Dynamics Of Defiance: Government Power And Rural Resistance In The Arkansas Ozarks, J. Blake Perkins
Dynamics Of Defiance: Government Power And Rural Resistance In The Arkansas Ozarks, J. Blake Perkins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation explores the dynamics of rural resistance against government interventions in the Ozark uplands of Arkansas during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It employs microhistorical analysis to delve deep into the experiences and attitudes of rural folks as they encountered and interacted with different arms of government authority during this long period of change and transition for rural America. The findings question and complicate long-held assumptions about an "exceptional" rural hill culture that supposedly eluded change and remained isolated from mainstream American developments since the pioneer settlers of the Early Republic. In particular, this work's collection of case …
Trauma, Memory And Victimhood: Estonia And The Holocaust, 1998-2012, Paul Oliver Stocker
Trauma, Memory And Victimhood: Estonia And The Holocaust, 1998-2012, Paul Oliver Stocker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Memory of the traumatic Soviet past has both dominated the politics of history in Estonia and been a key determining factor in building a national post-Soviet European identity. As a result, the Holocaust in Estonia has played a less substantial role in both scholarship, and public debate, specifically regarding the nature of local participation in the elimination of Jewish life in Estonia. The subject was catapulted onto the national political agenda in alignment with integration to both NATO and the EU, which clearly viewed Estonia's coming to terms with the event as a matter of importance upon its arrival into …
Formulation And Evaluation Of A Novel Irrigant For The Disinfection Of Root Canals Using A Candida Albicans Biofilm Model, Dustin S. Reynolds
Formulation And Evaluation Of A Novel Irrigant For The Disinfection Of Root Canals Using A Candida Albicans Biofilm Model, Dustin S. Reynolds
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An important goal of root canal therapy is elimination of microorganisms which are usually organized into a biofilm phenotype. Irrigants play an indispensable role in areas inaccessible to mechanical instrumentation. In this study, a novel endodontic irrigant was formulated composed of a penetrating solvent, 70% Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with a 1:1 molar ratio of an antibiotic (Clindamycin HCl) and antifungal agent (Nystatin). Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) stability tests were conducted to prove the mixture was chemically stable. This study compared different concentrations of the novel irrigant to 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) using a C. albicans biofilm model. Furthermore, it …
A Strategic Study And Economics Of Optimum Well Design For The Utica Shale, Linda N. Anumele
A Strategic Study And Economics Of Optimum Well Design For The Utica Shale, Linda N. Anumele
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research seeks to venture into optimal well and fracture design via reservoir modeling, simulation and economic analysis in an attempt to discover, analyze, interpret and present the best ways of maximizing hydrocarbon (natural gas) production from the Utica shale which is a relatively new reservoir. Furthermore, comparison of natural gas production in deep and thick Utica shale formation sections is studied for various well and facture designs in conjunction with stimulated reservoir volume analysis and economic analysis in order to achieve an optimal design. The objective of this study is to compare and contrast the gas production from various …
An Environmental History Of Malawi's 'Island In The Sky': The Mulanje Cedar And Imperial Forestry In British Nyasaland, 1890-1964., Kathleen J. Fichtel
An Environmental History Of Malawi's 'Island In The Sky': The Mulanje Cedar And Imperial Forestry In British Nyasaland, 1890-1964., Kathleen J. Fichtel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Mulanje cedar is a unique and endangered tree that is found only within the confines of the Mt. Mulanje Forest Reserve in southeastern Malawi. This dissertation examines the relationship between scientific forestry as introduced by British experts and the role and status of the endangered cedar. The British, like forest experts and other natural scientists today, believed the tree to be in danger of imminent demise. Economic expediency made it so that the tree was harvested by colonial officials from the beginning though they attempted to replace what they had taken. This did not work. Throughout the past century, …
Effects Of Stereotype Threat On Adolescents' Math And Visual-Spatial Performance., Lisa M. Didonato
Effects Of Stereotype Threat On Adolescents' Math And Visual-Spatial Performance., Lisa M. Didonato
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent research suggests that the gender gap in math performance is closing (Else-Quest, Hyde, & Linn, 2010; Hyde, Lindberg, Linn, Ellis, & Williams, 2008). However, negative stereotypes about girls’ math abilities are still widely held (Bhanot & Jovanovic, 2005; Bleeker & Jacobs, 2004). The gender gap in visual-spatial skills, or the ability to reason about and manipulate mental pictures, still exists in that boys outperform girls on visual-spatial tasks. The current study drew from literature on stereotype threat (i.e., the risk of confirming negative stereotypes about a specific group; Steele, 1997) to investigate the impact of negative math stereotypes on …
Disaster Preparations And Relief: The Partnership Between The American National Red Cross And Amateur Radio, Bayley B. Brown
Disaster Preparations And Relief: The Partnership Between The American National Red Cross And Amateur Radio, Bayley B. Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this master's thesis is to evaluate the current state of the partnership between the American National Red Cross chapters and Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) groups. The alliance between these organizations has historically been outlined by national representatives, the most recent being the 2010 Memorandum of Understanding between the American National Red Cross and ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. This partnership was assessed through a nationwide survey of American National Red Cross chapter representatives. Findings suggest that most Red Cross chapters have current partnerships with their local ARES group, and collaboration occurs primarily for disaster …
African Resistance During The First World War., Charles E. Steinmetz
African Resistance During The First World War., Charles E. Steinmetz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines British responses to African resistance in three specific locations within the East Africa Protectorate both before and during the First World War. Two specific questions are addressed. First, what kind of African resistance did the British colonial authorities face prior to the outbreak of the First World War and how were these resistance movements handled? The second question is what impact did the First World War have upon British policy in dealing with African resistance during the war itself? As case studies for British policy relating to the handling of African resistance before the start of the …
Keeping It Real: A Historical Look At Reality Tv, Jessica Roberts
Keeping It Real: A Historical Look At Reality Tv, Jessica Roberts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the summer of 2000 CBS launched a wilderness and competition reality show called "Survivor." The show became a monster hit with more than fifty million viewers watching the finale, ratings only second to Super Bowl. That summer and that show forever changed many aspects of the television industry. Reality TV had been around for years, but with "Survivor" it began a period of lightening fast development, growth, and influence. During the past decade, many different reality shows have emerged and this research categorizes those shows into four sub-genres that it is argued all reality shows during this time could …
From Peasant To Pariah: Changing English Perceptions Of The Irish From The 1820s Through The 1860s, Traci J. Scully
From Peasant To Pariah: Changing English Perceptions Of The Irish From The 1820s Through The 1860s, Traci J. Scully
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While the historiography of English perceptions of the Irish in the later period of the Victorian era is extensive, there is a dearth of research in tracing the origins of these perceptions. The connection between England and Ireland dates back centuries, and the relationship was neutral at best and extremely violent at worst. Historians such as L. Perry Curtis have analyzed the mass media of these later decades to argue that the English saw their neighbors as subhuman creatures in the racial hierarchy.;However, this image did not emerge from a single event, but rather evolved over the tumultuous earlier decades …
In Sickness And In Health, In Good Times And In Bad: A Comparative Analysis Of The Ideologies Governing Health Care Reform In Canada And The United States, 1962--1974, Michael A. Todt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explores the ideology of health care reform in Canada and the United States from 1962 to 1974. During that time, Canada enacted Medicare, which provided a universal physician services program designed by the provinces and supported financially by the federal government. Rejecting a private-sector approach and Quebec's desire for complete autonomy in the program design, the joint federal-provincial program supported the Canadian values of government responsibility for health care (paternal statism) and the belief that Canadians have a responsibility to care for each other (collectivism).;From 1970 to 1974, the U.S. Congress failed to enact any national health insurance …
Rethinking Modes Of Political Influence: Catherine De' Medici And Her Female Political Network, Kelly A. Benner
Rethinking Modes Of Political Influence: Catherine De' Medici And Her Female Political Network, Kelly A. Benner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Though previous studies on the political career of Catherine de' Medici have been male-centric, focusing primarily on Catherine's relationships with her sons and male noblemen, it is the contention of this thesis that Catherine amassed a female-based political network during her tenure as Queen mother. Comprised of both her female relatives and the noblewomen that surrounded her at court, Catherine used this system of females to manipulate both domestic and foreign politics. The first chapter of this thesis will focus on Catherine's political purpose for her eldest and youngest daughters, Elisabeth de Valois (consort of Philip II of Spain) and …
Engaging The Virtual Landscape: Toward An Experiential Approach To Exploring Place Through A Spatial Experience Engine, Susan J. Bergeron

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other geospatial technologies in historical inquiry and the humanities has led to a number of projects that are exploring digital representations of past landscapes and places as platforms for synthesizing and representing historical and geographic information. Recent advancements in geovisualization, immersive environments, and virtual reality offer the opportunity to generate digital representations of cultural and physical landscapes, and embed those virtual landscapes with information and knowledge from multiple GIS sources. The development of these technologies and their application to historical research has opened up new opportunities to synthesize historical records from disparate …
The Politics And Policy Of Small City Downtown Development, Thomas K. Bias
The Politics And Policy Of Small City Downtown Development, Thomas K. Bias
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many theories on successful small city development and revitalization efforts hinge on three major areas; Policies and programs, quality of life, and strong coalitions between government, non-profit groups, local business, and residents. This dissertation examines the affects that government policies and programs (e.g., Main Street programs, zoning laws, etc.) have on the success of small city development and revitalization efforts. Using original survey data from a sample of key small city policy makers across the United States, this dissertation explores how perceptions of small city downtowns are influenced by government efforts to improve them. Regression analysis is employed to determine …

One-Room Schools And Their Role In The Development Of The Appalachian Hills Of West Virginia: 1863--1940s, James Seth Caudill
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One-room schools provided the educational settings for the majority of West Virginians until well into the twentieth century. The distribution of the population throughout the rural, rolling, and mountainous terrain resulted in the location of schools within walking distance for most students. The school population consisted of students of various ages and different grades contained in one room. Teachers required diverse skills, in order to perform as academic instructor, nurse, custodian, and entertainment leader at recess. The rural schools gave students in these communities an opportunity to achieve an education, offering both academics and life lessons. The thesis will examine …

Afro-Zulians In The Trans-Atlantic World: A Case Study Of Jean De Chourio And The Black Venezuelans Of The Sur Del Lago Maracaibo (1722--1811), Raymond Andrew Keller Ii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation addresses the history of a small community of the African Diaspora mostly overlooked: the Afro-Zulians as the descendants of the first blacks brought over to the Sur del Lago Maracaibo region in Venezuela by the Basque-French slave trader Jean de Chourio in 1722. The significance of this group in the context of colonial Venezuela from the period of 1722-1811, the year of Venezuelan independence, is highlighted. This dissertation examines perceptions that the Afro-Zulian community has of itself, as well as the perceptions that others have of it both within and outside of Venezuela. The theoretical idea central to …
Soldiers And Stereotypes: Mountaineers, Cultural Identity, And World War Ii, C. Belmont Keeney
Soldiers And Stereotypes: Mountaineers, Cultural Identity, And World War Ii, C. Belmont Keeney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To what extent are Appalachian stereotypes true and how much is pure fabrication? This study seeks to answer this question by examining the experiences of West Virginia soldiers during World War II. Appalachian hillbillies, believed to be culturally backward, uncivilized, isolated, and prone to violence, were often sent straight to the infantry because it was believed that their wild mountain heritage made them inherently better fighters. Using interviews, letters, and a collection of over 1,200 firsthand written accounts of Appalachian veterans collected by West Virginia University in 1946, this study traces the evolution of the cultural and individual identities of …
The Riotous Presence In American Literature And Culture, Rebecca Skidmore Biggio
The Riotous Presence In American Literature And Culture, Rebecca Skidmore Biggio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project seeks a comprehensive understanding of riot as an operating principle in American history and culture---a principle variously revealed in, explored, or obscured by literature produced by popular and political novelists at the turn of the twentieth century. In defining riot as a presence, I identify as central to US history a haunting incoherence between fundamental cherished ideals of representative government and the use of violence or threats of violence to assert the privilege of one group through the subjugation of another.;Because representations influence the way we characterize historical events both prospectively and retrospectively, I conduct my investigation through …

The View From The Border: A Study Of Gender And Women's Rights In West Virginia During The Age Of Emancipation., Allison Fredette
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
On June 20, 1863, the Wheeling Intelligencer proclaimed, “This day ushers into being the new State of West Virginia, and adds the thirty fifth star to the constellation of the American Union. To-day is the beginning of a new order of things with us here. The old Government goes out and the new one comes in.”1 With their final break from the eastern Virginia elite, West Virginians accepted a new set of laws to govern the new state and its citizens. These laws reflected West Virginia’s status as a border state, adapting from the Virginia code as well as a …

The Emerging Geographies Of Work And Identity: Exploring Alternative Employment Strategies And Work Subjectivities Of Women With Multiple Sclerosis (Ms)., Kimberly Lynne Cordingly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system producing a varied range of symptoms affecting physical, cognitive, and sensory functioning. The variability and unpredictability of impairments, their duration and intensity on a day to day basis, and ongoing health impacts present formidable challenges to securing and maintaining employment. Research suggests, despite having recent and extensive work histories, as many as 70-80 percent of individuals with MS are unemployed after diagnosis. For women with MS, the challenge of negotiating paid and non-paid work responsibilities often leads to difficult choices about how to navigate these changing lifeworlds. For …

The State, Ecology, And Society In Western Kenya: Politics Of Soil Conservation And Land Management In Vihiga 1930-1950., Martin Shidende Shanguhyia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study focuses on the conflict that emerged in the 1930s and 1940s between the British colonial government officials and the African farmers in Vihiga, Western Kenya, over approaches to land management. The colonial state was more than convinced that unprecedented soil erosion in most of the African reserves across the Colony was to blame for much of the social and economic problems that those areas were experiencing. Vihiga, the leading producer of maize in the Colony, was not spared such concerns, hence increased state intervention in this area’s agricultural production and land management processes. Vihiga offered a special place …

George Eliot And The Anxious Construction Of The Domestic Other: Racial Inheritance, Radical Femininity And Masculinity, And National Identity In "The Spanish Gypsy" And "Daniel Deronda"., Christina E. Godlewski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation seeks to articulate the extent to which George Eliot engages in an active dialogue with contemporary scientific thought, particularly in respect to England's Jewish and Gypsy populations. I examine The Spanish Gypsy and Daniel Deronda to determine Eliot's position in relation to ideologies on race, gender, and class. Eliot's texts manage to expose some of the contradictions regarding these two "domestic others" within the dominant discourses of the Victorian period. Chapter one sets out my critical and methodological framework and foregrounds the discursive proximity between the Gypsies, the Jews, the working classes, and women in the Victorian period. …

"Old England In Perfection": Historical Arguments In The Jewish Naturalization Controversy Of 1753., Philip J. Hnatkovich
"Old England In Perfection": Historical Arguments In The Jewish Naturalization Controversy Of 1753., Philip J. Hnatkovich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explores the role of historical arguments in the pamphlets of the Jewish Naturalization Controversy of 1753. Arguments made from the basis of medieval English history were among the most common in the controversy and they are key to explaining not only the origins and outcome of the Jew Bill episode, but also the underlying religious and political assumptions of the eighteenth-century English political nation. An examination of these pamphlets suggests that the conflict was due to latent antisemitism and a distinctive form of political identity, both of which were inextricably connected with Constitutionalist traditions of history and law. …
The History Of Presque Isle And The City Of Erie, Pennsylvania: A Remote Sensing Case Study., Christopher Schaney
The History Of Presque Isle And The City Of Erie, Pennsylvania: A Remote Sensing Case Study., Christopher Schaney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Geomorphology of the Presque Isle peninsula in Erie, Pennsylvania is inherently unstable. Since its initial development 3,500 years before present, long shore drift has caused the peninsula to migrate east across the Long Point-Erie moraine. Erosion on the western shoreline has breached the connection of the peninsula to the mainland 4 times in the past 200 years. The harbor, created by Presque Isle, has been paramount in the development and sustained existence of industry in Erie. The natural shallow entrance to the bay was bypassed in 1827 by the construction of a deep entrance to the harbor. Success of the …

Taxonomic Revision And Paleoecology Of Middle Devonian (Eifelian) Fishes Of The Onondaga, Columbus And Delaware Limestones Of The Eastern United States, Robert Lewis Martin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Eifelian stage of eastern North America has produced the remains of a substantial number of fish taxa, mostly from the Onondaga Limestone of New York and the Columbus and Delaware limestones of Ohio. Fish specimens in rock matrix from the Buffalo Science Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were compared to rock samples taken from quarries in Cheektowaga, New York and Warrensburg, Ohio, in order to determine the units from which the fish specimens originally came. This method allowed reasonable inference into the provenance of the museum specimens.;The stratigraphy indicates that the seas of New York and …
Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox
Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current scholarship regarding Scandinavia has neglected to give all but a cursory glance at the factors involved in Viking expansion. This thesis studies and explains employment opportunities, political motives, and societal norms as separate, individual motives that perpetuated Scandinavian migration, conquest, and adventure from the eighth through the eleventh centuries AD. Afterwards, these investigations are used to describe the various and sometimes conflicting forces of expansion that led to the formation of the Danelaw in England circa AD 870. Over time, the eventual adoption of Christianity and feudal relationships within Scandinavia would bring expansion as well as the Viking Age …
