Role Of Estrogen And Boron In Calcium Metabolism And Eggshell Formation In The Chicken., Xuezhong Qin
Role Of Estrogen And Boron In Calcium Metabolism And Eggshell Formation In The Chicken., Xuezhong Qin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Ca supply for eggshell formation depends on the rate of calcium transport in both the intestine and shell gland. Although estrogen (E{dollar}\\sb2){dollar} is known to play an important role in the regulation of Ca transport in these tissues, the mechanism responsible for this effect has not been elucidated. Study 1, 2, and 3 were thus conducted to determine the role of E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} in the regulation of Ca-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase (AP) in both the shell gland and intestine of immature chicks. In the shell gland, E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} treatment increased the Vmax of Ca-ATPase without increasing the affinity of Ca-ATPase for …
Transcendent Teacher-Learner Relationships: A Vision For Pursuit., Hunter O'Hara
Transcendent Teacher-Learner Relationships: A Vision For Pursuit., Hunter O'Hara
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Mounting outcry for improvement in education gives rise to consideration of learning phenomena that soar above the symptoms of an ailing system. Transcendent teacher-learner relationships, defined as spontaneously occurring ones that exceed traditional roles of interaction, result in turning point encounters for one or both relators. Having had such an encounter, the individual is never again quite the same, as perceptions are changed and life goals are altered. Teacher and learner move beyond the historical preoccupation with the learner's receptive need. Such relationships are never assigned, but instead they require two self-motivated relators who share a biographically oriented connection. This …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The study evaluated the panegyrical claims for high school-based community service programs. Four high school programs from three different states were selected to represent public, private-parochial, single and mixed gender, urban, suburban, and rural orientations. A repeated measure quantitative research design was developed and implemented as well as a qualitative study involving student and teacher/coordinator interviews. A survey instrument consisting of three scales--Social Isolation, Powerlessness, and Political Efficacy--was administered to experimental groups of student volunteers in each of four schools before and after programs involving student participation in community activities. The time periods between pre and post-tests ranged from one …
Acquisition Of Word Concept In Two Kindergarten Classrooms., Elwin Leonard Dickerson
Acquisition Of Word Concept In Two Kindergarten Classrooms., Elwin Leonard Dickerson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study explored how differing teaching methodologies affect word concept development during the first semester of kindergarten. Comparing fourteen kindergarten students matched on age, concepts about print, cognitive level and home factors in kindergartens differing in teaching philosophy, the researcher administered tasks to assess development of concept of word. Those tasks structured to assess word concept development, were administered every other week. Clay's "Concepts About Print" (CAP) task provided the pre- and post test assessment. The seven students exposed to a holistic philosophy and seven students exposed to a skill building philosophy demonstrated no significant differences when their word concept …

Rapid Pyrolysis Of Eastern And Western Oil Shales In An Entrained Reactor., Guo-Qing Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An entrained reactor system (LFER) has been used to study the rapid pyrolysis kinetics for both eastern (New Albany) and western (Colorado) oil shales. Under the condition of high heating rate, a fundamental understanding of the processes influencing oil production and product quality/composition was obtained. Flow visualization and temperature characterization in the LFER were conducted to provide a critical laminar flow and isothermal reaction zone. Calibration curves depicting the flow regimes confirmed that the existing inlet and reactor design can be operated without particle dispersion caused by turbulence. A thermocouple tree was successfully utilized to identify the conditions necessary to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived preferred brain hemispheric processing of West Virginia public school principals and their self-perceived leadership styles. Seventy-five respondents completed the Herrmann Brain Dominance Profile, the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, and a demographics sheet. Data were analyzed using the General Linear Model of the Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS). Chi Square analyses at the 0.05 alpha level were used to test two directional hypotheses that guided this study. Both hypotheses were confirmed. Public school principals in West Virginia who perceived themselves as preferring mental processes that are predominantly left brain hemispheric perceived …
Financing Small-Scale Rural Industrial Entrepreneurs In Developing Countries: Identification Of The General Characteristics Of Micro-Credit Lending Schemes., Anthony Ikechukwu Akubue
Financing Small-Scale Rural Industrial Entrepreneurs In Developing Countries: Identification Of The General Characteristics Of Micro-Credit Lending Schemes., Anthony Ikechukwu Akubue
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Small-scale rural industrial entrepreneurs have over the years been denied formal credit for reasons ranging from bad credit risks to lack of collateral. The micro-credit lending scheme is an innovative credit system designed to enhance the extension of credit to this neglected rural clientele. The literature suggests that existing micro-credit lending programs have made more credit available to the small-scale rural industrial entrepreneur than was the case before their emergence. It was, therefore, the problem of this study to identify, describe, and validate the general characteristics of indigenous micro-credit lending schemes in developing countries and to determine their importance to …
On The Threshold Of The Ever-Returning Past: Djuna Barnes' "Nightwood" As A Labyrinth Of The Liminal Grotesque., Virginia Ellen Leonard
On The Threshold Of The Ever-Returning Past: Djuna Barnes' "Nightwood" As A Labyrinth Of The Liminal Grotesque., Virginia Ellen Leonard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nightwood is a novel of life lived in the interstices of time and space by marginal characters, epitomized by the night people of Vienna, Paris, and Berlin. These epicenters of the cultural revolutions of the early twentieth century drew expatriates from all over the world. This novel captures the essence of marginality in images of the grotesque, the most appropriate symbol of the liminal life and the most useful art form to consider when investigating the complex style of a simple tale. In consequence, I use an interdisciplinary approach, combining art history of the grotesque, analysis of major motif patterns …

Studies Of Nonlinear Dynamics In Chemical Systems., John Steven Reckley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This work reports on three projects undertaken with the aim of learning more about complex behavior such as multiple steady states in a CSTR and traveling waves and spatial structures in unstirred solutions. Bistability in the permanganate-oxalate system was studied spectrophotometrically and computationally using a CSTR in a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Absorbance of the solution was monitored as a function of flow rate. The concentrations of several manganese containing species in each of the steady states at a specific flow rate were determined using multi-component analysis. A four-variable empirical rate law model and computational results were presented. An experimental investigation of …

Kinetics Of Drug Release From The Polylactic Acid Microcapsules Prepared By A Solvent Partition Method., Nilsuwan Leelarasamee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A solvent partition technique of microencapsulation, utilizing an apparatus designed to provide a continuous injection of a drug-polymer preparation into a flowing mineral oil system, has been developed via the preparation of hydrocortisone-polylactic acid microcapsules. Using this method, microcapsules of controlled particle size distribution and drug loading were prepared with good reproducibility. Dissolution studies further showed that microcapsules having the same drug loading and particle size distribution exhibited the same rate of release. The drug release profiles, obtained in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer at 37 C, showed a biphasic drug release pattern denoting a fast first-stage and a slow second-stage …
Effects Of Alloxan-Induced Diabetes Mellitus On Murine Salivary Glands: A Morphological, Histochemical, And Statistical Study (Kidney), Nancy G. Dixon
Effects Of Alloxan-Induced Diabetes Mellitus On Murine Salivary Glands: A Morphological, Histochemical, And Statistical Study (Kidney), Nancy G. Dixon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Morphological and carbohydrate histochemical changes were studied in the major salivary glands of male and female mice rendered experimentally diabetic with alloxan. This model presents a hypoinsulinemic, potentially ketotic diabetic syndrome which is non-insulin requiring. Since mouse submandibular gland sexual dimorphism is known to be affected by androgens and diabetes is known to have a hypogonadic effect, the salivary glands of male diabetic mice were compared with unafflicted littermates as well as with diabetic animals supplemented with testosterone or insulin. There was evidence of demasculinization of the submandibular gland in the diabetic male; diameters and granule content of granular ducts …
John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt
John Dewey's Concept Of The Child., Charlotte Nelson Landvoigt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
From an investigation of the entire published works of John Dewey, as well as much of his personal correspondence, this dissertation described and analyzed Dewey's concept of the child. It was discovered that Dewey's concept evolved through interactions with his family and, to a lesser extent, his social milieu. Despite some inconsistencies in his writings about the child, arising primarily from his attempts to persuade his audience to make societal changes benefiting the child, Dewey developed a cohesive, comprehensive concept--a concept which emphasized a view of the child as an active, growing being. Ten aspects of the child were examined …
Lactate Dehydrogenase And Peroxidase In Mammary Cells, Normal And Cancerous, With Special Reference To Progestin Effects On Lactate Dehydrogenase In The Human Breast Cancer Cell Line T47d., Rodney Dale Hagley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The steroid hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are known to have regulatory functions in normal mammary tissue and in some tumors of the breast. We report here the occurrence, partial purification, and preliminary characterization of peroxidase from bovine mammary tissue, and the presence and steroid hormone influences on peroxidase and lactate dehydrogenase in human breast cancer cells in tissue culture. Six human breast cancer cell lines and one human breast cell line derived from normal epithelial cells have been assayed for the presence and estrogen-inducibility of peroxidase and lactate dehydrogenase. Peroxidase was absent in four of seven human breast cell lines …

Safety Of Front-End Loaders Evaluated By Workload And Performance (Simulator, Subjective Reporting, Physiological, Reaction Time, Vigilance)., Mehran Lotfi Najafabadi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The safety of front-end loaders should be given the highest priority in research since they have been involved in 27% of fatal accidents and 22.4% of non-fatal accidents in surface mining, second only to trucks. Operator safety was considered to depend on the workload, environmental stressors and the subsequent deterioration in performance. Operator workload intensity was established by analyzing tasks and stressors in each segment of the cycle. Deterioration in performance was measured by increases in reaction time and by frequency of errors. A physical simulator was designed and constructed to generate operational task demands in a controlled laboratory environment. …
The Role Of The Glucocorticoids And Insulin In The Regulation Of Hepatic Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Deborah J. Stumpo
The Role Of The Glucocorticoids And Insulin In The Regulation Of Hepatic Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Deborah J. Stumpo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of my research project was to examine how insulin and the glucocorticoids, alone, and in combination, regulate hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) at the level of functional mRNA coding for G6PD. The model system I utilized for these studies was primary cultures of adult rat liver parenchymal cells. These cells were maintained in a serum-free and chemically defined medium so that direct effects of added hormones on the hepatocytes could be ascertained. Dexamethasone (Dex), a synthetic glucocorticoid, when added alone did not have an effect on G6PD activity. Insulin caused about a 1.6-fold increase in enzyme activity, and when …
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
World And Being In Wordsworth's "Prelude" (Phenomenology)., James Preston Hissom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study approaches the problem of the relation of man and nature in William Wordsworth's The Prelude from the phenomenological perspective developed in Martin Heidegger's early work, Being and Time. More specifically, I attempt to work out a detailed comparison between Wordsworth's description of nature as an environing and supporting presence and Heidegger's notion of "world" as an irreducible component of human existence. In contrast to most philosophically oriented critics of The Prelude, who locate Wordsworth's ideas within the metaphysical context of English empiricism or continental transcendentalism and idealism, I argue that the structure of experience presented in ThePrelude actually …
Arsenite In Soils: Analytical Determination, Sorption-Desorption Reactions And Sorption Kinetics (Elevich Equation, Differential Pulse, Polarography)., Elsayed Ahmed Elkhatib
Arsenite In Soils: Analytical Determination, Sorption-Desorption Reactions And Sorption Kinetics (Elevich Equation, Differential Pulse, Polarography)., Elsayed Ahmed Elkhatib
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A technique was developed for the determination of total arsenic (As) in soil using differential pulse polarography. Soil samples were digested with a combination of HNO(,3) and H(,2)SO(,4). Total As was determined in M HCl after reduction of As(V) to As(III) with hydrazine sulfate. Soil and fly ash standards were analyzed by this method and agreement within one standard deviation between replicates was obtained. Approximately 99% recovery of As was obtained from spiked soil samples. Differential pulse polarography is also quite useful for the rapid determination of arsenite in solution during studies of As sorption - desorption by soils. A …
Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Motor Skill Acquisition As A Function Of The Post-Knowledge Of Results Delay Interval And Task Complexity., Jimmy Patrick Timmons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Schmidt (1975) and Weinberg, Guy, and Tupper (1964) have expressed the expectation that post-KR delays in simple to complex motor tasks must increase as task complexity increases if the rate of acquisition is to be maintained. This study was an attempt to investigate that prediction. Nine treatment conditions were established by the interaction of three levels of post-KR delay with three levels of task complexity. Volunteer subjects (N = 10 for each treatment condition) were male undergraduate and graduate students at West Virginia University during the summer of 1979. Twenty trials were received by each subject; the first ten were …

Effects Of Dopamine Norepinephrine, Serotonin And Estradiol-17-Beta On Secretion Of Luteinizing Hormone And Prolactin In The Ewe., Daniel Robert Deaver
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Four studies were conducted to determine effects of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT) and estradiol-17(beta) on secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) in ewes. In the first study, tonic and LHRH-induced secretion of LH was affected by intravenous infusion of DA, NE and 5-HT in a dose-dependent manner in ovariectomized ewes. Responses of LH to increasing doses of DA and 5-HT were biphasic and slopes of dose-response curves between catecholamines and 5-HT were opposite. Secretion of PRL was inhibited by DA and NE but not affected by 5-HT. In anestrous ewes no effects of DA, NE and …
The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie
The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most musical instruments of Western European culture have been studied and defined; however, no systematic study has yet been made for the instrument commonly known as the rebec (or rebeck). General reference sources and musicological studies which mention the rebec often provide discrepant, vague, and erroneous information. The current interest in the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music and the reproduction of instruments upon which this music might have been played has created a need, among performers and instrument makers, for specific, primary source information concerning the rebec. The use of the rebec in Western Europe can be documented through …

The purpose of this study was to examine the categorization behaviors of a group of children at age four, seven, and ten years. The study was designed to conduct basic research in the area of concept formation, and was exploratory in the sense that it sought to define specific levels and strategies of categorization. The main effects of sex, socioeconomic status, age, and response type were investigated. Research findings were sought to support a modification of current cognitive theory in the areas of concept formation and categorical structuring. Related purposes dealt with the examination of preferred classification strategies within specific …
A History Of Game Preservation In British East Africa, 1895-1963., Thomas Paul Ofcansky
A History Of Game Preservation In British East Africa, 1895-1963., Thomas Paul Ofcansky
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
East Africa's wildlife is justly famous. This study examines the difficulty of preserving large numbers of wild animals in societies committed to widespread and rapid economic development. In Kenya the colonial administration had to devise a policy that would enable a rapidly expanding European settler community to live side by side with hundreds of thousands of potentially destructive wild animals. As far as Uganda was concerned, the authorities had to prevent the country's elephant herds from destroying agricultural crops without destroying them. Tanganyika's situation was even more complex. A large number of European and African farmers believed that the only …

Relationships Among Teacher Communication Style, Trait And State Communication Apprehension, And Teacher Effectiveness., Patricia Kearney Knutson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The empirical model tested in this study examined the effects of teacher communication style (as perceived by either teachers or students) on students' affect and behavioral commitment in college classes. Additionally, the model posited a mediational function for teachers ’ and students' trait and state communication apprehension for perceptions of teacher style, affect, and behavioral commitment.
Clinical Treatments Of Depression., Deborah Kay Orth
Clinical Treatments Of Depression., Deborah Kay Orth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Depression seems to be a major problem for college students who are coping with academic and social pressures, as well as defining goals for life and career, often without adequate support systems. Therapy is frequently sought by moderately depressed college students. This treatment teaches the individual a style of thinking or a way of approaching their difficulties, but in one study, the 42 percent who did seek therapy rated the effectiveness as only 3.5 on a 5-point scale (Bosse, 1975). Students perhaps also need a means of coping that they can rely on in addition to the insight and behavior …
Criteria For Coal Reserve Evaluation Of Some Breathitt Formation Coals In Eastern Kentucky Using Depositional Systems Analysis., Larry Ralph Powell
Criteria For Coal Reserve Evaluation Of Some Breathitt Formation Coals In Eastern Kentucky Using Depositional Systems Analysis., Larry Ralph Powell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study is directed towards better insights into the sedimentological variables which affect coal exploration and development. With continuing growth of the coal industry, a better understanding of the geologic conditions governing coal quality and quantity is necessary for efficient coal development and utilization. With most of the strippable, thick coals under development, the importance of understanding depositional systems within the ancient coal-forming swamps becomes more important as more deep mines are opened in thinner seams. The development of these coal mines benefits from an understanding of rapid facies changes characteristic of coal swamp environments that anticipate coal-seam discontinuities, coal-seam …
