An American "Duchess" In Disguise: John Singleton Copley's Turquerie Portrait Of Margaret Kemble Gage, Elizabeth Rininger
An American "Duchess" In Disguise: John Singleton Copley's Turquerie Portrait Of Margaret Kemble Gage, Elizabeth Rininger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A number of portraits that John Singleton Copley painted in the years prior to the American Revolution show women clad in turquerie. Traditionally, art historians have explained the appearance of this fashion as provincial colonials copying fashions from their parent country. The appeal of the fashion was strong; however, the political, social, and sexual connotations complicate this explanation for the sitters' choice of dress. While the purpose here is not to disprove the explanation of fashion-consciousness, it is to read these portraits from the perspective of the colonized rather than the colonizer. It is an attempt to decode an appropriated …
Computational Hybrid Systems For Identifying Prognostic Gene Markers Of Lung Cancer, Ying-Wooi Wan
Computational Hybrid Systems For Identifying Prognostic Gene Markers Of Lung Cancer, Ying-Wooi Wan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung cancer is the most fatal cancer around the world. Current lung cancer prognosis and treatment is based on tumor stage population statistics and could not reliably assess the risk for developing recurrence in individual patients. Biomarkers enable treatment options to be tailored to individual patients based on their tumor molecular characteristics. To date, there is no clinically applied molecular prognostic model for lung cancer. Statistics and feature selection methods identify gene candidates by ranking the association between gene expression and disease outcome, but do not account for the interactions among genes. Computational network methods could model interactions, but have …

A Two Dimensional Numerical Soot Model For Advanced Design And Control Of Diesel Particulate Filters, Prabash E. Abeyratne
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the most effective methods to control diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions from heavy duty diesel engines is to use wall flow diesel particulate filters (DPF). It is still a major challenge to get an accurate estimation of soot loading, which is crucial for the engine afterteratment assembly optimization. In the recent past, several advanced computational models of DPF filtration and regeneration have been presented to assess the cost effective optimization of future particulate trap systems. They are characterized by different degree of detail and computational costs, depending on the specific application (i.e diagnostics, control, system design, component design …

Variances In Diurnal Fatigue Patterns And Mood Among Postpartum Women, Amanda L. Mcbean
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Postpartum women have highly disrupted sleep and many experience a disruption in their circadian rhythm during this time. They are also susceptible to mood disruptions during the postpartum period. While mood disruption may be a result of sleep disruption, there are not many data to support a link between circadian rhythm disruption and mood among healthy postpartum women. This study sought to fill that gap. Participants were a convenience sample of 71 women from a larger study. The total sample was 26.4 (SD = 4.0) years old, had a mean annual income of {dollar}51,000 (SD = {dollar}35,000), and had 15.7 …

Following Advice Because It's Been Paid For: Age, The Sunk-Cost Fallacy, And Loss Aversion, Leo Schlosnagle
Following Advice Because It's Been Paid For: Age, The Sunk-Cost Fallacy, And Loss Aversion, Leo Schlosnagle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The sunk-cost fallacy occurs when a person invests more of a resource because they have made an irrecoverable initial investment (i.e., a sunk cost) compared to scenarios in which they did not make an initial investment, or made a smaller initial investment. The normatively correct decision is to invest exactly the same amount regardless of whether or not an initial investment has been made. An aversion to "wasting" or "losing" the initial investment has been cited as a potential reason for why people commit the sunk-cost fallacy (Arkes & Blumer, 1985; Soman, 2004). Additionally, younger adults commit the sunk-cost fallacy …

Predicting Child Safety: The Effect Of Custodial Grandparents' Depression, Home Safety Knowledge, And Gender., Danielle K. Nadorff
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During the past twenty years, an increasing percentage of grandparents have assumed the responsibility for raising their grandchildren, and there are currently over 2.5 million custodial grandparents in the United States (Census, 2003). Significant research has examined the effects of caregiving on custodial grandparents, and found that custodial grandparents experience decreased well-being, and report more stressors than their peers (Hayslip, Kaminski & Earnheart, 2005). One area that has not been well-examined is the effect of being raised by grandparents on grandchild well-being, particularly injury prevention. The safety of these home environments is of importance, as unintentional injury is the leading …

Parental Influence On Physical Activity Of 7 To 9 Year Olds., Janie Marie Leary
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity every day for children. These recommendations are based on the evidence that physical activity has health benefits beyond weight control. Despite these benefits, most children are not taking part in the recommended levels of physical activity. Understanding factors influencing children's physical activity is important to developing successful intervention programs. Intrapersonal and interpersonal influences were found to have the greatest impact on child physical activity. The extent to which each factor predicts physical activity as children age is less understood. Furthermore, not every developmental age …

Police officers are a vital part of every community in the U.S. Officers are routinely exposed to numerous types of stressors, including traumatic events, shift work and organizational issues. The impact of this exposure can lead to chronic physical and psychological health problems. Police officers have been reported to have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Previous studies have found associations between work stress and CVD, and this association may be mediated by the metabolic syndrome (MetSyn). MetSyn is a clustering of metabolic abnormalities, including abdominal obesity, hypertension, glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia, that has been associated with CVD and Type …
Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta
Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Production of hydrogen via the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction normally requires multiple reaction steps followed by CO2 separation. However, in-situ removal of CO2 via the carbonation reaction between CaO and CO2 provides the opportunity to combine WGS and separation reactions into a single unit. Consequently, the need for heat exchangers between catalyst beds as well as the absorption and stripping units for CO2 removal can be eliminated.;In this study, a commercial high-temperature-shift (HTS) catalyst, Fe 2O3/Cr2O3/CuO is used. Calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium oxide incorporated with calcium aluminate (Ca12Al 14O33) are used as sorbents for CO2 capture. The CaO/Ca12Al14O33 sorbent …
Go-Ahead Men: Yankee Westerners Test Masculine Bonds In The Early American Republic, Charlotte Cathy Rodabaugh
Go-Ahead Men: Yankee Westerners Test Masculine Bonds In The Early American Republic, Charlotte Cathy Rodabaugh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Colonial New England fathers normally launched sons' careers, often aided by other male relatives. However, economic developments in the early American republic rendered sons' expectations less sure even as Americans began celebrating the concept of the self-made man and pressured young men to distinguish themselves. Even worse, they asserted that success or failure signaled more about the man than about his particular circumstances. This study delves into some close male relationships through which were negotiated these tensions between cultural expectations and reality. Scholars describe the rise of a distinctly Northern, middle-class manhood, but this project isolates how the relationships that …

The Intrusiveness Of Sensor-Suit Components On The Postures Associated With Performing Repeated Whole-Body Manual Lifting Tasks, Lauren Amanda Visnansky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ergonomics can be defined as the responsibility to ensure that the demands of a job do not exceed the capabilities of a worker (Garg, Chaffin, and Herrin, 1978). Evaluating physiological demands on workers, particularly individuals performing highly varied tasks or monitoring their work in the field, can be a complex problem. Using on-person sensors to record kinematic and physiological measurements throughout extended is one proposed method by which to collect data necessary to evaluate the demands placed on the workers. In order to assess the efficacy of the data that would be collected, it is critical to evaluate the intrusive …
