The Relation Of Stress And Coping To Psychosocial Outcomes In Pediatric Burn Survivors, Paul T. Enlow
The Relation Of Stress And Coping To Psychosocial Outcomes In Pediatric Burn Survivors, Paul T. Enlow
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stress and coping are important predictor of psychosocial functioning in both healthy and chronically ill populations. However, no studies have investigated the relation of stressors and coping to psychosocial functioning in pediatric burn survivors. Stress consists of major life events (e.g. death of a family member) and daily hassles (e.g. receiving a speeding ticket). Results from previous studies found that stress was related to positive and negative psychosocial functioning. Coping, on the other hand, is a response that aims to combat the stressor and promote positive adjustment. Past studies have shown that the impact of stress may be moderated by …
Division I College Student-Athlete Career Situation And Attitudes Toward Career Counseling, Adrian J. Ferrera
Division I College Student-Athlete Career Situation And Attitudes Toward Career Counseling, Adrian J. Ferrera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Few student-athletes advance to the professional level following their collegiate athletic career, leaving many to pursue alternative career paths. Although much attention has been dedicated to student-athlete academic progress and graduation rates, little attention has been given to student-athlete career development and their attitudes toward career counseling. Since the career development of student-athletes is complex and is affected by several variables, the purposes of the present study were threefold: 1) determine the career situation of male and female student-athletes attending an NCAA Division I university, 2) determine if differences existed between student-athletes and non-athlete students in their attitudes toward career …
Pausing Of Children During Signaled And Unsignaled Transitions, Apral P. Foreman
Pausing Of Children During Signaled And Unsignaled Transitions, Apral P. Foreman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We evaluated effects of signaled and unsignaled transitions between reinforcement schedules on pausing and run rates of academic responding and rate and duration of problem behavior for four children who engaged in chronic and severe problem behavior. Children completed an academic task on a computer program to earn access to brief video clips. Lean (more responses and short videos) and rich (few responses and long videos) reinforcement schedules were alternated within each session, creating four transition types: lean-to-lean, lean-to-rich, rich-to-rich, and rich-to-lean. Pausing was measured as the latency to initiate the first response of a reinforcement schedule. Run rates were …
Relation Of Interpersonal Conflict Behaviors To Emotion Dysregulation And Ptsd In Adolescents With A History Of Betrayal Trauma, Vanessa M. Jacoby
Relation Of Interpersonal Conflict Behaviors To Emotion Dysregulation And Ptsd In Adolescents With A History Of Betrayal Trauma, Vanessa M. Jacoby
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops in response to exposure to a traumatic stressor. Although this is the most well known diagnosis for individuals who have difficulties after a traumatic event, research documents numerous difficulties and psychopathology that can result from traumatic events, many of which do not fit the DSM-IV criteria of PTSD. Specifically, severe, chronic, interpersonal trauma tends to have a different pattern of effects on individuals than does acute, non-interpersonal trauma. This is particularly true for children (e.g., van der Kolk, Roth, Pelcovitz, Sunday, & Spinazzola, 2005). Because of this, the construct of Developmental …

Barriers, Facilitators, And Frequency Of Evidence Based Practice Use In Athletic Training, Michael J. Boehke
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many professions, including medicine, engineering, and design, have embraced the notion of using research to making informed decisions, thus increasing client satisfaction. Called evidence based practice (EBP) in Athletic Training; the concept is viewed as a means to promote the profession, not only through improved patient care, but also through increasing the reputation of athletic trainers as cost-effective health care providers. Over the past two decades, EBP has become a common term and subject of study. However, the extent of research regarding barriers and facilitators to the use of EBP within athletic training lags behind that of other health care …

Age And Gender Differences In Decision-Making Style Profiles, Rebecca K. Delaney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study examined Scott and Bruce's (1995) five decision-making styles (i.e. rational, intuitive, spontaneous, dependent, and avoidant) to assess potential combinations of styles using cluster analysis. The sample comprised 1,075 members from RAND's American Life Panel (56.2% female, 18-93 years, Mage = 53.49). Data was collected from a larger survey that members completed on a monthly basis. Findings yielded a three-cluster model which included: affective/experiential, dependent, and independent/self-controlled decision-making style profiles. These profiles were significantly differentiated by age and gender. Older age and being female was associated with being more likely to be in the independent/self-controlled decision-making style profile …

Body: Twenty percent of all Americans die in an intensive care unit (ICU) or shortly thereafter. For most of these patients, relentless and distressing symptoms are commonplace. Review of local data reveals opportunity for improvement in the palliative care offered to hospitalized patients. To address this need for improved palliative care, the Volunteer Hospital Association's (VHA) Communication and Care Bundle will be implemented in a local medical ICU, using Roger's (2003) diffusion of innovations (DOI) as the theoretical base.;Evaluation: Communication and Care Bundle within a given time frames, for select medical ICU patients. ICU length of stay and patient mortality …
Adjustment Of Initial- And Terminal-Link Response Patterns To Suddenly Equivalent Terminal Links, Shrinidhi Subramaniam
Adjustment Of Initial- And Terminal-Link Response Patterns To Suddenly Equivalent Terminal Links, Shrinidhi Subramaniam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three pigeons were trained on concurrent-chain schedules. Concurrent variable-interval initial links produced fixed-interval (FI) terminal links. Occasional `no-food' terminal links were interspersed pseudorandomly to obtain stop times, a single-trial measure of temporal discrimination. In rapid-acquisition conditions, terminal links were FI 10 s and FI 20 s. Across sessions, the location of the initial link leading to the shorter terminal link varied pseudorandomly. Both terminal links were FI 15 s in a uniform condition. In the rapid-acquisition conditions, initial-link response allocation tracked relative terminal-link immediacy and stop times tracked terminal-link FIs. Initial- and terminal-link pecking stabilized within the first half of …
Human Metrology For Person Classification And Recognition, Deng Cao
Human Metrology For Person Classification And Recognition, Deng Cao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Human metrological features generally refers to geometric measurements extracted from humans, such as height, chest circumference or foot length. Human metrology provides an important soft biometric that can be used in challenging situations, such as person classification and recognition at a distance, where hard biometric traits such as fingerprints and iris information cannot easily be acquired. In this work, we first study the question of predictability and correlation in human metrology. We show that partial or available measurements can be used to predict other missing measurements. We then investigate the use of human metrology for the prediction of other soft …

Compositional Techniques In Hodie By Ralph Vaughan Williams, Ah Reum Han
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hodie (This day) is Vaughan Williams's last large choral work. It is important because Vaughan Williams used not only complicated and innovative compositional techniques but also the largest instrumentation among his choral-orchestral compositions. It gives a challenging opportunity for composers who wish to learn innovative compositional techniques for vocal or choral-orchestral music. This research project will present Vaughan Williams's compositional techniques in a major choral-orchestral composition consisting of multiple movements. First, unification as a compositional method to link multiple movements by using recurring musical themes will be examined. Secondly, the treatment of biblical and non-biblical texts will be studied. Therefore, …

Exploring A Prefigurative Culture In The Immigrant Family: A Look At The Sociolinguistic Impact Of Children On The Immigrant Parent, Melissa Katherine Mcintosh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2010), 12.9% of the population in the United States is that of immigrants. With this increase in recent immigration, the population of limited English speakers has also increased which includes both children and adults. While much research has been done in terms of how bilingualism and biculturalism have impacted the children within immigrant families, very few studies have focused on the parents and how the children's English language learning and acculturation have impacted their own English learning and acculturation. This study was intended to fill that lack of research by exploring the sociolinguistic impact …
Emotion Regulation And Cardiovascular Response To Emotion Provocation: Reappraisal Versus Suppression, Casey E. Cavanagh
Emotion Regulation And Cardiovascular Response To Emotion Provocation: Reappraisal Versus Suppression, Casey E. Cavanagh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Emotion regulation is a process through which individuals alter the subjective, behavioral and physiological responses to emotional experiences. Within the emotion regulation model, reappraisal and suppression are two strategies that have been studied extensively. However, this research has largely ignored the effects of individual differences in emotion regulation when examining reappraisal and suppression. The purpose of this study was to examine individual differences in reappraisal and suppression (e.g., one's preferred emotion regulation strategy) as well as examining the effects of instructional use of reappraisal and suppression. In the present study, participants, classified as habitual reappraisers and habitual suppressors, engaged in …

American Indian Adolescents Access To And Involvement In In-School Extracurricular Activities In Relation To Substance Use Frequency And Risk Behaviors, Elizabeth A. Jones
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis looks at the protective benefits that involvement in adult-led in-school extracurricular activities had on the use of drugs and alcohol by 8th, 10th, and 12th grade American Indian adolescents in Arizona. This population has been chosen because they have a history of oppression, substance abuse, and prejudice. These adolescents represent an extremely at-risk population due to historical trauma and the present-day responses to this trauma. The researcher used data previously collected by the Arizona Youth Survey in 2010 and looked at it through the lens of Hirschi's Social Control Theory and the protective model of resilience. Hirschi's theory …

The Influence Of Gender On The Peer Leadership-Cohesion Relationship, Michael E. Berrebi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research shows that a moderate to large cohesion-performance relationship exists, suggesting teams that build strong social and task cohesion are more likely to be successful. This effect has also found to be stronger in female over male teams. Peer leadership positions are somewhat overshadowed by coach positions on sport teams but can have an important influence on a team's task and social cohesion. This study investigated the influence gender has on the peer leadership-cohesion relationship. Participants were 381 NCAA Division I male and female soccer players from 67 different universities. Each participant completed questionnaires assessing team cohesion and athlete leader …

Effects Of Fixed And Mixed Delays On Responding Under Variable-Interval Schedules, James E. Cook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Delays to reinforcement are ubiquitous in the natural environment, where those delays often vary. Still, most research examining delayed reinforcement has focused only on fixed delays. Little research has examined the effects of variable delays. Nonresetting fixed and mixed delays to reinforcement were imposed on the responding of 4 pigeons previously maintained on a multiple variable-interval (VI) VI schedule of immediate reinforcement. Mixed delays consisted of two alternating delay values, the mean of which equaled the value of the fixed delay. A progressive delay procedure was used, in which delay durations increased across successive sessions. Conditions included using unsignaled (Mixed-Change) …

Colorectal Cancer Disease In Appalachia: Symptom Interpretation And Cancer Worry Predictors, Omar F.S. Attarabeen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the Appalachian region, many cultural, religious, and psychological factors have been identified to affect health. These factors are expected to play a role in health disparities, such as higher rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality. Appalachia-specific factors such as geographic isolationism, poverty, and Appalachian stereotypes have been reported to negatively affect preventive health care including CRC screening. Although previous research has investigating the impact of some of these Appalachia-specific factors on seeking health care, impact of symptom interpretation and psychological states of the Appalachian population on health care seeking behavior needs to be clarified. The objective of …

Three Essays On Institutions, Religion, And Economic Development, Hossein Radmard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three essays that provide empirical evidence on the importance of institutions, informal institutions and particularly religion in economic development. In the first chapter, the relationship between religious adherence rate in the U.S. counties and entrepreneurship is examined. After controlling for spatial dependencies, results indicate that more religious counties, meaning counties with higher rate of religious membership, have lower entrepreneurial potentials. Chapter 2 investigates the relevance of institutional quality in efficiency of public spending. This study is delivered in the state level. By using a nonparametric method, efficiency of public spending is calculated and then its relationship …
Crisis As Opportunity: Personality Constructs And Erikson Identity Development, Christopher E. Ruth
Crisis As Opportunity: Personality Constructs And Erikson Identity Development, Christopher E. Ruth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Identity development theory suggests that the developmental trajectory from childhood through young adulthood involves a movement from exploration towards eventual tentative commitment to adult values, beliefs, and career goals. Currently little research has focused on the impact of personality traits commonly studied in personal counseling and career work with collegeattending emerging adults on the process of identity development. This study examined the predictive quality of personality preferences on Erickson's and Marcia's operationalization of identity status. More specifically, do particular personality preferences derived from the Myers- Briggs Typology Indicator more often result in particular Eriksonian identity statuses (i.e., foreclosed, diffused, moratorium …
