Spatial Drivers Of Ecosystem Structure And Function In A Floodplain Riverscape: Springbrook Nutrient Dynamics, Samantha Kate Caldwell
Spatial Drivers Of Ecosystem Structure And Function In A Floodplain Riverscape: Springbrook Nutrient Dynamics, Samantha Kate Caldwell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
On riverine floodplains, reorganization by fluvial processes creates and maintains a mosaic of aquatic and riparian landscape elements across a biophysical gradient of disturbance and succession. I hypothesized that ecosystem processes in spring brooks would differ spatially across biophysical zones because landscape position dictates severity of flood disturbance and allochthonous inputs from contiguous terrestrial and groundwater systems. Between July and October 2011, I quantified aspects of ecosystem structure and function among six streams (i.e., spring brooks) originating on the Nyack floodplain, Flathead River, Montana. Among sites large wood standing stocks differed over 300-fold (0.04 – 13.5 kg m-2), dominant particle …
The Effects Of Modeled Writing On Early Literacy Development In Preschool Children, Bethany M. Froehlich Collins
The Effects Of Modeled Writing On Early Literacy Development In Preschool Children, Bethany M. Froehlich Collins
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the impacts on early literacy development in preschool children by engaging them in writing activities that were intentionally modeled within their typical classroom setting. Twenty-five typically developing children 3 to 5 years of age participated in the study. The "Picture Story/Word Story,” a preschool writing strategy described by Paulson, et al. (2001), was used to model the developmental levels of writing for the subjects two times a week for 10 weeks. The experimental group engaged in writing activities, which included intentional modeling of the stages of writing development that were just above …
Off Risking: Offender Risk Assessment And The Correctional Assessment And Intervention System, Eden Heeder
Off Risking: Offender Risk Assessment And The Correctional Assessment And Intervention System, Eden Heeder
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 2010 the State of Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) licensed the Correctional Assessment and Intervention System (CAIS) to address the high rate of recidivism among Co-occurring and Native American offenders. Montana DOC reported a significantly lower rate of revocation among the offenders assessed by the CAIS. Quantitative and Qualitative analyses were conducted to determine what aspects of the program facilitated the lower rates of revocation. Results of this analysis determined that several factors acting in concert contributed to the lower rates of revocation with the most meaningful contribution being that of rapport built between the probation officer and offender.
Assessment Of Prediction Bias In Crown Biomass Equations For Important Conifer Species Of The Inland Northwest, Brian Robert Turnquist
Assessment Of Prediction Bias In Crown Biomass Equations For Important Conifer Species Of The Inland Northwest, Brian Robert Turnquist
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Several crown biomass equations have been developed for local, regional, and national scale biomass estimation across the United States. The prediction equations most commonly used were developed by Brown (1978) and Jenkins et al. (2003). Because of the widespread application of these equations for managerial and scientific use in the inland northwest, USA, crown mass data for several important conifer species were collected and used to examine the direction and magnitude of bias associated with predictions made from the diameter-based equations of Brown (1978) and Jenkins et al. (2003). A total of 140 trees of 4 different conifer species were …
Bison Conservation In The Northern Great Plains, Michel Thomas Kohl
Bison Conservation In The Northern Great Plains, Michel Thomas Kohl
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Temperate grasslands are the least protected ecosystem in the world. In North America, only < 4% of tallgrass prairie, 64% of mixed-grass prairie, and 66% of shortgrass prairie are intact. Historically, grazing played an important role in maintaining prairie landscapes through nutrient cycling and the diversification of vegetation structure and composition. Within grasslands, the plains bison (Bos bison) was the most numerous and influential grazer. However, by 1900 bison were reduced to ¡Ü 1,000 animals throughout North America. Today, bison are scattered throughout their historical range, numbering > 500,000 individuals. Recent questions have surfaced regarding the success of this effort, however, because < 21,000 plains bison are managed as conservation herds (n = 62) and 8% of those herds are managed on areas of > 2,000 km2. In addition, >100,000,000 cattle now graze rangelands in the U.S. and Canada leading to questions regarding the ecological significance of replacing bison with livestock. Our objectives were to increase knowledge regarding the ecological similarities between bison and cattle, and to determine how both species can be managed to mimic ecological patterns that approximate historical bison populations. We used behavioral observations, movement analyses, and Resource Selection Function (RSF) analyses too quantify …

Characterization Of A Cardboard Recycling Facility's Plastic Waste For Beneficial Use, Tova Sardot
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
An issue with old cardboard container (OCC) recycling is the generation of a plastic waste that currently either gets land-filled or burned. A Wandel screen, a common process unit, generates 35% of overall rejects that contain 75% of the facility's total plastic output. Plastic-rich Wandel wastes have not been well characterized. This study evaluated the plastic waste stream for engineering new, second-life products. Wandel wastes were composed typically of hot melt adhesives (37%), polypropylene (32%), polyethylene (17%), and polystyrene (9%). Proportions varied 10% or less in each polymer category. The plastic waste was compounded, milled and injection molded into test …
College Dating Couples' Use Of Conflict Management During A Prisoner's Dilemma Task: An Exploratory Study, Kristen E. Waldemayer
College Dating Couples' Use Of Conflict Management During A Prisoner's Dilemma Task: An Exploratory Study, Kristen E. Waldemayer
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Dating violence that occurs in young college-aged couples is unique when compared to other types of violence. Aggression occurring in these couples is often bidirectional, highly impacted by situational stressors, and perpetrated by both males and females at relatively equal rates. Most importantly, dating aggression occurs within a developmental context when individuals are attempting to balance autonomy and intimacy within their relationships. However, little is known about conflict management within dating couples or if conflict management processes differ substantially for aggressive and non-aggressive dating couples. Although there has been extensive research in marital processes in conflict, only recently have researchers …

Composition, Distribution, And Conservation Of The Herpetofauna Of Santa Barbara Mountain, Honduras, Alicia Marie Ward
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Santa Barbara Mountain is an important and unique ecosystem in Honduras because of its topography and high proportion of endemic species. Despite its prospects for valuable discoveries and the profusion of threats to its biodiversity, there is almost no scientific information about Santa Barbara Mountain. This study is the first systematic investigation of hepetofauna species on the mountain. Research objectives included inventorying of the reptile and amphibian species present on Santa Barbara Mountain, identifying locations and microhabitat types where each species can be found, and determining if the amphibian disease chytridiomycosis is present and in which locations. A community education …
Forgotten Sepulchers: The Uninscribed Tombs In The Valley Of The Kings In Luxor, Egypt, Roselyn Campbell
Forgotten Sepulchers: The Uninscribed Tombs In The Valley Of The Kings In Luxor, Egypt, Roselyn Campbell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The elaborately decorated tombs in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt, have captured the imagination of scholars and tourists alike for thousands of years. Yet despite the attention lavished on these tombs, they are outnumbered in the Valley of the Kings uninscribed tombs that have been largely ignored. Excavations in several of the uninscribed tombs have demonstrated that although their walls may be bare, the tombs are certainly not empty, and a variety of finds ranging from scattered funerary objects and human remains to several nearly intact burials of high officials have been uncovered. This thesis will assemble …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine heat acclimatization across a 4-month fire season in the western United States. Methods: Wildland firefighters (WLFF) (n =12) and non-WLFFs (n =14) completed a 60-min heat stress trial (treadmill walking at 50% peak VO2) in a climate controlled chamber (43.3°C, 33% RH) prior to and following the fire season (May through September). Peak VO2, body composition, core (Tc) and skin (Tsk) temperatures, heart rate (HR), physiological strain index (PSI), plasma volume change, sweat rate and perceived exertion (RPE) were measured during the heat stress trials. Results: Average peak VO2 was similar …
Impacts Of Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreak On Biogeochemical Cycling In A High Elevation Whitebark Pine Ecosystem, Megan Keville
Impacts Of Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreak On Biogeochemical Cycling In A High Elevation Whitebark Pine Ecosystem, Megan Keville
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Ecological disturbances can significantly impact biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial ecosystems, but the effects of the current widespread mountain pine beetle outbreak on ecosystem processes like carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling are poorly understood. This is especially true in high elevation whitebark pine (WbP) (Pinus albicaulis) ecosystems of western North America. WbP has been described as a keystone species, providing a critical food source and regulating hydrologic regimes. However, widespread WbP mortality caused by the mountain pine beetle drives structural and physiological changes in WbP forests, which could result in shifts in pools and fluxes of C and N within …

Psychometric Evaluations Of An Acculturation Scale And An Acculturation Stress Scale With American Indian University Students, Michael Brian Trahan
Psychometric Evaluations Of An Acculturation Scale And An Acculturation Stress Scale With American Indian University Students, Michael Brian Trahan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Acculturation and acculturation stress are constructs studied with various minority groups. This study tests the factor loadings for both the Native American Acculturation Scale (N.A.A.S.) and the Social, Attitudinal, Familial, and Environmental Acculturation Stress Scale (S.A.F.E.), as well as the reliability of these measures with American Indian undergraduate and graduate students in a university setting. The first hypothesis was that the factor loadings of the N.A.A.S. with this sample would not resemble the original factor structure found by Garrett and Pichette (2000). It was also believed that the N.A.A.S. would exhibit robust reliability with this sample, based upon a previous, …
Corticosterone As A Mediator Of The Tradeoff Between Survival And Reproduction, Stephen Harold Patterson
Corticosterone As A Mediator Of The Tradeoff Between Survival And Reproduction, Stephen Harold Patterson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Organisms cannot simultaneously maximize their investment in survival and reproductive success, thus these traits are said to trade off against one another. The physiological mechanisms that help guide these investment decisions are not fully understood. Stress-induced corticosterone is a strong candidate mechanism, because it is thought to promote survival-oriented behavior and physiology at the expense of non-critical functions such as reproduction. In this dissertation, I studied multiple components of corticosterone physiology (baseline corticosterone and stress-induced corticosterone) in several species of passerine birds to address this question from a variety of angels. I first provide direct support for corticosterone playing a …

Evaluating Repeat Photography In Documenting Natural And Cultural Landscape Changes: A Changing Crown Of The Continent Ecosystem Between 1899 And 2010, Dusty Leigh Waltner
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Photography can be an invaluable tool in human geographical research, for example, to better understand the importance of place to people. Increasingly, geographers are looking at how photography can play an active role in the construction of geographical knowledge, that is, how photographs are seen rather than what they show. This study examines the use of repeat photography as a research method by conducting a case study on landscape change in the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem. Grounded in extensive archival research on the past, present, and future uses of photography as a research method, a repeat photography survey was …
Undercurrent, Stephanie Rasmussen Johnsen
Undercurrent, Stephanie Rasmussen Johnsen
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
My thesis work references dynamic river processes as a metaphor for relationships and the processes by which these relationships form us as individuals. The images stem from my experience as a professional and recreational whitewater river guide (memories that were powerful in shaping my life) and observations of others candidly interacting. I use river-like references (such as holes, deep pools, eddies, currents) with figurative images to explore the idea of surface and subsurface: the apparent and the obscure. Rivers, like people, have such a depth of current and dynamic change that gives them shape and form. Even with the most …

Assessing Efficacy Of Restoration Treatments In Juniper Savannas Using Spatial Wavelets And Dot Grids On Aerial Photography, Erik James Apland
Assessing Efficacy Of Restoration Treatments In Juniper Savannas Using Spatial Wavelets And Dot Grids On Aerial Photography, Erik James Apland
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Across much of their diverse natural range in the Western US, species of the genus juniperus are expanding onto open grass and shrublands and infilling open woodland areas. In Southern Arizona’s Clifton Ranger District, landscape-scale restoration treatments have been used to stall this expansion and reduce canopy-cover. This study utilizes and compares two techniques – dot- grid sampling and spatial wavelet analysis (SWA) – to estimate the efficacy of these treatments by measuring canopy-cover change pre-and post-treatment. Further, using the SWA dataset, the study explores the potential of SWA for landscape-scale ecological attribute estimation. This study found that restoration treatments …

Conservation Genetics Of Sauger In The Upper Missouri River Drainage, Daniel Michael Bingham
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Hybridization with non-native walleye may play a substantial role in sauger declines throughout the upper Missouri River drainage of Montana and Wyoming. I identified 11 microsatellite loci to detect interspecific hybridization and describe the genetic population structure of sauger. Two major population groupings of sauger were revealed by principal component analysis. The first consisted of samples from the Missouri and lower Yellowstone River drainages, which showed no evidence for genetic divergence among each other. The second major grouping contained samples from the Bighorn River drainage and the upper Yellowstone River. Samples from the upper Bighorn River drainage were genetically distinct …

Coordinative Aerobic Exercise Does Not Enhance Attention And Concentration In College Students, Meryl Heather Epstein
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
There is a historic and recently growing body of research that shows physical activity and fitness both have a positive effect on cognitive function, improved memory, and learning. The purpose of this study was to determine whether acute moderate to vigorous coordinative aerobic activity carried out prior to taking the d2 Test of Attention positively affected attention and concentration measures in a sample of college students at the University of Montana. The results of this investigation found no acute physical activity effect on the test scores. The results did demonstrate that there was a significant learning effect to the d2 …
Effects Of Different Canopy Tree Species On Belowground Biogeochemistry In A Wet Lowland Tropical Forest, Adrienne Blair Keller
Effects Of Different Canopy Tree Species On Belowground Biogeochemistry In A Wet Lowland Tropical Forest, Adrienne Blair Keller
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Tropical rain forests are known for their tremendous biological diversity, but the effects of plant diversity on important ecosystem processes remain unclear. Interspecies differences in both the demand for nutrients and in foliar nutrient concentrations could drive differences in litter chemistry that affect both pools and fluxes of belowground resources. Yet, our understanding of the effects of aboveground biogeochemical heterogeneity on belowground ecosystems is poor, especially in the species-rich forests of the wet tropics. To investigate the effects of tree species diversity on belowground biogeochemical processes, I examined how carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycles vary under canopy …
Essential Elements Of Ecological Literacy And The Pathways To Achieve It: Perspectives Of Ecologists, Brooke Baldauf Mcbride
Essential Elements Of Ecological Literacy And The Pathways To Achieve It: Perspectives Of Ecologists, Brooke Baldauf Mcbride
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
National assessments have led many to conclude that the level of ecological literacy among the general population in the United States is too low to enable effective social responses to current environmental challenges. However, the actual meaning of ecological literacy varies considerably between academic fields and has been a topic of intensive deliberation for several decades. Within the field of ecology in particular, a driving purpose behind this ongoing discussion has been to advance a complete, pedagogy-guiding, and broadly applicable framework for ecological literacy, allowing for the establishment of guidelines and tools for assessing educational achievement; yet, a widely accepted …
Feeling The Burn: A Discursive Analysis Of Organizational Burnout In Seasonal Wildland Firefighters, Whitney Eleanor Marie Maphis
Feeling The Burn: A Discursive Analysis Of Organizational Burnout In Seasonal Wildland Firefighters, Whitney Eleanor Marie Maphis
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This qualitative study of seasonal wildland firefighters examined stress and burnout in firefighters, the discourse that helps to systematically form firefighters’ conceptualizations of burnout, and what factors enable firefighters to manage or mitigate burnout. Traditionally, burnout is studied in long-term, year-round positions, and this study took a unique angle in considering a temporary/seasonal workforce. A discursive lens was used to investigate the enduring systems of meanings that firefighters draw upon in their everyday talk to more comprehensively understand burnout. Three main Discursive resources emerged from the data: teamwork, a "can-do" attitude, and bureaucracy. Teamwork and a can-do attitude serve as …
Future Potential Net Primary Production Trends Of Contiguous United States Rangelands, Adam Lasalle Moreno
Future Potential Net Primary Production Trends Of Contiguous United States Rangelands, Adam Lasalle Moreno
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Rangelands are an important ecosystem covering nearly 24% of the earth’s terrestrial vegetation. Climate change is predicted to affect many of the factors that influence the production of rangeland vegetation. Understanding future trends and patterns in net primary production (NPP) requires projected potential NPP to better understand how rangelands will be affected by a changing climate. Here, I used climate data projected from a global climate model (GCM) to drive the biogeochemical model (Biome-BGC) in an attempt to simulate future potential NPP trends in rangelands of the contiguous United States from 2001-2100 on a 100 km2 scale. In response to …
Predicting Amphibian Occurrence Based On Wetland And Landscape Level Factors In Montana, Catherine Anne Mcintyre
Predicting Amphibian Occurrence Based On Wetland And Landscape Level Factors In Montana, Catherine Anne Mcintyre
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Amphibians have a complex life history that requires a mosaic of habitats, including breeding, foraging, and over-wintering areas. Historically, regulators have focused on wetland breeding habitat quality to explain amphibian presence. Recently, other habitat requirements including landscape level factors have been examined. Data collected from amphibian surveys in Montana were used to determine if wetland quality factors or landscape level factors were better determinants of amphibian occurrence at breeding sites. Twenty-six habitat models were constructed a priori for eight species of amphibians in Montana. This included five models containing parameters associated with wetland quality, ten landscape level models, and ten …
Running Economy: Improvements In Physiological Efficiency Attained Through Changes In Muscle Structural Morphology, Joseph Kenneth Pellegrino
Running Economy: Improvements In Physiological Efficiency Attained Through Changes In Muscle Structural Morphology, Joseph Kenneth Pellegrino
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Running Economy (RE) is a crucial determinant for running performance. While strategies for improving RE have been determined, the mechanisms governing this phenomenon have eluded the scientific community. My objective was to determine what adaptations, physiological, morphological, or otherwise, occur to bring about the altered RE associated with plyometric training. Specifically this project was designed to examine whether measureable transformations in muscle protein isoform makeup brought on through specific training will result in better RE in moderately trained runners. Participants (n=25) were placed into either a plyometrics-training or control group. All participants underwent similar testing before and after the 6-week …
