Combinatorial Real-Time High Throughput Analyses Of Cell Behavior Upon Exposure To Analytes, Reem Eldawud
Combinatorial Real-Time High Throughput Analyses Of Cell Behavior Upon Exposure To Analytes, Reem Eldawud
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The majority of current techniques to assess the toxicity of analytes (i.e., nanomaterials, drugs and toxins) in vitro rely on the application of affinity or catalytic recognition elements (i.e., biosensors), their activity, sensitivity and selectivity, as well as the processing power of micro- and opto-detection devices. For instance, water-soluble tetrazolium (WST-1) assay is among the most common techniques used to measure the viability of cells following exposure. Specifically, in this assay a catalytic biosensor (tetrazolium salt) is reduced by cellular NAD(P)H-dependent oxidoreductase or mitochondrial dehydrogenases resulting in colorimetric changes quantified using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (detection element). Similarly, imaging of cellular …
Characterizations Of The Marcellus Shale Petrophysical Properties, Mohamed Elsaig
Characterizations Of The Marcellus Shale Petrophysical Properties, Mohamed Elsaig
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The application of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have made hydrocarbon production economically viable from the unconventional shale formations. Statistics show that currently, hydrocarbon production from shale formations play a major role in the overall production of hydrocarbon in the United States. However, the petrophysical characteristics of the shale which influence the hydrocarbon recovery and the optimization of hydraulic fracturing treatments have not been well established.;The characteristics of the unconventional formations, such as shale with ultra-low permeability, are often measured by unsteady-state techniques. The results of the unsteady state measurements, however, cannot be corrected for the pore and confining pressures …
An Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable Mobile Memory Interface For Computing Systems, Majid Jalali Far
An Energy-Efficient Reconfigurable Mobile Memory Interface For Computing Systems, Majid Jalali Far
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The critical need for higher power efficiency and bandwidth transceiver design has significantly increased as mobile devices, such as smart phones, laptops, tablets, and ultra-portable personal digital assistants continue to be constructed using heterogeneous intellectual properties such as central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), digital signal processors, dynamic random-access memories (DRAMs), sensors, and graphics/image processing units and to have enhanced graphic computing and video processing capabilities. However, the current mobile interface technologies which support CPU to memory communication (e.g. baseband-only signaling) have critical limitations, particularly super-linear energy consumption, limited bandwidth, and non-reconfigurable data access. As a consequence, there …
Homeplace, Megan Leigh Gainer
Homeplace, Megan Leigh Gainer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The sculptural work presented in this thesis and the accompanying exhibition showcase the ideas of memory, its fallacy, and why certain objects become tied to the idea of a specific time, place, and culture. Using my own personal experiences growing up in rural West Virginia, I call upon traditional crafting techniques to relay a sense of nostalgia commonly found throughout Appalachia. The expression of the hand present throughout the work highlights the importance placed on these seemingly mundane objects, which hold a special place in my history.
Development Of A Cobinamide-Based Optical Sensor For Hydrogen Cyanide And Hydrogen Sulfide, Lee Ann Greenawald
Development Of A Cobinamide-Based Optical Sensor For Hydrogen Cyanide And Hydrogen Sulfide, Lee Ann Greenawald
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In an occupational or military environment, a personal air-purifying respirator must be provided when breathing-air is contaminated by harmful dust, fumes, gases, aerosols, or vapors. Too often, a respirator user does not have enough information to know when to change his/her cartridge/canister and thus is potentially exposed to toxic gases. Currently, there is no definitive way to determine when respirators' carbon beds have begun to fail. When an end-of-service-life indicator (ESLI) is incorporated into the carbon bed, it informs one, in real-time, when imminent breakthrough is occurring and to replace the cartridge/canister. ESLIs are a more reliable and safer way …

Distribution And Efficacy Of Chemotherapeutics In The Treatment Of Preclinical Brain Metastases Of Breast Cancer, Tori Terrell Hall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Brain metastases are a critical, life-threatening problem for women with advanced metastatic breast cancer. Approximately 80% of women with disseminated central lesions are unable to survive the first year after diagnosis. Despite the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, chemotherapeutics have limited penetration and distribution into brain metastases and are unable to induce cytotoxicity in the tumor. Limiting the development of new treatments for brain metastases of breast cancer, there are no commercially available in vitro models available that accurately model, and mimic the functionality of, the in vivo blood-tumor barrier (BTB). In an attempt to address the aforementioned problem, the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Residential, commercial, and industrial lighting applications contribute to ∼19% of total energy consumption worldwide. The application of more efficient sources of lighting, such as solid-state lighting (SSL) sources, could result in potential energy savings of about 65%. Current technologies employ semiconductor-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the core elements of SSL devices to provide general-purpose light in a wide range of color temperatures. However, there still exists several device level issues, such as poor material quality, low quantum efficiencies, large percentage of light being trapped, etc. These non-idealities are barriers for SSL sources replacing incandescent and compact fluorescent sources on an …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Tensleep oil reservoir at Teapot Dome, Wyoming, USA, is a naturally fractured tight sandstone reservoir that has been considered for carbon-dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) and sequestration. CO2-EOR analysis requires a thorough understanding of the Tensleep fracture network. Wireline image logs from the field suggest that the reservoir fracture network is dominated by early formed structural hinge oblique fractures with interconnectivity enhanced by hinge parallel and hinge perpendicular fracture sets. Available post stack 3D seismic data are used to generate a seismic fracture intensity attribute for the reservoir fracture network. The resulting seismic fracture intensity is qualitatively correlated to …

Elucidating Mechanisms Of Canonical Wnt - Ephrin-B Crosstalk, William Tyler Koch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Throughout development, canonical Wnt signaling contributes to the formation and maintenance of a wide array of cells, tissues, and organs. Dys-regulated Wnt signaling during embryonic development is implicated in developmental defects known as neurochristopathies, including craniofacial and heart defects, as well as defects in neural development. Due to its roles in stem cell maintenance and self-renewal, tissue homeostasis, and regeneration, aberrant Wnt signaling in adult tissues can result in various forms of cancer, including colorectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and gastro-intestinal cancer, among others. Dys-regulated Wnt signaling is also implicated in other pathologies including bone disease, and metabolic diseases, …
Walking Out Of Step: U.S.-Israel Relations And The Peace Process, 1967-1975, Kenny Kolander
Walking Out Of Step: U.S.-Israel Relations And The Peace Process, 1967-1975, Kenny Kolander
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the development of U.S.-Israel relations during a crucial period---the Presidencies of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, 1968--76. This was a crucial period because U.S. aid to Israel skyrocketed during these years, especially military aid. Importantly, U.S.--Israel relations are examined not only through presidential policies, which other scholars have done, but also through congressional activity. Congress consistently pushed both Presidents to sell more and more weapons to Israel, which would allow the U.S. to project strength abroad during the Cold War---especially given the deteriorating situation in Vietnam---and create job opportunities at home during the hard economic times of …

Platform Gratifications: Tinder Vs. Match.Com, Cassandra Lang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examined user's experiences using dating applications by applying a uses and gratifications lens to investigate the gratifications of two different dating platforms. Specifically, this study drew upon past computer-mediated research to compare the gratifications obtained from a Tinder-like platform and a Match.com-like platform. The experiment found no significant differences between the gratifications levels of the two platforms types. However, female participants reported significantly lower levels of the "relaxation" gratification levels then males. The study also found identical ordinal gratification levels for the two platforms explored. The findings expand the study of mobile dating applications.

To date there has been no research to support the number of test fires needed to represent the variability present within a firearm. When a suspect firearm is submitted to a firearm examiner, test fires are performed to collect fired cartridge cases for comparison purposes. Typically, two to four test fires are performed for every firearm. The recovered cartridge cases are compared to each other to determine which characteristics from the firearm …
Multi-Scale Simulation Of Carbon Capture Processes Based On Mesoporous Silica-Supported, Polyethyleneimine-Impregnated Sorbents, Kuijun Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The mechanism of CO2 uptake in silica-supported, polyethylenimine (PEI)-impregnated sorbents under dry and humid conditions has been investigated in a new chemical model based on quantum chemical calculations and a comparison of reaction-diffusion models with experimental data. First-principles quantum chemical calculations showed that the zwitterion, which is not stable in the gas phase even when considering a polar environment similar to water, can be stabilized by nearby water and amine molecules. Stabilized zwitterions serve as diffusive intermediates to transport adsorbed CO2 into the PEI bulk. Compared to amine-stabilized zwitterions, water-stabilized zwitterions are more numerous and have a lower activation energy …

Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cerebrovascular diseases are any pathological conditions that are caused by disruptions or alterations in the blood supply to the brain. The brain, which is only 2% of body mass, constantly requires a minimum of 20% of cardiac output to meet its unique metabolic demands. Cerebral tissue relies on aerobic respiration and therefore requires a constant, steady supply of blood to provide oxygen and glucose to make ATP. Insufficient perfusion of the brain, which occurs as a result of reduced or obstructed blood flow, results in cerebral ischemia; ischemic neurons quickly deplete their available ATP and die if blood flow is …

Application Of 1,2,3-Triazole In Gold Catalysis And Photoredox Catalysis, Rong Cai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Homogeneous gold catalysis has envisioned a rapid development during the past decade due to the remarkable efficiency of Au(I) in alkyne and allene activation. Air and thermally stable triazapentalene zwitterionic compounds (TAPZ) were prepared through Au(I)-catalyzed triazole-alkyne 5-endo-dig cyclization. While effective gold catalyst turnover was achieved, the stability of these new 10-pi-electron bicyclic structures was also significantly improved through the introduction of electron-withdrawing groups, which allowed the further application of these fluorescent dyes in cell imaging.;Silver salts are generally used for the activation of LAuCl through Cl - removal, and they are assumed to be innocent in Au(I) catalysis. For …
