Agricultural systems are being re-engineered with hedgerows, living mulches, or minimum tillage activities in hopes of retaining populations of beneficial, predatory insects that may decrease the need for pesticide use. The purpose of this research was twofold. First, this on-farm research assessed the population and activity of six beneficial arthropod predators - the carabid beetle (Carabidae: Coleoptera), minute pirate bug (Orius spp.: Hemiptera), nabid bug (Nabis spp.: Hemiptera), lady beetle larvae (family Coccinellidae: Coleoptera), syrphid fly larvae (Syrphidae: Diptera) and spiders (Araneae) - and one crop pest - the imported cabbage worm (Pieris rapae: Lepidoptera) - within a no-till Brussels …

Participation is a key component in socially just, successful nature conservation. Yet, participation can range from informing citizens to offering them decision-making power. Only participation that allows for an open, respectful negotiation of conservation planning and implementation opens the door to engaging, place-appropriate conservation, rather than conservation implemented by external agents with external agendas. However ecologically or socially correct these external agendas may be, collaboration by all stakeholders validates the appropriateness of conservation projects. One conservation tool is education, which typically assumes that the public lacks environmental knowledge and that information can create environmentally aware and active citizens. Often in …

ABSTRACT Pete, Shandin, Hashkeh, M.S., December, 2006 Geology Characterization of Pre and Post Re-Naturalized Surface Water/Groundwater Exchange, Jocko River, Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana. Chair: Dr. William Woessner Construction of flood protection levees in the 1950’s resulted in channel incision of 2200 ft of the Jocko River. Resulting floodplain water table lowering is thought to have altered surface water/groundwater interactions, impairing riparian habitat and trout fisheries. The transport of contaminants to the Arctic and their presence in traditional foods in the region is causing concern about potential adverse health impacts resulting from exposure to these globally-borne chemicals. In this study, ten stakeholders in the issue of contaminants in traditional foods in Alaska were interviewed to determine how they define the problem, and in doing so, to determine if they perceive that the situation constitutes an environmental injustice for Alaska Natives. The interview transcripts were analyzed using five sub-frames of the environmental justice framework: distributive justice, procedural justice, indigenous rights, corrective justice, and ecological sustainability.
