The Effectiveness Of Four Translation Strategies On Nurses' Adoption Of An Evidence -Based Bladder Protocol, Jamey S. Frasure

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. Mixed evidence exists regarding the effective use of the use of the four translation strategies of educational materials, educational meetings, reminders, and audit and feedback on the adoption and implementation of interventions by nurses. Many clinical practice guidelines for the care of the stroke patient advocate for bladder training, but evidence-based bladder protocols for the stroke patient are not available. The best available bladder protocol identified was a prompted voiding algorithm from the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario. Review of the literature reported 32--79% of hospitalized stroke patients suffer from urinary incontinence. Strong support for prompted voiding demonstrated the …

Urban Planning, Transportation, And Land -Use Planning: The Effects On Attitudes And Political Behaviors, Abraham Goldberg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Public policy decisions made across levels of government have an effect on the way in which cities and city neighborhoods are built and maintained. Places vary in several ways including by the level of diversity or uniformity of the types of available amenities, transportation options, cleanliness, safety, affordability, and the availability of basic services. A growing body of literature, through empirical research, demonstrates that these variations affect several domains of people's lives. Personal health, the natural environment, and social capital have all been linked to characteristics of the built environment and attributes of the public realm. In line with this …

Age Differences In Younger And Older Adults' Experience Of Interpersonal Problems, Leo Schlosnagle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Differences between younger (N=78) and older (N=78) adults' frequency of experience of interpersonal problems were examined. Previous research has shown age-related declines in contact frequency and negative interactions (Akiyama, et al., 2003; Carstensen, 1992). Aging has also been associated with concurrent increases in emotional closeness and relationship satisfaction with social partners (Birditt, et al., 2005; Lang & Carstensen, 2002), and social self-efficacy and problem-solving effectiveness (Artistico, Cervone, and Pezzuti, 2003; Blanchard-Fields, Mienaltowski, & Seay, 2007; Lachman, 1986). In the current study, older adults reported experiencing interpersonal problems significantly less often than younger adults. Older adults also reported less contact frequency …

An Individualized Multimodal Mental Skills Intervention For College Athletes Undergoing Injury Rehabilitation, Jamie L. Shapiro Jan 2009

An Individualized Multimodal Mental Skills Intervention For College Athletes Undergoing Injury Rehabilitation, Jamie L. Shapiro

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the response to injury is both physical and psychological (e.g., Brewer & Cornelius, 2003; Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer, & Morrey, 1998), numerous researchers have advocated using psychological interventions in conjunction with physical therapy to optimize an athlete's recovery from injury. No empirical study has examined how to craft a mental skills intervention for injured athletes from initial post-injury assessment. The purpose of the present study was to explore injured athletes' experiences with a multimodal mental skills intervention to gain insight into how to create a mental skills plan for rehabilitation from initial post-injury assessment. Single subject and qualitative methodology were …

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer occurring in males between the ages of 15 & 35. Although testicular cancer holds a survival rate of 99% when detected and treated early, prior research shows most males do not perform regular testicular self-examinations. This research examined the role of fear appeals in the revised protection motivation theory (PMT) model to predict the performance of testicular self-examination behaviors in college males. An experiment was conducted among a convenience sample of 156 (N = 156) males enrolled in a state university. All males answered a set of questions measuring their threat appraisal concerning …

The Effect Of Attentional Bias On Suggestibility, Elizabeth E. Stacom Jan 2009

The Effect Of Attentional Bias On Suggestibility, Elizabeth E. Stacom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research implies that individuals with high anxiety levels may be more accurate in response to misleading questions when compared to individuals with low anxiety levels (Ridley & Clifford, 2004; Ridley, Clifford, & Keogh, 2002). This effect may be because individuals with high anxiety levels demonstrate an attentional memory bias toward threatening stimuli. The present study investigated whether a high versus low attentional bias affects suggestibility. Seventy participants completed a visual probe task to measure attentional bias. Next, participants were presented with 11 threatening pictures. Each picture was followed by a distractor task. Participants were then asked two misleading and two …

In terms of the formation of Taiwan's national identity, this dissertation broadens the traditional way of measuring national identity in Taiwan. Not only are self-identity and attitudes toward China incorporated, but also party identification, ethnicity, and language are …

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy: The Effects Of Parental Attention Components On Children's Verbalizations And Attending-To-Task Behaviors., Ashley B. Tempel Jan 2009

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy: The Effects Of Parental Attention Components On Children's Verbalizations And Attending-To-Task Behaviors., Ashley B. Tempel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Various evidence-based behavioral parent training programs are theoretically designed to target parenting skills that enhance parent-child interactions. Many similarities exist across the empirically-supported interventions, however programs also include unique components (e.g., use of reflections in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy). Empirical examination of individual components is necessary to inform components that promote or deter intervention effectiveness and efficiency. An empirically established association among language delays, behavior difficulties, and poor longitudinal outcomes further supports a need for identification of facilitative components. Currently, examinations of individual components have largely targeted the effects of praise and time-out. Despite clinical assertions that additional components serve important …

End -Of -Life Care Training In Medical School: An Examination Of Medical Students' Knowledge, Attitudes, Preparedness To Provide Care, And The Hidden Curriculum., Emily H. Bower

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

End-of-life (EOL) care discussions between physicians and patients promote positive patient health outcomes (Stewart, 1995). However, medical students receive limited training in EOL care (Sullivan, Lakoma, & Block, 2003). To be able to improve curricula, it is important to understand the current training experience and its effects on student attitudes and behavior. The purpose of the current study was twofold: (1) to examine predictors of self-rated preparation to provide EOL care, and (2) to examine predictors of attitudes about EOL care in a medical student population. Additionally, the moderating effect of “hidden” or informal curriculum on the relation between learning …

Among these latter approaches is the increased importance of entrepreneurship for creating economic growth through establishment of new firms or growth from established firms. Exploring the characteristics of entrepreneurship and its contributions to the local economy can help develop a map for designing specific development policies for Appalachia.;The main objective of the study is to determine the relationship between regional …

Life Stories Of Selected Adults With Learning Disabilities: How They Come To Understand And Choose To Reveal Their Disabilities, Christine M. Sampson Jan 2009

Life Stories Of Selected Adults With Learning Disabilities: How They Come To Understand And Choose To Reveal Their Disabilities, Christine M. Sampson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adults with learning disabilities continue to be impacted by their disabilities throughout their lives. Once they exit formal education, the disclosure of the disability becomes a personal choice. Previous research proposes that although the effects of disabilities are present in the workplace, individuals with learning disabilities are hesitant to disclose their disabilities or request accommodations. Ten adults with learning disabilities were interviewed for this qualitative study to determine how individuals with learning disabilities come to understand and disclose their disabilities. The results suggest that the understanding of what a learning disability means is based upon several factors including the words …

Health Promotion During Midlife: The Influence Of Internal Health Locus Of Control And Future Time Perspective, Sarah T. Stahl Jan 2009

Health Promotion During Midlife: The Influence Of Internal Health Locus Of Control And Future Time Perspective, Sarah T. Stahl

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Health promoting behaviors are typically categorized as behaviors that move individuals towards optimal health while concurrently decreasing one's susceptibility to disease and illness (Becker & Arnold, 2004; Breslow, 1999). When compared to other developmental age periods, less is known about health promotion in midlife (Merrill & Verbrugge, 1999). Thus, the present study examined the relations among demographic variables, future time perspective, internal health locus of control, and middle-aged adults' engagement in health promotion. Data from 109 middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 and 66 were collected via an online survey. Results indicated that the data fit the model poorly …

Methods For Iris Classification And Macro Feature Detection, Manisha Sam Sunder Jan 2009

Methods For Iris Classification And Macro Feature Detection, Manisha Sam Sunder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work deals with two distinct aspects of iris-based biometric systems: iris classification and macro-feature detection. Iris classification will benefit identification systems where the query image has to be compared against all identities in the database. By preclassifying the query image based on its texture, this comparison is executed only against those irises that are from the same class as the query image. In the proposed classification method, the normalized iris is tessellated into overlapping rectangular blocks and textural features are extracted from each block. A clustering scheme is used to generate multiple classes of irises based on the extracted …

Consolidation Of Parental Monitoring Variables And Scales: Preliminary Evidence For Construct Validity, Ryan J. Anderson Jan 2009

Consolidation Of Parental Monitoring Variables And Scales: Preliminary Evidence For Construct Validity, Ryan J. Anderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The aim of the present study was to improve definitions of parental monitoring constructs by reducing the domain of content from which researchers have sampled in previous investigations. For example, between the years of 1991 and 2007 researchers developed at least 49 different parental monitoring scales comprised of a total of 310 questions or items. Visual inspection of these scales as well as thorough review of the parental monitoring literature suggested that researchers primarily were interested in assessing five domains of content (the sum of which is described as parental monitoring). These five domains of content are (1) adolescent perceptions …

Male Sexual Violence Victimization: Definitions, Epidemiological Profile, And Psychological Impact, Ekta Choudhary Jan 2009

Male Sexual Violence Victimization: Definitions, Epidemiological Profile, And Psychological Impact, Ekta Choudhary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sexual violence or sexual assault refers to any forcible or non-forcible sexual activity where consent is not obtained or freely given. In comparison to female victims, there is a relative paucity of literature examining the characteristics and adverse health outcomes associated with male sexual assault as well as long-term consequences. Past studies have relied primarily on population-based survey data to estimate the prevalence of sexual assault and associated health outcomes. The main objective of this study was to enhance our understanding of male sexual assault through results obtained from three related projects. In the first study, data from the 2001-2005 …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pigeons were trained on a two-component multiple schedule with a chain schedule in each component. According to a variable-interval schedule in the initial link, pecks on a center key produced a terminal link with a delayed matching-to-sample trial. A trial began with the onset of a red or green (Experiment 1) or green or blue (Experiment 2) light as a sample stimulus on the center key. The sample stimulus was followed by a retention interval during which all keys were dark, and then by comparison stimuli on the side keys. A response to the comparison stimulus that matched the sample …
