Designing Into The Woods: An In-Depth Analysis, Jackson Berhow
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis is intended to provide insight into the costume design process for West Virginia University’s production of Into the Woods. This thesis will document the entire process, starting with a close reading of the musical exploring its symbols, themes, and characters with some theory crafting thrown in for good measure. This will be followed by the early stages of the show’s production, as well as a full explanation of the development of each character’s design throughout the show’s conceptual evolution. The show’s production process will also be explored, highlighting notable instances and how this impacted the costume design.
Psychophysiological Tools & Techniques To Predict Perceptual Motor Task Outcomes, Bobby Gerald Rawls Iii
Psychophysiological Tools & Techniques To Predict Perceptual Motor Task Outcomes, Bobby Gerald Rawls Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The process of perceiving environmental information, analyzing it, formulating a plan of action, and carrying out said plan is vital to our day to day lives. This loop occurs for every motor task we perform, from actions as simple as elbow flexion to as complex as performing surgery. As such, it is imperative to understand what physiological, psychological, and neurocognitive factors most dictate success or failure in the motor performance loop.
Prior research has shown that measures from each of these facets have strong relationships with motor performance outcomes, though these findings tended to rely on artificially produced stress in …
Development Of Sexual Health Curriculum For West Virginia University’S Occupational Therapy Program, Abigail Jeske
Development Of Sexual Health Curriculum For West Virginia University’S Occupational Therapy Program, Abigail Jeske
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sexual health is a fundamental aspect of well-being and quality of life and impacts everyone regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation, and is relevant throughout an individual’s lifespan. Occupational therapists have a valuable role in addressing sex concepts with patients; however, a lack of education and comfort level have been identified as barriers to practitioners addressing the concepts in clinical practice. This Doctoral Capstone Experience aims to answer how the topic of sexual health can be integrated into a lifespan curriculum in formal occupational therapy education. A sexual health curriculum was created and integrated into seven different classes that …
Does The Time Spent With Same-Gender Peers Matter? Gender Segregation And Attitudes About Coercive Sex In College Students, Kourtney L. Kotvas
Does The Time Spent With Same-Gender Peers Matter? Gender Segregation And Attitudes About Coercive Sex In College Students, Kourtney L. Kotvas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gender segregation, or the tendency to form friendships with same-gender peers, is a common phenomenon across the lifespan (Mehta & Strough, 2009). Research suggests that same-gender peer groups reinforce traditional gender norms (Leaper, 2022), which may contribute to coercive sexual attitudes, which are beliefs that justify sexual coercion. This study examined how different measures of gender segregation, peer nomination, actual time spent with same-gender peers, and ideal time spent with same-gender peers relate to coercive sexual attitudes. These attitudes were assessed through rape myth acceptance, which reflects beliefs that minimize or justify sexual violence (Canan et al., 2023), and sexual …
Improving Postpartum Outcomes Through Therapeutic Individual And Group Occupational Therapy Sessions In Hospitalized Antepartum Patients, Melissa C. Learish
Improving Postpartum Outcomes Through Therapeutic Individual And Group Occupational Therapy Sessions In Hospitalized Antepartum Patients, Melissa C. Learish
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Extended hospitalization in the postpartum period is occasionally medically indicated due to a variety of diagnoses, but can pose challenges to the psychosocial well-being of pregnant women, such as social isolation, anxiety, alteration of normal life routines, and less preparation for postpartum life. In acute care settings, however, maternal management tends to focus on physical stabilization rather than holistic maternal care, including opportunities for emotional support, occupational engagement, and postpartum planning. This doctoral capstone project was designed to assess the effect of individualized and group-based occupational therapy interventions for antepartum women who have been hospitalized for extended periods of time, …
Romantic Materialities And The Politics Of Care: Negotiating Movement In A More-Than-Human World, April J. Mcginnis
Romantic Materialities And The Politics Of Care: Negotiating Movement In A More-Than-Human World, April J. Mcginnis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the ecological politics of movement in Romantic literature. It contributes to a growing body of scholarship that investigates the important role that walking played in nineteenth-century literary culture. Many authors from this period cast walking as a practice that frees up not only the body but the mind as well, as the steady rhythm of the feet lulls the walker into a state of self-absorbed introspection and heightened creativity. Because of this, walking was a celebrated part of the creative process for many writers. The freedom they celebrate is possible, however, only in spaces that are level, …
Haven: Viewing The Concept Album Through The Classical Lens, Maria Keane
Haven: Viewing The Concept Album Through The Classical Lens, Maria Keane
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research project analyzes the album Haven by Canadian pop-rock band Marianas Trench and compares it to the seminal song cycles of Franz Schubert, Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin, as well as those of Robert Schumann, Dichterliebe and Frauenliebe und Leben.
Haven is a concept album that is based on the hero’s journey framework outlined in Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand Faces. Josh Ramsay, the lead singer of the group, crafted his hero’s journey by drawing on his own life experiences. The songs on the album represent different plot points from Campbell’s framework, telling a cohesive story over …
Mourning And Haunting In Irish Gothic Fiction From The Victorian Era To Modernism, Wenyu Kong
Mourning And Haunting In Irish Gothic Fiction From The Victorian Era To Modernism, Wenyu Kong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores how three Irish modernist writers, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Macardle, and James Joyce, incorporate and reimagine tropes from the Victorian Gothic Revival to address Ireland’s uneven modernity in the first half of the twentieth century. I argue that the Irish Gothic tradition is essential for these writers to express their reflection and reaction to ongoing cultural and social turmoil in Ireland’s process of modernization during the foundation of the postcolonial Irish state. Extending Sheridan Le Fanu’s Big House Gothic legacy, Elizabeth Bowen creates haunted spaces in The Last September (1929) to describe Anglo-Ireland’s precarious situation during the War …
Improving Hospital Discharge Readiness Among Caregivers Of Children With Complex Medical Needs, Megan M. Bruce
Improving Hospital Discharge Readiness Among Caregivers Of Children With Complex Medical Needs, Megan M. Bruce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Advancements in medicine and technologies have led to an increase in the population of children living with complex and chronic health conditions. Children with medical complexities (CMCs) and their caregivers frequently have challenges navigating home life after transitioning from hospital to home-based care. A 14-week doctoral capstone project was conducted at Dayton Children’s Hospital to improve caregiver readiness for hospital discharge. Project participants included caregivers of CMCs (n = 6) admitted to the hospital and pediatric acute care occupational therapists (n = 4). The Pediatric Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale – Long Form (Peds-RHDS) was used as a pre-and post-intervention …

Abstract Feasibility of a Motor Skill Intervention for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities Candace Brink Adults with intellectual disabilities experience significantly lower levels of physical activity and a higher prevalence of obesity-related health conditions compared to neurotypical adults. Furthermore, motor competency has been identified as a barrier to physical activity participation amongst this population. Purpose: The purpose of this feasibility study was to evaluate the viability of implementing an adapted version of an evidence-based physical activity program originally developed for senior citizens, Silver Sneakers. This adapted program, Kicking Off Purple Sneakers, was designed to enhance motor competency and promote engagement in …
A Multi-Case Study Exploring Ncaa Division I Athletic Departments’ Mental Health Culture Through Stakeholders’ Perspectives, Kimberly Ann Granados Tolentino
A Multi-Case Study Exploring Ncaa Division I Athletic Departments’ Mental Health Culture Through Stakeholders’ Perspectives, Kimberly Ann Granados Tolentino
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite the NCAA’s ongoing efforts to guide athletic departments into providing sufficient mental health support to student-athletes, psychological well-being continues to be a primary area of concern for collegiate athletes. Student-athletes are as likely as the regular college population to experience mental health issues, but less likely to seek services (Watson, 2005). Researchers have continued to examine the perceived barriers preventing student-athletes from utilization of mental health services which include a lack of knowledge, limited access, and perceived negative stigma (e.g., Harris & Maher, 2023; Yoon & Petrie, 2023). Organizational culture–loosely defined as a group’s accumulated shared learning in which …
Peace Education: Exploring Educational Possibilities, Erica Ferrer Ariza
Peace Education: Exploring Educational Possibilities, Erica Ferrer Ariza
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Peace Education is a growing field of study that includes different approaches to understanding and promoting peace, conflict resolution, and social justice. Peace education can be a strategic area for societies that have experienced various forms of direct or indirect violence as is the case of Colombia, South America, which has undergone prolonged periods of violence and internal conflict. Considering that peace is contextual and should be defined and decided on by the people involved in the target context, this work aims to illuminate how a peace education process can be experienced by teachers and students and the forms it …

“We Do Everything Together!”: Examining The Effect Of A Multitasking Chore On Narrative Engagement And Parasocial Relationships With Podcast Hosts, Hailey Morgan Scherer
“We Do Everything Together!”: Examining The Effect Of A Multitasking Chore On Narrative Engagement And Parasocial Relationships With Podcast Hosts, Hailey Morgan Scherer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examined the link between media multitasking behaviors and the subsequent enhancement of narrative engagement and parasocial relationships with podcast hosts. Research on parasocial relationships has long established that people can develop strong pseudo relationships through aural media, such as radio and podcasts (e.g., Horton & Wohl, 1956). This has often been attributed to the charismatic nature of hosts on audio programs (e.g., Schlütz and Hedder, 2022; Perks & Turner, 2019; Heiselberg & Have 2023), however, the ability of people to listen while they engage in other tasks (e.g., driving or doing chores) can also enhance parasocial bonds. One …
Investigating The Psychological Determinants Of Rural Volunteer Firefighters’ Health, Occupational Performance, And Resilience, Candice Jaye Brown
Investigating The Psychological Determinants Of Rural Volunteer Firefighters’ Health, Occupational Performance, And Resilience, Candice Jaye Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Volunteer firefighters (VFFs) are essential to rural emergency response, and their ability to perform effectively depends on their mental and physical readiness. Given the high prevalence of mental and physical health challenges among VFFs, there is a critical need for research to better understand how these factors interact to develop targeted interventions that can systematically improve VFF functioning. This study addressed gaps in the literature by examining the intersections and mechanisms shaping rural VFFs’ coping functions, physical health, occupational performance, resilience, and social support. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed, beginning with a quantitative survey of 180 West …
Supporting The Professional Development Of Mentor Teachers: A School-Based Community Approach, Tenishia Ann Amos
Supporting The Professional Development Of Mentor Teachers: A School-Based Community Approach, Tenishia Ann Amos
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explored how implementing a practical, school-based professional learning community (PLC) in which mentor teachers examined mentoring practices influenced mentor teachers’ understanding of mentoring, their mentoring practices, and mentor identity. Findings suggest TE and schools alike should provide professional learning communities (PLCs) for mentor teachers to examine practices for its benefits on mentor learning. Nuanced conceptions of mentoring can help teacher education (TE) and schools better support mentor teachers in their learning (Clarke et al., 2014). Conceptions of mentoring as well as interacting discourses, such as school, teacher education, and neoliberal discourses, influenced the mentor teachers’ practices and identities. …
Framing The Moment, Shaping The Movement: News Narratives And Public Response To George Floyd’S Death, Madison B. Hall
Framing The Moment, Shaping The Movement: News Narratives And Public Response To George Floyd’S Death, Madison B. Hall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigates how national and local U.S. news outlets framed George Floyd, Black Lives Matter protesters, and the surrounding protests in the immediate aftermath of Floyd’s death. Through a qualitative content analysis of YouTube news broadcasts posted between May and June 2020, coupled with thematic analysis of popular comments that viewers posted in response, this research explores media narratives and public understanding of a pivotal moment of an ongoing racial justice movement. Drawing on framing theory and construal level theory, the study identifies a range of frames (i.e., pro-accountability, anti-accountability, raw perspective, neutral, episodic, riot) used by both local …
Individuals' Trust Of Bank Acquisitions, Christy Mccollum Knight
Individuals' Trust Of Bank Acquisitions, Christy Mccollum Knight
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent transactions within the financial services industry have seen an uptick in credit unions acquiring traditional community banks. Between the years 2020 and 2024, there were 64 announced bank mergers and acquisitions by Credit Unions, and this trend is expected to continue (S&P, 2025). As there are fundamental differences between credit unions and traditional community banks, the question arises, “How will consumer confidence and trust be affected by these mergers and acquisitions?”
This dissertation investigated how consumer trust would be affected by their propensity to trust others (Disposition to Trust), their perception of the financial services industry (Institution-Based Trust), their …

Coming Out To My Christian Loved Ones: Online Workshop Effectiveness For Increasing Lgbtq+ Individuals And Lgbtq+ Ally Communication Efficacy And Impacts On Personal-Enacted Identity Gaps, Samantha Renee Leggett-Bradley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is not uncommon for passages from the Christian Bible to produce schisms in families, friendships, mentorships, workplace relationships, individual churches, and denominations. These challenging conversations are often around LGBTQ+ topics. Many marginalized LGBTQ+ individuals and allies in these spaces become outgroup members who feel insecure and less confident enacting aspects of their own identities or identities they support. A lack of communication efficacy for how to navigate LGBTQ+ related conversations with Christian loved ones may lead to detrimental physical, mental, and emotional outcomes.
This study surveyed 134 LGBTQ+ individuals and allies as well as conducted semi structured interviews with …

Racial And Ethnic Threat And The Accessibility Of The Legal Recreational Cannabis Market In California, Kathryn L. Burnham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Racial and Ethnic Threat and the Accessibility of the Legal Recreational Cannabis Market in California
By Kathryn L. Burnham
Drug prohibition has a racialized history in the United States (US). Cannabis became synonymous with the perceived enhanced criminality of Black and Hispanic populations by the White public. Despite similar prevalence of cannabis use among people who are Black, White, and Hispanic, the vilification and stigmatization of Black and Hispanic cannabis users began in the early 1900s and continued for over a century. As individual states continue to legalize cannabis use and public opinion favors the federal legalization of cannabis, it …
A Sense Of Purpose In Life And Efforts To Increase It In Higher Education, Jacob Edwin Alderson
A Sense Of Purpose In Life And Efforts To Increase It In Higher Education, Jacob Edwin Alderson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A sense of purpose in life, defined as a dispositional tendency to pursue goals and activities in line with one’s overarching life direction (Hill, 2016), has been discussed as a key individual difference factor to foster in today’s college students (Colby, 2020; Pfund, Bono, & Hill, 2020). As such, the present dissertation sought to understand the psychosocial and academic benefits associated with having a sense of purpose in life in college via two studies: 1. Assessing changes in a sense of purpose in life across the first year of college and how these changes were associated with academic performance and …
Beyond My Control: The Role Of Sense Of Control On Cognitive Functioning And Depressive Symptoms In Older Adults, Sabine Lohmar
Beyond My Control: The Role Of Sense Of Control On Cognitive Functioning And Depressive Symptoms In Older Adults, Sabine Lohmar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Depression and depressive symptoms commonly coincide with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia in older adults (Ismail et al., 2017; Panza et al., 2010), with its prevalence varying based on dementia severity, diagnostic criteria, and dementia subtype (Chi et al., 2015; Ismail et al., 2017; Leung et al., 2021; Lopez et al., 2003). This relationship is hypothesized to exist for a variety of reasons, including that depressive symptoms occur as an emotional response to cognitive functioning (Bennett & Thomas, 2014; Richard et al., 2013). Emotional responses may be explained by a decline in sense of control, or the belief in …
The Dark Tetrad And The Intention To Invest In Cryptocurrency, Amy Bauer-Sinicin
The Dark Tetrad And The Intention To Invest In Cryptocurrency, Amy Bauer-Sinicin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Dark Tetrad comprises four distinct negative personality traits with some overlapping qualities: narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism. Characterized as being risky and speculative, cryptocurrencies are not backed by government banks like fiat currencies, nor do they offer the same privacy when engaging in transactions.
Narcissists may view cryptocurrency investment as an opportunity to showcase their financial acumen, reinforcing their self-image. Machiavellians see the decentralized, loosely regulated market as ideal for exploiting opportunities through strategic manipulation. Psychopaths, drawn by the market’s volatility, may engage in exploitative schemes for personal gain. Sadists may find satisfaction in the power and control they …
Girl Gamers, Online Community, And Social Identity Theory: The Role Of Positive Distinction Strategies On Group Engagement On R/Girlgamers, Rachael Green
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Identity theorists have studied the complex relationship between gender and gaming for over two decades, but research on how women persist in gaming communities despite harassment remains underdeveloped. Grounded in Social Identity Theory, this dissertation examines the subreddit r/GirlGamers to evaluate the prevalence and impact of positive distinction strategies in countering identity threats. Based on a mixed-methods approach, the findings highlight three key strategies (group permeability, social creativity, and social competition) alongside themes of emotion, structural inequality, and interpersonal violence. Statistical tests indicate that posts employing at least one positive distinction strategy receive significantly more upvotes and comments than those …
Neural And Computational Approach To Understanding Environmental Modulation Of Behavioral Identity In Zebrafish, John W. Hageter
Neural And Computational Approach To Understanding Environmental Modulation Of Behavioral Identity In Zebrafish, John W. Hageter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Organisms rely on behavior for survival. Animals engage in behaviors that allow for feeding, mating, exploring and navigating their environment among others. Necessary for these behaviors to develop are the environmental factors and underlying circuitry which make behavior possible. Specifically, how the environment guides underlying neural circuitry to develop unique facets or phenotypes of a larger behavior are key to understanding why unique behaviors exist. In this thesis, I build foundational evidence for determining these mechanisms through the use of the zebrafish local search behavior. This is a behavior that zebrafish employ following the loss of environmental illumination where they …
An Intersectional Approach To Examining The Impact Of Cigarette Taxes On Tobacco Use By Urbanization Level, Andrea R. Milstred
An Intersectional Approach To Examining The Impact Of Cigarette Taxes On Tobacco Use By Urbanization Level, Andrea R. Milstred
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rates of traditional tobacco use have reached a century-level low though not universally with some vulnerable populations continuing high rates of tobacco use, such as those located in geographically isolated areas of the United States (US). Rural populations experience a unique set of challenges (i.e., decreased access to health promoting resources, high density of tobacco retailers, increased pro-tobacco advertising) that compound to produce a “cumulative disadvantage” ultimately increasing their risk of tobacco use. To curb and prevent tobacco use, tobacco control policies, such as excise taxes, can be implemented. At least one study suggests tobacco control policies are less effective …
F/Utility: A Sculptural Exploration Of Futility, Utility, And The Absurd, Asha Cabaca
F/Utility: A Sculptural Exploration Of Futility, Utility, And The Absurd, Asha Cabaca
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis provides context for my MFA thesis exhibition, F/UTILITY, displayed in the Laura Mesaros Gallery at West Virginia University. My sculpture visually references various aspects of human culture, drawing from the natural environment, urban architecture, and ideas of work and play. These elements, often contradictory and incongruous, are, in fact, humorously subverted, transformed, and combined so that the resulting artwork is serious, playful, and arbitrary all at once. At the same time, the uncertain and sometimes involuntary interactivity of my work prompts a phenomenological viewer experience. My practice is informed by the philosophical and literary absurd, focusing on not-knowing …
Community Belonging: Experiences Of Outsiderness In Appalachia, Erin Hudnall
Community Belonging: Experiences Of Outsiderness In Appalachia, Erin Hudnall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study demonstrates the potential long standing social impacts of extractive industries in Appalachia, supported by historical data and literature that defines the region as a sacrifice zone or as resource cursed. As represented by key informants and the communities under observational study, West Virginia communities can exhibit dynamics indicative of collective trauma that is emplaced and complex in nature, given a historical high level of industrial intervention and social control that induced precarious economic, environmental, and social circumstances. Some of the main “symptoms” of this collective trauma are an aversion to outsider intervention and nostalgia about the past that …
