Designing A Face Detection Captcha, Adam C. Day May 2010

Designing A Face Detection Captcha, Adam C. Day

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Completely Automated Tests for Telling Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHAs) are quickly becoming a standard for security in every online interface that could be the subject to spam or other exploitation. The majority of today's CAPTCHA technologies rely on text-based images, which present the user with a string of distorted characters and asks the user to type out the characters. The problem with CAPTCHAs is that they are often difficult to solve and can generally be successfully defeated using techniques such as segmentation and optical character recognition. We introduce an image face recognition based CAPTCHA which presents the user with …

The Alto Trombone As A Transposing Instrument, Brian Kirke Plitnik May 2010

The Alto Trombone As A Transposing Instrument, Brian Kirke Plitnik

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coinciding with a concern for authenticity and balance in the orchestral brass section, and a renewed interest in 18th century solo trombone literature, the nearly forgotten alto trombone has enjoyed a rousing comeback in recent decades. The alto trombone has traditionally existed as a concert-pitch instrument likely due to its early use in church music as a means of doubling the voice. Standard notational practice for the modern E-Flat alto has changed little over the centuries. While performance practice in previous centuries is not verifiable, current alto trombonists are tenor trombonists first; the alto trombone is nearly always a secondary …

Bat Use Of Created And Natural Wetlands, Marcia L. Maslonek May 2010

Bat Use Of Created And Natural Wetlands, Marcia L. Maslonek

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Compensatory wetland mitigation is a common practice to account for wetland losses due to dredging and filling under the Clean Water Act, but successful replacement of function is rarely achieved. Small, isolated wetlands also receive no federal protection, and are usually not included in accounts of losses. Although latest reports show an increase in wetlands for the first time, this is due in large part to voluntary construction of open water ponds, while the loss of freshwater emergent wetlands continues to decline. Research on the wildlife functions of wetlands has focused on plants, invertebrates, avian or amphibian species. But wetlands …

Published and unpublished data of rock characteristics, pressure, temperature, and formation water geochemistry, along with new brine samples were integrated within a geographical information system to better understand the regional-scale hydrogeological regime and its relation to geologic CO2 sequestration potential. The up-dip flow of the Oriskany Sandstone formation waters is generally controlled by outcrops at high elevation to the …

Effects Of Diadochokinetic Rate On Vocal Fundamental Frequency And Intensity In Normally Speaking Young Adults, Oya Topbas May 2010

Effects Of Diadochokinetic Rate On Vocal Fundamental Frequency And Intensity In Normally Speaking Young Adults, Oya Topbas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It has been commonly assumed that as people speak faster, they speak in higher vocal fundamental frequencies. Since the frequency and intensity often vary together, vocal intensity is expected to increase with speaking rate as well. The purpose of this study was to explore how speaking rate affects vocal fundamental frequency and intensity during diadochokinetic speaking tasks in normal speaking adults. Twenty-four normal young adults, 12 male and 12 female, were asked to repeat the syllables "/pLambda/, /pLambda-t[schwa]/, and /pLambda-t[schwa]-k[schwa]/" at a self-selected comfortable rate, then at a slow rate modeled about one syllable per second, and finally at their …

The Effect Of Aging And Resveratrol Supplementation On Bone Mass And Strength In Hindlimb Suspended Male Rats, Stephanie Wright May 2010

The Effect Of Aging And Resveratrol Supplementation On Bone Mass And Strength In Hindlimb Suspended Male Rats, Stephanie Wright

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Resveratrol has recently become a popular dietary supplement because of its potential for reducing the effects of aging and various age-related diseases. However, few studies have investigated the role of resveratrol in improving bone loss associated with aging. It has been widely reported that mechanical unloading increases bone loss. The elderly experience a prevalence of reduced mechanical loading due to declining activity levels and increased incidence of bed rest. In rats, hind-limb suspension (HLS) simulates mechanical unloading of bone. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effects of aging and resveratrol supplementation on bone health in HLS …

Empirical Analysis Of Bwt-Based Lossless Image Compression, Kalyan Varma Bhupathiraju

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Burrows-Wheeler Transformation (BWT) is a text transformation algorithm originally designed to improve the coherence in text data. This coherence can be exploited by compression algorithms such as run-length encoding or arithmetic coding. However, there is still a debate on its performance on images. Motivated by a theoretical analysis of the performance of BWT and MTF, we perform a detailed empirical study on the role of MTF in compressing images with the BWT. This research studies the compression performance of BWT on digital images using different predictors and context partitions. The major interest of the research is in finding efficient …

Permeability Of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete As Affected By Binder Content, Joseph A. Giompalo May 2010

Permeability Of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete As Affected By Binder Content, Joseph A. Giompalo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the primary objectives when constructing hot mix asphalt concrete (HMAC) is achieving the target density in order for the pavement to be impermeable. If the density is too low, water infiltration causes pavement damage from freeze-thaw and other effects caused by the presence of water. If the pavement density is too high, rutting, flushing, and shoving will occur.;This research used the Florida Method of Test for Measurement of Water Permeability of Compacted Asphalt Paving Mixtures to examine how permeability is affected by binder content and compaction level. Asphalt samples containing 5.2, 5.7, 6.2, and 6.7 percent binder at …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Very little attention has been paid to crinoids of the St. Louis Limestone since the 19th century. Now that the stratigraphic boundaries of the formation are well defined and a collection of crinoids specific to the St. Louis has become available, updated systematics and evolutionary paleoecology is possible.;Previous work recognized a significant transition in the macroevolution of crinoids that occurred during the Mississippian Period. The diversity of crinoid taxa changed substantially from faunas dominated by camerates and primitive cladids to those dominated by advanced cladids. Much of that change took place during the Meramecian Stage, which includes the St. Louis …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Exposure of fish to estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EEDCs) is believed to be a contributing factor of intersex (the presence of immature oocytes in the testes) and fish kills in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. EEDCs are often seen in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants. A simple and common way to look at the estrogenicity of water samples is to deploy Passive Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) and extract the hydrophilic compounds from the filters with methanol. Samplers were deployed upstream and downstream of two wastewater treatment plants, one on the Conococheague River and one on the Monocacy River, …

Evaluating The Impact Of Oceanic/Atmospheric Teleconnections On Historical Wildfires In West Virginia (1939--2006), Cary Lynch May 2010

Evaluating The Impact Of Oceanic/Atmospheric Teleconnections On Historical Wildfires In West Virginia (1939--2006), Cary Lynch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oceanic/atmospheric oscillations affect climate in many ways. This study quantitatively examined climate teleconnection patterns and in turn analyzed the influence of climate on wildfire activity within West Virginia from 1939--2006. Identifying the linkages between oscillations and climate variability has the potential to greatly improve seasonal forecasting capabilities. Despite the complexity inherent in local fire regimes, regional fire activity often oscillates in phase with year-to-year climatic variability. This climate-fire connection raises the possibility that historical factors inherent in the local ecosystem are overridden by regional climatic events and trends. A robust statistical analysis that utilized correlation, regression, principle components, and Superposed …

Enhanced Coal Bed Methane Production And Sequestration Of Carbon Dioxide In Unmineable Coal Seams., Camilo E. Calderon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The process of modeling reservoirs that are controlled by desorption such as Coal Bed Methane has always been challenging due to the complexities associated with flow of fluids in these types of reservoirs. These complexities become more notable while the injection process is taking place since interaction between the injected gas alters the coal properties with respect to time. This manuscript summarizes the results of a study that includes reservoir simulation and modeling efforts that are focused on natural gas production and subsequent CO2 injection into an unmineable coal seam in the Marshall Country West Virginia. Two coal seams (Pittsburgh …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Worldwide, there are over 1000 species of blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Blow flies display a variety of habits, however they are best known for their role in the decomposition of carrion. As yet, there are few studies of their population genetic structure, although such data would contribute to such fields as pest management, taxonomy, forensic entomology and veterinary medicine. Although it is typically assumed that carrion fly populations are panmictic, this has been disputed. This research focused on developing a new protocol to understand the population genetic structure in carrion flies using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) profiles. My specific …

Numerical Modeling Of Near-Surface Carbon Dioxide Migration With Barometric Pumping Effects., Guoxiang Liu Jan 2010

Numerical Modeling Of Near-Surface Carbon Dioxide Migration With Barometric Pumping Effects., Guoxiang Liu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With anthropogenic activities, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has dramatically risen, very likely resulting in global warming and climate change. Capturing and disposing of the produced CO2 in geological formations can mitigate this problem provided that there is no substantial leakage from the subsurface back to atmosphere for hundreds of years. The detection of any CO2 leakage is essential to verify that the sequestration is effective, to initiate corrective actions if leakage is discovered, and to accurately assign storage credits in a "cap and trade" regulatory system. Natural fluctuations in atmospheric pressure are one factor that influences the …

Development Of Gold-Immobilized P450 Platform For Exploring The Effect Of Oligomer Formation On P450-Mediated Metabolism For In Vitro To In Vivo Drug Metabolism Predictions., Jarod L. Kabulski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The cytochrome P450 (P450) enzyme family is responsible for the biotransformation of a wide range of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds, as well as being the major metabolic enzyme in first pass drug metabolism. In vivo drug metabolism for P450 enzymes is predicted using in vitro data obtained from a reconstituted expressed P450 system, but these systems have not always been proven to accurately represent in vivo enzyme kinetics, due to interactions caused by oligomer formation. These in vitro systems use soluble P450 enzymes prone to oligomer formation and studies have shown that increased states of protein aggregation directly affect the …

Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee Jan 2010

Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The results of the investigation into the role of CK2 and PP2A in Drosophila position effect variegation (PEV) and chromatin modification are presented here. PEV is seen when a gene normally found in euchromatin is placed in close proximity to heterochromatin. The propensity of heterochromatin to spread down the chromosome often results in inactivation of the displaced gene by compaction into heterochromatin. The study presented here utilized two different PEV reporter genes for investigating the role of two posttranslational modifying enzymes, the kinase CK2 and the phosphatase PP2A in chromatin formation. The reporter genes used in this study encode for …

Ac And Dc Electrophoretic Separations: Investigating Binding Affinity Interactions And Particle Surface Properties., Christian M. White

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Capillary electrophoresis is a well-documented separation technique offering rapid, automated analyses with low-sample volume requirements and broad applicability to biological and inorganic analytes. Here it serves as a platform to investigate the binding affinity between small molecules and bovine serum albumin. It is also used to characterize the surface properties of surface-modified polystyrene particles, including the zeta potential and surface conductance. In both instances, the electrophoretic mobility of the analytes is prioritized through passivation of the surface silanols of the fused silica capillary, which suppresses electroosmotic flow. For the affinity studies, suppression of electroosmotic flow allows for the separation of …
