Role Of Patient Empowerment In Enhancing Medical Care Outcomes: Development And Validation Of A Framework., Krithika S. Venkataraman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The overall goal of the study was to assess the characteristics of empowered type II diabetes patients and delineate an operational definition of empowerment. In addition, the study explored the role of empowerment on diabetes self-management, quality of life, and selected health resource utilization of these patients. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, "empowerment" was operationalized into two domains: "first stage" and "second stage." Additionally, it was found that these two domains had three subdomains each. The "first stage" of empowerment subdomains were: (i) instrumental beliefs, (ii) outcome expectancy, and (iii) perceived self-efficacy; while the "second …

Fifteen young adults ("young generation" daughters), thirty middle-aged adults (15 "middle generation" mothers and 15 "middle generation" daughters), and fifteen older adults ("older generation" mothers) were assessed for the quality of their attachment to each other as well as their attachment to a romantic partner. Participants viewed a videotape in which a female actor, representing the participating family member, engaged in various emotional discussions (positive, neutral & negative). Participants were asked to imagine that the attachment figure was speaking directly towards her. …
The Effects Of A Parental Life-Threatening Illness On Children's Adjustment., Christa M. Holland
The Effects Of A Parental Life-Threatening Illness On Children's Adjustment., Christa M. Holland
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mental health professionals are increasingly examining psychosocial issues of individuals with medical illnesses. Research has demonstrated that when the medical patient is a parent, the entire family experiences the crisis and impact of the diagnosis and treatment. Despite these findings, few studies have examined the impact of a parental life-threatening illness on children. The psychological and behavioral adjustment of children with a parent receiving a bone marrow transplant (BMT) was compared to that of children in a matched community group. Forty child-parent dyads (20 BMT and 20 Community) completed three self-report measures at pre and post-BMT to assess children's behavior, …

Eliciting Information About Knowledge Structures In Persons With Mild Or Moderate Mental Retardation Through The Use Of Dynamic Assessment And Prototype Theory., Mary Ellen Zeppuhar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tests that are given to help determine the level of functioning of persons with mental retardation often rely on verbal report strategies. Because individuals with mental retardation have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, our knowledge of what they know is limited. In this study adults with mild and moderate mental retardation were administered the similarities section of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, a test of verbal responding, and then given the task of responding verbally or visually to stimulus categories, which were presented verbally or visually. All possible combinations of verbal and visual input and output were used in an assessment …
The Development Of A Coaching Education Curriculum Framework Outlining The Learning Outcomes Coaches Are To Be Taught To Pursue Through Interscholastic Athletics., A Keith Dils
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coaches and administrators involved in athletics in the educational milieu proclaim that sport is an integral part of the educational process. The National Federation of State High School Associations maintains that athletics is "educational" (Jable, 1986). However, positive outcomes are not inevitable and in fact negative outcomes often occur. Because the mandates for the "educational" use of athletics consist of general and undefined values (e.g., collapsing the concept of sportsmanship into one undefined value) they are not conducive to making values development through sport an attainable goal (Wandzilak & Potter, 1986). Also, these mandates for the "educational" use of sport …

The Construction And Validation Of A Scale To Measure A Spiritual Perspective., Nicholas Charles Neupauer
The Construction And Validation Of A Scale To Measure A Spiritual Perspective., Nicholas Charles Neupauer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The mental state, physical being and social/emotional portion of the learner has been part of the education process since 427 B.C. Although the spiritual dimension has not received much attention in the education literature, it seems as if more and more educators are becoming interested in the phenomenon as we head into the 21st century. Educators seemingly enjoy talking about the dimension and wish to include such a perspective in the curricula, but this researcher did not discovered a spirituality measurement in the field of education existing in the literature. Related scales that existed correlated spirituality with religiosity. The purpose …

Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By definition, the study of emergent literacy must address the literacy development of children from "birth" to "conventional literacy." In actuality, studies of the literacy development of children between the ages of 2 and 4 have become common, while studies regarding literacy development of 1-year-olds is extremely limited and studies beginning at birth even fewer. Through this study, data regarding the language, reading, and writing behaviors of children from birth to three years is identified, consolidated, and confirmed. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What are the emergent literacy behaviors of a child from birth to three years? (2) …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the determinants of the presidential use of military force. More specifically, this dissertation is an effort to determine how international and domestic political factors interact with presidential personality types when the use of military force is a foreign policy option. An attempt is made to bridge the gap between theories of international relations and foreign policy decision-making by using all three levels of analysis. Previous research has failed to take into account the effect of individual presidential characteristics on the decision to use force. Furthermore, the previous research involving the use of force has either examined the …

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield
Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Published during the years that mark the English working-class movement known as Chartism, Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution (1837), Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge (1841), and Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1848) all present a picture of social revolt. The scenes depicted in these narratives (all of which are based upon historical events--respectively, the French Revolution, the 1780 Gordon Riots in London, and the Chartist rebellion after the failure of the first petition in 1839) strongly suggest that the act of social revolt stems not so much from radical strategies of political action as from the proliferation of a set of dangerous "passions" …

Response Acquisition With Delayed Reinforcement In The Presence Of An Irrelevant Operandum., April Michele Williams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rats and pigeons responded under schedules of delayed reinforcement in three experiments. Two operanda were available but only one was correlated with reinforcement. In Experiment 1, either operandum could be correlated with reinforcement depending on which was pressed first. Due to this procedure the source of reinforcement varied irregularly between sessions. In Experiment 2, the operandum correlated with reinforcement was pre-determined and remained consistent within conditions. In Experiment 3, the source of reinforcement was pre-determined and varied semi-randomly. Responses were acquired without prior response shaping in the first two experiments and maintained in all three using unsignalled, resetting delays to …
Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K
Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the novels Lady Oracle, The Handmaid's Tale, and Cat's Eye, I locate and name the sites of memory to show how Atwood's protagonists appropriate them as their loci of resistance. The localized sites though marginalized are within the realm of representation; however, the "space-offs," a term I borrow from film theory, are beyond "the ideological." In these sites women create and/or validate counter-discourses that enable them to set up "politics of oppositionality" and provide them with a distance necessary to question the hegemonic. The localization of the sites eventually leads to the body as site. I acknowledge the changing …
