Genetic Basis For Thermal Tolerance In Two Different Strains Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss): Case Western And Kamloops, Paola Reale
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the thermal tolerance based on how expression of Heat Shock Protein (HSP) 70 and HSP90 differ between two different strains of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), the Case Western strain and the Kamloops strain, and determines if cortisol levels affect HSP expression in red blood cells. The Case Western strain is considered the only warm water trout, only recently was any aspect of its thermal tolerance quantified. Porto (2012) determined critical thermal maxima (CTM) for the Case Western strain and found it to be about 0.15 °C higher than the Kamloops strain. This thesis is comprised of three …

Habitat Selection Of Male Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) In West Virginia, Jesse L. De La Cruz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) have been the focus of widespread research throughout their range, but research on male wild turkey home range size and habitat resource selection is limited in West Virginia. To address this lack of knowledge, I proposed the quantification of home range within a region (second-order) and core home range within a periphery (third-order) resource selection. Home ranges estimates and regional vector sampling grids were modeled against anthropomorphic land use and landscape cover features, land fragmentation, slope, and aspect raster data within the Geospatial Modeling Environment (GME) to derive proportional resource use and availability data.;West …

Pharmacological Characterization Of An Optimized Sigma Receptor Ligand, Michael Seminerio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methamphetamine is an addictive psychostimulant drug with an increasing prevalence of abuse worldwide. Recent evidence has linked methamphetamine exposure to a wide array of neurological complications some of which lead to neurodegenerative changes in the brain and hyperthermia. Currently, there are no FDA approved pharmacologic agents to treat the effects of methamphetamine. Recent evidence has suggested methamphetamine may, in part, produce some of its effects through sigma receptors making them a potential target for pharmacological intervention. While our lab has shown a number of selective sigma receptor ligands can provide neuroprotection against the neurotoxic and behavioral effects of methamphetamine, limitations …

This research focuses on identifying optimal data and methods for detecting and quantifying land cover/land use change associated with natural gas drilling in Appalachia. Airborne and satellite remote sensing provides a tool for examining land cover changes. Although change detection has been used in many applications related to natural and anthropogenic land cover change, little research has investigated the spatial pattern of land cover change associated with the ongoing expansion of natural gas drilling, particularly within the Marcellus Shale formation found across much of the northern Appalachian Region. Mapping land cover/land use change facilitates research of other relevant topics that …
The Relationship Between Temperament And Facets Of Creativity, Clark Daniel Pinson
The Relationship Between Temperament And Facets Of Creativity, Clark Daniel Pinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purported association between mental illness and creativity has been most heavily researched in individuals diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. The bipolar disorders have been conceptualized as a spectrum of disorders that range from problematic and labile affect to different types of temperament. Temperament has classically been defined as elements of personality that are heritable, stable, based on emotion, and uninfluenced by socio-cultural learning. Contemporary literature suggested that at least some aspects of creativity may be enhanced by an affective range that has been best characterized by the milder part of the bipolar spectrum of disorders. The primary inquiry of …

The Role Of Clustered Organization And Generation Of Mixed Properties In Macaque V2, Clinton Garret Cooper
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Throughout the mammalian cortex, neurons of similar response characteristics group together into topographic functional domains. The genesis and role of this organization remains in question, but it has been proposed to affect the mixed properties of neurons. These types of neurons possess multiple receptive field preferences, such as a cell responding to a color and an oriented stimulus. To examine the functionality of clustered organization and their effect in generation of neurons possessing mixed properties, this dissertation examined the secondary visual cortex (V2) of the Macaca fasicularis. This particular cortex is comprised of domains organized according to distinct visual stimulus …

Characterization Of Terrelysin, A Potential Biomarker For Aspergillus Terreus, Ajay Padmaj Nayak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Exposure to fungi can lead to diverse conditions from allergy to colonization to invasive and disseminated infection, depending on the status of the host immune system. Recent data suggests that fungal infections and especially Aspergillus species has been on the rise. Though mostly affecting immunocompromised individuals, more recent reports have identified infections in immunocompetent populations as well. Aspergillus terreus is of particular interest, since it causes rapid disseminating infections with high mortality rates, owing to its natural resistance to antifungal drugs and production of vegetative aleurioconidia during infection. These attributes coupled with poor current diagnostics and increasing costs involved with …

An Assessment Of Stream Fishing Venues In West Virginia: A Comparison Of Anglers Along A Spectrum Of Access, Radley E. Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia places an emphasis on fishing as a way to increase nature-based tourism. However, heavy fishing pressure on public water and unequal fishing effort at stocking locations can lead to declining catch rates and an increasing number of visitors that experience catch deprivation and dissatisfaction. Controlling access to streams is one approach to dealing with this carrying capacity issue. Both public and private land managers have approached this problem differently using various levels of control. For example, Pipestem State Park managers provided anglers with access to the Bluestone River with few controls via an aerial tramway prior to 2009. …

Negative Reinforcement By Timeout From Avoidance: The Roles Of Discriminative Cues, Shock-Frequency Reduction, And Response-Effort Reduction, Anne M. Foreman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Timeout from avoidance is an effective reinforcer, but the reason is not firmly established. Rats responded on concurrent schedules of avoidance and timeout. Pressing the right lever postponed shocks according to a schedule with a response-shock interval of 30 s and a shock-shock interval of 5 s, and pressing the left lever produced 2-min timeouts according to a variable-interval 45-s schedule. To assess the roles of shock-frequency reduction, response-effort reduction, and signals in varying the reinforcing efficacy of timeout, three experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, to assess the point at which the reinforcing efficacy of the timeouts would be …
Effects Of Reinforcer Magnitude And D-Amphetamine On Delay Discounting In Rats, William J. P. Reilly
Effects Of Reinforcer Magnitude And D-Amphetamine On Delay Discounting In Rats, William J. P. Reilly
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Delay-discounting procedures are commonly employed to study impulsive choice, which can be defined as choice for a smaller, more immediate reinforcer over a larger, more delayed reinforcer. Differences in reinforcer magnitude have been shown to alter delay discounting with human participants, but results have been mixed with non-human animals. It is also unclear what impact the absolute difference between a smaller, more immediate and a larger, more delayed reinforcer has on choice in a delay-discounting context. Therefore, in Experiment 1 of the present study, effects of different reinforcer magnitudes on delay discounting in rats were examined using a discrete-trials procedure …

Modifications Of Pre And Postnatal Development Due To Placental Efficiency And Maternal Exercise During Gestation In Swine, Tiffany Ann Wilmoth
Modifications Of Pre And Postnatal Development Due To Placental Efficiency And Maternal Exercise During Gestation In Swine, Tiffany Ann Wilmoth
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In pigs, litter size and developmental competence are crucial for successful production of the meat product. However, the ability of the placenta to produce a developmentally competent pig is vital in the production of meat animals. Placental efficiency (fetal weight divided by placental weight) has been studied as a measure of placental function and litter size. Selection for increased placental efficiency has been shown to increase placental efficiency as well as litter size. Furthermore, formative muscle development occurs entirely during gestation, so that the number of muscle fibers the pig is born with is reflective of the number of fibers …
A High-Temperature Electrochemical Carbon Monoxide Sensor With Nanostructured Metal Oxide Electrode, Anveeksh Koneru
A High-Temperature Electrochemical Carbon Monoxide Sensor With Nanostructured Metal Oxide Electrode, Anveeksh Koneru
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the major air pollutants which are emitted due to the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is highly toxic to humans and animals. Hence, a CO sensor not only serves as an alarm system for threat of CO, but also be used for monitoring the combustion process to improve the combustion efficiency. The currently existing technologies to detect CO such as gas chromatography and optical absorption spectrometry are cumbersome, costly, and lack the capability of on-line monitoring. Thus there is a critical need for developing CO …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methamphetamine (METH) is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug of abuse, causing hyperthermia and neurotoxicity at high doses. Currently, there is no clinically proven pharmacotherapy to treat these effects of METH, necessitating identification of potential novel therapeutic targets. Earlier studies showed that METH binds to sigma receptors in the brain at physiologically relevant concentrations, where it acts in part as an agonist. AC927 (1-(2-phenethyl)piperidine oxalate), CM156 (3-(4-(4-cyclohexylpiperazin-1-yl)butyl)benzo[d]thiazole-2(3H)-thione) and SN79 (6-acetyl-3-(4-(4-(4-florophenyl)piperazin-1-yl)butyl)benzo[d]oxazol-2(3H)-one) were synthesized as putative sigma receptor antagonists with nanomolar affinity and selectivity for sigma receptors over 29-80 other binding sites. AC927, CM156 and SN79 pretreatment afforded protection against METH-induced hyperthermia and …
