Impact Of Next Generation Am-Pet Helmet And Support Structure On Subjects' Neck, Samantha Melroy
Impact Of Next Generation Am-Pet Helmet And Support Structure On Subjects' Neck, Samantha Melroy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ambulatory Micro-dose Positron Emission Tomography (AM-PET) is a portable PET brain scanner that does not require patients to remain still but allows them to move as they regularly would over the course of the scan (i.e. clapping hands, walking in place, and other stationary movements). Traditional PET scanners require patients to remain still for an extended duration in a small confined cavity. This is problematic for those who have conditions such as Parkinson's and Autism; in many cases, they must be sedated before the test can be performed. West Virginia University's AM-PET Helmet allows for these regular human movements to …

Effect Of Natural Gas Fuel Composition On Gaseous And Particle Numbermass Emissions From A Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Engine Used In Unconventional Well Development Operations, Sashank Jammalamadaka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Natural gas (NG) reserves have been discovered in abundance with the aid of various technological advancements in the field of directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Prime movers of unconventional well development were previously identified to be over-the-road (OTR) trucks, drilling engines, and hydraulic stimulation engines. The increased NG reserves have driven the industry to shift from using diesel fueled engines to natural gas engines. This allows the industries to take advantage of the produced natural gas to be directly used as energy source to fuel the prime movers involved with unconventional well development.;The primary objective of this study is to …
An Analysis Of The Extinction-Induced Response Burst, Brian Katz
An Analysis Of The Extinction-Induced Response Burst, Brian Katz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the extinction burst is a frequently reported generative effect of extinction, there are few experimental analyses of the phenomenon. The purpose of the present series of experiments was to examine the occurrence, time course, and repeatability of extinction bursts. Six experimentally naive pigeons were exposed to at least five cycles of 5-sessions block of baseline followed by 8-session blocks of extinction. Depending on the condition, baseline sessions were either a fixed-ratio (FR) or variable-ratio (VR) schedule, and transitions from the last baseline session in each cycle to the first extinction session were conducted either between or within sessions. Within …

Signal Fusion And Semantic Similarity Evaluation For Social Media Based Adverse Drug Event Detection, Hameeduddin Irfan Khaja
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent advancements in pharmacovigilance tasks have shown the usage of social media as a resource to obtain real-time signals for drug surveillance. Researchers demonstrated a good potential for the detection of Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) using social media much earlier than the traditional reporting systems maintained by official regulatory authorities like the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Existing automated drug surveillance systems have used various types of social media channels and search query logs for monitoring ADE signals.;In this thesis, we address two key performance issues related to automated drug surveillance systems. The first is to improve the …
Creating The Need To Serve: How West Virginia Spontaneous Disaster Relief Volunteers' Motivations And Experiences Influence Their Willingness For Continued Volunteerism*, Erin Hudnall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Spontaneous volunteerism, or emergent volunteer behavior, is characterized by an individual's actions of impulsively offering volunteer services immediately following the occurrence of a natural disaster or community tragedy, such as a flood or terrorist attack. This type of volunteerism differs from traditional volunteer activities that are usually preplanned and not related to a recent tragedy. It is unclear what types of motivations spur individuals to volunteer after a disaster, whether spontaneous volunteers' experiences lead to willingness for continued volunteerism in the future, and whether motivations and experiences differ significantly by context. To study this phenomenon, spontaneous volunteers who offered help …

Impact Of Inquiry-Based, Question-And-Answer Instruction In High-Enrollment Classes, Matthew R. Schraeder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lecturing is a common way to teach large classes, especially in mathematics. Other styles of instruction have been proven to be more effective in small classroom settings, but those styles are not always practical (or even feasible) in classes with 200+ students. The lecturing dialogue primarily exists at the intersection of Spectrum Theory and the Socratic Method, utilizing inquiry-based learning within the realm of active learning, experiential learning, and constructivism to appeal to learners with various learning styles, which helps students to discover new information (specifically, why things occur in the way that they do) and make connections between old …

Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil
Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We examine two proposed indexing algorithms taking advantage of the new SSMinT libraries. The two algorithms primarily differ in their selection of documents for learning. The batch indexing method selects some random number of documents for learning. The iterative indexing method uses a single randomly selected document to discover semantic signatures, which are then used to find additional related documents. The batch indexing method discovers one to three semantic signatures per document, resulting in poor clustering performance as evaluated by human cross-validation of clusters using the Adjusted Rand Index. The iterative indexing method discovers more semantic signatures per document, resulting …

"Home Sweet Away-From-Home?" Morgantown, West Virginia's Sunnyside Neighborhood As A Cultural Landscape, Pamela Yvonne Curtin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sunnyside is a 130-acre neighborhood bordering West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Since the 1890s, it has been home to a variety of transient residents, including industrial workers, families, and individuals associated with the University. Beginning in the 1960s, Sunnyside transitioned into Morgantown's primary student neighborhood. Students took up residence in old two- and three-story frame houses broken into smaller units; often, these houses lacked necessary upkeep, failed code standards, and indicated the neighborhood's broader deteriorating conditions. Furthermore, student parties in Sunnyside grew increasingly intense and reflected negatively on West Virginia University, labeled in the 1970s as a "party …
Development Of Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Acid Mine Drainage And Municipal Wastewater Management In Energy Producing Regions, Dongyang Deng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acid mine drainage (AMD) and municipal wastewater (MWW) are two major pollution sources in headwaters of Appalachia and energy producing regions worldwide. Incorporating the prevalent chemistry of the two wastes in designing treatment technologies for concurrent management of the wastes can provide multi-faceted benefits. First, alkalinity in MWW can raise the pH of AMD upon mixing, and promote chemical precipitation of metal hydroxides and carbonates. Second, low solubility of phosphate with multivalent metals (e.g., Fe and Al) can be an effective mechanism for recovering phosphate from MWW. Third, sulfate ions from AMD can serve as an electron acceptor for oxidation …
The Effect Of A Missing At Random Missing Data Mechanism On A Single Layer Artificial Neural Network With A Sigmoidal Activation Function And The Use Of Multiple Imputation As A Correction, Taron Dick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Missing data is a common problem encountered in statistical analysis. However, little is known about how bias inducing missing at random missing data mechanisms affect predictive model performance measures such as sensitivity, specificity, error rate, ROC curves, and AUC. I investigate the effect of missing at random missing data mechanisms on a single layer artificial neural network with a sigmoidal activation function, equivalent to a binary logistic regression. Binary logistic regression is frequently used in health research and so it is a logical starting point to understand the effects of missing data on statistical learning models that could be used …

Comparison Of Methods Of Measuring Electronic Cigarette Puff Topography, Nicholas Felicione
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
To evaluate properly the potential benefits and harms of electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), it is important to evaluate how individuals puff from an electronic cigarette, or their puff topography. This measure, which includes indices of puff number, duration, volume, interpuff interval, and flow rate, can be used to predict exposure to toxicants including nicotine. Puff topography has been studied extensively for cigarette smokers, but not ECIG users. The studies that have involved electronic cigarette topography measurement have done so using devices that have not been thoroughly validated or proven reliable. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate methods of …

Corticospinal Excitability During Locomotion In Humans, Lisa Kogan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The coordination between signals from cortical structures and spinal segmental pathways responsible for the control of locomotion remains a contentious issue in human motor control. The signals are known to be integrated, but the nature of these neural calculations is unknown. To understand these interactions in humans, noninvasive cortical stimulation techniques can be combined with detailed analyses of muscle activity patterns in locomotor tasks.;In this study, I tested the relationship between corticospinal inputs and the forward velocity of each limb. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to elicit motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in 12 healthy human volunteers during locomotion on …

Beyond The Classroom: The Need For Support For Parents With A Child Diagnosed With Autism, Id, And Behavioral Problems, Erica Curington
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Families with individuals with special needs face many different struggles such as identifying needs and/or appropriate supports, accessing those supports, and then locating providers to help implement those supports (Boehm & Carter, 2016). These individuals may need continuous support to live meaningful and productive lives outside of the classroom. As students leave the classroom, the need for addressing these struggles becomes of greater value and difficulty for families. This is especially true in more rural areas due to lack of services. The following research questions were utilized during this study: What services have been used outside of the classroom to …
Depression, Treatment Response To Tnfi, And Economic Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arijita Deb
Depression, Treatment Response To Tnfi, And Economic Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arijita Deb
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Depression is one of the most frequently occurring conditions in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients and understanding depression as a comorbidity in RA is very important. The link between RA and depression is very complex and influenced by a multitude of factors such as shared pathophysiologic pathways of inflammation, RA-related treatment response, as well as the patient's demographic and socio-economic factors, and general difficulties in coping with the disease. Depression can increase the clinical, humanistic, and economic burden among RA patients. Growing evidence now suggests that depression is a systemic inflammatory condition and may exert a negative influence on the treatment …
Effects Of A Manikin On The Capture Efficiency And Protection Efficiency Of A Small Rectangular Hood, Brian Scott Geissler
Effects Of A Manikin On The Capture Efficiency And Protection Efficiency Of A Small Rectangular Hood, Brian Scott Geissler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary indicator of capturing hood effectiveness is widely assumed to be the "capture velocity" measured normal to the center of the hood face, at the furthest location of the contaminant source. The velocity required at this distance (Vx) is thought to correspond to the appropriate flow (Q) required to capture the contaminant. The adequacy of Vx as a surrogate for hood effectiveness has long been poorly understood and has been little studied. Few considerations of potentially disruptive parameters, such as draft velocity, hood orientation, and operator presence are made during the design phase.;In this study, an anatomically correct heated, …

A Study Of Pressure Variation In Wellbores During Gas Kicks, Seyhmus Guner
A Study Of Pressure Variation In Wellbores During Gas Kicks, Seyhmus Guner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is critical to understand the dynamic behavior and consequences of undesired reservoir influxes that triggers well control emergencies. In contrast to liquid kick, gas influx migration in water based mud and solubility in oil based mud represents exceptionally hazardous conditions. Operation delay time would result in a pressure build-up at the surface with increasing risk of fracturing the casing shoe.;In this study, critical factors affecting gas bubble rise velocity in a closed wellbore are studied. These factors are influx size, annulus clearance, reservoir pressure, oil/water ratio, drilling fluid density, reservoir temperature, plastic viscosity and yield point. Three different well …
