Aircraft Abnormal Conditions Detection, Identification, And Evaluation Using Innate And Adaptive Immune Systems Interaction, Dia Al Azzawi
Aircraft Abnormal Conditions Detection, Identification, And Evaluation Using Innate And Adaptive Immune Systems Interaction, Dia Al Azzawi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Abnormal flight conditions play a major role in aircraft accidents frequently causing loss of control. To ensure aircraft operation safety in all situations, intelligent system monitoring and adaptation must rely on accurately detecting the presence of abnormal conditions as soon as they take place, identifying their root cause(s), estimating their nature and severity, and predicting their impact on the flight envelope.;Due to the complexity and multidimensionality of the aircraft system under abnormal conditions, these requirements are extremely difficult to satisfy using existing analytical and/or statistical approaches. Moreover, current methodologies have addressed only isolated classes of abnormal conditions and a reduced …
Effects Of Dietary Immunomodulation On Parasite Load In Commercial Crossbred Lambs, Rebecca Christine Price
Effects Of Dietary Immunomodulation On Parasite Load In Commercial Crossbred Lambs, Rebecca Christine Price
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multidrug resistant gastrointestinal nematodes have left sheep producers with little options to control the detrimental effects of parasitism on their flocks. Immunomodulation has been used in many autoimmune diseases in an effort to downregulate the immune system and alleviate pathology. However, upregulation of immune responses by use of dietary immunosaccharides may allow parasite susceptible sheep to clear a Haemonchus contortus infection. To test this hypothesis, Dorset-Texel lambs were fed a ration including CelmanaxRTM at 1g/hd/day for one week prior to receiving an experimental infection of 10,000 L3 stage H. contortus larvae; which continued until the completion of the study. Increases …
Keystroke And Touch-Dynamics Based Authentication For Desktop And Mobile Devices, Zahid Ali Syed
Keystroke And Touch-Dynamics Based Authentication For Desktop And Mobile Devices, Zahid Ali Syed
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The most commonly used system on desktop computers is a simple username and password approach which assumes that only genuine users know their own credentials. Once broken, the system will accept every authentication trial using compromised credentials until the breach is detected. Mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, have seen an explosive increase for personal computing and internet browsing. While the primary mode of interaction in such devices is through their touch screen via gestures, the authentication procedures have been inherited from keyboard-based computers, e.g. a Personal Identification Number, or a gesture based password, etc.;This work provides contributions …
Does Cultural Self-Awareness Alter Instructional Design Decisions?, Antoinette Hando
Does Cultural Self-Awareness Alter Instructional Design Decisions?, Antoinette Hando
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project looks at the influence background culture has on instructional designers. Current research supports the hypothesis that background culture affects learning preferences. This study approaches cultural background from the instructional designers' point of view. Using Hofstede's Model of Cultural Dimensions as a tool for understanding how culture influences our expectations in a classroom setting a survey was sent to subjects from various cultures to see if their design style correlated to the ranking given by Hofstede. The results were that background culture influenced the experiences of the participants and could be related to Hofstede's Model of Cultural Dimensions.
Assessment Of Hopelessness In Older Adults: The Development And Initial Validation Of The Hopelessness Inventory For Later Life (Hill), Jeffrey J. Gregg
Assessment Of Hopelessness In Older Adults: The Development And Initial Validation Of The Hopelessness Inventory For Later Life (Hill), Jeffrey J. Gregg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hopelessness has garnered a wealth of empirical support as an important construct in psychological assessment and treatment. It is more than a symptom of major depression; rather, hopelessness has been shown to be a strong risk factor for physical illness, suicidal behavior, and mortality. In fact, hopelessness has been found to be an independent risk factor for these negative outcomes controlling for overall depressive symptoms. Hopelessness is an especially important construct for assessment in later life, as older adults are at an elevated risk of suicide worldwide. Studies have generally supported the use of the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS; Beck …
Numerical Investigation Of The Influence Of Elevated Turbulence Levels On The Cooling Effectiveness Of An Anti-Vortex Hole Geometry, Timothy William Repko
Numerical Investigation Of The Influence Of Elevated Turbulence Levels On The Cooling Effectiveness Of An Anti-Vortex Hole Geometry, Timothy William Repko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A novel film cooling hole geometry for use in gas turbine engines has been investigated numerically by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in a commercial CFD code (STAR-CCM+) with varying turbulence intensity and length scale using the k-o SST turbulence model. Both steady and unsteady results were considered in order to investigate the effects of freestream turbulence intensity and length scale on this novel anti-vortex hole (AVH) concept. The AVH geometry utilizes two side holes, one on each side of the main hole, to attempt to mitigate the vorticity from the jet from the main hole. The AVH concept …
Three Essays On The Political Economy Of Forensic Science, William P. Mcandrew
Three Essays On The Political Economy Of Forensic Science, William P. Mcandrew
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a collection of three essays which explores how public choice and public finance issues affect the provision and production of local public goods. This dissertation looks specifically at the provision of forensic science services. Chapter 2 explores the methodology in measuring how public or private a good is, and finds that ignoring the "zoo effect" can cause upward bias in the measurement of how private a good is. Chapter 3 estimates the cost differences between nationally and locally operated forensic science laboratories, and using an average total cost function, determines that nationally operated laboratories are not more …
Modeling Errors In Biometric Surveillance And De-Duplication Systems, Brian Matthew Decann
Modeling Errors In Biometric Surveillance And De-Duplication Systems, Brian Matthew Decann
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In biometrics-based surveillance and de-duplication applications, the system commonly determines if a given individual has been encountered before. In this dissertation, these applications are viewed as specific instances of a broader class of problems known as Anonymous Identification. Here, the system does not necessarily determine the identity of a person; rather, it merely establishes if the given input biometric data was encountered previously. This dissertation demonstrates that traditional biometric evaluation measures cannot adequately estimate the error rate of an anonymous identification system in general and a de-duplication system in particular. In this regard, the first contribution is the design of …

An Automated Framework For Problem Report Triage In Large-Scale Open Source Problem Repositories, Sean K. Banerjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Issue tracking systems play a critical role in the management and maintenance of software. Developers and users are allowed to submit reports pertaining to observed problems. A human triager must read through each newly submitted report, and determine if it describes an unreported issue (Primary) or an existing issue (Duplicate). If the quality of the report is deemed to be poor (Incomplete), describing an issue with a different software (Invalid), irreproducible (Worksforme), or beyond the scope of the project (Wontfix) it is annotated with the appropriate label. If the report is deemed to describe a new problem, it is assigned …

The Germs Inside Me: Pediatric Patients' Conceptualization Of Illness And Regulation Of Emotions During Hospitalization, Sarah E. Buck
The Germs Inside Me: Pediatric Patients' Conceptualization Of Illness And Regulation Of Emotions During Hospitalization, Sarah E. Buck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The transition into a medical setting can be difficult for children under the age of 18. Previous research has identified a child's capacity to construct accurate representations of illness, in addition to the construction and application of adaptive strategies to modify emotional arousal, as significant predictors of successful adjustment to a medical environment. Preexisting research has neglected to investigate the constructs of illness conceptualization and regulatory systems of emotions. Using a sample of 26 pediatric patients and 26 adult informants, the current study explored the complex relationship between emotional regulation and the conceptualization of illness among children, from the ages …
An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio
An Evidence Based Web Intervention To Facilitate Nurse Practitioner Participation In The Policy Making Process Related To Scope Of Practice, Toni Dichiacchio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Historically nurses have been strongly engaged in the political process, however in recent decades the profession has moved away from the policy arena. Without political engagement, issues that are important to the nursing profession are not addressed timely, if at all. One such issue is that of full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Well over 100 studies have been completed over the past 40 years showing the safe and quality care APRNs provide independently. Numerous well-respected, non-nursing organizations support the removal of state laws that impede the ability of APRNs to practice to the full extent of …
Stability Of Methane-Ethane-Propane Mixed Gas Hydrates Under Deep Water Conditions, Srinath Chowdary Velaga
Stability Of Methane-Ethane-Propane Mixed Gas Hydrates Under Deep Water Conditions, Srinath Chowdary Velaga
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methane hydrates are globally distributed in sediments along the continental margins and potentially contain more energy than all fossil fuel reserves. However, methane is also a potential greenhouse gas which could play a major role in global climate change. Understanding the stability of gas hydrates can help us to understand their role in the climate change. Three main factors affect the stability of hydrates: Temperature (T), Pressure (P) and composition. Hydrates become unstable when they are exposed to pressures and temperatures outside the hydrate stability zone (HSZ) in a process commonly called dissociation. However, hydrates can also become unstable even …
Modeling Of Outer Radiation Belt Electron Scattering Due To Spatial And Spectral Properties Of Ulf Waves, Mattias Tornquist
Modeling Of Outer Radiation Belt Electron Scattering Due To Spatial And Spectral Properties Of Ulf Waves, Mattias Tornquist
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The research presented in this thesis covers wave-particle interactions for relativistic (0.5-10 MeV) electrons in Earth's outer radiation belt (r = 3-7 RE, or L-shells: L = 3-7) interacting with magnetospheric Pc-5 (ULF) waves. This dissertation focuses on ideal models for short and long term electron energy and radial position scattering caused by interactions with ULF waves.;We use test particle simulations to investigate these wave-particle interactions with ideal wave and magnetic dipole fields. We demonstrate that the wave-particle phase can cause various patterns in phase space trajectories, i.e. local acceleration, and that for a global electron population, for all initial …
Immune Related Gene Expression Of Parasite-Resistant Sheep During A Haemonchus Contortus Infection, Karen Nicole Sommers
Immune Related Gene Expression Of Parasite-Resistant Sheep During A Haemonchus Contortus Infection, Karen Nicole Sommers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is a top health concern for sheep producers worldwide as traditional means of treatment are becoming less effective. Haemonchus contortus is of particular interest because it feeds on blood, causing significant pathological problems in the host. Certain breeds of sheep, like St. Croix, are more naturally resistant to parasitism. However, the underlying mechanisms that result in resistance are not fully understood. The following two experiments evaluated qPCR differential gene expression during the first ten days of a challenge H. contortus infection from lymph node and abomasal tissues. Experiment 1 evaluated 24 St. Croix hair lambs and 24 …

Seismic Attribute-Assisted Structure Analysis Of The Mackay Dome Transpressional System, Bighorn Basin, Southern Montana: Evidence For Reservoir Compartmentalization, Abigail Lauryn Morris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Mackay dome field is found in southern Montana, in the northern most section of the Bighorn basin. It is characterized by a transpressional positive flower structure that lies above the left lateral Nye-Bowler lineament. The main reservoir is the Cretaceous Greybull sandstone, which is sourced by the lower Permian Phosphoria. The reservoir has been divided into two main compartments, but complicated faulting could divide it into a more segmented reservoir. The seismic attributes most extreme curvature, variance, and ant tracking were applied to the Greybull reservoir in order to delineate bounding and segmenting faults of the reservoir. These attributes …
A Study Of Dynamical And Emission Variabilities In Pulsars, Andrew D. Seymour
A Study Of Dynamical And Emission Variabilities In Pulsars, Andrew D. Seymour
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pulsars are rapidly rotating highly magnetized neutron stars thought to have been formed in the core-collapse supernova of massive stars. Ever since their discovery, pulsars have shown complex behaviors. This is certainly true for their emission mechanism, which is still not fully understood. This is primarily because of the abrupt changes that appear in the pulse profile. Recent discoveries have shown that these emission changes effect the spin dynamics, particularly the spin-down rate. This indicates that pulsar emissions are even more complex than previously thought. The goal of this thesis is to apply new analysis techniques to help shed light …
Evaluation Of Asphalt Pavements Construction Practice In West Virginia, Masoud Seyed Mohammad Ghavami
Evaluation Of Asphalt Pavements Construction Practice In West Virginia, Masoud Seyed Mohammad Ghavami
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Construction practice is a key factor in building high quality pavement. Unfortunately failure and distresses frequently develop shortly after construction. These distresses may be due to the contractors failing to follow the guidelines and specifications. Monitoring pavement construction provides information for evaluating contractors' practices relative to the best practices as documented in various training courses. Accordingly, the West Virginia Department of Highways (WVDOH) decided to review construction practices. The WVDOH hired 4 co-ops during summer 2012 and 2 co-ops during summer 2013 to document asphalt pavement construction projects. The co-ops were assigned to observe and record pavement construction practices. Observations …

Psychological Measures To Predict Serious Prison Violence, Allison M. Schenk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With 2.2 million adults incarcerated throughout the United States (Glaze & Herberman, 2013), prisons are crowded, volatile environments susceptible to violence. Prior research has identified demographic and criminal variables that consistently predict prison violence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of psychological variables to predict prison violence among 180 inmates from a state prison in West Virginia. The psychological variables studied included history of mental illness and results from psychological assessments (Beta-III, MMPI-2-RF, TCU Drug Screen II). Using a logistic regression analysis, history of mental illness and the MMPI-2-RF scale of Psychoticism accurately predicted violent inmates …
Investigation Of Pm Formation And Evolution In Plumes Emitted By Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles: Wind Tunnel Study, Daniele Littera
Investigation Of Pm Formation And Evolution In Plumes Emitted By Heavy-Duty Diesel Vehicles: Wind Tunnel Study, Daniele Littera
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stringent emission regulations have forced drastic technological improvements in diesel aftertreatment systems, particularly in reducing Particulate Matter (PM) emissions. Studies that have led to these technological advancements were made in controlled laboratory environments and are not representative of real-world emissions from these engines or vehicles. In addition, formation and evolution of PM from these engines are extremely sensitive to overall changes in the dilution process. In light of this, the study of the exhaust plume of a heavy-duty diesel vehicle operated inside a subsonic environmental wind tunnel can give us an idea of the dilution process and the representative emissions …
Investigating Feeding Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And/Or Soy Protein Isolate To Female Pck Rats On Polycystic Kidney Disease And Related Complications, Kaitlin Hope Maditz
Investigating Feeding Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And/Or Soy Protein Isolate To Female Pck Rats On Polycystic Kidney Disease And Related Complications, Kaitlin Hope Maditz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by multiple benign cysts along the epithelial lining of the kidneys. As PKD progresses, cyst growth increases kidney volume, decreases renal function, and may eventually lead to end stage renal disease. In addition to renal manifestations, PKD patients are at risk of complications that include bone loss and polycystic liver disease (PLD). Currently, no genetic therapy or effective pharmacological treatments exist. Therefore, dietary intervention offers a potentially efficacious, cost-effective, and safe therapeutic option for PKD and PKD-related complications. Offering dietary treatment to attenuate PKD disease progression has the potential to improve …

The objective of the Cafe Nudge Project was to assess the cafeteria environment and the flow of students through the lunch-line to determine characteristics that could be enhanced to encourage healthy food choices in three Appalachian high schools. The Center for Behavioral Economics and Child Nutrition Program (BEN Center) has collectively conducted prior research on this topic and has coined the term "Smarter Lunchrooms Movement" for improving cafeteria environments. These improvements included increased fresh fruit and vegetable consumption, increased consumption of low-fat white milk, and decreased consumption of high-fat and high-calorie foods. This study was a two-part observation. In the …
Sampling The Radio Transient Universe: Studies Of Pulsars And The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Jayanth Chennamangalam
Sampling The Radio Transient Universe: Studies Of Pulsars And The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, Jayanth Chennamangalam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The transient radio universe is a relatively unexplored area of astronomy, offering a variety of phenomena, from solar and Jovian bursts, to flare stars, pulsars, and bursts of Galactic and potentially even cosmological origin. Among these, perhaps the most widely studied radio transients, pulsars are fast-spinning neutron stars that emit radio beams from their magnetic poles. In spite of over 40 years of research on pulsars, we have more questions than answers on these exotic compact objects, chief among them the nature of their emission mechanism. Nevertheless, the wealth of phenomena exhibited by pulsars make them one of the most …
Untangling Compact And Diffuse Ionized Emission Toward Galactic Hii Regions, Logan A. Hough
Untangling Compact And Diffuse Ionized Emission Toward Galactic Hii Regions, Logan A. Hough
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
HII regions are clouds of ionized hydrogen gas surrounding B0- and O-type stars. The ionized hydrogen in these regions emits both radio recombination line (RRL) and also thermal radio continuum. Diffuse ionized hydrogen, known as the 'Warm Ionized Medium' (WIM) also exists in the Galaxy. The WIM also emits RRLs and thermal radio continuum. Previous observation of compact \hii regions found two RRL components for many sources, one from the \hii region and the others from the WIM. By observing off-target positions sampling only the diffuse emission, we discerned the correct source velocities for 93 out of 116 HII regions …

Hydraulic fracturing is one of the most common and important stimulation techniques used in oil and gas industry to create high conductivity flow paths for hydrocarbons to flow from the reservoir matrix to the wellbore. Hydraulic fracturing is a complex process including different physical and chemical phenomena. It involves rock mechanics for the part of fracture propagation and involves fluid mechanics for the part of slurry injection, fluid flow, fluid leak-off, proppant transport, proppant settling and interaction between fluid and proppant particles. In this study, the focus is on fluid and proppant motion within hydraulic fractures. The effectiveness of hydraulic …
Early School Leaving: A Narrative Inquiry Of The School Dropout, John E. Stallings Jr.
Early School Leaving: A Narrative Inquiry Of The School Dropout, John E. Stallings Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the field of education, student performance has become an integral component when determining the effectiveness of schools, levels of student engagement, and a measure of the learning that is occurring in schools. In particular, certain criteria have been identified as appropriate measures for monitoring the effectiveness of school systems, individual school programs, and teacher merit. Included in these specific areas to be monitored are graduation and or dropout rates. While these have become a part of the major focus of those monitoring the effectiveness of schools across the country, it seems that little has been done to investigate what …
Integrating The Lamodel And Armps Programs (Armps-Lam), Peng Zhang
Integrating The Lamodel And Armps Programs (Armps-Lam), Peng Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Over the years, the various versions of the ARMPS and the LaModel programs have been widely used in the U.S. coal fields. In a recent deep-cover database analysis, LaModel was found to more accurately classify a small deep-cover database than ARMPS. However, the LaModel analysis of each case study required several days to complete, as compared to a requirement of only several minutes for each ARMPS analysis. If the LaModel analysis of an ARMPS-type mine design, could be made as easily and quickly as an ARMPS analysis and calibrated against a large database, the potential exists to improve the quality …
Co2 Dissociation Using The Versatile Atmospheric Dielectric Barrier Discharge Experiment (Vader), Michael Allen Lindon
Co2 Dissociation Using The Versatile Atmospheric Dielectric Barrier Discharge Experiment (Vader), Michael Allen Lindon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As of 2013, the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) estimates that the world emits approximately 36 trillion metric tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere every year. These large emissions have been correlated to global warming trends that have many consequences across the globe, including glacial retraction, ocean acidification and increased severity of weather events. With green technologies still in the infancy stage, it can be expected that CO2 emissions will stay this way for along time to come. Approximately 41% of the emissions are due to electricity production, which pump out condensed forms of CO2. This danger …
