Comparison Between Coronally Advanced Flap With Sub-Epithelial Connective Tissue Graft And Tunnel Technique With Sub-Epithelial Connective Tissue Graft In Achieving Mean Root Coverage At Multiple Recession Defects: A Retrospective Study, Christian Daniel Davila
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Aim: The primary objective is to retrospectively compare the mean root coverage (MRC) achieved using a coronally advanced flap and sub-epithelial connective tissue graft (CAF + CTG) with that achieved using the tunnelling technique and sub-epithelial connective tissue graft (TUN + CTG) for the treatment of multiple recession defects. The secondary objectives are to compare the proportion of complete root coverage (CRC) achieved with CAF + CTG compared to TUN + CTG, compare the proportion of CRC achieved in these two techniques with respect to level of training (American board-certified periodontist or Graduate periodontics residents) and to evaluate the …
Puberty-Associated Changes In Kiss1r, Mc3r, And Mc4r In The Ewe, Ashleigh Caitlyn Thomson
Puberty-Associated Changes In Kiss1r, Mc3r, And Mc4r In The Ewe, Ashleigh Caitlyn Thomson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The neural mechanisms that control the onset of puberty are not completely understood. In livestock, the onset of puberty relies on an increase in gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). Kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin neurons (KNDy) and their receptors, Kiss1r, NK3R, and KOR, respectively, are important regulators of puberty. Previous data from our laboratory has shown that KNDy neurons may be responding to other inputs, including the melanocortin system, that will affect the timing of puberty. Given this, we examined kisspeptin receptor (Kiss1r) mRNA expression in GnRH neurons as well as examining melanocortin 3 and 4 receptor …
Choir Teacher Agency And Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Kaitlyn Schramm
Choir Teacher Agency And Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Kaitlyn Schramm
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) (Paris, 2012) is an educational framework that nurtures and sustains students’ cultural competencies and identities. Scholars have recognized the need for practices that sustain and nurture cultural identities and ways of knowing music in the music classroom (Abril, 2009; Bond, 2014; Good Perkins, 2018; Salvador & Culp, 2022; Shaw, 2016). Culturally sustaining teachers reimagine curriculum entirely and place students' cultural assets at the center “as targets of learning to be sustained” (Lee, 2017, p. 262), explored, honored, extended, and critically problematized (Lee, 2017; Paris, 2012; Samy Alim et al., 2020). In choral classrooms, this often involves …
Characterization Of Host Cell Specific Interactions During Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae Infection, Emerson Towey
Characterization Of Host Cell Specific Interactions During Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae Infection, Emerson Towey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vector-borne diseases have been increasing over the past few years due to changes in climate and disturbances in the vectors’ natural environment. To mitigate the risks of these diseases, it is necessary to understand pathogen biology and how it interacts with a host to cause disease. Here we focus our attention on the tick-borne pathogen, Rickettsia rickettsii. R. rickettsii is a member of the spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsiae and is the etiological agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a fatal human disease that is lacking an effective vaccine. Members of the bacterial genus Rickettsia are obligate intracellular endoparasites …

An Evaluation Of A Human-Operant Effort Manipulation And Effects Of Effort Disparity On Renewal, Haleh Amanieh
An Evaluation Of A Human-Operant Effort Manipulation And Effects Of Effort Disparity On Renewal, Haleh Amanieh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The relative effort of target and alternative responses during treatments using differential reinforcement of alternative behavior may impact the likelihood that a previously reduced target response will reemerge following a context change (i.e., “renewal”). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of an effort disparity between target and alternative responses in a human-operant arrangement. Eighteen college students clicked on one (Experiment 1) or two (Experiment 2) circles moving on a computer screen for points. In Experiment 1, the speed of the circle was manipulated as an index of effort such that three circle speeds (i.e., 50, 100, …
Risk Of Parasiticides To Dung-Associated Beetles In West Virginia, Haylie J. Brown
Risk Of Parasiticides To Dung-Associated Beetles In West Virginia, Haylie J. Brown
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ecosystem services provided by dung-associated beetles, such as reducing pasture fouling, parasite suppression, supporting nutrient recycling, and increasing water infiltration, contribute to animal and pasture health. However, parasiticides used to manage cattle parasites, particularly flies and helminths, in West Virginia, can adversely affect these non-target beetles. We assessed the exposure and impact of some parasiticides used in WV including Clarifly® (active ingredient [a.i.] diflubenzuron), Cydectin® (a.i. moxidectin), LongRange® (a.i. eprinomectin), and Safe-guard® (a.i. fenbendazole). In Chapter 1, we review the use of parasiticides in the US and their non-target effects on beneficial dung-associated beetles. In Chapter …

Implementing A Nurse-Driven Clostridium Difficile Screening Protocol, Sandrela Magnuson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ABSTRACT
Background: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a prevalent infection often contracted in hospitals. CDI is also increasingly originating from community settings. In addition to the health risks associated with CDI, diagnosis of a hospital-acquired CDI can have a significant financial impact on hospital systems. When hospital acquired, hospital systems are no longer reimbursed by payers. Secondary to the increasing prevalence of community-acquired CDI, mechanisms for early detection and isolation are warranted.
Local Problem: J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital has an integrated Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) electronic health record (EHR) screening questionnaire that requires updating to align with current guidelines.
Purpose: …
Role Of Β4b-Tubulin (Tubb4b) In The Sensory System And Spermatogenesis, Urikhan Sanzhaeva
Role Of Β4b-Tubulin (Tubb4b) In The Sensory System And Spermatogenesis, Urikhan Sanzhaeva
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Microtubules are ubiquitous cytoskeletal filaments essential in the function of eukaryotic cells. These polymers, comprised of αβ-tubulin heterodimers, are critical for cell division, intracellular transport, and formation of the axonemes of cilia and flagella. This functional diversity of microtubules is attributed to the incorporation of various α- and β-tubulin isotypes encoded by different genes. Indeed, mutations in human tubulin genes have been linked to various tissue-specific diseases, suggesting a unique function for each tubulin isotype. Mutations in the β4B-tubulin gene (TUBB4B) are associated with sensorineural hearing loss, Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a severe childhood blindness, and primary ciliary dyskinesia …
The Effects Of Feed Manufacture On Exogenous Enzymes, Starch Gelatinization, And Antinutritional Factors Associated With Soybeans, Kristina M. Bowen
The Effects Of Feed Manufacture On Exogenous Enzymes, Starch Gelatinization, And Antinutritional Factors Associated With Soybeans, Kristina M. Bowen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This doctorate dissertation consists of four individual studies with the overarching theme of the effect of feed manufacture on exogenous enzymes and antinutrients found in soybeans.
Study 1. Including exogenous enzymes in poultry diets can liberate nutrients that are typically inaccessible to monogastric animals. Phytase feeding research has traditionally been conducted by rearing broilers in raised wire cages, whereas commercially grown broilers are reared on built-up litter. Therefore, cage-based studies may not accurately represent commercial bird performance response to phytase. Birds with access to litter consume it, possibly increasing phosphorus intake leading to suggestions that lower phytase concentrations are required. …
Astrocyte Reprogramming By Th17 Cells In Autoimmune Neuroinflammation: Mechanisms And Implications, Sarah Marie Milne
Astrocyte Reprogramming By Th17 Cells In Autoimmune Neuroinflammation: Mechanisms And Implications, Sarah Marie Milne
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a cell-mediated, demyelinating autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). T helper (Th) 17 cells mediate the pathogenesis of MS and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), in part by infiltrating the CNS and interacting with astrocytes, a resident glial cell. Astrocytes are central to coordinating several inflammatory processes in the CNS and can respond to cytokines and chemokines produced by encephalitogenic Th17 cells. Pathogenesis of MS and EAE requires the infiltration of immune cells from the periphery, including autoreactive T cells, B cells, monocytes, and neutrophils, that lead to neuroinflammation, demyelination, and …
Advanced Techniques In Time Series Forecasting: From Deterministic Models To Deep Learning, Xue Bai
Advanced Techniques In Time Series Forecasting: From Deterministic Models To Deep Learning, Xue Bai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation discusses three instances of temporal prediction, applied to population dynamics and deep learning.
In population modeling, dynamic processes are frequently represented by systems of differential equations, allowing for the analysis of various phenomena. The first application explores modeling cloned hematopoiesis in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) via a nonlinear system of differential equations. By tracking the evolution of different cell compartments, including cycling and quiescent stem cells, progenitor cells, differentiated cells, and terminally differentiated cells, the model captures the transition from normal hematopoiesis to the chronic and accelerated-acute phases of CML. Three distinct non-zero steady states are identified, representing …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed malignant neoplasm shared in men and women worldwide, second only to the sexually dimorphic prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Overall, lung cancer was responsible for 12.5% of new cancer cases globally in the year 2022. Of these cases, 80-85% are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a highly genotypically diverse sub-type of lung cancer. Over the past three decades, extraordinary improvement in screening, smoking cessation, early diagnosis and targeted therapy have been made, improving NSCLC survival markedly. However, as patients are surviving their primary disease better, there is a temporal …

The Identification And Characterization Of Novel And Improved Antigens For Next-Generation Pertussis Vaccines, Gage Michael Pyles
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by infection with the Gram-negative bacterial pathogen Bordetella pertussis. Pertussis affects all age groups and populations; however, it is most severe in infants who are too young to receive vaccinations and remains a global health concern with more than 200,000 cases reported globally in 2023. Vaccines against pertussis have been available in the United States since the 1940’s with the development and widespread use of whole cell pertussis vaccines. Following their introduction, the incidence of pertussis was controlled and limited to fewer than 5,000 cases per year. Despite …

Performance And Physiological Impacts Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid And Tryptophan Ratio Variations In Turkey Starter Diets Utilizing Concentrated Corn Proteins, Emily Blair Estanich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In Chapter 2, a study was designed to evaluate the effects of varying dietary branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) ratio in corn and soybean meal-based turkey starter diets. The BCAA leucine, isoleucine, and valine are considered indispensable amino acids needed for energy and stimulation of muscle protein synthesis via the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. Imbalanced BCAA ratios can lead to antagonism and degradation of limiting BCAA, particularly in diets with excess leucine. Concentrated corn proteins contain high levels of leucine and can alter BCAA requirements; however, crystalline BCAA may be added to correct these ratios. This study aimed to …
Cell-Type-Specific Effects Of Synaptic Zinc In Mouse Auditory Cortex, Mason Mccollum
Cell-Type-Specific Effects Of Synaptic Zinc In Mouse Auditory Cortex, Mason Mccollum
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Synaptic zinc signaling modulates synaptic activity and is present in specific populations of cortical neurons, suggesting that synaptic zinc contributes to the diversity of intracortical synaptic microcircuits and their auditory tuning properties. Stimulus-specific adaptation is a hallmark of sensory processing in which a repeated stimulus results in diminished successive neuronal responses, but a deviant stimulus will still elicit robust responses from the same neurons. Recent work has established that synaptically released zinc is an endogenous mechanism that shapes neuronal responses to sounds in the auditory cortex. Here, to understand the role of zinc signaling in the auditory cortex and the …
The Effects Of Forgetting And Disclosure On Mock Jurors' Perceptions Of An Alleged Rape, Johnathan Meier
The Effects Of Forgetting And Disclosure On Mock Jurors' Perceptions Of An Alleged Rape, Johnathan Meier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Memory recall and forgetting is a complex process. Memories can be completely forgotten (e.g., Ebbinghaus, 1885/1964; Murre, 2015) or repressed and recovered at a later time (e.g., Key et al., 1996; Foster-Lee et al., 1999). Instances of sexual assault may be disclosed to a close acquaintance or medical professional at the time of the event or kept secret until the time of reporting to authorities (e.g., Pica et al., 2020a). In the current study, mock jurors’ perceptions of credibility and guilt, as well as the amount of compensation awarded to the plaintiff, will be assessed in response to testimony depicting …

Endogenous Glucocorticoid Signaling Is Required For Normal Macrophage Response To H. Pylori Infection, Stuti Khadka
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gastric cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, affecting millions of people. H. pylori is the strongest risk factor for gastric cancer, with about 90% of the cases strongly associated with H. pylori infection. Half of the world's population is infected with this bacterium. However, only a small subset of the infected population (1-3 %) go on to develop gastric cancer. Diagnosis of the disease at an early stage is the biggest challenge because of the widespread prevalence of H. pylori infection and a long asymptomatic phase before the advanced stages. Patients are left with limited treatment …

This document outlines my artistic research on building a symbiotic relationship with land throughout life and death, eco-philosophy, and the significance of natural decomposition. It explores green burial practices in Western society, delves into the history of basketry, and draws inspiration from the mutualistic effort of returning our organic energy to the Earth. The recontextualization of what “death” is and reciprocal outlooks are central to this work. My aim is to honor this cycle through creations that incorporate plant matter in hopes that, one day, I can create artwork with completely compostable materials.
My art embodies these themes and is …
A Balancing Act: Microrna Mediated Insect-Bacterial Homeostasis And The Tsetse Fly, Mason Hubbard Lee
A Balancing Act: Microrna Mediated Insect-Bacterial Homeostasis And The Tsetse Fly, Mason Hubbard Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Microbial symbioses are ubiquitous across all kingdoms of life with broad and diverse impacts on the evolution of species. The sum of all microbes living in, on, or otherwise in close association with a host form the microbiota. In some cases, the development of a stable microbial association seems to have been necessary for the specialization of diet, as can be observed in numerous insect species, especially wood-eating, sap-feeding, and blood-feeding organisms. For the medically and economically tsetse fly (family Glossinidae), the mutualistic bacteria Wigglesworthia glossinidia is required for proper reproduction and supplementation of nutrients that the fly does not …
The Function Of Protein Glutamylation In Vision, Rawaa Aljammal
The Function Of Protein Glutamylation In Vision, Rawaa Aljammal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Posttranslational glutamylation of protein has emerged as a novel candidate for cellular integrity. In a dynamic process, Tubulin Tyrosine Ligase Like proteins (TTLLs) introduce glutamate groups to their substrates, while Cytosolic Carboxypeptidases members (CCP1-CCP6) remove these glutamate groups. The outcome of this interplay is a wide range of substrates; each is glutamylated to a level crucial for its function.
Protein glutamylation is particularly abundant in neurons and in the axoneme of cilia and flagella. This distribution, along with the correlation between imbalanced glutamylation levels and compromised cellular functions, underscores the significance of protein glutamylation in maintaining cellular viability. However, the …

An Inquiry Into The Accessibility Of Campus Recreation For College Students With Disabilities, Kayla B. Abrahamson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
University recreation centers are identified as the main sources of physical activity for college students. However, an estimated 68% of college students with disabilities (SWD) use their campus recreational facilities less than five times per year (Yoh et al., 2008). Structural and programmatic accessibility barriers may account for low facility use and corresponding low physical activity levels among college SWD. An accessibility assessment of facilities and programming is warranted to identify priority areas for barrier removal. This collective case study evaluates the accessibility of three campus recreation facilities at 4-year public universities in the southeast U.S. Adopting a mixed-method approach, …
Light Wavelength Modulates Search Behavior Performance In Zebrafish, Matthew Reid Waalkes
Light Wavelength Modulates Search Behavior Performance In Zebrafish, Matthew Reid Waalkes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Long-term internal states drive many behaviors in animals. Zebrafish is a common vertebrate model conducive to finding the neural coding to these behaviors. In the Horstick lab, the larval zebrafish light search behavior is central to our research. This behavior, which is the locomotor response to the loss of light in larval zebrafish, is controlled by multiple neural populations that drive different internal states. The sensory neurons initially responsible for this behavior are photosensitive due to the expression of light-absorbing proteins called opsins. Opsins vary in the ranges of wavelengths of light that they absorb, and are expressed in distinct …

Investigation Of L-Serine Synthesis And Transport As Stabilizing Feedback Mechanisms Within The Tsetse-Wigglesworthia Symbiosis, Ryan Phillips
Investigation Of L-Serine Synthesis And Transport As Stabilizing Feedback Mechanisms Within The Tsetse-Wigglesworthia Symbiosis, Ryan Phillips
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tsetse flies (Glossina morsitans), which are the obligate vectors of Old-World trypanosomes (Trypanosoma spp.) that cause African trypanosomiasis, have a bacteriome that houses the intracellular endosymbiont Wigglesworthia glossinidia. The ancient coevolution of these species has led to the integration of Wigglesworthia metabolism into tsetse physiology and a subsequent reliance on nutrient exchange for maintaining the fitness of both partners. The establishment of this obligate mutualism has facilitated the emergence of feedback mechanisms that stabilize the symbiosis, such as that which involves the exchange of L-serine and B vitamins. The Gammaproteobacteria Wigglesworthia supplement B vitamins lacking …
