This thesis examines factors impacting watershed association effectiveness in reaching their intermediate goals (activities conducted and financial resources obtained for watershed protection) to achieve their final outcomes. Factors effecting the formation of watershed associations are also examined. Both analyses are conducted at the watershed level using the …
A Study Of Protein Interactions By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry., Weiling Zhang
A Study Of Protein Interactions By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry., Weiling Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry is gaining recognition as a powerful tool for the study of proteins. It is a “soft” ionization source, which permits the preservation of noncovalent interactions prevailing in biological systems. It is able to form multiply charged ions, which facilitates analyses of very large molecules. The change of the protein conformations can be investigated by charge state distribution shifts in ESI-MS. The noncovalent interactions of proteins with other molecules can also be studied by ESI-MS because these interactions often change the shape of proteins. I examined the effect of various operating parameters on shape of the ESI-MS …

Evaluation Of Biocidal Polymers For The Treatment Of Domestic Water Supplies: Application Of Polymers To The Surface Of Carrier Particles., Robert Matthew Taylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The performance of N-Halamine polymers in eliminating bacteria from water streams was studied in this research. Numerous experiments were performed to determine the efficacy of both pure N-Halamine polymer and polymer coated on carrier particles to remove Escherichia coli from water streams. The results for this research were inconclusive for a number of reasons. First, the polymer used in this research was not active. It lacked the correct chemical structure to kill bacteria effectively. Additionally, when active polymer was received, insufficient quantities were available to produce viable coated carrier particles. The ability to regenerate the polymer using bleach solutions could …
The Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Of Prenatal Stress On Stress Responsive Systems In Rats., David Albert White
The Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Of Prenatal Stress On Stress Responsive Systems In Rats., David Albert White
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research points to a combination of genetic, physiological, and environmental factors in the origin of anxiety and depressive disorders. These factors are adversely impacted by stress and can be influenced by both the prenatal and postnatal environments. Our research shows that offspring of mothers stressed during the last week of gestation appear to be normal in basal behavioral states. However, upon the presentation of stressful stimuli in the forms of anxiogenic drugs (e.g. yohimbine and idazoxan), prenatally stressed offspring respond differentially in comparison with control (normal) offspring. Doses of yohimbine and idazoxan that increased acoustic startle in control animals were …

On day 26 of pregnancy the CL was enucleated, and the ovary contralateral to the gravid uterine horn was removed. Pregnancy was maintained initially by the administration of FGA (6 mg, s.c.) every 12 h, beginning 12 h before lutectomy. Between days 28 and 31, when a follicle had grown to 10 mm in diameter, cows were treated with hCG (1000 IU, i.m.) to induce formation …
An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Microwave Regeneration Of Diesel Particulate Traps., Sriram S. Popuri
An Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Microwave Regeneration Of Diesel Particulate Traps., Sriram S. Popuri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As the number and power ratings of diesel engines in both on-road and off-road applications are increasing, concern over the health effects of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) is becoming more significant. One of the most effective exhaust after-treatment methods is to use ceramic traps to control DPM emissions. Periodic cleaning of traps (regeneration) is essential as the flow resistance progressively increases during filtration of DPM. However, the existing regeneration technologies for ceramic particulate traps are uneconomical and/or cause structural damage to the ceramic trap element. Microwave energy offers the advantage of selectively heating only the DPM, …

These findings are significant since the use of theatre in this fashion offers a means to motivate students and peak interest in target culture, …
The Use Of Analog Functional Analysis In Assessing The Function Of Mealtime Behavior Problems., Peter Anthony Girolami
The Use Of Analog Functional Analysis In Assessing The Function Of Mealtime Behavior Problems., Peter Anthony Girolami
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Some children exhibit disruptive and self-injurious behavior during mealtime, limiting the positive interaction between care giver and child, and decreasing the probability of a nutritionally adequate intake. Research has demonstrated the utility of functional analysis (i.e., identifying controlling variables of problem behavior) for the development of effective non-aversive interventions for a variety of behavior problems. This study applied the methodology of an analog experimental (functional) analysis of behavior to the specific interaction between care givers and children exhibiting mealtime behavior problems. Five conditions that resemble feeding situations were constructed to identify contingent relations between the mealtime behavior problems exhibited by …

The Connection Between The Current Penetration-Based National Ambient Air Quality Standard And Dose Can Be Considered Questionable., Michael T. Berakis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research examined the bias between penetration (as PM2.5) and deposition (as deposited submicrometer particulate DSP) due to the variability of ambient air particle size distributions. A size mobility particle analyzer and portable dust monitor were used to measure count and mass data at three locations in Morgantown West Virginia It was found that over 50% of the median diameters are less than 1µm. A correlation between deposition and penetration was found even though the PM 2.5 criterion is not a good indication of dose. This was due to a lack of variability in the measured distributions. Further research is …
Determining Local Labor Market Outcomes Through Federal Minimum Wage Legislation And Immigration Policy: The Role Of State-Specific Variation., Marvin Edward Dodson
Determining Local Labor Market Outcomes Through Federal Minimum Wage Legislation And Immigration Policy: The Role Of State-Specific Variation., Marvin Edward Dodson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Individual states within the United States have vast and specific structural differences in their economies in general and their labor markets specifically. These structural differences may combine with federal regulation to produce results at odds with the intention of any particular federally legislated regulation. Federal minimum wage legislation and immigration policy are two examples of economic regulation that impose uniformity across the states without regard for state specific structural differences. This dissertation demonstrates that differences do exist between state economies and thus these federal regulatory activities will induce a varied set of responses. There is some theoretical basis to believe …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Manipulation of product formulation protocols and ingredients to optimize texture development and processing yields provides opportunity to produce high quality, low sodium, low-fat restructured beef. The objective of this experiment was to determine effect of preblending with MgCl2 and/or CaCl2 on functionality of A- and C-maturity, in low-sodium, low-fat restructured beef. Addition of CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.001) raw and cooked pH. For both maturities, raw products with CaCl2 had more soluble protein (p< 0.05) than products without CaCl2. C-maturity products contained more soluble myosin (p< 0.10) than A-maturity products. In C-maturity treatments, MgCl2 increased (p< 0.005) myosin solubility. Products with CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.01) actin solubility. In A-maturity products, MgCl2 had less (p< 0.05) soluble actin than treatments without MgCl2. In C-maturity products, MgCl2 contained more (p< 0.05) soluble actin than treatments without MgCl2. Addition of CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.005) cook yield and addition of MgCl2 increased (p< 0.005) cook yield. In C-maturity products, treatments without CaCl2 had a higher (p< 0.0005) peak force than treatments without CaCl2 in A maturity products. In A-maturity products, treatments without MgCl2 had lower (p< 0.005) peak force than the same treatment in C-maturity products and lower (p< 0.05) than MgCl2 containing treatments. C-maturity products were more cohesive (p< 0.08) than A-maturity. Addition of CaCl2 increased (p< 0.05) cohesiveness and added MgCl2 decreased (p< 0.05) cohesiveness. Addition of MgCl2 and CaCl2 and beef maturity affect protein-water interactions and texture development of low-sodium, low-fat restructured beef.
