A Grid-Based Approach To Localization For Robotics Applications, Larry Carlton Reaves Jan 2017

A Grid-Based Approach To Localization For Robotics Applications, Larry Carlton Reaves

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

From robotic probes on Mars to self driving cars here on Earth, the process of moving around the planet begins with localization. Before an autonomous vehicle can decide where to go, it must first determine where it is and what obstacles may be nearby. By using various sensors, an autonomous platform can gather the data it needs to identify its position and orientation within its surroundings. This position and orientation is known as the pose of the robot. In this report, we will review a particle filter based algorithm for localizing an autonomous mining robot in a known 2D map. …

Complexity Aware C-Ran Scheduling For Ldpc Codes Over Bec, Kyle Gordon Whetzel Jan 2017

Complexity Aware C-Ran Scheduling For Ldpc Codes Over Bec, Kyle Gordon Whetzel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Effective transmission of data over a noisy wireless channel is a vital part of today's high speed technology driven society. In a wireless cell network, information is sent from mobile users to base stations. The information being transmitted is protected by error-control codes. In a conventional architecture the signal processing, including error-control decoding, is performed locally at each base station. Recently, a new architecture has emerged called Centralized Radio Access Network (C-RAN), which involves the centralized processing of the signals in a computing cloud. Using a computing cloud allows computational resources to be pooled, which improves utilization and efficiency. When …

Impact Of Formation Damage Due To Perforation On Well Productivity, Elmouzemill Abrahim Adam Jan 2017

Impact Of Formation Damage Due To Perforation On Well Productivity, Elmouzemill Abrahim Adam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Formation Damage can be defined as any reduction in near wellbore permeability which results from drilling, completion, production, injection, attempted stimulation or any other well intervention. In the majority of completions, once the reservoir has been drilled, production casing or a liner is run into the well and cemented in place. To provide the communication between the reservoir and the wellbore, it is necessary to perforate through the walls of the cemented casing or a liner and penetrate into the formation. Currently horizontal well bores completed with extensive perforation are conducted as several clusters along the well bore. Perforation can …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

ABSTRACT Analysis of Multi-Resolution Data Aggregation using Push-assisted Random Walks in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) Sowmya Srinivasapura Devaraja Data Aggregation in Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) has proven challenging because of changing topology. Structure-based models like tree-based, cluster-based and chain-based have high maintenance cost. In earlier works, different forms of biased random walks have been verified to be effective without need for structure maintenance. The key idea in the protocol was to use one or more tokens that are circulated using biased random walks to effectively compute the data aggregation. One such protocol is EZ-AG that uses "Push-assisted Self-Repelling Random Walks". …

This study evaluates workflows and systems that have been installed to change the enormous amounts of data, such as temperature, flow rate and pressure, into practicable information to enhance field performance and development. In addition to using data from real cases from intelligent fields (I-Field) …

Analyzing Discovery Latency In Mobile Networks, Saud Alramzi Jan 2017

Analyzing Discovery Latency In Mobile Networks, Saud Alramzi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Duty cycle is important in wireless sensor and mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) to extend their lifetime. Duty cycling in wireless networks lets the nodes wake up with infrequent fixed periods, based on pre-determined parameters. On the other hand, neighbor discovery is the process by which nodes learn about the neighbors. Nodes can use radio communications to discover other neighbors. Timely, neighbor discovery is crucial for routing. But, neighbor discovery becomes more challenging in energy-constrained, mobile environment with duty cycled nodes where a node may not know whether any neighbors are present, and what duty cycle those neighbors might operate at. …

Efficacy Of Self-Directed Exposure Using Smart Phone Technology: First Versus Third Person Perspective, Matthew C. Arias Jan 2017

Efficacy Of Self-Directed Exposure Using Smart Phone Technology: First Versus Third Person Perspective, Matthew C. Arias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Exposure therapy, including its self-directed forms, is effective for treatment of specific phobias. Nevertheless, there are issues with patient adherence in the use of exposure therapy, including its self-directed formats. Technological advancements, as with smartphones, may improve adherence to self-directed exposure therapy, perhaps due to exposure stimuli being more readily accessible. Thus, there is a need to examine how presenting phobic material on a smartphone might promote increased adherence in conducting self-directed exposure. Additionally, exposure can incorporate phobic material from different perspectives (i.e., first-person or third-person), which is one factor that may impact treatment effectiveness. Participants (N = 36) were …

Civil Religion And Ontological Threat, Matthew R. Arp Jan 2017

Civil Religion And Ontological Threat, Matthew R. Arp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dyadic conflict research within international relations is largely reliant on the analysis of differences in regime or leadership characteristics as a catalyst for conflict. This dissertation challenges traditional scholarship through the introduction of a unique approach that examines more fundamental differences between states. These fundamental historical and cultural differences, which are enshrined in a states' civil religion, offer insights into the behavior of states during crisis. The three primary questions of this dissertation are the following: What role does societal norms and cultural values have in threat perception? Why do states practice restraint in some crises and escalation of belligerence …

Electrical Percolation Threshold Of Magnetostrictive Inclusions In Piezo-Electric Matrix Composite As A Function Of Relative Particle Size, Antoine Joseph Bedard Jr. Jan 2017

Electrical Percolation Threshold Of Magnetostrictive Inclusions In Piezo-Electric Matrix Composite As A Function Of Relative Particle Size, Antoine Joseph Bedard Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Magnetoelectric (ME) composites can be produced by placing magnetostrictive particles in a piezoelectric-matrix. Ferrite magnetostrictive (H) particles, if allowed to percolate, can short the potential difference generated in the piezoelectric (E) phase. This work focuses on modeling an ME composite as bi-disperse hard shells with the magnetostrictive H particles scaled to 100nm where particle dynamics is used to explore relationships among relative particle size, particle affinity, and electrical percolation with the goal of maximizing the percolation threshold. It was found that the two factors that increase the H to H intra-phase percolation threshold are: (1) the size of H particles …

Diffusion Or Dissent: Examining International Family Planning Frames And Domestic Policy Divergence, Gillian C. Beach Jan 2017

Diffusion Or Dissent: Examining International Family Planning Frames And Domestic Policy Divergence, Gillian C. Beach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores how issue framing within an international advocacy movement influences and is influenced by the framing of the same issue within politically differentiated regimes, and examines this question through an analysis of the international family planning movement. Existing work on both policy diffusion and international advocacy presents strong evidence that the international community has a powerful effect on the framing and development of domestic policy. However, there is room for refinement of the literature in addressing how international actors affect policy trajectories within dissenting regimes---that is, regimes that espouse explicitly anti-Western ideologies, but which are nevertheless active in …

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Vapor Exposure On Body Weight, Appetite, And Metabolism, Matthew J. Breit

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cigarette smokers weigh less than non-smokers and gain weight upon smoking cessation. Electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) have been used as a smoking cessation tool among many, however, their effects on metabolism, appetite, and energy balance are virtually unknown. This study compares the effects of chronic E-cig vapor exposure on body mass, food intake, metabolism, and body composition in mice. We hypothesized that E-cig exposure would elicit similar changes on body mass, body composition, food intake, and metabolic and appetite-regulating markers as conventional cigarettes (i.e. 3R4F reference cigarette). Female C57BL/6 mice were exposed to filtered room air (n=15), mainstream smoke from 3R4F …

The Costume Design Process For "Courtship" And "Valentine's Day", Lauren E. Brennan Jan 2017

The Costume Design Process For "Courtship" And "Valentine's Day", Lauren E. Brennan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Courtship and Valentine's Day are the last two installments in a trilogy of one act plays by Horton Foote. The plays depict the everyday life of a family between the years of 1915 and 1917 in Harrison, Texas. Both Courtship and Valentine's Day are examples of "slice of life" realism. However, this slice of life is from a vantage point, as Horton Foote "wrote about [the] period, but not from [the] period" (McGonigle, Initial Design Meeting).;Above all else, the Director stressed that the purpose of both plays should be to support the journey towards finding and defining home. In an …

The Effect Of A Missing At Random Missing Data Mechanism On A Single Layer Artificial Neural Network With A Sigmoidal Activation Function And The Use Of Multiple Imputation As A Correction, Taron Dick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Missing data is a common problem encountered in statistical analysis. However, little is known about how bias inducing missing at random missing data mechanisms affect predictive model performance measures such as sensitivity, specificity, error rate, ROC curves, and AUC. I investigate the effect of missing at random missing data mechanisms on a single layer artificial neural network with a sigmoidal activation function, equivalent to a binary logistic regression. Binary logistic regression is frequently used in health research and so it is a logical starting point to understand the effects of missing data on statistical learning models that could be used …

Evaluation Of Shared Space To Reduce Traffic Congestion: A Case Study On West Virginia University's Downtown Campus, Colin Frosch Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Shared Space To Reduce Traffic Congestion: A Case Study On West Virginia University's Downtown Campus, Colin Frosch

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pedestrian and vehicle interactions often lead to conflicts that bring about safety, traffic congestion, and priority or right of way issues. Common methods used in the past to combat said issues have largely relied on the principle of separating the motions of pedestrians and vehicles by means of bridges, tunnels, signals, and access restrictions. A different approach known as share space aims to solve the same problems with a less structured and defined environment which instead places more reliance on human interaction and perception. Although it has been used in multiple scenarios across Europe with success, instances of shared spaces …
