Chaotic Price Dynamics Of Agricultural Commodities, Jeff B. Cromwell
Chaotic Price Dynamics Of Agricultural Commodities, Jeff B. Cromwell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traditionally, commodity prices have been analyzed and modeled in the context of linear generating processes. The purpose of this dissertation is to address the adequacy of this work through examination of the critical assumption of independence in the residual process of linearly specified models. As an alternative, a test procedure is developed and utilized to demonstrate the appropriateness of applying generalized conditional heteroscedastic time series models (GARCH) to agricultural commodity prices. In addition, a distinction is made between testing for independence and testing for chaos in commodity prices. The price series of interest derive from the major international agricultural commodity …
Essays On The Economics Of Religion, Charitable Giving, And Youth Crime, Brian J. Osoba
Essays On The Economics Of Religion, Charitable Giving, And Youth Crime, Brian J. Osoba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation includes essays on the application of economics to areas previously thought to be the domain of sociology, psychology, and political science. Chapter 1 introduces the paths that economics has blazed into the areas of religion, charitable giving, crime, and government formation. The second chapter examines the functions that risk and time preference play in the strength of an individual's religious belief. The results illustrate that individuals treat religion like other goods exhibiting uncertainty and a delayed expected future payoff. Chapter 3 investigates the role of prestige and warm glow in the market for charitable giving. The results indicate …
Three Essays On Trade And *Development, Abhra Roy
Three Essays On Trade And *Development, Abhra Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the first essay of this dissertation, we analyze the role of education subsidies on child labor in a situation where parents choose the quantity of children to have as well as their educational attainment. We find that lump sum education subsidies may increase (decrease) the equilibrium level of education and child labor depending on whether parents attach more weight on education (quality) or on school enrollment. Marginal education subsidies, in general, have the exact opposite effect. Some authors have found that a rise in the cost of schooling decreases child labor in some countries while increasing it in others. …

To predict the instantaneous levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used. Axle speed, torque, their rates of change over different time periods and two other variables as …
Information Fusion Schemes For Real Time Risk Assessment In Adaptive Control Systems, Martin Mladenovski
Information Fusion Schemes For Real Time Risk Assessment In Adaptive Control Systems, Martin Mladenovski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Intelligent Flight Control System (IFCS) deploys a neural network for in-flight aircraft failure accommodation. Verification and validation (V&V) of adaptive systems is a challenging research problem. Our approach to V&V relies on real-time monitoring of neural network learning. Monitors detect learning anomalies and react to different failure conditions. We investigated data fusion techniques suitable for the analysis of neural network monitors. Monitor outputs are fused into a measure of confidence, indicating the belief in the correctness of failure accommodation mechanism provided by the neural network. We investigated two data fusion techniques, one based on Dempster-Shafer theory and the other based …

No significant relationships were found between perceived interparental conflict and adolescents' tendencies to approach arguments, adolescents' tendencies to avoid arguments, and adolescents' verbal aggressiveness. When controlling for tolerance …
Psychophysical Studies Of Binocular And Spatial Vision In Humans With Anisometropic And Strabismic Amblyopia, Ritwick Agrawal
Psychophysical Studies Of Binocular And Spatial Vision In Humans With Anisometropic And Strabismic Amblyopia, Ritwick Agrawal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Amblyopia is a common developmental visual disorder. Previous studies of amblyopia have delineated spatial and binocular deficits. However debate exists about how the strabismic and anisometropic subtypes may differ. The central hypothesis is that the two subtypes differ with regard to binocular integration functions. Strabismic subjects may show severe impairments of binocular integration due to a history inter-ocular suppression, which predicts the pattern of monocular deficits. Seven anisometropic, six strabismic and seven control subjects were tested psychophysically with four monocular tests and three binocular tests. Results indicated that the degree of loss of Vernier acuity was larger than that predicted …

For data analysis and interpretation, an inductive emergent design …
Evaluation Of The Treatment Utility Of The Analog Functional Analysis And The Structured Descriptive Assessment, Carie L. English
Evaluation Of The Treatment Utility Of The Analog Functional Analysis And The Structured Descriptive Assessment, Carie L. English
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The analog functional analysis exerts a great deal of control over environmental variables due to the systematic manipulation of specific antecedent and consequent events. Previous research suggests that the treatment utility of the analog might be enhanced by including environmental variables specific to the participant (e.g., caregivers). An alternative to this is to conduct the functional assessment in the natural environment. The structured descriptive assessment (SDA) involves systematic manipulation of antecedent events but is conducted by caregivers in individuals' natural environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the treatment utility of the analog functional analysis and the SDA …
Origins And The Twentieth-Century Long Poem, Joe W. Moffett
Origins And The Twentieth-Century Long Poem, Joe W. Moffett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The long poem is often seen by critics as beginning in the nineteenth-century with the publication of Walt Whitman's Song of Myself. It is generally agreed, however, that the form did not come of age until the following century when it became a premier poetic endeavor. Although the long poem has been used to various ends, one theme identifiable among a variety of twentieth-century texts is a concern with origins. In this dissertation poets are seen as seeking to evaluate the societies in which they live by looking into the past to find originary cultures from which their own descend. …
Use Of A Token Economy To Increase Exercise In Children With Cystic Fibrosis, Rebecca S. Bernard
Use Of A Token Economy To Increase Exercise In Children With Cystic Fibrosis, Rebecca S. Bernard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cystic fibrosis is a chronic illness that affects several major organ systems, primarily the respiratory system and the exocrine glands of the pancreatic system. The treatment regimen is extensive (e.g., medications, vitamins, high fat diet, airway clearance sessions). Although adherence to medications is high, adherence to the airway clearance techniques (chest physiotherapy and exercise) is less consistent. Increasing exercise adherence is of utmost importance because pulmonary difficulties are associated with the highest mortality rate and exercise is more beneficial than other airway clearance methods. Despite this, very little research has focused on increasing exercise adherence in this population. The purpose …

Limitations of the study …
Establishing Control Of Stereotypy By An Antecedent Stimulus Using Punishment, Shannon S. Haag
Establishing Control Of Stereotypy By An Antecedent Stimulus Using Punishment, Shannon S. Haag
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Few studies have demonstrated conclusively that the use of punishment in the presence of an antecedent stimulus can bring responding under control of that stimulus. The purpose of this study was to determine stereotypy could be controlled by antecedent stimuli due to a differential history of punishment, and, if so, whether participants would then request the stimulus correlated with nonpunishment. Three adults with mental retardation participated. In Experiment 1, analog functional analyses were conducted to develop hypotheses about the effects of environmental variables on participants' repetitive behaviors. Results of Experiment 1 suggested that the responding of all participants likely was …
Effects Of Schedule Segmentation On Pausing And Escape In The Transitions Between Favorable And Unfavorable Schedules Of Reinforcement, Tammy R. Wade
Effects Of Schedule Segmentation On Pausing And Escape In The Transitions Between Favorable And Unfavorable Schedules Of Reinforcement, Tammy R. Wade
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Simple schedules of reinforcement typically are preferred to chained schedules of equal duration. In the current study, pigeons served in six experiments designed to test whether the juxtaposition of simple and chained schedules would engender the disruption in behavior typically observed in the transition from favorable to unfavorable conditions of reinforcement. In one set of experiments, a multiple schedule was employed in which a simple schedule alternated irregularly with a chained schedule. Whether fixed-ratio or fixed-interval schedules were employed, only half the subjects paused for an extended duration in the simple-to-chain transition, and this occurred only when the first segment …

Correlates Of 9-Month-Old Infants' Night Awakening, Cheryl Wiedman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There are individual differences in 9-month-old infants' night awakening behavior. Some infants are able to soothe themselves back to sleep however; others are unable to fall back asleep without parental intervention. Attending to a waking infant frequently during the night may cause problems for parents due to the effects of sleep deprivation. In particular, mothers of infants who are sleep deprived as a result of their infants' frequent night awakenings have been found to experience deficits in mood and perceptions of their infants. Given that there are individual differences in night awakening behavior the present study sought to determine: (1) …

Media Concentration Of Ownership And Its Effects On Editorial Page Vigor Of West Virginia Daily Newspapers, Rita F. Counts Colistra
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the effects of media concentration of ownership on editorial page vigor of West Virginia daily newspapers that changed from independent to non-independent ownership from 1965 to present. A content analysis over two-time periods, a one-week constructed sample while under independent ownership and a one-week constructed sample after the newspaper changed to non-independent ownership, suggests that overall editorial page vigor does not change. However, data concerning editorial geographic focus and number of letters to the editor suggest an increase in vigor after moving to non-independent ownership. That is, the newspapers published more locally focused editorials and more letters …
Breaking Boundaries, Juan Giraldo
Breaking Boundaries, Juan Giraldo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Graphic design communication is in constant change. Everyday new technologies emerge and evolve, affecting the way we communicate and deliver messages. For this reason, graphic designers should be able to understand the basic principles of design and effectively apply them to any media. It is my intention with this thesis to analyze the way I work in the design process, my influences, and also, why I make specific decisions based on different media. To illustrate these concepts I will discuss the body of work presented in my thesis exhibition: Breaking Boundaries.
