The Silvicultural And Economic Impact Of Professional Forestry Assistance On Timber Harvests On Non-Industrial, Private Forestland In West Virginia, Stuart A. Moss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Timber harvests conducted on 90 non-industrial, private forestland properties in West Virginia were investigated to determine the effects that professional foresters have on harvest characteristics and residual stand attributes. Harvests were classified based on the type of forester involved with the harvest: 1) consulting/state service foresters representing landowners, 2) industry foresters (procurement or management) representing forest products firms, and 3) no involvement by a professional forester. Consulting foresters removed less basal area, sawtimber volume, and timber value from the stand compared to the other two groups.;Consulting foresters had less of an impact on quadratic mean diameter and displayed a lower …

Controlled Substance, Ron Hollingshead May 2011

Controlled Substance, Ron Hollingshead

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My MFA thesis and supporting exhibition will highlight sculptural work I have created that deals directly or indirectly with circumstances surrounding personal health problems. A recent L4-5 micro-discectomy and the following complications have given much inspiration for my art making. I use this personal narrative as a jumping-off point to create object-based artwork that brings up larger, more universal themes, such as body, disability, pain, and pharmaceutical use. I will explain how the creation of artwork about the process of healing brought with it its own catharsis.

Simulation Factor Screen In Binary Response Models, Minqi Li May 2011

Simulation Factor Screen In Binary Response Models, Minqi Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To eliminate unimportant factors so that the remaining important factors can be further studied in later experimentation, screening experiments (which may be physical or simulation based) are typically performed. This thesis proposes a hybrid statistical procedure for efficient factor screening via simulation experiments. The hybrid procedure is particularly developed for cases where the system response is binary, as opposed to continuous; such a factor-screening procedure does not exist yet in the literature.;The proposed hybrid procedure integrates two screening methods: the sequential factorial design with multivariate sequential test (SFD-MT), which is newly developed in this work, and the modified controlled sequential …

Ezra Ayers Carman: The Gatekeeper Of Memory At Antietam National Battlefield, Richard A. Hulver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ezra Ayers Carman was a veteran of Antietam who was employed by the War Department in the last decade of the nineteenth century to write the official history of that battle. As an historian, Carman acted as a gatekeeper of the official memory at Antietam. He created scaffolding in which veterans could remember tactical/military aspects of their participation in the battle of Antietam. Once his framework for memory was set, Carman opened up extensive correspondence with veterans. He then had the responsibility of sifting through the incoming memories and choosing those he would use to create his official history. The …

Classicism As Foundation In Architecture: Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe's Richard King Mellon Hall Of Science And Michael Graves's Erickson Alumni Center, Elizabeth Stoloff Vehse May 2011

Classicism As Foundation In Architecture: Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe's Richard King Mellon Hall Of Science And Michael Graves's Erickson Alumni Center, Elizabeth Stoloff Vehse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The French Cubist painter and writer Amedee Ozenfant suggested that "Deep in every revolution, discreetly hidden, resides a classicism which is a form of constant." Twentieth-century Modern and Postmodern architecture are no exceptions to this rule. Basic to both movements is the use of classical reference as a foundation for communication with the viewer. This study shows how classical elements and ideas inform the work of Modern and Postmodern architects. Employing classicism as a framework for the holistic reinterpretation of a set of established values (Modernism), or as quotation that is part of a symbolic cultural language (Postmodernism), the architect …

The Politics Of Self-Provisioning In North-Central West Virginia, Autumn Long May 2011

The Politics Of Self-Provisioning In North-Central West Virginia, Autumn Long

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Provisioning one's own food appears to be the next step in the politicization of food production and consumption choices. In contrast to more convenient forms of "ethical consumption" such as buying organic or local, household-level food production requires a great deal of labor-time, knowledge, and social support. But does food self-provisioning elicit or engender a particular political consciousness? Based on six months of fieldwork conducted during the spring and summer of 2010, this research employs qualitative methodologies, including surveys, semistructured interviews, and ethnography, to examine the political, economic, and cultural dynamics of household-level food provisioning amongst a sample of food …

Political Textbooks In A Political World: A Case-Study Of An Estonian History Textbook, J. Berkeley Bentley May 2011

Political Textbooks In A Political World: A Case-Study Of An Estonian History Textbook, J. Berkeley Bentley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the 1990s, the Estonian state was characterized by a relatively rapidly developing political scene. The developments occurred in such a short time period as to render the national history textbook ineffective and thus ill-suited to its perceived use as a tool of socialization into the state, providing an excellent case-study of the limitations of the relationship between textbook and state. This study analyzes the narrative of an Estonian national history textbook produced in the mid 1990s and uses the product of that narrative analysis to map the shifting political winds as represented in the professional rhetoric of the Estonian …

Rethinking Modes Of Political Influence: Catherine De' Medici And Her Female Political Network, Kelly A. Benner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Though previous studies on the political career of Catherine de' Medici have been male-centric, focusing primarily on Catherine's relationships with her sons and male noblemen, it is the contention of this thesis that Catherine amassed a female-based political network during her tenure as Queen mother. Comprised of both her female relatives and the noblewomen that surrounded her at court, Catherine used this system of females to manipulate both domestic and foreign politics. The first chapter of this thesis will focus on Catherine's political purpose for her eldest and youngest daughters, Elisabeth de Valois (consort of Philip II of Spain) and …

During the past twenty years, an increasing percentage of grandparents have assumed the responsibility for raising their grandchildren, and there are currently over 2.5 million custodial grandparents in the United States (Census, 2003). Significant research has examined the effects of caregiving on custodial grandparents, and found that custodial grandparents experience decreased well-being, and report more stressors than their peers (Hayslip, Kaminski & Earnheart, 2005). One area that has not been well-examined is the effect of being raised by grandparents on grandchild well-being, particularly injury prevention. The safety of these home environments is of importance, as unintentional injury is the leading …

My dissertation aligns history, trauma, and race studies to shape a conceptual basis for the race trauma inquiry in order to explore the effects of U.S. racial history on both individuals and communities. I argue that the social, political, and psychological mechanisms by which racism, racial exploitation and exclusion function have a traumatic effect on individuals as well as cultures. This project seeks to map the extent to which race identification, racialized life experience, and racism can be traumatic. By the trauma of race I refer to the psychological, somatic, and cultural effects that individuals and groups suffer as a …

Computational Hybrid Systems For Identifying Prognostic Gene Markers Of Lung Cancer, Ying-Wooi Wan Jan 2011

Computational Hybrid Systems For Identifying Prognostic Gene Markers Of Lung Cancer, Ying-Wooi Wan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lung cancer is the most fatal cancer around the world. Current lung cancer prognosis and treatment is based on tumor stage population statistics and could not reliably assess the risk for developing recurrence in individual patients. Biomarkers enable treatment options to be tailored to individual patients based on their tumor molecular characteristics. To date, there is no clinically applied molecular prognostic model for lung cancer. Statistics and feature selection methods identify gene candidates by ranking the association between gene expression and disease outcome, but do not account for the interactions among genes. Computational network methods could model interactions, but have …

Development Of High-Power Iii-Nitride Light-Emitting Diodes For Solid-State Lighting, Yi Yang Jan 2011

Development Of High-Power Iii-Nitride Light-Emitting Diodes For Solid-State Lighting, Yi Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

White light sources based on III-Nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs) hold great promise for developing energy-efficient solid-state lighting (SSL) technologies. However, the optical output power of InGaN-based green and blue LEDs at high driving currents is limited by quantum efficiency (QE) droop and low light outcoupling efficiencies. The former is a phenomenon that LEDs suffer a decline in quantum efficiency as the driving current increases, and prominently occurs in LEDs with high In contents. Poor light outcoupling is a challenge facing LEDs of all colors. Due to a large contrast of refraction index between nitrides and air, the majority of photons …

Rna In Forensic Science: Novel Techniques For Biological Evidence, Stephanie T. Young Jan 2011

Rna In Forensic Science: Novel Techniques For Biological Evidence, Stephanie T. Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The techniques currently utilized for collecting biological evidence at the scenes of violent crimes such as murder, rape, and kidnapping are employed simply to preserve evidence for future DNA analysis. Although DNA is extremely useful in forensic casework, biological samples possess yet another valuable molecule, RNA. The use of RNA in forensic analysis of samples is currently on the rise. In the past, RNA was thought to degrade much too quickly to be of any benefit to the forensic community. The work presented in this dissertation seeks to demonstrate otherwise. While true that RNA is not as stable as DNA, …

This dissertation examines the transformation of the Bashkir society from a nomadic and semi-nomadic society to a sedentary society under the Russian empire's control from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. In particular, it analyzes inter-ethnic relations and the consequences of these relations for both Bashkirs and other peoples in Bashkiria.;The historical Bashkir lands formed Russia's southeastern frontier for more than two hundred years and the penetration of non-Bashkir groups into the region was a slow and arduous process. On the one hand, the region was an extremely dangerous place: the nomadic groups were quite hostile to the arrival …

Dwindling Into A Wife: Women And The Culture Of Marriage In Britain, 1760-1820, Lori Halvorsen Zerne Jan 2011

Dwindling Into A Wife: Women And The Culture Of Marriage In Britain, 1760-1820, Lori Halvorsen Zerne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines women and marriage ideology in courtship novels of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, specifically novels by Sarah Scott, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen. Instead of focusing on the heroines of these courtship novels, however, this project explores the marginalized female roles that orbit the courtship narrative: the chaperon, the mother-in-law, the governess, and the spinster. These four roles demonstrate the broad scope of female functions and services in the period while also calling into question the ideology that attempts to limit women only to the role of wife. The chaperon reveals the work …

Ubps Unraveled: Genetic Characterization Of Three Ubiquitin Specific Protease Subfamilies In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Crystal M. Goldyn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study investigated the function of three ubiquitin specific protease subfamilies (UBP15-19, UBP12/13 and UBP3/4) in Arabidopsis thaliana via reverse genetic analysis. In the investigation of the UBP15-19 subfamily, T-DNA insertion lines were utilized to determine phenotypic characteristics compared to wild-type individuals, such as reduced inflorescence, leaf, flower and silique size. Phenotypic alterations were also detected that affected development and reproduction. A phylogenetic analysis of this subfamily uncovered three subgroups in the monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, but a single group in the mosses suggested that subgroup evolution began prior to the separation of dicots and monocots but following the divergence …

Adolescents Vs. Adults: Does The Criminal Justice System Punish Youth More Severely Than Adults For The Same Type Of Crime, Sheena L. Bowman Jan 2011

Adolescents Vs. Adults: Does The Criminal Justice System Punish Youth More Severely Than Adults For The Same Type Of Crime, Sheena L. Bowman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Understanding the disparity in the amount of punishment between youth and adults, for violent and non-violent criminal activity, remains a matter of theoretical debate. In the present study, the research employs deterrence and labeling theory, through a life course theoretical framework, to assess the extent to which the punishments for violent and non-violent crimes follow different trajectories. The deterrence theory posits an individual will refrain and deter from future offending if the consequence of the crime committed outweighs the actual crime itself. The labeling theory focuses on the labels applied to an individual, and if that label influences the individual's …

3d Seismic, Attribute-Assisted, Structural Interpretation For Hydrocarbon Exploration And Production: Southwest Pennsylvania, Central Appalachian Basin, Thomas Bradley Donahoe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

High quality 3D seismic data provides critical information vital to the delineation of structural fabrics and depositional facies, and it is therefore important to the development of ideas associated with structural and facies architecture and growth history of the Appalachian foreland basin. Traditional wiggle trace imagery is limited by its dominant frequency and low signal-to-noise ratio; while conventional seismic attributes, such as instantaneous amplitude, RMS and frequency methods are not effective at defining fracture intensity and orientation and spatial and temporal relations between faults and folds which are crucial in achieving the hydrocarbon exploration objective in the basin. To overcome …
