Pe Teachers' Perceptions Of Technology-Related Learning Experiences: A Qualitative Investigation, Jun-Hyung Baek Jan 2016

Pe Teachers' Perceptions Of Technology-Related Learning Experiences: A Qualitative Investigation, Jun-Hyung Baek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background/Purpose: Educational organizations, such as National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), established technology-related standards indicating the knowledge and skills necessary for teachers to integrate technology. Such standards have challenged teacher education programs to restructure existing PETE program to prepare teachers to have knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for successful technology integration (Jones, Bulger, & Wyant, 2012). Yet, physical education (PE) teachers frequently reported that they still do not feel sufficiently prepared to incorporate technology into their classroom (Juniu, Shonfeld, & Ganot, 2013). Thus, the purpose of this study was to …

Seismic Geometric Attribute Analysis For Fracture Characterization: New Methodologies And Applications, Haibin Di Jan 2016

Seismic Geometric Attribute Analysis For Fracture Characterization: New Methodologies And Applications, Haibin Di

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 3D subsurface exploration, detection of faults and fractures from 3D seismic data is vital to robust structural and stratigraphic analysis in the subsurface, and great efforts have been made in the development and application of various seismic attributes (e.g. coherence, semblance, curvature, and flexure). However, the existing algorithms and workflows are not accurate and efficient enough for robust fracture detection, especially in naturally fractured reservoirs with complicated structural geometry and fracture network. My Ph.D. research is proposing the following scopes of work to enhance our capability and to help improve the resolution on fracture characterization and prediction.;For discontinuity attribute, …

Analysis Of Paleofluids In The Sant Corneli Anticline, South-Central Spanish Pyrenees, Amanda Delisle Jan 2016

Analysis Of Paleofluids In The Sant Corneli Anticline, South-Central Spanish Pyrenees, Amanda Delisle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Five systematic joint sets (J1-J5) have been observed at and around the Sant Corneli anticline in the south-central Spanish Pyrenees. These joint sets have been identified and grouped primarily on observed orientations in the field by two previous studies; however, syntectonic strata and cross-cutting relationships do not fully constrain the timing of these sets. This lack of timing constraints has resulted in two differing interpretations regarding the timing of each joint set. Understanding the conditions (i.e. pressure, temperature) of fracture filling cements at the time of cement formation can provide direct evidence for fluid evolution and migration at the time …

Influence Of The Gondwanide Magmatic Arc And Cape Fold Belt On The Karoo Basin - South Africa, Clyde Pitt Findlay Iii Jan 2016

Influence Of The Gondwanide Magmatic Arc And Cape Fold Belt On The Karoo Basin - South Africa, Clyde Pitt Findlay Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Permian Ecca Group in South Africa preserves a thick succession of clastic basin fill, including mud-rich turbidite sequences and hemipelagic mudstone units. Provenance of mud influx into the basin is an important constraint for understanding the tectonic processes influencing regional basin development and distribution of organic-rich Lower Ecca Group mudstone and subsequent depositional style of the Upper Ecca Group turbidite systems. In this study, we interpret the Ecca Group mudstones were sourced by the Cape Fold Belt and Gondwanide Magmatic Arc based on geochemistry and mineralogy of 38 mudstone samples. Muscovite and high quartz content (average 32.9%) indicate metamorphic …

Spectacular Struggles: Utopian Whiteness, Black Resistance, And The National Imaginary In Nineteenth-Century America, Courtney L. Novosat Jan 2016

Spectacular Struggles: Utopian Whiteness, Black Resistance, And The National Imaginary In Nineteenth-Century America, Courtney L. Novosat

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Through an analysis of the popularity, didacticism, and rhetoric of literary utopias and world's fairs, Spectacular Struggles argues that during the latter half of the nineteenth century our national narrative makes use of an inherently and uncritically white utopian form to forge an exclusionary, white national identity as an anxious response to a tumultuous era of social change. The first chapter traces the origins of this "white (male) utopian complex" from More's sui generis Utopia to the white utopian frameworks governing our self-representation at the fair, national narratives, and even our histories. From this grounding, I turn to Edgar Allen …

Climate Change, Capitalism, And Citizen Science: Developing A Dialectical Framework For Examining Volunteer Participation In Climate Change Research, Joshua A. Wixom Jan 2016

Climate Change, Capitalism, And Citizen Science: Developing A Dialectical Framework For Examining Volunteer Participation In Climate Change Research, Joshua A. Wixom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation discusses the complex social relations that link citizen science, scientific literacy, and the dissemination of information to the public. Scientific information is not produced in value-neutral settings by people removed from their social context. Instead, science is a social pursuit and the scientist's social context is embedded in the knowledge produced. Additionally, the dissemination of this information via numerous media outlets is filtered through institutional lenses and subject to journalistic norms. As a result, the general public must be able to recognize the inherent biases in this information. Yet, the rates of scientific literacy in the U.S. are …

Three Essays On The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (Hipc) Initiative Debt Relief, Minh Tam Tammy Schlosky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation consists of three essays that investigate the effects of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to my dissertation essays. Chapter 2 is composed of my first essay, which attempts to answer whether there is any moral hazard committed by the HIPC member countries as they work toward completing the requirements set by the HIPC Initiative. Chapter 3 takes a spatial econometrics approach and investigates whether there are any spillover effects of HIPC membership on adjacent countries. I use the Spatial Durbin Model to estimate the effects of HIPC affiliation on neighboring countries. …

Flooding And Reequilibration Of A Series Of Pittsburgh Bed Underground Coal Mines, 1980 To 2015, David D. M. Light

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the water-level elevation history of selected flooding and flooded underground mines in the Pittsburgh coal basin of SW Pennsylvania from the time of closure until post-flooding pool-level reequilibration. Mines within this mining district developed pools with nearly steady-state groundwater flow within 10 to 50 years after closure. Equilibrated pool levels within each of the mines were controlled by various combinations of spillage to the surface or other mines, pumpage, and barrier leakage. In a study of flooding in the Clarksville, PA area, field water-level observations, mine geometry, barrier hydraulic conductivity, recharge rates, and late-stage storage gains were …

Reservoir Characterization And Flow Simulation For Co 2-Eor In The Tensleep Formation Using Discrete Fracture Networks, Teapot Dome, Wyoming, Payam Kavousi Ghahfarokhi Jan 2016

Reservoir Characterization And Flow Simulation For Co 2-Eor In The Tensleep Formation Using Discrete Fracture Networks, Teapot Dome, Wyoming, Payam Kavousi Ghahfarokhi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Tensleep oil reservoir at Teapot Dome, Wyoming, USA, is a naturally fractured tight sandstone reservoir that has been considered for carbon-dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) and sequestration. CO2-EOR analysis requires a thorough understanding of the Tensleep fracture network. Wireline image logs from the field suggest that the reservoir fracture network is dominated by early formed structural hinge oblique fractures with interconnectivity enhanced by hinge parallel and hinge perpendicular fracture sets. Available post stack 3D seismic data are used to generate a seismic fracture intensity attribute for the reservoir fracture network. The resulting seismic fracture intensity is qualitatively correlated to …

The Role Of West Virginia University In The Economic Development Of West Virginia: A General Equilibrium Approach, Priyanjali Sinha Jan 2016

The Role Of West Virginia University In The Economic Development Of West Virginia: A General Equilibrium Approach, Priyanjali Sinha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Universities, industries and government are major institutions and play an important role in local economic growth and development. They often work collectively in achieving these goals. While the role of institutions in economic development is well-founded in the literature, a university's strategic role as an institution to encourage local area development is only now being recognized. The existing literature recognizes the spillover effect of mainly university research on local industrial productivity and innovations at the national level. The impact of various university activities on numerous other local economic development indicators like per capita income, poverty, school enrollments etc., at county …

Delineating Compressional Structures Through Refined Geosteering Methods, Chad Koury Jan 2016

Delineating Compressional Structures Through Refined Geosteering Methods, Chad Koury

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Horizontal gas development wells drilled in the Marcellus Formation in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania encountered tight fold structures, as detected through geosteering. However, compared to fold analogues in outcrop and in laboratory settings, the geosteering interpretations generated from existing methods depicted these sub-surface structures with varying accuracy. To more acutely determine the cross-sectional profile of these geologic structures, I developed a method whereby an algorithm is used to project and extrapolate the existing geosteering data into a valid 2-dimensional cross-section.;Using this new method, I have determined that Devonian strata in the Appalachian Basin has an overlying detachment in the Upper Marcellus …

The Role Of Art Education In The K-12 Curriculum In West Virginia A Comparative Case Study Using Ethnographic Methods, Helen G. Poffenbarger-Jordan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The visual arts are considered a core subject in the United States public school curriculum. However, the way in which visual arts curriculum is implemented in schools is largely left up to the individual states. This study focused on how art educators' design, direct, find support, and operate visual arts programs in the K-12 public school system in West Virginia. Ethnographic research methods were implemented for this study.

Petrophysical Analysis And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Middle Ordovician Point Pleasant From A Cored Interval In Morgan County, Ohio, Erica Schubert Jan 2016

Petrophysical Analysis And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Middle Ordovician Point Pleasant From A Cored Interval In Morgan County, Ohio, Erica Schubert

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Middle Ordovician Point Pleasant Formation has become a major focus in the United States for unconventional, horizontal drilling. It stretches throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Kentucky, and West Virginia and is estimated to contain upwards of 38 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 940 million barrels of oil. Due to its low porosity, low permeability, and great burial depth, the Point Pleasant was not considered an economically feasible option until recent advancements in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques. In order to increase production and drill more profitable wells, the geology of the Point Pleasant Formation needs to …

Muslim Education And Communal Conflict In Colonial Bengal: British Policies And Muslim Responses From 1854 To 1947, Nilanjana Paul

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines the development of Muslim education under British rule in Bengal. In the first part of the dissertation, I analyze why Muslims were unable to progress under colonial rule and examine some of the factors that helped to change their view towards the British from the late nineteenth century. The role played by Nawab Bahadur Abdul Latif in improving Muslim education is used here as a case study to show how elite Muslims deprived their co-religionists of Western education in order to reduce competition in the field of employment. In the second part of the dissertation, I study …

The Depositional And Diagenetic History Of The Permian Quartermaster Group Of Western Kansas, Joseph James Pritt Jan 2016

The Depositional And Diagenetic History Of The Permian Quartermaster Group Of Western Kansas, Joseph James Pritt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Permo-Triassic red beds and evaporites can be found in a variety of locations around the world. Largely deposited once the supercontinent Pangea formed, many of these units have historically been interpreted as marine to marginal marine deposits due to their association with evaporites. Evaporites, however, can also form in continental settings. Recent studies of red beds and evaporites within the Leonardian-Guadalupian Nippewalla Group of Kansas suggest some red beds and evaporites were deposited in acid saline lakes and associated environments. The middle to late Permian Quartermaster Group, which overlies the Nippewalla Group, has not been as extensively studied. The main …

Did The Late Paleozoic Ice Age Cause Reduced Evolutionary Rates In Marine Invertebrates? : A Test Using The Crinoid Fossil Record, Daniel C. Segessenman Jan 2016

Did The Late Paleozoic Ice Age Cause Reduced Evolutionary Rates In Marine Invertebrates? : A Test Using The Crinoid Fossil Record, Daniel C. Segessenman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A 2003 paper by Stanley and Powell reported depressed rates of origination and extinction in marine invertebrates during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) as compared to background rates during the Paleozoic. In their paper, trilobites were used as a specific example to support the hypothesis of sluggish evolutionary rates. Thus, can their hypothesis be tested using a different fossil group? Using an updated version of the crinoid database from Sepkoski's 2002 compendium of fossil marine genera, adding data from multiple sources, rates of origination, extinction, and genus duration were calculated at the stage level for the interval from the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Carnduff 2 core, drilled in 2014 by the Gaelectric Storage Limited Energy Company in County Antrim, Northern Ireland contains Triassic red mudstones and evaporites of the Mercia Mudstone Group. These rocks have been poorly studied in Northern Ireland. However, recent work suggests that they were deposited in an ancient perennial saline lake system. This thesis describes a 591.6 meter core with 92.7% recovery. Fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry, and laser Raman spectroscopy were conducted on 12 halite beds of the Larne Halite Member to characterize Triassic lake waters.;Chevron and cumulate halite crystals contain abundant unaltered primary fluid inclusions. Most primary …

Bee Natural History, Diversity, And Management In West Virginia, Matthew Mckinney Jan 2016

Bee Natural History, Diversity, And Management In West Virginia, Matthew Mckinney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The value of bees as providers of pollination, an incredibly important ecosystem service, is well understood. Since the detection of colony collapse disorder, the concern over the health of both managed and naturally occurring bee populations has been in the limelight, sometimes being discussed nearly as much in popular media as it is in scientific research. While an ideal situation may be the complete recovery of Apis mellifera populations, the causes of colony losses are not fully understood. Therefore, we must also consider our alternative options such as managing areas to better support natural bees and utilizing alternative managed species, …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group from the Carnduff 02 core from County Antrim, Northern Ireland was deposited by shallow perennial saline lakes and associated environments such as saline mudflats, dry mudflats, siltflats, sandflats, and desert soils. This setting contained shallow acid brines that underwent flooding and evapoconcentration cycles in an arid climate. The redbeds and evaporites of the group have a complicated diagenetic history.;The Mercia Mudstone Group is composed of five main lithologies: mudstone, siltstone, displacive halite, bedded halite, and bedded gypsum. Other less abundant lithologies include sandstone, mud/halite conglomerate, and igneous intrusive rocks. The mudstone and siltstone are composed …

Dominant Controls On Organic-Rich Shale Deposition: Geochemical Evidences From The Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Ruiqian Chen Jan 2016

Dominant Controls On Organic-Rich Shale Deposition: Geochemical Evidences From The Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Ruiqian Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation presents new results of the linkages between primary productivity, bottom water redox conditions and clastic input associated with the Acadian orogeny of the Marcellus Shale.;Chapter 1 compares the isotopic and geochemical characteristics of sediments of a liquids-prone well (WV-7) in Wetzel County with a gas-prone well (WV-6) in Monongalia County, northern West Virginia. The difference in organic carbon isotopes indicates that the dominant organic matter preserved in each core is different: delta13Corg values are lighter on average in WV-6 compared with WV-7. A possible explanation is that a larger fraction of terrestrial organic matter was preserved in the …

The Role Of Debt And Dependency In Shaping West Virginia's Political Economy, 1820-1920, Chad R. Holmes Jan 2016

The Role Of Debt And Dependency In Shaping West Virginia's Political Economy, 1820-1920, Chad R. Holmes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis evaluates how West Virginia's perceptions of debt and dependency were formed and contributed to the state's political economy throughout the nineteenth century. As a part of the Virginia Commonwealth, western Virginians used antebellum political debates to independently control regional resources and seize the political prestige of connecting the nation's east to the nation's west. When eastern Virginians seceded from the Union in 1861, western Virginians saw an opportunity to claim their independence. Secessionist and unionist support provided the political chaos necessary for western Virginians to declare their independence. Political uprisings sprouted up throughout western Virginia. Northwestern Virginia's pro-Union …

Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu Jan 2016

Using Tree-Ring Data To Analyze The Effects Of Volcanic Eruptions On Climate In Inner Asia From 500 Bce To Present, Jennie Zhu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Volcanic eruptions have influenced regional and global climate on annual, interannual, decadal, and multi-decadal time scales. However, past studies have largely focused on the response of global temperature to modern eruptions with the aid of satellite records. This approach limits the number of eruptions that can be studied and restricts our knowledge to relatively small events when compared to the volcanic history of the late Holocene. I used modern climate records to evaluate the effect of recent eruptions on Mongolian climate. I then extended my analysis to the last 2500 years by examining existing and new tree-ring data from Mongolia …

Challenging Historical Gis Through Unstructured Historical Primary Source Materials: Uncovering Sixteenth-Century St. Vincent, Aosta, Italy, James P. Schindling

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The challenge to Historical GIS examined in this study is how to enable a system to accommodate sparse, unstructured, and spatially ambiguous data. The goal of this research is to take up this challenge by developing an Historical GIS that allows researchers to gain an understanding of a geography of the past. The study area for this research is the town of St. Vincent in what is now the Italian Alps and the time period is the sixteenth century. Three primary criteria were used in the selection of sixteenth-century St. Vincent as the case study for this research. The first …

Sites Of Education: Race, Memory, And The Conflicting Discourses Of Learning In America, 1827-1914, Douglas Terry Jan 2016

Sites Of Education: Race, Memory, And The Conflicting Discourses Of Learning In America, 1827-1914, Douglas Terry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is a cultural study that challenges the handling of race in the history of American education by exploring how educational discourse shapes race. It argues that education itself is a manifestation of race, inseparable from the iterative processes of racial formation. While we take it as a prevailing truism that race is learned, this dissertation shows how the educational system itself is central to this learning.;It explores race in the educational landscape in a similar way to how scholars explore tension between history and cultural memory. In this manner, the dissertation focuses on what it terms "sites of …

Migratory Genomics Of Lake Sturgeon, Justine Whitaker Jan 2016

Migratory Genomics Of Lake Sturgeon, Justine Whitaker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lake sturgeon are large, freshwater fish and the only species of sturgeon native to the Great Lakes. Their historic range extends from the Hudson Bay, down through the Great Lakes and into the Mississippi River basin. In the early 1900's, sturgeon became a valuable fishery and were soon overfished for both meat and caviar. This, in combination with damming, pollution, and habitat degradation, caused a drastic decline in their population. Some populations were extirpated, while others have been reduced to 1% of their historic population size (Auer, 1996). The St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS) hosts one of the largest lake …

Immersive Geodesign: Exploring The Built Environment Through The Coupling Of Geodesign, 3d Modeling, And Immersive Geography, Marvin Davis Jan 2016

Immersive Geodesign: Exploring The Built Environment Through The Coupling Of Geodesign, 3d Modeling, And Immersive Geography, Marvin Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

GeoDesign is a relatively new field that serves as a repurposing of many different disciplines concerned with design decisions about the built environment. More specifically, GeoDesign represents a coupling of urban planning concepts with the analytical capabilities of GIS. While GIS has been used in planning mostly in the two-dimensional realm, the built environment is three-dimensional and challenges GIS in the handling of the vertical dimension, notably in floor-by-floor uses in mixed-use developments, basement-level parking, light capture, and intervisibility between structures. This research advances GeoDesign by addressing these three-dimensional issues through the utilization of highly-detailed 3D models using Trimble SketchUp, …

A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna Jan 2016

A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation advances the study of New England's religious history by exploring the complex and contested religious discourse surrounding puritan ecclesiology and the conceptual place of Native Americans within physical and imagined communities. While relations between puritan missionaries such as John Eliot and Thomas Mayhew and early "Praying Indians," or Indian Christians, have been closely studied, this work draws attention to the importance of theology and religious discourse in realms like hermeneutics, ecclesiology, and eschatology in shaping the nature of these exchanges. Despite communal and cultural differences, religious culture frequently served as a means of bridging these gaps to foster …

The Impact Of Rural Contexts On Citizenship Education, Eric D. Moffa Jan 2016

The Impact Of Rural Contexts On Citizenship Education, Eric D. Moffa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social studies teachers are sensitive to local school and community values and, therefore, tactful when making decisions about their curriculum (Romanowski, 1996; Shaver, Davis, & Helburn, 1980; Thornton, 1989), including its citizenship aims (Saada, 2013; Sondel, 2015; Vinson, 1998). For this reason, scholars call for better contextual understandings of teachers' curricular-instructional gatekeeping (Thornton, 1989; Vinson, 1998). Rural-specific examples of this phenomenon remain largely unexamined (Martin & Chiodo, 2007; Pattison-Meek, 2012), though rural schools make up 32.9% of all schools in the United States (Johnson, Showalter, Klein, & Lester, 2014) and rural communities offer distinct socio-geographic and socio-cultural contexts (Brown & …
