Student attitude toward music class was measured by a semantic differential adapted by the researcher: the "Music Class Attitude Scale." Forty-eight general music classes were randomly assigned one …
Dissolution Kinetics Of Hydrocortisone Into Polymer Solutions (Steroids)., Nahla Nassar Khoury
Dissolution Kinetics Of Hydrocortisone Into Polymer Solutions (Steroids)., Nahla Nassar Khoury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A major concern of investigators during the last decade has been the evaluation of the relative therapeutic effectiveness of competitive drug products. The problem of bioavailability is further exaggerated for steroidal drugs formulated as suspensions because of low intrinsic solubility, and the addition of stabilizing ingredients, such as polymers, to the formulations. An in vitro evaluation of the dissolution rate of hydrocortisone alcohol and acetate from constant surface area tablets into dilute polymer solutions was undertaken since dissolution rate is a relevant characteristic concerning therapeutic availability for sparingly soluble drugs. Polymers of varying chemical type and in dilute concentrations, similar …
Mechanisms Of Particle Transfer In A Liquid, Liquid System: Model Particle Study., Che-An Ku
Mechanisms Of Particle Transfer In A Liquid, Liquid System: Model Particle Study., Che-An Ku
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The wetting characteristics of silica microbeads are modified by varying the reaction between the surface silanols with t-butyldimethylchlorosilane. The wicking method is used to obtain the contact angle of the particle systems. Increasing hydrophobicity is observed with increasing silanizing reaction. The surface free energy of particles are calculated from the contact angle data. Nondispersive contribution decreases with increasing hydrophobicity while dispersive component remains unchanged. A mathematical model is developed which considers both the hydrodynamics and the induction times of the system. The transfer rates to and from the water phase are first order with respect to the particle concentrations in …
A Model Of Disequilibrium Adjustments Between Spot And Futures Markets (Econometrics)., Randy E. Holliday
A Model Of Disequilibrium Adjustments Between Spot And Futures Markets (Econometrics)., Randy E. Holliday
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines commodity markets with futures trading. In particular it attempts to model commodity markets with futures trading by integrating aspects of both futures and spot markets. It is argued that factors that affect the spot market, will affect the futures market, and vice versa. Therefore, a model describing a commodity with futures trading should depict the interaction between these two markets. The second area of interest in this dissertation is the short run disequilibrium aspects of commodity markets with futures trading. The characteristics of disequilibrium discussed include lags, expectations, excess demand, excess speculative demand and learning. Expectations are …

Multivariable System Identification Coal Gasification Process., Ali Reza Delavari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Obtaining information on the dynamic behavior of a system or process for ultimate use in control strategies is essential. Identification of a system in real time is divided into two areas, parametric and non-parametric. In the non-parametric method a model is not assumed for the system, while in the parametric method a prior assumption of a given model form with unknown parameters is necessary. The objectives of this research are: (a) Detail studies of various methods of parametric identification in transfer function form, developing and extending some of these methods and a new method for multivariable discrete-time systems. Many criterions …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fluidized bed combustion offers a clean and relatively inexpensive method for coal combustion. There are various physical and chemical processes occurring in the fluidized bed combustor, some of which are investigated in this work. Devolatilization and combustion of a single coal char particle, minimum fluidization velocity at high temperatures, fluidization regimes, and SO(,2) release rates in FBC are the areas examined in this work. The mode of release of volatiles can be instantaneous or uniform depending on the relative magnitudes of mixing time and devolatilization time. The burnout time of large coke particles (> 2 mm) can be as high …
Electromagnetic Geophysical Tomography Incorporating Refraction And Reflection., Roger Dale Radcliff
Electromagnetic Geophysical Tomography Incorporating Refraction And Reflection., Roger Dale Radcliff
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An accurate technique for remotely determining the internal structure of an object or underground environment would have a significant impact in mining, geoexploration, and the life sciences. This process of resolving the intrinsic properties of an object or environment by the transmission of X-rays or electromagnetic waves through the unknown anomaly is known as reconstructive imaging or tomography. Several efforts have been made to apply tomographical methods to electromagnetic measurements taken between two boreholes on either side of an unknown geophysical structure. However, it became necessary, because of the nature of existing reconstruction methods, to assume a straight-line propagation path …

Ion-Exchange Properties Of Chemically And Physically Modified Graphite., Thomas Matthew Matviya
Ion-Exchange Properties Of Chemically And Physically Modified Graphite., Thomas Matthew Matviya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Organic compounds capable of ion-exchange were adsorbed on granular graphite. The ion-exchange capacity of the graphite modified in this manner was found to be limited to (DBLTURN) 10('-6) eq/g of graphite by the available surface area of the graphite. Acidic surface oxides on the graphite interfered with the determination of the contribution of the adsorbed organic compounds to ion-exchange. An electrically conductive ion-exchange medium was developed by partially oxidizing granular graphite with strong oxidizing agents. The reaction of graphite with K(,2)Cr(,2)O(,7) in concentrated H(,2)SO(,4) was extensively studied. The ion-exchange capacity of the oxidized graphite for H('+) and divalent metal ions …
Coal Mine Productivity Assessment As Influenced By Equipment Reliability And Availability., Francisco Lopez Viray
Coal Mine Productivity Assessment As Influenced By Equipment Reliability And Availability., Francisco Lopez Viray
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Feasible methods, measures and models which can be used to assess the availability of a continuous mine system are developed. The models, based on a simplified representation of room-and-pillar mining, are derived using the principles of Markov processes. A new measure of system reliability and performance, called the penalized availability is defined. This measure can be applied to any process flow system whose output may be derated due to failures of certain components. Three reliability indices which measure coal productivity in terms of equipment reliability and maintainability are defined. These indices are linearly related to the penalized availability by such …

Interindustry Linkages And Industrial Clusters: A Comparative Analysis., Anthony Louis Loviscek
Interindustry Linkages And Industrial Clusters: A Comparative Analysis., Anthony Louis Loviscek
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The foundation of interdependence among industries is the system of interindustry linkages. An interindustry linkage is the operational connection of flows of material and information among the industrial units of an economic system. By analyzing linkages, economists are able to work out impacts of changes in industrial activity on an economy. Entries of input-output tables provide measurements of inter-industry linkages. The rows of a table represent forward linkages, or connections further along the production process. The columns represent backward linkages, or connections with input suppliers. In recent years, regional and urban analysts have focused on clusters of industries for explaining …
A Free-Vortex Model With Numerical Solution For The Unsteady Lifting Characteristics Of Straight Bladed Darrieus Wind Turbines., Paul Gerald Migliore
A Free-Vortex Model With Numerical Solution For The Unsteady Lifting Characteristics Of Straight Bladed Darrieus Wind Turbines., Paul Gerald Migliore
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A method has been developed to analyze the flow and predict the lifting characteristics of vertical axis wind turbines. Blades are modelled by a number of discrete bound vortices located on the airfoil mean camber line; the wake is modelled by a number of discrete vortices shed from the blade trailing edge. Application of the flow tangency boundary condition and the Kutta condition permit a numerical solution for the strengths of the bound vortices. Blade forces are then determined from potential theory. This vortex model faithfully reflects the important phenomena of flow unsteadiness and wake/blade interaction. Wake details and energy …
Dynamic Responses Of A Multi-Layered Rectangular Plate On Viscoelastic Foundation Due To Moving Loads., Cheng-Jer Lin
Dynamic Responses Of A Multi-Layered Rectangular Plate On Viscoelastic Foundation Due To Moving Loads., Cheng-Jer Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Investigation presents the formulation of a general equation of motion and its analytic and numerical solution for the determination of the dynamic deflections and stresses of a multilayered rectangular plate on viscoelastic foundation subject to a constant force travelling at a constant velocity. Various combinations of simply-supported, clamped, and free edge conditions of the plate are studied. A multi-layered plate has in general two shifting "neutral" planes, one in which ax«=0 while OyfQ and another, 0y“O while Oj^O. They are not only at different locations, but also change their locations in the plate depending on the loads or curvatures …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this report a new method to design reinforced concrete floor slabs which terminate at edge beams is presented. The design procedure uses the Modified Yield Line Theory of Kemp and Wilhelm to account for the influence of torsional stiffness of edge beams on the load carrying capacity of slab and also to provide the economic reinforcement. Serviceability requirement of the structure is satisfied by using the "exact" elastic solution and the experimental and theoretical work of this investigation. The necessary theoretical derivations of the "exact" elastic solution of square panels, design formulas to proportion the spandrels of both rectangular …
The Shifting Of The Public Utility Property Tax., Robert Keith Perdue
The Shifting Of The Public Utility Property Tax., Robert Keith Perdue
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study consisted of a theoretical and empirical analysis of the property tax shifting behavior of the monopolist that is subject to rateof-return regulation. The theoretical analysis found that if the rateof-return constraint is continuously enforced, then the property tax shifting behavior of the profit or sales maximizing regulated monopolist will not differ from that of its unregulated counterpart. If, however, the regulatory constraint is only sporadically enforced, then differences in tax shifting behavior between regulated and unregulated monopolists can exist. Whether regulation is continuous or sporadic, however, merely allowing the regulated monopolist an after-tax return cannot guarantee that the …
