Pilot Fatigue Detection Using Aircraft State Variables, Benjamin L. Smith
Pilot Fatigue Detection Using Aircraft State Variables, Benjamin L. Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pilot fatigue has been proven to be the cause of many aviation accidents. Fatigue introduces error into the pilot's inputs, which can potentially lead to accidents. To date, fatigue has been widely researched through physiological variables and sleep studies. Often, systems monitoring physiological variables would require constant physical contact with the pilot during flight. This arrangement could be cumbersome to pilots, and may hinder their flying ability even more. These systems will also add unnecessary weight to the aircraft, which could lead to increases in fuel consumption. Sleep studies have been investigated in an attempt to determine causes of pilot …
Performance And Area Optimization For Reliable Fpga-Based Shifter Design, Zahid Ali Syed
Performance And Area Optimization For Reliable Fpga-Based Shifter Design, Zahid Ali Syed
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis addresses the problem of implementing reliable FPGA-based shifters. An FPGA-based design requires optimization between performance and resource utilization, and an effective verification methodology to validate design behavior. The FPGA-based implementation of a large shifter design is restricted by an I/O resource bottleneck. The verification of the design behavior presents a further challenge due to the 'black-box' nature of FPGAs. To tackle these design challenges, we propose a novel approach to implement FPGA-based shifters. The proposed design alleviates the I/O bottleneck while significantly reducing the logic resources required. This is achieved with a minimal increase in the design delay. …
Postpartum Sleep Disturbance And Psychomotor Vigilance Performance, Salvatore Insana
Postpartum Sleep Disturbance And Psychomotor Vigilance Performance, Salvatore Insana
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Postpartum women have high rates of sleep disturbance and commonly suffer from many of the effects of disturbed sleep, though attentional state has not been studied extensively in this population. This study assessed sleep and attentional state psychomotor performance in postpartum women to develop a better understanding of how sleep disturbance --specifically sleep fragmentation and partial sleep deprivation-- is associated with attentional state psychomotor performance. Participants were a sample of 24 postpartum mothers from a larger study. Mothers were 29.96 (SD = 7.94) years old, had a mean income of {dollar}65,808 (SD = {dollar}41,398), and had 17.04 (SD = 2.53) …

Surficial Mapping And Kinematic Modeling Of The St. Clair Thrust Fault, Monroe County, West Virginia, Jason M. Sturms
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Near the Allegheny Structural boundary between the Appalachian Plateau and the Valley and Ridge Province of the West Virginian Appalachians lie four major thrust faults: the Pulaski, Saltville, Narrows, and the St. Clair all of which are associated with the Alleghenian Orogeny. Of these major thrusts, the St. Clair thrust fault represents the boundary of the Allegheny Structural Front and is one of the few major thrust faults that are exposed at the surface in the Appalachians of West Virginia.;The St. Clair thrust fault represents an example of fault-propagation folding. Within fault-propagation folding, trishear deformation and fault-bend folding can be …

Cycles In Graph Theory And Matroids, Ju Zhou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A circuit is a connected 2-regular graph. A cycle is a graph such that the degree of each vertex is even. A graph G is Hamiltonian if it has a spanning circuit, and Hamiltonian-connected if for every pair of distinct vertices u, v ∈ V( G), G has a spanning (u, v)-path. A graph G is s-Hamiltonian if for any S ⊆ V (G) of order at most s, G -- S has a Hamiltonian-circuit, and s-Hamiltonian connected if for any S ⊆ V( G) of order at most s, G -- S is Hamiltonian-connected. In this dissertation, we investigated …

Many students have poor attitudes toward mathematics. This mixed methods study investigates factors that affect college students' attitudes toward mathematics as well as what may be done to reverse or prevent poor student attitudes in the future. Ninety-nine college algebra students completed a retrospective quantitative survey in order to amass numerical data and guide interview choices. Twenty-three of the ninety-nine students were interviewed to gain in-depth knowledge of what factors affect their attitude as well as suggestions on improving these attitudes.;From this study, student attitudes are most affected by four external factors: the teacher, teaching style, classroom environment, and assessments …
Predicting The Performance Characteristics Of Assembled Rollover Protective Structure Designs For Tractors, James R. Harris
Predicting The Performance Characteristics Of Assembled Rollover Protective Structure Designs For Tractors, James R. Harris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tractor overturn fatalities are the single leading cause of agricultural fatalities in the United States. Approximately 100 people die each year as the result of a tractor overturn. Effective engineering controls to mitigate injury and prevent death from tractor overturns are available in the form of rollover protective structures (ROPS) and seatbelts. However, approximately 50% of all tractors in the United States are without ROPS. Cost of ROPS is frequently cited as a reason why tractor owners do not have ROPS installed. Cost-effective ROPS (CROPS) have been developed with the intent to lower the cost of retro-fitting a tractor with …
Involvement Of Adenosine A1 Receptors In Systemic Inflammation And Altered Vascular Reactivity In Allergic Mice, Dovenia S. Ponnoth
Involvement Of Adenosine A1 Receptors In Systemic Inflammation And Altered Vascular Reactivity In Allergic Mice, Dovenia S. Ponnoth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Epidemiological studies have established that people who have lung diseases such as asthma and COPD are likely to develop adverse cardiovascular events. While the reason for this has not been elucidated, it is believed that inflammation could be the key component linking the two conditions. Adenosine, an endogenous purine nucleoside, has been strongly implicated in asthma pathophysiology and also has potent effects on the cardiovascular system. This work was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the relationship between asthma and its cardiovascular effects, and more specifically the possible role adenosine plays under these conditions.;We hypothesize that asthmatic lung inflammation …
Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer
Insights From The Field: Perceptions Of In-Home Interventionists Working In Appalachian Maryland., Benjamin T. Brauer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As No Child Left Behind continues to impact public K-12 education, educators continue to seek new ways in which to reach out to at-risk students. Many school administrators and school interventionists are using in-home interventions to assist families in facilitating their child’s success. These interventions range from simply bringing instructional materials to the home of a frequently absent student, to facilitating the delivery of mental health services in the home. While school officials are taking on additional roles and responsibilities to try and meet the growing expectations placed on the public K-12 educational system, many feel that they are doing …
A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Autocorrelation results in too many out-of-control false alarms when traditional T2 control charts are used in practice. In this research, a vector autoregressive (VAR) based T 2 control chart is built to improve the effectiveness of the traditional T2 control charts when variables are autocorrelated and cross-correlated. Datasets generated by a SAS program are used to test the performance of the proposed method. Computational results showed that the proposed method outperforms the ARIMA based residual T2 control chart with respect to identification accuracy and average run length. Also, the results showed that the proposed method with principal components analysis is …
Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles
Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Job satisfaction is considered to be the most important and frequently examined outcome variable in congruence research. The assumption that congruence results in job satisfaction is fundamental to Holland's theory; however, the empirical evidence predominantly indicates that the congruence - job satisfaction correlation is, at best, equivocal. There is a movement within vocational psychology that the congruence construct is “dead†as a viable theoretical concept and that the field should abandon Holland's theory. This idea does not exist without significant argument, however. It has been recognized widely that congruence has not fared better in the empirical research literature because methodological …

The Effects Of Standards -Based Curriculum Modeling On Preservice Elementary Teachers' Mathematical Content Knowledge, Beliefs, And Attitudes., David I. Kennedy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation study the researcher modeled NCTM-standards-based teaching while using different instructional materials in two sections of a college mathematics content course for preservice elementary teachers. One section (n = 29) used a typical college text while the other (n = 30) used innovative middle-school materials. After one semester, participants in both class sections showed significant gains in their mathematics content knowledge, the level of their standards-based beliefs about mathematics, and their attitudes toward mathematics. Mathematics-content gains were greater in the college-text group. Interviews were also conducted. Results suggest that both college texts and innovative middle-school materials can serve …
Experimentalism, Relativity And Quantum Mechanics At A Land Grant Institution: West Virginia University, 1920-1960., Eric S. Wright
Experimentalism, Relativity And Quantum Mechanics At A Land Grant Institution: West Virginia University, 1920-1960., Eric S. Wright
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis details the response of a land-grant university to the development of quantum mechanics and relativity across a forty-year period. Concurrently with this, it traces the pattern of normal research at the university to show how the development of new physical theories impacted a representative physics department. The Physics department at West Virginia University at first paid little attention to relativity then after 1924 rejected its theoretical underpinnings. Wholesale acceptance of the theory did not occur until after the replacement of the pre-World War II generation of physicists. Quantum mechanics did not make significant inroads at West Virginia University …

Safety Externalities Of Suvs On Passenger Cars: An Analysis Of The Peltzman Effect Using Fars Data., Maria-Paulina Diosdado-De-La-Pena
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the last decade, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have become a considerable percentage of the US vehicular fleet, giving rise to several highway safety issues such as: vehicular incompatibility, rollover propensity and offsetting driver behavior. While greater mass, stiffness and dimensions of SUVs relative to passenger cars, are safety advantages of SUVs, they may encourage SUV drivers to engage in a trade off between this new level of safety and risk taking behavior, named Peltzman Effect. In this research a model developed by Levitt and Poter (2001) for drinking drivers is applied to assessing the Peltzman Effect of SUVs and …
Reinforcement Learning-Based Control Design For Load Frequency Control, Sara Eftekharnejad
Reinforcement Learning-Based Control Design For Load Frequency Control, Sara Eftekharnejad
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Energy balance in electric power systems is continuously disrupted by constant demand changes due to customers' switching in and out, or loss of generating units. Load frequency control (LFC) is very essential for interconnected power systems in order to maintain the energy balance which is assessed through the Area Control Error, a signal that is made up of deviations from their nominal values of the system frequency and power area interchanges. Each balancing authority is responsible for its own energy balance in accordance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards.;This thesis presents a novel approach to the LFC problem. …

The objective of this research was to investigate the skeletal muscle response to a chronic administration of stretch-shortening cycles (SSCs) in young and old rats. Dorsiflexor muscles of old and young rats were exposed 3 times per week for 4.5 weeks to a protocol of 80 maximal stretch-shortening cycles per exposure in vivo. Skeletal muscle response was characterized by force and work parameters of the stretch-shortening contraction at each exposure interval. The performance of the young and old groups was not statistically different at the start of the exposure, but increased significantly by 25%-30% in the young animals and decreased …
Focal Adhesion Kinase Mediates Caveolin-1 Expression During Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition: A Novel Pathway Regulating Aspects Of Cell Motility In Cancer., Kelly M. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Caveolin-1, the protein coat of caveolae membrane invaginations, was originally hypothesized to function solely as a tumor suppressor in human cancers. However, since the early 1990s, caveolin-1 has been found to be up-regulated in a number of metastatic cancers. This expression has been shown to correlate with disease progression and decreases in overall patient survival in some tumor types. Further, caveolin-1 expression is elevated in multi-drug resistant cancer cells and caveolae are thought to participate in the efflux pathway to pump drugs out of these tumor cells. The overall goal of these studies was to examine changes in and regulation …
Urban Tree Phenology: A Comparative Study Between New York City And Ithaca, New York., Ishwar Dhami
Urban Tree Phenology: A Comparative Study Between New York City And Ithaca, New York., Ishwar Dhami
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studies on phenology have demonstrated that "Global warming" effect is influencing vegetation phenological processes. In order to accurately predict how climate warming affects vegetation phenology, a clear understanding of vegetation phenology and its relationship to temperature is needed. Although finding the effects of global warming on phenology across larger areas is difficult, heat island phenomena associated with urbanized area presents a unique place to investigate the local effect of warming on phenology. Thus, this study looked at the response of trees to increasing temperatures by comparing the phenological patterns of trees in a highly urbanized New York City (NYC) and …
Instructors And Their Students: The Relationship Between Out -Of -Class Communication, Student Communication Motives, Student Motivation, And Instructor Job Satisfaction And Motivation., Jennifer L. Knapp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The bulk of instructional communication research is concerned with the impact of instructors on students, leaving very few studies that focus on the affects of students on instructors. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to identify the impact students have on instructor out-of-class communication (OCC), job satisfaction, and motivation. Student relational, functional, participatory, excuse-making and sycophancy motives for communicating, along with perceived student motivation were examined in order to learn more about the influence of students on instructors. Participants (college instructors, N = 268) completed an online questionnaire about their OCC, job satisfaction, and motivation, as well as perceived …
The β-Tubulin Gene As A Means To Discriminate Species And Verify Evolutionary Patterns Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi., Zola Msiska
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associating with 80% of vascular plant families increase uptake of nutrients and water in plants, help to stabilize soil aggregates and improve soil aeration, water percolation and carbon storage. Phylogeny of AMF based on rDNA sequences is in conflict with morphology-based phylogeny. The aim of the present study was to examine a protein encoding gene, β-tubulin, in order to test conclusions drawn from rDNA sequences and morphological data. Inverse-PCR was used to amplify full-length β-tubulin genes of Gigaspora gigantea and Glomus clarum. The gene in both species is organized into five exons and four introns encoding …

Response Rate Or Number Of Repetitions: Which Aspect Of Drill And Practice Testing Most Contributes To Paired-Associate Learning., Scott Davis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Precision teaching methods began in the 1960s and have grown in utility and popularity over the last four decades (Downer, 2007). The methods are used to teach across multiple contents with an emphasis in achieving fluency as opposed to mere accuracy. Speed drills, frequently used to determine the learner's current level of fluency, were found to have a significant treatment effect on learning (McGreevy, 1978; Scott, Wolking, Stoutimore, & Harris, 1990; White & Haring, 1976). The purpose of this study is to isolate and measure the treatment effect of two key aspects of the speed drill and practice component of …
Analytical Solution To The Wave Equation With Discrete Pressure Sources: A Model For The Rijke Tube, Eduardo G. Perez
Analytical Solution To The Wave Equation With Discrete Pressure Sources: A Model For The Rijke Tube, Eduardo G. Perez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite of having been studied for several decades the phenomena of combustion instabilities are not well understood. Pressure waves due to the combustion instabilities can become violent being detrimental for both the performance and combustor life. A good prediction of the pressure distribution inside the combustor is important in order to prevent theoccurrence of this phenomenon. In this work a technique for solving the wave equation with discrete sources (or sinks) using the Green's functions was developed. One and two-dimensional approaches for cylindrical and Cartesian coordinates withconstant speed of sound were solved. Also the case of one-dimensional axially varying temperature …

Kepler's Method: The Conjoining Of Theoretical And Empirical Science., Marc M. Mezzina
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Johannes Kepler was a mathematician that changed the way that science was conceived and practiced in the early seventeenth century. Kepler’s method of scientific inquiry consisted of the joining of the theoretical aspects of astronomy with the solid empirical proof provided by observations. Kepler’s method would lead him to the discovery of his three laws of planetary motion, as well as change the fundamental questions asked by the subject of astronomy. This is a look in the method employed by Kepler throughout his most significant scientific works.

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With many more young adult voters identifying themselves as independent voters or members of a third party, it is hard to believe third party candidates have not found more significant or lasting success in the U.S. politics. To investigate this phenomenon, Muted Group Theory is presented as one explanation and evidence was sought to determine if third party supporters are a muted group in U.S. politics. Participants included young adult voters from a large Mid-Atlantic university who responded to several statements about third parties and identified their political affiliation. Differences were expected to exist among the different political groups, yet …

The Felt Needs Of Adult Learners In Today's College Environment: The Growing Significance Of Non-Traditional Students., Antoinette Hando
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A survey was used to identify the felt needs of non-traditional students. The first section identified non-traditional students and their overall demographics. In the needs analysis three major factors were found: flexibility of program requirements, time flexibility and the ability to understand the needs of non-traditional students were identified. These correlated with the literature review done on non-traditional learners. The last section dealt with their feelings concerning technology. It also was found to be comparable to the literature review, which talked about demographics, felt needs, and use of technology. Findings indicated that these nontraditional students felt that new technology was …
Building Better Software: The Applicability Of A Professional Tool For Automating Quality Assessment And Fault Detection., Justin S. Di Stefano
Building Better Software: The Applicability Of A Professional Tool For Automating Quality Assessment And Fault Detection., Justin S. Di Stefano
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The size of software applications is growing. It is no longer possible to achieve full coverage in pre-release testing, and in many cases it is not even possible to provide significant partial coverage. Automatic methods such as formal modeling are a possible solution, but they are far too expensive to apply to every piece of developed code. Static code defect detectors provide a solid and dependable means for selecting high risk sections of code for more expensive review, such as formal modeling or manual inspection. Historically, static code defect detectors have been vilified in academic and industrial domains on the …

The Automated Dental Identification System (ADIS) can be used by law enforcement agencies to locate missing persons using databases of dental x-rays of human remains and dental scans of missing or unidentified persons. ADIS provides …
Solutions For 2-Dimensional Stabilized Kuramoto -Sivashinsky System, Maomao Cai
Solutions For 2-Dimensional Stabilized Kuramoto -Sivashinsky System, Maomao Cai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We study a stabilized Kuramoto-Sivanshinsky system in two-dimensional space. A model consists of a mixed Kuramoto-Sivanshinsky-Korteweg-de Vires equation, linearly coupled to an extra linear dissipative equation. The model is proposed to describe the surface waves on multi-layered liquid films. In this work, we investigate the stability of the solution to this system by establishing a priori energy estimate for the linearized problem of this non-linear system. We use linear iteration to prove the local existence of the solution to this system. Based on a weak global priori energy estimate, we further prove the global existence and uniqueness of classical solution …
