Adolescent Autonomy Development And Problematic Eating Patterns, Kaitlyn A. Ferris Jan 2012

Adolescent Autonomy Development And Problematic Eating Patterns, Kaitlyn A. Ferris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adolescence is a developmental time period associated with increased autonomy from parents and more independent decision-making. Adolescents strive to control areas of their life once solely controlled by parents, and food and eating decisions are two areas over which adolescents may want to have sole control. In addition, there may be heterogeneity in adolescents' beliefs about food-related behavior as well as adolescents' actual eating patterns. The current study examined parents' and adolescents' domain beliefs about food and whether adolescents' domain beliefs about such behaviors were associated with problematic eating patterns. Participants included 102 female caregiver-adolescent dyads with children between the …

Choice Of Signaled Or Unsignaled Onset Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitudes, Ezra G. Hall Jan 2012

Choice Of Signaled Or Unsignaled Onset Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitudes, Ezra G. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the most common operant procedure involving magnitude of reinforcement, single reinforcers, of one magnitude or the other, are available from the same source (with pigeons, a food hopper) at different times. The duration of access as a source of discriminative control by these reinforcers comes sometime after their onset, when one reinforcer continues for a longer duration than the other. Thus, reinforcers of different durations can be differentially reinforcing only after the passage of some time. In the current experiment, four pigeons responded on a single-key concurrent variable-time schedule of reinforcement. Two reinforcer durations, 2 s and 6 s, …

Predictors Of Adherence To Mammography Screening Guidelines And Preferences For Intervention Strategies In A Mobile Mammography Program, Ami Vyas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Early detection of breast cancer (BC) in women can lead to long-term survival and better quality of life. Mammography screening is considered to be the 'gold standard' for women at an average risk to detect BC early and hence reduce BC-related mortality. West Virginia (WV) has a lower incidence of BC but higher rates of advanced and unstaged BC which has been attributed to lower mammography screening rates in women in WV. Mobile mammography programs have been in use for more than two decades to overcome barriers and increase mammography screening rates in rural and hard-to-reach populations. WV has one …

Coca Or Death! The Political Ecology Of Cocalero Resistance A Comparative Analysis Of The Coca Farmer Social Movement In Andean Peru., Timothy Scott Pruett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research focuses on the resistance of coca farmers to government policies regarding coca production in Peru. Since the 1980s, the Peruvian government has criminalized the actions of numerous agricultural communities and conducted eradication campaigns that destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of Peruvian coca. Although eradication is intended to reduce the volume of coca leaves destined for black markets (cocaine production), it has had the unintended consequence of mobilizing peasant coca producing populations against such policies. Mobilization is reflected in protests, strikes, marches, and occasionally violent confrontations. Some coca farmers (cocaleros) are following a cultural heritage of producing a …

"Near-By Nature": A Logical Framework For Building Integrated Agriculture., William Plyler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Building Integrated Agriculture (BIA) aims to reduce the environmental footprint of food production and to improve the human condition. BIA places food producing plants into the everyday working/living environment. This study explored the intersection of the diverse BIA requirements (human, plant, and building) as established by the relevant literature from various disciplines. Kaplan (1992), and Ulrich (1984; 1986; 1992) established the restorative physiological and psychological effects of plants in non-natural settings. Kaplan deemed these settings “Near-by Nature.” In building interiors, “Near-by Nature” is achieved through interiorscaping, a design practice that incorporates plant, building and occupant requirements. This study specifically investigated …

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Methods For Prediction Of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Percent Dry Weight, Andrew William Hafs Dec 2011

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Methods For Prediction Of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Percent Dry Weight, Andrew William Hafs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reliable fish condition estimates are valued by fisheries ecologists and managers. Fish condition is used as an indicator of ecosystem health or to assess the population status for a species of interest. In aquaculture, proximate composition estimates are often wanted because of their relationship to fillet quality. Past researchers have used bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to provide nonlethal mass based estimates of proximate composition for fish. Percent dry weight (PDW) of a fish is highly correlated to proximate composition values and energy density, therefore reliable predictions of PDW would eliminate the need for costly and laboratory analyses lethal to the …

Can Changes In Sr Protein Acetylation Affect Alternative Splicing?, Heather E. Knupp Dec 2011

Can Changes In Sr Protein Acetylation Affect Alternative Splicing?, Heather E. Knupp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cellular phenotype and function is determined by the cellular proteome. Within the cellular proteome there are processes that have a potential to significantly alter the composition of the proteome. One such process is called alternative splicing. Splicing is the removal of introns from a pre-mRNA sequence and the remaining pre-mRNA sequences, called exons, are combined. Alternative splicing modifies the intron-exon combination, and can form novel products from the different arrangement of the coding sequences. This process, due to the high potential for new, possibly unwanted products, is highly regulated and can occur in a tissue and developmental-specific fashion. The misreguation …

Exploring Influences On Parent Support For Child Physical Activity In West Virginia, Jill A. Nolan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Physical activity enhances child health. On average, boys are more active than girls. The causes of this disparity are not fully known, but are likely due to factors at multiple levels including individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy. Further, gender stereotypes that associate males with sports and physical activity behavior may also influence child physical activity. What is known is that girls benefit from physical activity just as boys do, and that parental support for boys' physical activity is generally higher than is parental support for girls. Additionally, parental supportive behavior for childhood physical activity is positively associated with increased …

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the United States. Significant research into the risk factors for cardiovascular disease has been done, and the effect of hyperlipidemia on cardiovascular risk has been well documented. Recent research has shown that there is a lack of adherence to lipid guidelines by primary care providers. Failure to follow clinical guidelines for lipid disorders leads to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The objective of the project was to evaluate whether a simple, paper-based, lipid tracking form could improve provider adherence to current lipid guidelines. This descriptive study used …

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain Aug 2011

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years several mechanistic animal studies have proposed new insights, including the role of endothelial dysfunction, in the pathogenesis of common cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies in humans have followed up these emerging leads from animal models. Because traditional risk factors have been shown not to completely explain all the observed risk of cardiometabolic outcomes in the general population, there is a need to examine novel mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction in population-based studies, so as to identify new ways of preventing and/or treating these diseases. …
