Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Holes And Ion Beams In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre Jan 2018

Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Holes And Ion Beams In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Presented here are direct, spatially resolved measurements of the spontaneous formation of a steady-state, ion accelerating structure and an ion hole in the plume of an expanding, low- pressure plasma. Ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) measurements, obtained with laser induced fluorescence, are taken parallel and perpendicular to the background magnetic field in an argon helicon plasma. The parallel IVDFs show an ion beam with v ≈ 8,000 m/s flowing downstream and confined to the center of the discharge. The ion beam is measurable for tens of centimeters along the expansion axis before the LIF signal fades, likely a result of …

Assessment Of Surgical Guide Accuracy Utilizing A Digital Workflow, Nicole Irene Andreini Jan 2018

Assessment Of Surgical Guide Accuracy Utilizing A Digital Workflow, Nicole Irene Andreini

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Objectives: To determine the accuracy of placing implants using a digital workflow. Variables were compared to see if there was an effect on implant position accuracy. These included bone level (BL) versus bone level tapered (BLT) implants, positioning of implants adjacent to tooth support versus further across an edentulous ridge, and impact of the surgical guide requiring adjustment to fully seat. Furthermore, two methods of post-operative assessment were compared to evaluate consistency of each approach.;Methods: A typical work up for digital implant planning was performed on a sectioned pig jaw. The DICOM CBCT file and IOS STL file were imported …

Using Artistic Process To Provide Outlets Of Communication, Understanding, And Healing To Improve The Well Being Of Selected Learners, Sarah Allen Jan 2018

Using Artistic Process To Provide Outlets Of Communication, Understanding, And Healing To Improve The Well Being Of Selected Learners, Sarah Allen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Public schools in America follow a carefully structured pattern tied directly to the societies and cultures from within. While this structure may create a positive and familiar learning environment for some, others who are unfamiliar with the societal and cultural norms within public school structures, may be left behind. Some learners have simple language barriers that exclude them from activities as well as others during the school day; some choose silence out of fear or embarrassment from unknown circumstances; while others are labeled as Special Education and are not able to speak to others verbally as a "normal" child would. …

The Semantics Of Spanish Compounding: An Analysis Of Nn Compounds In The Parallel Architecture, Luis Miguel Toquero Perez Jan 2018

The Semantics Of Spanish Compounding: An Analysis Of Nn Compounds In The Parallel Architecture, Luis Miguel Toquero Perez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Noun-Noun compounds (NN) are a concatenation of two nouns that function as a single unit both morphosyntactically and semantically. One of the main challenges that a study of NN compounding faces is their semantics, and more precisely, identifying the implied semantic relations that hold between the two elements. One of the most recent frameworks that has been proposed to account for the semantic relations between the modifier and head in NN compounds is Jackendoff's (2009, 2016) basic functions model within the Parallel Architecture framework. In this model, a semantic relation between the head and modifier is established by using an …

Mean-Swap Variance, Portfolio Theory And Asset Pricing, Jhan Wang Jan 2018

Mean-Swap Variance, Portfolio Theory And Asset Pricing, Jhan Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary focus of this dissertation is a new risk measure, Swap Variance (SwV), and its applications to expected utility maximization, portfolio theory, and capital asset pricing models (CAPM) with loss aversion and gain preference. Superior to the classical mean-variance (MV) model, the mean-swap variance (MSwV) efficiency is consistent with expected utility maximization for all concave utility without any restriction on the form of either utility function or return distributions. Specifically, the MSwV efficiency is necessary and sufficient to the second-degree stochastic dominance (SSD). Thus, the SSD optimization can be consistently replicated by the SwV minimization for given means. The …

Dietary Intake And Body Composition Changes During A 12-Week Weight Loss Trial In Middle-Aged And Older Men, Allison Marie Morris Jan 2018

Dietary Intake And Body Composition Changes During A 12-Week Weight Loss Trial In Middle-Aged And Older Men, Allison Marie Morris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Middle-aged adults suffer from the highest rates of obesity in the nation. Obesity is not only a risk factor for cardiovascular-related chronic disease, it is also associated with decreased functional status in aging populations. Depletion of lean mass is a concerning consequence of intentional weight loss. However, efforts to attenuate loss of lean mass with weight loss are often limited to older adults. Understanding body composition changes that occur during intentional weight loss and factors to limit the loss of lean mass during weight loss in middle aged adults are needed reduce and prevent adverse outcomes in old age. The …

Personality, Sleep, And Mortality, Shantel Spears Jan 2018

Personality, Sleep, And Mortality, Shantel Spears

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Personality traits and sleep are associated with health and longevity; however, no investigation has examined whether sleep is a pathway linking personality to mortality risk. Thus, we tested this effect across a 20-year mortality follow-up period in the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) cohort (N = 3,253; M age = 47.03 years, SD = 12.39, range = 20-75), using proportional hazards in a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. Openness was the only trait predictor of death risk. Daytime sleepiness and short and long sleep duration also emerged as predictors of mortality risk. We found indirect effects for neuroticism, …
