. Altering interleukin-15 (IL-15) signaling through ablation of interleukin receptor alpha (IL-15Ralpha) in the IL-15Ralpha global KO mouse has been shown to result in an oxidative shift in skeletal muscle characterized by enhanced fatigue resistance and increases in mitochondrial density. However, the mechanism of this phenomenon is unclear, as IL-15 signaling in skeletal muscle has been virtually unexplored. It has been previously suggested that loss of IL-15Ralpha in the global KO mouse directly results in an increase in muscle IL-15 secretion, and this increase in secreted IL-15 acts on skeletal muscle in an autocrine fashion, directly stimulating pro-oxidative remodeling. Certain assumptions have been made about the relationship between acceptance criteria and student success. However, the assumption that a more successful college student can be determined based on acceptance criteria data was in doubt. The current study administered the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) created by Pintrich, Smith, Garcia and McKeachie (1991) to analyze the motivations and learning strategies utilized by West Virginia students in an Introduction to Psychology course at four public, four-year institutions. Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, was firmly linked to a new subset of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC's) in late 2007. With growing rates of West Virginians affected by HPV-related oral cancers it becomes pertinent to verify that public healthcare professionals of all disciplines are aware of this causal relationship and educating their patients.
