Mathematical Analysis For The Hydrodynamic Model Of Semiconductors., Chen Zhu Jan 1997

Mathematical Analysis For The Hydrodynamic Model Of Semiconductors., Chen Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis we study two cases of the hydrodynamic model of semiconductors: the nonisentropic case for one species and the isentropic case for two species. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the asymptotic stability of the steady state solutions for these two cases. First we show the existence of a one-parameter family of steady state solutions. Each steady state solution is uniquely determined by the momentum. Then, we prove that every steady state solution is asymptotically stable. Namely, if the initial data is "close" to a given steady state solution, then the dynamic solution will asymptotically approaches …

A Parametric Study Of Knock Control Strategies For A Bi-Fuel Engine., William Scott Wayne Jan 1997

A Parametric Study Of Knock Control Strategies For A Bi-Fuel Engine., William Scott Wayne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A numerical thermodynamic model was developed and employed to investigate the use of elevated compression ratios, variable valve timing, and ignition timing modulation as a means of controlling knock and improving the performance of a bi-fuel engine. The proposed strategy employed an increased compression ratio to boost power and torque when operating on natural gas. An increased intake duration and retarded ignition timing were then employed to control knock during gasoline operation. Dynamometer testing was performed on a 1.9 liter Saturn{dollar}\\sp\\circler{dollar} engine to provide empirical data for model calibration and to evaluate the effects of proposed changes on engine emissions. …

Crime And The Nation: Prison Reform And Popular Fiction In Philadelphia, 1786-1800., Peter Thomas Okun Jan 1997

Crime And The Nation: Prison Reform And Popular Fiction In Philadelphia, 1786-1800., Peter Thomas Okun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The prison reformers and fiction writers of post-Revolutionary Philadelphia wrote prodigiously about crime and punishment. In a correlative study, I explore juridical topoi in reformist and fictive texts familiar to republican Philadelphians. My analysis assumes a public sphere of writers and readers: while late eighteenth-century prison reforms and fictions came out of separate signifying systems, there was considerable promiscuity between them. I group areas of overlap around cultural concerns (science, murder, sex) and representational "spaces" (home, prison, nation). In either discourse, crime and punishment were useful to a post-Revolutionary aesthetic of nationalism. The scientific rhetoric of penitentiary punishment targeted the …

Performance-Tunable Distributed Execution Of Object-Based Software., George Braden Rinard Jan 1997

Performance-Tunable Distributed Execution Of Object-Based Software., George Braden Rinard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The central challenge in software engineering research and practice is to improve the quality and performance of software systems, while decreasing the cost for producing such systems. While the combination of parallel execution with component-based software construction provides opportunities for addressing the software development challenge, it also raises a fundamental distributed software engineering dilemma, not adequately addressed in the literature. This dilemma is a result of the following two observations: (1) The quality and productivity benefits of reusability accrue only when reusable components are used without modifications. (2) For improved performance in a distributed environment, it must be possible to …

Robust Design Optimization With Applications To Composite-Material Structures., Satheesh Makkapati Jan 1997

Robust Design Optimization With Applications To Composite-Material Structures., Satheesh Makkapati

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The problem of robust design and optimization for designs with varying operating conditions is considered in this work. A robust design optimization tool (RDOT) has been developed in this work. The tool is constructed with building blocks: an Artificial Neural Network, a Response Evaluator (e.g., FEA, etc.), an Optimizer based on Quadratic Programming, Cooperative Game Theory, Design of Experiments, and Taguchi Methods. The tool is fully codified into a computer program, and it demands very little designer insight into the problem under consideration. Design optimization is necessary to efficiently accomplish a design that, while satisfying the desired functionality, also uses …

A Neural Network Based Inference Engine Generator For Comprehension And Translation Of English And Spanish Commands To Unix "E-Mail" And "Vi" Editor., Mohammad Reza Moozoun Jan 1997

A Neural Network Based Inference Engine Generator For Comprehension And Translation Of English And Spanish Commands To Unix "E-Mail" And "Vi" Editor., Mohammad Reza Moozoun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the advent of computers, scientists have tried to use the human languages for communication with computers. This pursuit has led several scientists, such as Chomsky to establish that there must be a specific part of the brain adapted to language learning and processing genetically, namely the "language organ". Humans are able to understand and produce sentences that they may have never heard. This leads to the understanding that language must follow some strict rules of processing which is referred to as "grammar of a language". The Artificial Neural Networks (NN) inspired by the neural networks of biological systems have …

Comparison Of A Pin Cam And An Inverted Pin Cam Design Based On The Parameters Used For The Axial Vane Rotary Engine (Beta Version)., Phillip Howard Burnside Jan 1997

Comparison Of A Pin Cam And An Inverted Pin Cam Design Based On The Parameters Used For The Axial Vane Rotary Engine (Beta Version)., Phillip Howard Burnside

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The comparison of two design variations of the Axial Vane Rotary Engine (AVRE) was done by evaluating several parameters. These two designs are called the Pin Cam and the Inverted Pin Cam designs. The first step involved developing a technique to determine the heat loads on the components of the engines since the engine is running at a steady state loading condition. The second step used this thermal data to get a final temperature profile. The third step combined the thermal data and the combustion data to perform a structural analysis of the engine components. This illustrated both the stresses …

Faculty Stance Toward Multiculturalism And Multicultural Education: A Qualitative Study., Jane Sheridan Cardi Jan 1997

Faculty Stance Toward Multiculturalism And Multicultural Education: A Qualitative Study., Jane Sheridan Cardi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studies indicate that the implementation of multiculturalism into university general education course requirements such as introductory American literature is sporadic. Furthermore, although research suggests that faculty are more frequently including multicultural literature in their courses, there is little research concerning what faculty believe about multiculturalism and multicultural education and how faculty actually teach multiculturalism in higher education. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of why faculty do or do not implement multiculturalism into their curricula and if they do, how they implement it. This study uses phenomenological and hermeneutic research methods to explore the stances, …

A Comparative Study Of The Development Of Educational Psychology In China And America., Huiping Liu Cervenka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Some people argue that Western psychology and Asian psychology are fundamentally different and irreconcilable. Western psychology is scientific and analytic-reductionistic, while Asian psychology is concerned with man's harmony{dollar}\\...{dollar} (in Paranjpe et al, 1988, p18). This study examines and compares the scientific roots of Western psychology and the humanistic roots of Asian psychology in an attempt to determine commonality between Chinese and American educational psychology. A historical comparative method is used in this study. Two approaches, the personalistic and the naturalistic are employed to examine the development of educational psychology in China and America. Results show that Western psychology has been …

There Was Something In The Water: Parallels In Paradigms In English And Physics, 1880 To 1940., Tracy Joan Demars Jan 1997

There Was Something In The Water: Parallels In Paradigms In English And Physics, 1880 To 1940., Tracy Joan Demars

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study posits that a paradigm is a shared vision of reality that governs how practitioners define and relate to the many and varied components that make up that reality. Using this definition, the author presents a visual model using concentric spheres of increasing abstraction that rearrange T. S. Kuhn's four components of a disciplinary matrix that he articulated in the 1969 Postscript to The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Based on this model and D'Amico's criteria for a coherent narrative, the study assesses the two primary paradigms, labeled the Object-Oriented paradigm and the Subject-Oriented paradigm, that existed in the fields …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Old newspaper (ONP) is the largest single component (14%) of total U.S. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The rising problems associated with disposal of MSW in landfills can be dealt with if the volume of the waste stream is reduced by recycling. The wastepaper recycling market, in particular ONP, has not been successful in utilizing the ONP generated. The existence of high sunk costs for entry into deinking market, along with the small numbers of buyers in the ONP market were identified as reasons that the ONP market had oligopsony elements. This research examined oligopsony in the ONP market and its …

A Laboratory Study Of The Geochemistry Of Anoxic Limestone Drains., Patrick Lynn Sterner Jan 1997

A Laboratory Study Of The Geochemistry Of Anoxic Limestone Drains., Patrick Lynn Sterner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) through the use of anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) is a technology that has shown mixed success. Precipitation of solid phase materials, primarily Fe{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} and Al{dollar}\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar} hydroxides, inhibits limestone dissolution by presumably creating a barrier between the limestone surface and the AMD, which impedes neutralization at an optimum rate. A laboratory project was initiated to: monitor geochemical transformations of reactive species ({dollar}\\rm Al\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub},\\ Fe\\sp{lcub}3+{rcub}{dollar}, and SO{dollar}\\sb4\\sp{lcub}2-{rcub}{dollar}), determine solid phases controlling precipitation reactions, and determine a kinetic model for limestone dissolution in ALDs. Laboratory ALDs were constructed and filled with graded, washed limestone. Three sampling ports …

Despite the complexity of myriad technical means, some individuals have been successful in utilizing advanced technologies for expressive purposes. The purpose of this study was to examine the methods these individuals employed to access and apply sophisticated technologies for expressive production. A qualitative research methodology consisting of …

Nucleation And Growth Of Gan On Sapphire By Mbe, Steven Buczkowski Jan 1996

Nucleation And Growth Of Gan On Sapphire By Mbe, Steven Buczkowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

GaN was grown by molecular beam epitaxy in an effort to determine nucleation and growth conditions which lead to high quality, single-crystal films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to show that growth under Ga-rich conditions promotes the nucleation of films with large nucleation domains leading to a lower density of intrinsic defects related to domain boundaries. These conditions are also shown to promote a 2-D growth mode resulting in films with a high degree of nucleation domain coalescence and surface roughnesses below 2 nm. Addition of atomic hydrogen, using a thermally-cracked source, is shown to increase the growth rate …

Nonlinear Chemical Dynamics: Competition And Convection Effects In Reaction-Diffusion Fronts And Controlling Chaos., Jonathan Masere Jan 1996

Nonlinear Chemical Dynamics: Competition And Convection Effects In Reaction-Diffusion Fronts And Controlling Chaos., Jonathan Masere

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Competition and convection effects in reaction-diffusion fronts and controlling chaos are studied. In Chapter 3 we report theoretical studies of competition in which two self-replicating organic molecules compete for a common reactant. We found that the self-replicating organic molecule can give sustained reaction-diffusion fronts. This phenomenon is investigated by numerical solutions of partial differential equations that couple local nonlinear kinetics and diffusion. Reaction-diffusion fronts involving competing species are then initiated and the concentration profiles of the autocatalysts monitored. The results show that the more reactive species totally predominates over the less reactive species as its front moves ahead into the …
