I Know, Right?, Morgan Gesell Milders
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My MFA thesis and supporting exhibition will highlight sculptural work that deals directly or indirectly with shared cultural experiences. A narrative explains my interests in meticulous craft and recycling cultural objects and the origins of the popular culture imagery used in the exhibition. I will explain how with parody and satire I am able to leave the viewer feeling at once judged and judgmental.
The Explosion Of Ethnic Retributive Violence In Czechoslovakia At The End Of The Second World War, Bryson David Taylor
The Explosion Of Ethnic Retributive Violence In Czechoslovakia At The End Of The Second World War, Bryson David Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The end of the Second World War was not the end of the explosion of human rights abuses from the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe. In Czechoslovakia as well as Poland, there were outbreaks of retributive violence driven toward the German ethnic minorities present within their liberated boundaries. In both cases, the governments of Poland and Czechoslovakia began a state sponsored, and Potsdam Conference approved program, of "orderly and humane" expulsions. While most twentieth and twenty first century historians have attributed these actions in Czechoslovakia as a continuation of the historical relationship between the Czechs and Germans of Bohemia and …
Margaret Ruthven Lang: Her Life And Piano Works, Juliana Yap
Margaret Ruthven Lang: Her Life And Piano Works, Juliana Yap
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
American composer Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972) is perhaps best known today for her songs and choral pieces and as the first woman composer to have a work performed by a major American orchestra. Though her chamber and orchestral works have not survived, her piano pieces provide an important look at this neglected composer's art. This research paper presents an overview of Lang's complete published piano works, eleven works in total ranging from elementary to advanced levels and dating from 1894 to 1919. It is designed as a reference for piano teachers, students and performers and provides pedagogical information, musical examples …
The Role Of Geography, Demographics, Bandwidth Speed And Internet Availability In Rural West Virginia Communities: A Multiple Case Study Of The 2012 Cards Of Hope Fundraiser, Rebecca Diehm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Today, social media has become a popular public relations tool in the promotion of campaigns and fundraisers. While this new addition may be a key tool in the promotion of certain fundraisers and campaigns, this study was designed to focus on what public relations methods successfully promote events, campaigns and fundraisers in rural areas, such as those in West Virginia. The objective of this master's thesis is to support the notion that press releases are still the foundation of public relations methods not only in West Virginia, but in rural communities throughout the United States. In order to support this …

The Effectiveness Of A Structured Telephone Support Program For Rural Patients With Heart Failure, Debra J. Ansinelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The health of a population is influenced by the physical, social, cultural, and economic environment. Limited access to care has been cited as a reason why the Appalachian region of Kentucky has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the developed world. Kentucky ranked seventh in the nation for heart failure (HF) death rates 2007-2009. The objectives of this project were to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured telephone support program for HF management to improve self-care behaviors and quality of life and to reduce anxiety, 30 day readmission rates, and mortality rates in rural patients with heart …
The Effects Of An Educational Program On Recognition Of Atypical Signs And Symptoms Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Women In The Emergency Room, Robert E. Wynn Jr.
The Effects Of An Educational Program On Recognition Of Atypical Signs And Symptoms Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Women In The Emergency Room, Robert E. Wynn Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the American Heart Association (2010), in the United States every 36 seconds someone dies from heart and blood vessel disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2007) estimate that one in six deaths in the US is related to coronary artery disease. When diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome, which is an acute event, resulting from CAD, appropriate treatment greatly reduces the risk of refractory ischemia, need for urgent revascularization, and death. Women are less likely to be urgently diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome, receive thrombolytic therapy, or undergo percutaneous coronary intervention than men, thereby increasing their mortality …

Parent Civic Behavior And Observed Civic Messages: Associations With Adolescent Civic Behavior And Prioritization, Benjamin J. Oosterhoff
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study employed observational and multi-informant survey methodology to explore associations among parents' civic behaviors, observed parent and adolescent messages about civic obligation, and adolescents' civic behavior and prioritization (should) judgments. A sample of 160 adolescents (Mage = 14.42, range = 12-18) and their parents (144 mothers and 52 fathers), participated in video-recorded, structured, dyadic interaction tasks in which they discussed citizenship and civic duty. Parents and adolescents also completed questionnaires assessing civic behavior and civic prioritization judgments. Within distinct civic activities, parents' report of civic behavior was positively associated with adolescents' report of civic behavior and prioritization judgments. …
A Multidimensional Investigation Of Sexuality In Older Adults Within A Successful Aging Model, Allyson S. Graf
A Multidimensional Investigation Of Sexuality In Older Adults Within A Successful Aging Model, Allyson S. Graf
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sexual well-being in later life has traditionally been evaluated in relation to age-related physical limitations and sexual dysfunction. This study developed a multidimensional model of sexual well-being by investigating sexual interest, sexual attitudes (general and age-specific), and age-specific sexual knowledge in relation to more commonly-used indicators of sexual well-being (e.g., frequency and sexual satisfaction). Using a racially-diverse, U.S. sample of adults (N = 367, Mage = 54.40), structural equation modeling was used to test these associations (AGFI = .967; TLI = .994; and RMSEA = .031). Sexual interest (beta = .53), attitudes (beta = -.11 and .17), and knowledge (beta …

Predictors Of Distress During The Breast Diagnostic Period, Mariann M. Harding
Predictors Of Distress During The Breast Diagnostic Period, Mariann M. Harding
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women and the leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide (Warner, 2011). Mortality from breast cancer in the United States has been decreasing in part due to advances in therapy and the detection of the disease at earlier stages. As a result, more than 1.6 million U.S. women will undergo a breast biopsy in 2013 with approximately 232,340 of these being diagnosed with cancer. Although distress in women undergoing a breast diagnostic evaluation has been recognized as having the potential to alter treatment outcomes in those diagnosed with cancer, few …

The Effects Of Currency And Imports Restrictions On Luxury Advertising In Argentina: Content Analysis Of Ads In Argentine Fashion Magazines, Juan F. Mundel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While many scholars have examined the relationships between public policies and advertising, few have studied such relationships in Latin America. This study explores how the limitations on foreign exchange transactions in Argentina affect the advertising strategies implemented by luxury brand advertising. A content analysis of 398 luxury brand ads placed in fashion magazines in Argentina was conducted to investigate changes in the luxury ads in the wake of the currency and import restrictions in Argentina. The analysis indicates that, during the restrictions, ads were less likely to convey strong emotional messages than before. Also, the result suggests that the creative …
Appalachian Alter-Natives: The Back-To-The-Land Migration And Community Change In Appalachia, 1970--2000, Jinny A. Turman
Appalachian Alter-Natives: The Back-To-The-Land Migration And Community Change In Appalachia, 1970--2000, Jinny A. Turman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Beginning in the late 1960s and continuing through the 1970s, thousands of people migrated from America's cities to the countryside to establish communes and independent homesteads on small plots of land. By working the land they hoped to achieve autonomy, self-sufficiency, and closeness with nature. Cheap land, mild climate, beautiful scenery, and folk culture drew many of these predominately young, white, well educated, and affluent migrants to Appalachia. During the earliest years of the back-to-the-land migration suspicion and occasionally conflict surfaced as natives and newcomers navigated different lifestyle preferences and worldviews, for many of the back-to-the-landers, or "alter-natives," had identified …
How Do They Think Differently?: A Social Media Advertising Attitude Survey On Chinese Students In China And Chinese Students In America, Anan Wan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explored whether Chinese students in both China and in America had different attitudes toward social media advertising, and how their attitudes are different, through a survey of Chinese students in these two countries. The survey determined how they used social media, whether the different social media networks in the two countries affected their social media use, and what their attitudes are about social media advertising in terms of sources, content, and level of trustworthiness. It also tested the relationship between the students' the social media diet (amount, frequency, and duration) and attitude toward social media advertising.
Do Forensic Interviewing Methods Or The Presentation Of Research Findings Effect Juror's Perceptions Of Child Witnesses?, Pamela Tessier
Do Forensic Interviewing Methods Or The Presentation Of Research Findings Effect Juror's Perceptions Of Child Witnesses?, Pamela Tessier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is not uncommon for children to be called to testify as eyewitnesses in court cases. In cases of child sexual abuse, children are often the only witness to the crime and are thus relied upon for truthful testimony in the case. Given a number of different forensic interviewing techniques, jurors may find themselves looking at some interview techniques as more credible and truth-inducing than others. This study aimed to find how much, if any, influence the type of interview used with the child has on the individual juror. It also aimed to assess the effect that presenting research findings …
Brief Assessment Of Distress And Pain, Laura L. Quentin
Brief Assessment Of Distress And Pain, Laura L. Quentin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pain has been conceptualized as a mixture of physical and psychological factors that are indicative of actual or potential damage to one's physical being. The experience of pain is a complex interaction of somatic, behavioral, affective, and cognitive components. Of particular interest is the growing body of literature regarding the roles that negative psychological states such as anxiety, fear, and depression have in the contribution of poorer outcomes for individuals suffering from painful conditions. Specifically, these psychological concerns can exacerbate the overall experience of pain and lead to higher rates of dysfunction and disability. Given the importance of these variables, …
West Virginia Physical Education Teacher Perceptions Of State Mandated Fitnessgram® Testing And Application Of Results, William M. Miller
West Virginia Physical Education Teacher Perceptions Of State Mandated Fitnessgram® Testing And Application Of Results, William M. Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background/Purpose: In response to concerns with increasing rates of childhood obesity, many states have enacted policies that affect physical education. A commonly used approach is state mandated fitness test administration in school-based settings. While this approach is widely debated throughout the literature, one area that lacks research is teachers attitudes toward this fitness testing and the application of results in their professional practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of West Virginia physical education teachers toward the mandated use of the FITNESSGRAM® and to gain a better understanding of how the resultant data are employed to …
Efficacy Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With Parents With Intellectual Disability., Karishma Chengappa
Efficacy Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy With Parents With Intellectual Disability., Karishma Chengappa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Parents with intellectual disability are faced with the challenges of parenting as well as with having to deal with cognitive difficulties and limited financial and social supports. Deficits in parenting ability often are associated with poor child outcomes such as developmental delays, mental health concerns, neglect, and disruptive behavior disorders. Parents with intellectual disabilities frequently come under the scrutiny of child protective services for neglect and inadequate parenting and are often overrepresented in child maltreatment proceedings. When given systematic skills training using applied behavior analysis, these parents have been shown to improve a narrow range of basic child care skills. …

This study utilized a consumer marketing approach to investigate the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) market for sport psychology positions. Athletic administrators’ preferences for sport psychology positions were compared based on time commitment, affiliation, payment, services, and clients. Results indicated that services and affiliation were the most important characteristics. Specifically, athletic administrators found positions that were designed for part-time athletic department employees, providing both mental health and performance focused services, paid via annual salary, and working with athletes, teams, and athletics staff members as the most attractive positions; a market simulation suggested over twothirds of the sample would interested in …
The Effects Of Student Behavior Alteration Techniques On Student Motives To Communicate, Student Talk, And Student Learning, Christopher J. Claus
The Effects Of Student Behavior Alteration Techniques On Student Motives To Communicate, Student Talk, And Student Learning, Christopher J. Claus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation addressed the effects of students' perceived effectiveness of and likelihood to use student behavior alteration techniques (BATs) on students' motives to communicate with their instructors, student talk (i.e., willingness to talk, out-of-class communication), and student learning (i.e., cognitive learning, affective learning, state motivation, and student communication satisfaction). Results revealed that student perceived effectiveness of, and likelihood to use, student BATs did not influence, student talk or student learning, but indicated some significant relationships with the students' motives to communicate with their instructors. Specifically, the relational, functional, participatory, and sycophancy motives were generally related to the perceived likelihood to …
Selling 'Fracking': Legitimation Of High Speed Oil And Gas Extraction In The Marcellus Shale Region, Jacob R. Matz
Selling 'Fracking': Legitimation Of High Speed Oil And Gas Extraction In The Marcellus Shale Region, Jacob R. Matz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The advent of horizontal hydraulic fracture drilling, or 'fracking,' a technology used to access oil and natural gas deposits, has allowed for the extraction of deep, unconventional shale gas and oil deposits in various shale seams throughout the United States and world. One such shale seam, the Marcellus shale, extends from New York State, across Pennsylvania, and throughout West Virginia, where shale gas development has significantly increased within the last decade. This boom has created a massive amount of economic activity surrounding the energy industry, creating jobs for workers, income from leases and royalties for landowners, and profits for energy …
Predicting Deer Hunting Participation Using Theory Of Planned Behavior And Constraint Integrated Theory Of Planned Behavior Models: A Study Of Oregon Big Game Hunters, Suresh Kumar Shrestha
Predicting Deer Hunting Participation Using Theory Of Planned Behavior And Constraint Integrated Theory Of Planned Behavior Models: A Study Of Oregon Big Game Hunters, Suresh Kumar Shrestha
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studies have established that the theory of planned behavior (TPB) is a simple but effective model for providing theoretical explanation as to why people participate in a given recreation activity, including general hunting activity. Understanding leisure constraints is another popular approach in leisure research, which is considered more useful from the practitioners' point of view. Literature suggested that significant relationships exist between constraint dimensions and constructs of theory of planned behavior. It was assumed that integrating constraints to TPB might not only enhance the predicting power of the TPB but might also provide a practical dimension to it. The aims …
Emotion Regulation And Threat Estimation As Mediators Of The Relation Between Cognitive Functioning And Anxiety In Late Life, Caroline M. Ciliberti
Emotion Regulation And Threat Estimation As Mediators Of The Relation Between Cognitive Functioning And Anxiety In Late Life, Caroline M. Ciliberti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Rates of anxiety are generally thought to decline in typically aging older adults. Some theorize that this decline is a result of age-related improvements in emotion regulation. Emotion regulation may require the use of complex cognitive processes, however, which can be impacted by cognitive decline. Indeed, the prevalence of anxiety is high among older adults with cognitive impairment. The current study examined emotion regulation and threat perception as possible mediators in the relation between cognitive functioning and anxiety.;Methods: One hundred adults, aged 60 and older, were recruited from nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and the community. All were asked …
Effectiveness Of A Theory Based Comprehensive Sexual Education Program At A Baltimore City High School, Darlene Hinds
Effectiveness Of A Theory Based Comprehensive Sexual Education Program At A Baltimore City High School, Darlene Hinds
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background Sexual activity among adolescents can have lifelong consequences including teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS), reported 13.8% of high school students grades 9-12 admitted to having intercourse with four or more people and 34.2% report being sexually active (CDC, 2010b). Baltimore City has disproportionately high rates related to teen pregnancy, chlamydia and gonorrhea when compared to national statistics. In 2006, the rate of teen births among girls ages 15-19 in Baltimore City was 66.4 per 1,000, compared to Maryland's teen birth rate of 34.4 per 1,000 (Maryland Department of Health and Mental …
A Comparison Of Responses And Exteroceptive Stimuli As Time Markers, Adam E. Fox
A Comparison Of Responses And Exteroceptive Stimuli As Time Markers, Adam E. Fox
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Time markers are events that are predictive of when future events will occur. Different events can serve as time markers that initiate intervals in schedules of reinforcement. Pigeons were exposed to fixed-interval (FI) schedules in which the onset of the interval was signaled by the illumination of a key light, initiated by a peck to a lighted key, or a combination of both events. In these variations of fixed-interval schedules, food was delivered contingent on the first response after the interval elapsed. In Experiment 1, three pigeons were exposed to a multiple schedule. One component was a standard FI schedule; …

The West Virginia University Guide to the Preparation of Masters Theses Abdulraouf Y. Lamoshi Thrombelastography Parameters versus Classical Coagulation Profile in Trauma Patients: a Retrospective Study Background: Thrombelastography (TEGTM, Hemoscope, Niles, IL) is increasingly utilized. As TEG depicts overall coagulation it may be more comprehensive and capable to detect any coagulation abnormalities in comparison to classical coagulation tests (CCT: PT, PTT, INR, platelets). Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is thought to contribute to coagulopathy. The primary aim was to compare TEG parameters of TBI vs. Non-TBI patients. The secondary aim was to identify TEG vs. CCT parameters associated with outcome (mortality, …
Characterization Of Late Postpartum Sleep Disturbance, Caffeine-Related Performance, And Daily Functioning, Kelsey K. Meekins
Characterization Of Late Postpartum Sleep Disturbance, Caffeine-Related Performance, And Daily Functioning, Kelsey K. Meekins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The early postpartum period is marked by maternal sleep fragmentation and performance deficits. Although sleep gradually improves in postpartum women, reaction times gradually worsen. This performance deficit is seen beyond 6 weeks postpartum, when many women are expected to return to work, and it is unknown when (or if) new mothers' performance deficits fully recover. The current study used existing data to characterize the late postpartum period (6 months-3 years after the child was born) in terms of recovery from sleep disturbance by monitoring the behavior of mothers on both objective and subjective measures. The current study aimed to describe …

The goal of this research was to promote the use of evidence-based TCC guidelines in physical therapist practice and education by applying principles of knowledge translation as defined by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). According to the NIDDR, research should be framed so that knowledge gained is ultimately applied in a manner geared towards improving the lives of people with disabilities.;Study 1 resulted in a perspectives paper which established a sound clinical rationale for the inclusion of TCC as a component of physical therapist practice. This rationale is based on the pathophysiologic effects of smoking on …
The Influence Of Memory Enhancement Techniques On Source Monitoring, Ria M. Travers
The Influence Of Memory Enhancement Techniques On Source Monitoring, Ria M. Travers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An important aspect of accurate eyewitness testimony is not only being able to recall the details of an event, but being able to trace that memory back to its source or origin (Johnson, Hashtroudi, & Lindsay, 1993). The current study examined the use of two memory enhancement interventions to improve the accuracy of source memory, or the correct attribution of a memory to its origin, and free recall. The first intervention, motivational instructions, informed participants that they are capable of recalling an event if they try their best. The second intervention, focused meditation, used a breathing exercise to focus individuals' …
Investigating The Effect Of Humor Communication Skills Training On Pro-Social And Anti-Social Humor Styles, Cognitive Learning, Self-Efficacy, Motivation, And Humor Use, Lori E. Vela
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Humor is an important aspect of interpersonal interactions as it is linked to the development and maintenance of relationships (Merolla, 2006). The purpose of this dissertation was to test the effect of a humor communication skills training program on the ability to minimize anti-social humor (i.e., aggressive, self-defeating) and enhance pro-social humor (i.e., affiliative, self-enhancing) in interpersonal interactions. Working from the framework of Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986, 2001), the effect of the humor skills training on self-efficacy, motivation, positive and negative humor use, and cognitive learning were also examined. Data were collected at baseline, post-training, and at a two …
