Newman, Chad, M.A. December 2007 Geography Small-Hydroelectricity and Landscape Change in the Bitterroot Mountains: Public Perceptions and Attitudes Chairperson: Dr. David D. Shively The development and use of renewable energy resources within America has made significant progress over the last two decades. Many state governments have adopted legislation requiring the development of their local renewable resources for generating electricity. In 2005, Montana’s State Legislature passed Senate Bill 415, The Montana Renewable Power Production and Rural Economic Development Act. This piece of legislation mandates the development and use of renewable energy resources by energy producers and requires that fifteen percent of …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This quantitative study investigates a number of parameters associated with the first-year student’s math experience at The University of Montana: performance in the course and mathematics placement in the fall of 2005. The study sample is comprised of 1,044 first-year students who enroll in one of six selected 100-level math courses offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, ranging from intermediate algebra to calculus. Average grade earned by first-year students varies from a low of 1.72 in intermediate algebra to a high of 3.37 in applied calculus. The study finds that a first-year student’s ACT or SAT math score is …
Examining The Variability In The Long Term Adjustment Of Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Heather Marie Ulrich
Examining The Variability In The Long Term Adjustment Of Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Heather Marie Ulrich
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Two meta-analyses (Rind, Tromovitch & Bauserman, 1998; Ulrich, Randolph, & Acheson, 2006) have suggested that the long held belief about the inevitable pervasive negative effects of child sexual abuse does not hold for college populations. The meta-analyses suggest that there is other factors in sexual abuse victims' lives that interact with their abuse experience to produce the sometimes-observed minimal long-term effects on psychological adjustment. This research attempted to examine a potential model for explaining the variability in the long-term effects of child sexual abuse by examining both moderator variables and abuse characteristics within the same population. The study examined three …

Distance From Family, Years Of Life On Reservation/Village, Level Of Acculturation, Gender, And Acculturation Stress Of American Indian/Alaska Native Students At The University Of Montana, Michael Brian Trahan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Acculturation is a construct that supposes that two or more cultures interact and are in conflict with one another, and an individual can determine which qualities to adhere to from each culture. Acculturation stress is a product of the acculturation process, in which an individual experiences stress as a result of the interaction of the multiple cultures upon the individual. This study examined the effects of acculturation stress on 41 (14 male and 27 female) American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) university students in an effort to determine whether this stress is related to level of acculturation, years lived on an Indian …

Risk-Sensitive Foraging In Humans Budgeting Time: Correlated With Real-World Financial Situation, Stephanie Carsten Kucera
Risk-Sensitive Foraging In Humans Budgeting Time: Correlated With Real-World Financial Situation, Stephanie Carsten Kucera
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Foraging theory has been studied extensively in non-human animals. Using models developed through animal-study, researchers have recently begun to examine how humans make decisions with regard to resource-expenditure. Using a computer-based task, the proposed study investigated risk-sensitive decision-making, in humans. Participants were asked to "spend" a most valuable resource, time, in order to complete a computer-based task. Participants were asked to choose between two computer-generated selection boxes, each yielding a different delay-value. However, participants were given different feedback as to how each session progressed (i.e. whether ahead or behind) depending on the budget condition to which he was assigned. It …
Comparison Of Power Output Between Rotor And Normal Cranks During A 16.1 Km Time Trial, Walter Hailes
Comparison Of Power Output Between Rotor And Normal Cranks During A 16.1 Km Time Trial, Walter Hailes
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Previous research has evaluated the Rotor crank system on indices of endurance performance (e.g. peak power output, VO2max, lactate threshold, onset of blood lactate accumulation, economy, delta, and gross efficiency) under laboratory conditions. However, previous research has not attempted to determine whether the use of the Rotor cranks can improve sustainable power output during a time trial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the Rotor crank system on 16.1km time trial performance in the field. Eleven recreationally trained cyclists (7 male, 4 female; age 21±2 yrs) volunteered to participate in the study. On two separate …

Harry And Gretchen Billings And The People's Voice, Anne Elizabeth Pettinger
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Pettinger, Anne, M.A., Autumn 2006 Journalism Harry and Gretchen Billings and the People’s Voice Chairperson: Dennis Swibold Though the People’s Voice was published for three decades and during a time when Montana was undergoing significant change, little has been written about the paper and its long-time editors, Harry and Gretchen Billings. The weekly Voice, published in Helena from 1939 to 1969, was conceived in response to frustration over corporate control of most of the state’s dailies. As a cooperatively owned paper that refused commercial advertising and gave complete independence to its editor, the Voice was an anomaly in mid-twentieth century …
Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville
Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study was conducted to explore the social dimensions of wilderness fire management. I set out to answer the question what role does an individual’s attachment to place play in determining the acceptability of management actions directed towards fire? I feel that problems will arise if management agencies attempt to restore natural fire regimes to wilderness areas without accounting for the effects on meanings and values different people attach to landscapes. I used a qualitative method and conducted guided interviews with 27 people from three different groups: (1) fire and wilderness management personnel from the Bitterroot National Forest, (2) residents …

Opstad, Tricia, M.A., Autumn 2006 Fine Arts, Integrated Arts and Education The Making of a Mini-Documentary: “Pockets”, the Concept, Artistic Process and Personal Reflection Chairperson: Karen Kaufmann In the making of my first movie, titled “Pockets”, I worked to understand documentary making by interviewing members of the community in Missoula, Montana. The immediate and multi-faceted nature of video as a medium gave me many opportunities to actively participate in the creative process and thrive in the spontaneity of interactions in the moment. Along with videographer Felicia Edwards, I asked random people on the streets, one question: “What’s in your pockets?” …

Within these pages lie reflections and descriptions of a voyage into unknown territory. A voyage, which has ended, yet is just beginning. Here for your consideration follows a documentation of an artistic process. Humbly, I put before you a modest attempt at presenting a number of personal discoveries made within the last four years. First I had chosen to participate in a program of Integrated Arts, the Creative Pulse. My participation in the Artist-Forest-Community Residency in the Helena National Forest the week before I began the program initiated a desire to present my artwork and become a better teacher. Expanding …
