Hand Transmitted Vibration In A Simulated Industrial Task: A Psychophysical Evaluation., Sergio Augusto Caporali Filho
Hand Transmitted Vibration In A Simulated Industrial Task: A Psychophysical Evaluation., Sergio Augusto Caporali Filho
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Continued occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) has been related to a series of disorders, which have been collectively defined as the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Based on existing knowledge, the International Standard Organization has developed a standard for the measurement, evaluation and assessment of HTV, which documents the measurement and reporting methodology, the dose-response relationship, and the weighing filter for the assessment of HTV. Some researchers have emphasized the need for the development of improved weighing functions and dose-response relationships, for which it is vital to undertake further systematic investigations in order to enhance our understanding of HAVS, …
Landscaping The Lehigh: The Creation Of A Middle Industrial Landscape In Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania., Augustine Nigro
Landscaping The Lehigh: The Creation Of A Middle Industrial Landscape In Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania., Augustine Nigro
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Located sixty miles above Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley follows the seventy-mile path of the Lehigh River as it descends from the Pocono Mountains south through the Blue Mountains into the rich agricultural lands of the Appalachian Great Valley. With anthracite deposits in its northern reaches, rich agricultural lands in its middle section, and commercial connections to Philadelphia at its mouth, nineteenth-century industrialists saw the river as a potential transportation route. From 1817 to 1829, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company developed a system of slack water navigation along the river. With the opening of the channel in 1829, extractive industries …
Stereotypes, Intolerance, And Policy Supports For Women, Minorities, And Gays: The Diversity Course Impact On Students Pursuing Higher Education In The Sreb States., Christine J. Brehm
Stereotypes, Intolerance, And Policy Supports For Women, Minorities, And Gays: The Diversity Course Impact On Students Pursuing Higher Education In The Sreb States., Christine J. Brehm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Problematic stereotyping of women, minorities, and gays in the United States may become justification for prejudicial attitudes that lead to political intolerance toward members of these marginalized groups. While images of others and a sense of political tolerance develop through childhood and preadult socialization, education beyond high school can have a significant impact on one's reliance on stereotypes when considering the granting or withholding of basic civil rights from marginalized members of society, and may also affect the position one takes towards policies created to benefit women, minorities, and gays. During the fall semester of 2000, an investigation of these …
Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke
Dutch Women In New Netherland And New York In The Seventeenth Century, Michael Eugene Gherke
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The European settlers who emigrated to America in the seventeenth century were decidedly patriarchal. Nevertheless, significant cultural differences in expressions of patriarchy among them existed. Specifically, the Dutch of New Netherland defined the gendered roles of women differently than did other European cultures. More than deputy-husbands, but less than full partner, seventeenth-century Dutch women in New Netherland were integral to the survival and promotion of their families' interests and preservation of the colony. English expropriation of New Netherland in 1664 and permanent acquisition in 1674 inaugurate a process of patriarchal acculturation that over time submerged the roles of Dutch women. …
The Institutional Production Of Literary Value: Studies Of African-American Popular Music Lyrics And The Avant-Garde., Carl Silvio
The Institutional Production Of Literary Value: Studies Of African-American Popular Music Lyrics And The Avant-Garde., Carl Silvio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent decades have witnessed series of debates over the nature of the texts studied by literary studies. Some argue that the literary text is first and foremost defined by its aesthetic value, while others claim that the discipline should regard its object as a social document which reveals information about the society that produced it and exerts an ideological effect upon its cultural context. These debates, between what are usually termed “traditional†and “cultural studies†approaches to literature reveal a central contradiction that has divided the discourse of aesthetic value since its formulation in the Eighteenth century. The question of …
Matewan Before The Massacre: Politics, Coal, And The Roots Of Conflict In Mingo County, 1793-1920, Rebecca J. Bailey
Matewan Before The Massacre: Politics, Coal, And The Roots Of Conflict In Mingo County, 1793-1920, Rebecca J. Bailey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
On May 19, 1920, gunshots rang through the streets of Matewan, West Virginia, in an event soon known as the “Matewan Massacre.” Most historians of West Virginia and Appalachia see this event as the beginning of a long series of events known as the second mine wars. This dissertation argues that this event was, rather, the culmination of an even longer series of events that unfolded in Mingo County, dating back at least to the Civil War, and setting the stage for the second mine war. Equally important, while it is outside the scope of this dissertation, the conflicts in …

Structured interviews were conducted and taped of twenty faculty members at the study institution, detailing the above factors. An overall …
The Presbyterian Church Of East Africa: An Account Of Its Gospel Missionary Society Origins, 1895-1946., Evanson Ndungu Wamagatta
The Presbyterian Church Of East Africa: An Account Of Its Gospel Missionary Society Origins, 1895-1946., Evanson Ndungu Wamagatta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation traces the Gospel Missionary Society origins of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The church was established when the Gospel missionary Society (GMS) from the United States of America (USA) and the Church of Scotland Mission (CSM) from Scotland merged their work in 1946. Consequently, the focus of this study is the work of the GMS in Kenya from when it was inaugurated in 1895 to the time of the merger in 1946. As shown in this dissertation, the GMS initially had no intention of establishing its work and then hand it over to the CSM as …

The Role Of Lois Marie Gibbs In The Love Canal Crisis And Its Effect On Federal "Superfund" Legislation, 1973-1981., Daniel Victor Kahler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the spring of 1978, a young homemaker named Lois Marie Gibbs discovered that her child was attending an elementary school built on top of a 20,000 ton, toxic chemical dump in Niagara Falls, New York. Out of desperation, she organized her neighbors into the Love Canal Homeowners Association and struggled more than two years for relocation. Opposing the group’s efforts were the chemical manufacturer, Hooker Chemical Corporation, and local, state, and federal government officials who insisted that the leaking toxic chemicals, including dioxin the most toxic chemical known to man, was not the cause of high rates of birth …
Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood
Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Culture is a pervasive concept that is not easily encompassed in any one definition. Culture within an organization is both process and product. It is both a dynamic agent of influence within the temporal and spatial context of organizational life and an object of study approached from the actor's point of view and thickly described. My general interest is in the cultural context of colleges, and more specifically in the part that culture has played in the formation and transformation of the mission and role of Berea College as it has sought to educate marginalized people for nearly 150 years. …

The responses of the British Colonial Office, the colonial state, African, European and Asian communities are also analyzed. The relationship between disease …
Expressive Endeavors Utilizing Advanced And Emerging Technical Means., Paul Louis Siciliano
Expressive Endeavors Utilizing Advanced And Emerging Technical Means., Paul Louis Siciliano
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Throughout most of known human existence the processes, materials and tools of production were available to individuals involved in both utilitarian and expressive work. Since the Renaissance, however, the exponential growth and sophistication of technology has made it impossible for the majority of artists to gain access to many potential tools for expression. Despite the complexity of myriad technical means, some individuals have been successful in utilizing advanced technologies for expressive purposes. The purpose of this study was to examine the methods these individuals employed to access and apply sophisticated technologies for expressive production. A qualitative research methodology consisting of …
A Historical Study Of Educational Reform Policy In Morocco., Abdellah Benahnia
A Historical Study Of Educational Reform Policy In Morocco., Abdellah Benahnia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Though information about literacy development in Morocco can be often found in professional publications, little has been done in regard to the impact of the socio-cultural, economic, and political variables on the development of educational policy in that country. This study has historically examined the educational reform policy in the independent Kingdom of Morocco in order to see how the above variables have affected the implementation of most major policies that had taken place. It also examined the role of the indigenous Islamic traditional type of education; the role of Salafiyya movement in creating a unique type of nationalism; and …

This is a study of the impact of the evangelistic approach to western education by the Church of God Mission of Anderson, Indiana, U.S.A. on the Luyia of Western Kenya. It describes the types of schools initiated, their strengths and weaknesses, as a result of this missionary endeavor. The focus of this study also reveals new insights as to the social, religious and political impact of mid-western evangelism and education on the Luyia. Through the use of extensive oral interviews and questionnaires from Western Kenya, this study is able to provide a unique African voice in the assessment of the …

Historical Study--West Virginia Board Of Examiners For Registered Professional Nurses (1950-1987): Impact On Standards Of Nursing Education In West Virginia., Giovanna Lucia Morton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem investigated in this research was an historical study of the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses and its impact upon standards of nursing education in West Virginia between 1950-1987. The study followed the historiography methodological approach and it was based upon Kurt Lewin's theoretical constructs of change: Stage 1: Unfreezing; Stage 2: Changing or Implementation (Referred to in this study as "Transition" and "Expansion"); Stage 3: Refreezing. The factors considered to affect change were limited to selected socioeconomic, professional, and legal factors. This study documented the impact of the Board, as influenced by these four …
The American Colonization Society And The Formation Of Political, Economic And Religious Institutions In Liberia, 1822-1900., Amos Jones Beyan
The American Colonization Society And The Formation Of Political, Economic And Religious Institutions In Liberia, 1822-1900., Amos Jones Beyan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study traces the historical roots of Liberia's political, economic, and social institutions. It intends to apply a new historical perspective to the West African nation's history, and by identifying some of its critical problems, to provide an empirical guideline for the present and future generations of that country. The study's main theme is that Liberia's political, economic, and religious institutions, though shaped by other factors as well, were largely extensions of similar institutional values inherent in the American Colonization Society (ACS). To examine this proposition, the first two chapters of the study are addressed to the social backgrounds of …
The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie
The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most musical instruments of Western European culture have been studied and defined; however, no systematic study has yet been made for the instrument commonly known as the rebec (or rebeck). General reference sources and musicological studies which mention the rebec often provide discrepant, vague, and erroneous information. The current interest in the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music and the reproduction of instruments upon which this music might have been played has created a need, among performers and instrument makers, for specific, primary source information concerning the rebec. The use of the rebec in Western Europe can be documented through …
Harold Nicolson And Alfred Duff Cooper: The Historian As Politician In The Age Of Appeasement, 1935-1939., John Beecher Shorrock
Harold Nicolson And Alfred Duff Cooper: The Historian As Politician In The Age Of Appeasement, 1935-1939., John Beecher Shorrock
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several months after the signing of the armistice ending the First World War, a policy was adopted in Great Britain which aimed at the pacification of Europe. It was not new or altruistic. It was a policy grounded in the legitimate assumption that a peaceful reconciliation of differences among nations would prevent future generations from falling into a holocaust similar to that which had convulsed Europe between 1912* and 1918. It was a noble policy; mention of its name did not provoke illusions of cowardice, treachery, or betrayal. It was called appeasement,
