Creating Space For Belonging Within The West Virginia Progressive Movement, Roger A. Jennette
Creating Space For Belonging Within The West Virginia Progressive Movement, Roger A. Jennette
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With the 2016 Presidential election come and gone, political activism within the United States has garnered more attention as political actors on the Progressive Left oppose the actions of the new administration. The West Virginia progressive movement is used as a case study of the national push towards progressive politics. Using participant diaries and a series of longitudinal interviews, this thesis explores the creation of spaces belonging within an activist organization to foster sustained involvement. The analysis points to the importance of creating a sense of belonging and the desire to ‘strive for better’ in a state that is often …
Effects Of Delay And Signals On Choice Between Delayed Food Alone And Immediate Food With Delayed Shock, Forrest James Toegel
Effects Of Delay And Signals On Choice Between Delayed Food Alone And Immediate Food With Delayed Shock, Forrest James Toegel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Much of the research in the area of self-control has examined choice between small immediate reinforcers and large delayed reinforcers, but many problems result from situations in which a single choice produces consequences of conflicting valence: Those in which the immediate outcome is reinforcing and the delayed outcome is aversive. Recent research has evaluated how preference for a large reinforcer which is followed by a delayed shock changes as a function of the delay to shock and how the intensity and duration of delayed shock affects the value of a large reinforcer. The present set of experiments investigated how the …
Optimal Anteroposterior Position Of Maxillary Incisors In Caucasian Males Viewed From A Smiling Profile, Amer Shammaa
Optimal Anteroposterior Position Of Maxillary Incisors In Caucasian Males Viewed From A Smiling Profile, Amer Shammaa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: Anteroposterior (AP) position of the maxillary incisors affects the harmony of a facial profile. Different methods have been suggested to evaluate the maxillary incisor AP position, including cephalometric analysis and soft-tissue analysis. Andrews suggested using a lateral smiling profile to evaluate the AP position of the maxillary incisors. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal AP position of maxillary incisors in Caucasian males using Glabella Vertical (GV), a coronal plane tangent to soft tissue Glabella, as a reference line. In addition, an attempt was made to determine if there are differences in judged facial …
Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan
Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present study examined the effect of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) on peripheral microvessel function in healthy and metabolic syndrome (MetS) rodents, and whether exercise training could prevent the vascular dysfunction associated with UCMS. Our initial hypothesis was that: 1) LZRs exposed to UCMS would have peripheral microvascular dysfunction similar to that evident in the OZRs controls due to a reduction in NO bioavailability and an increase in ROS production; 2) the comorbidity between MetS exposed to UCMS will exacerbate the already existing peripheral microvascular dysfunction; 3) exercise could limit the peripheral microvascular dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress and …
The Impact Of Different Game Types And Sports On College Students' Physical Activity And Motivation In Basic Instruction Program Settings, Yang Song
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background/Purpose: Few researchers have investigated college students' physical activity levels and motivations within university Basic Instruction Programs (BIPs) when students engaged in different games (modified games, small-sided games, and full-sided games) from different sports categories (e.g., net/wall games and invasion games). Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate college students' Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) and motivations while playing different games in badminton and soccer classes. The study also examined how well motivation levels predict MVPA.;Methods/Analysis: Seventy-one college students (57 males and 14 females) from a rural Mid-Atlantic university participated in and finished the study. They came …
High School Coaches' Experiences With Openly Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Athletes, Meghan K. Halbrook
High School Coaches' Experiences With Openly Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Athletes, Meghan K. Halbrook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite reports that there has been a positive trend in perception and treatment of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals in recent years (Griffin, 2012; Loftus, 2001), sport, in general, is still an uncertain, and sometimes even hostile, environment for LGB athletes (Anderson, 2005; Beylin, 2006; Waldron & Krane, 2005). These concerns may be even more prevalent at the high school level, with student-athletes putting a strong emphasis on attempting to develop an independent and positive social identity through group or team interactions (Grant et al., 2014; Taifel & Turner, 1986). To gain more information on coach understanding and perceptions …
Examining The Impact Of A Short-Term Psychological Skills Training Program On Dancers' Coping Skills, Pain Appraisals, And Injuries, Leigh A. Bryant
Examining The Impact Of A Short-Term Psychological Skills Training Program On Dancers' Coping Skills, Pain Appraisals, And Injuries, Leigh A. Bryant
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Psychological skills interventions are often conducted with individual athletes and sports teams in an effort to build mental toughness, prevent injury, or enhance performance. Dancers remain an underserved population in the delivery of sport/performance psychology services, with extremely limited literature addressing college dance students. The dance community has several inherent physical and psychosocial demands, which can promote resilience. However, dancers may also strive to meet these demands by employing unhealthy coping strategies that could be linked to maladaptive appraisals and increased injury risk. The present study examined the impact of a psychological skills intervention program on college dance students' (N …
Evaluating Instructive Feedback As A Maintenance Procedure During Discrete-Trial Instruction, Jessica M. Cheatham
Evaluating Instructive Feedback As A Maintenance Procedure During Discrete-Trial Instruction, Jessica M. Cheatham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Instructive feedback is a procedure that involves presenting secondary targets during a learning trial. The child is not required to respond to the secondary targets, and if the child does respond the therapist does not provide differential consequences. Instructive feedback has been shown to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of discrete-trial instruction for children with autism. We evaluated maintenance of previously learned skills when they were and were not presented as instructive feedback during teaching sessions. We used an adapted-alternating treatments design to compare three conditions, in which previously learned skills were presented as secondary targets five times per week, …
Development Of Ethics Education Guidelines For Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Programs, Kaitlynn Cullen
Development Of Ethics Education Guidelines For Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Programs, Kaitlynn Cullen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Context: Since 2007, much of the literature has determined a need for recognition and resolution of ethical situations in the athletic training profession. Existing demographic studies suggest areas of improvement for athletic training education program (ATEP) ethics curriculum, however, little has been accomplished within the past nine years. The athletic training field has not addressed specific guidelines needed to teach ethics courses or an appropriate curriculum for the undergraduate ATEP setting. Educational guidelines should be developed for ethics education in undergraduate ATEPs. Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop guidelines for ethics education in undergraduate ATEPs. Design: This …

Low back pain imposed huge expenditures to the industry with many days away from work. Despite industrialization, statistics show the number of work injuries, work transfer, work restriction and absenteeism in recent years is still high. Various factors are involved in low back injuries, which make it complicated to deal with. In many industries (such as construction, transportation, and healthcare) low back pain is highly prevalent.;In the current study, we recruited 14 participants to investigate the effect of staggered foot posture on lifting biomechanics and to understand if maintaining a staggered foot posture could reduce spinal tissue loading and its …
Peer-To-Peer Support Responses To Lgbt Suicidal Ideations In An Online Community, Kayla Mccormick
Peer-To-Peer Support Responses To Lgbt Suicidal Ideations In An Online Community, Kayla Mccormick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
LGBTQ individuals, especially youth, are one of the top groups at risk for suicide. They experience social stigma and discrimination which diminishes their access to common support resources, causing many to turn to online communities for support for common issues. This paper utilizes qualitative content analysis guided by the stress-buffering model of the social support theory to investigate the helpfulness of informal social support responses in buffering stress in the suicidal individuals on LGBTchat.net. This model is based on the buffering hypothesis which asserts that persons with high stress and low support will show disproportionately elevated symptomatology, and that higher …
Exploring Staff Turnover In A Large-Scale Ebt Implementation Initiative, Laurel A. Brabson
Exploring Staff Turnover In A Large-Scale Ebt Implementation Initiative, Laurel A. Brabson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Staff turnover in the behavioral health field is a substantial and chronic problem with implications for both agencies and clients (Ben-Dror, 1994). Increased focus on the implementation of evidence-based treatments (EBT) has further highlighted the problems associated with turnover, as EBT trainings are particularly costly and time-consuming for clinicians and their agencies (Cook, Biyanova, & Coyne, 2009). The current study examined rates and predictors of turnover within an EBT implementation initiative designed to assess the effectiveness of three different training models. Data was collected from 110 families, 100 clinicians, 50 supervisors, and 50 administrators involved in the state-wide implementation of …
Players' Responses To And Primary Caregivers' Perceptions Of Authoritarian And Authoritative Coaching In The Inner-City, Renee Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An abundance of research in sport-based positive youth development (PYD) indicates that coaches should be positive, promote autonomy-supportive and authoritative coaching styles, and caution the use of authoritarian leadership, while too often ignoring elements of authoritarian leadership such as discipline and structure. However, most of the studies conducted targeted middle-upper socioeconomic status (SES) suburban, White populations, with little emphasis on the inner-city underserved context. Parenting and teaching literature provides strong support for authoritarian styles in the underserved setting (Hartman & Manfa, 2015; Smetana, 2011). Similarly, the few studies conducted in the underserved sport settings show support of authoritarian styles (Brown …

Helping Individuals Vs. Fixing The System: Distinguishing Facets Of Adolescent Civic Reasoning, Lauren M. Alvis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study examined associations among adolescents' civic behaviors, sociomoral judgments, and welfare- and justice-oriented reasoning. Participants included 721 adolescents (Mage = 15.87, SD = 1.28; 90% Caucasian; 55.6% female) living in a University city in a Mid-Atlantic state. Participants completed survey questionnaires that assessed sociomoral judgments for and involvement in civic behaviors, as well as a free-response questionnaire that assessed justifications for various forms of civic engagement. Welfare-oriented reasoning was defined as justifications that reflected a sense of obligation to address the welfare of individuals in need, whereas justice-oriented reasoning was reflected in adolescents' use of structural justifications, which …
Dissertation: Building And Recovering Trust In The Buyer-Seller Relationship, Christopher A. Nelson
Dissertation: Building And Recovering Trust In The Buyer-Seller Relationship, Christopher A. Nelson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This three-essay dissertation examines how trust is developed and recovered in the buyer-seller relationship. Specifically, the first essay examines how initial facial trustworthiness evaluations subconsciously affect trust perceptions based on an approach-avoidance decision. Findings from fMRI meta-analysis of nine studies supported this theory and uncovered the network of brain regions involved in this process. In the second essay, a grounded theory approach was used to examine trust recovery in the buyer-seller relationship. The results of this analysis indicated a three-step trust repair process is an optimized approach for achieving trust recovery. Contrary to the dominant view in the literature, this …

Staff-Child Interaction Therapy Versus Treatment As Usual In Community-Based Wraparound Services: An Evaluation Of Feasibility And Child Behavior Problems, Nancy M. Wallace
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Wraparound services are a well-known, widely implemented community-based model developed to treat children with a variety of severe emotional disturbances (Clark & Clarke, 1996). Although results have demonstrated some positive outcomes (Suter & Bruns, 2009), significant weaknesses have also been noted including negative findings (Bertram, Suter, Bruns & O'Rourke, 2011) and a variety of methodological limitations (Suter & Bruns, 2009). States have recently begun to examine the empirical basis of wraparound programs to better understand their implementation and effectiveness (Community Data Roundtable, 2015).;The current study examined the implementation of Staff-Child Interaction Therapy (SCIT), a manualized treatment developed at West Virginia …

The purpose of this study was to examine student athletes' perspectives in regard to return to learn following sport-related concussion. Data were collected through an online survey from student athletes; a subset of whom had a history of concussion. Student athletes who reported receiving education regarding the effects of concussion on classroom performance were more likely to report a concussion and receive accommodations for that concussion. Also, student athletes experiencing specific symptoms reported certain accommodations to be more or less beneficial with returning to the classroom following concussion. However, the presence of a return to learn policy at colleges did …
Spread Of False News Stories On Facebook: An Assessment Of Credibility Cues And Personality, Lacie Geary
Spread Of False News Stories On Facebook: An Assessment Of Credibility Cues And Personality, Lacie Geary
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study used a 2 x 2 method to examine the effectiveness of credibility cues on Facebook and how the personality traits neuroticism and openness impact sharing behaviors across cues of different shapes and colors. Findings suggested the color red increased cue noticeability, however, overall a low number of participants noticed any of the four varying cues across conditions, indicating that the fast-paced scrolling nature of online mediums prevents users from noticing credibility cues. Future research should examine the differences in pace of scrolling and information intake across different generations. This information might be useful to media outlets to help …
The Effect Of A Leader's Emotional Intelligence On The Subordinate's Intention To Whistleblow, Xin Geng
The Effect Of A Leader's Emotional Intelligence On The Subordinate's Intention To Whistleblow, Xin Geng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two experiments in this dissertation examine the effect of a leader's emotional intelligence and its interaction with other constructs on the subordinate's intention to whistleblow. Results from the primary experiment indicate that when the leader is not involved in the observed accounting fraud, the subordinate is more likely to whistleblow to the leader if the leader has high emotional intelligence or high group prototypicality. The relationship between leader emotional intelligence and subordinate whistleblowing intention is stronger when the leader has high group prototypicality and is mediated by the subordinate's perceived leader-member exchange, trust in the leader, and job satisfaction. These …

The Investigation Of Motor Primitives During Human Reaching Movements And The Quantification Of Post-Stroke Motor Impairment, Erienne Virginia Olesh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Movement is a complex task, requiring precise and coordinated muscle contractions. The forces and torques produced during multi-segmental movement of the upper limbs in humans, must be controlled, in order for movement to be achieved successfully. Although a critical aspect of everyday life, there remain questions regarding the specific controller used by the central nervous system to govern movement. Furthermore, how this system is affected by neurological injuries such as stroke also remains in question. It was the goal of this thesis to examine the neurological control of movement in healthy individuals and apply these findings to the further investigation …

Graduate student-faculty relationships can impact student program completion, career path, attrition, success, and overall experience. With the increase of African graduate students in the United States, there is a need to understand the relationship dynamics between these students and American faculty. The existing research studies on African students tend to focus on student experience with discrimination, language difficulties, cultural adjustment, financial issues, isolation, and loneliness. This qualitative study explores the experiences of African Francophone doctoral students using a single case study and narrative approach. This research finds African Francophone doctoral student-faculty relationships are multifaceted, and tainted by uneven power in …
Think Twice Before Hitting 'Send': The Strategic Uses Of Information In Marketing Channels, Pui Ying Tong
Think Twice Before Hitting 'Send': The Strategic Uses Of Information In Marketing Channels, Pui Ying Tong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the growing problem of information overload in the context of marketing channels. Information overload occurs when shared information requires more mental resources to process than the mental resources available to the receiver. This research offers strategies to attenuate information overload and examines the impact of information overload on channel outcomes. Strategic uses of information are proposed and conceptualized as a sender's alteration of information volume, content, and/or timing to assist a receiver in processing information. Hypotheses are developed based on the normative perspective of communication from the organizational communication literature. Data from 244 salespeople are analyzed using …

War On The Mind: Trauma And Coping Among Union Soldiers And Veterans, Kathleen Anneliese Logothetis Thompson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
"War on the Mind: Trauma and Coping in the Union Army," is a work of social, cultural, and military history and examines experiences of mental trauma in the Union Army during the war and among veterans in the post-war period. Without our modern definition of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Civil War soldiers had a very different view of how they were mentally experiencing the war. By looking at soldier accounts and the records of insane asylums it is clear that soldiers did have experiences of trauma and insanity during or related to their wartime service. However, those same asylum records, as …

Civil Religion And Ontological Threat, Matthew R. Arp
Civil Religion And Ontological Threat, Matthew R. Arp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dyadic conflict research within international relations is largely reliant on the analysis of differences in regime or leadership characteristics as a catalyst for conflict. This dissertation challenges traditional scholarship through the introduction of a unique approach that examines more fundamental differences between states. These fundamental historical and cultural differences, which are enshrined in a states' civil religion, offer insights into the behavior of states during crisis. The three primary questions of this dissertation are the following: What role does societal norms and cultural values have in threat perception? Why do states practice restraint in some crises and escalation of belligerence …
