Memory For Complex Pictures: Development And Validation Of Digit Test Of Effort, John W. Denboer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The assessment of client effort during neuropsychological evaluation is of high importance. Two experiments were designed to assess the psychometric properties of a new measure of client effort during neuropsychological assessment (entitled Memory for Complex Pictures (MCP). Participants for Experiment 1 were undergraduates without a history of neurological conditions, mental health concerns, or current problems with alcohol or drug use. Two goals were proposed for Experiment 1: (a) to compare the sensitivity, specificity, and face validity of the MCP with the psychometric characteristics of a frequently-used and well-validated symptom validity test (the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) and b) to …

Modeling The Cumulative Effects Of Forest Fire On Watershed Hydrology: A Post-Fire Application Of The Distributed Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation Model (Dhsvm), Crystal S. Stonesifer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Distributed Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation Model (DHSVM) was applied to the Eightmile Creek watershed in western Montana. The purpose of this research was primarily to assess the applicability of the model as a cumulative effects assessment tool in the post-fire landscape of a forested watershed in this region. The model was first calibrated to the pre-fire watershed conditions using six years of historic streamflow data. DHSVM was able to accurately simulate the general shape of the measured hydrograph for each of the six simulated water years, and the normalized median absolute error statistics were below the target threshold of 50% for each …

Organizing Rural Communities For Effective Citizen Science Programs, Anna Dean Holden Jan 2007

Organizing Rural Communities For Effective Citizen Science Programs, Anna Dean Holden

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Citizen science, or the use of volunteers for scientific projects, is becoming a popular way for agencies and organizations to collect data. The benefits of citizen science include saving the agency or organization resources, educating the community about conservation issues, and promoting land stewardship. Currently, many citizen monitoring organizations are based in urban areas, whereas their projects are located near more rural towns. Research shows that demographics such as area of residence can be a factor in the public’s attitude toward any scientific or land management project (Williams et al, 2002; Kellert, 1978, 1985; Vaske et al, 2001). This fact …

Predicting Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea Maculosa) Range Expansion Near Missoula Montana Using Localized Climate And Elevation Data, William Frank Preston Cumming Jan 2007

Predicting Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea Maculosa) Range Expansion Near Missoula Montana Using Localized Climate And Elevation Data, William Frank Preston Cumming

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since the 1920s spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa) has adapted to a variety of habitats, including pastureland, rangeland, hay land, open forests, road sides, and ditches. In 2003 this plant species dominated more than five million acres in Montana, half of the total infestation of noxious weeds in the state. This project demonstrates the utility of using downscaled Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) data for predicting vegetation movement within a 2°×2° geographical area surrounding Missoula County, Montana. This localized climate change data was correlated against current knapweed range using validation data from the Volunteer for Wilderness Program at the …

Remote Sensing Applications To Support Sustainable Natural Resource Management, Charles Kenneth Brewer Jan 2007

Remote Sensing Applications To Support Sustainable Natural Resource Management, Charles Kenneth Brewer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The original design of this dissertation project was relatively simple and straightforward. It was intended to produce one single, dynamic, classification and mapping system for existing vegetation that could rely on commonly available inventory and remote sensing data. This classification and mapping system was intended to provide the analytical basis for resource planning and management. The problems encountered during the first phase of the original design transformed this project into an extensive analysis of the nature of these problems and a decade-long remote sensing applications development endeavor. What evolved from this applications development process is a portion of what has …

Repair And Effects Of The 8-Oxog Lesion In Dna, James Joseph Covino Jan 2007

Repair And Effects Of The 8-Oxog Lesion In Dna, James Joseph Covino

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Eukaryotic DNA is packaged in a condensed state with histone proteins. The minimal structural unit within packaged eukaryotic DNA is the nucleosome core particle (NCP). The NCP consists of a 146 bp DNA fragment wrapped around an octamer of histone core proteins. Nucleosome core particle formation induces DNA structural changes and reduced DNA accessibility providing a very different setting than that commonly modeled by in vitro studies. In vitro reconstituted NCP provide a controlled environment that more closely models eukaryotic DNA than studies using naked DNA. Reconstituted NCP studies of DNA damage have exhibited a spectrum of effects compared to …

Succession Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: Causes, Consequences, And Considerations, Jeffrey Scott Piotrowski Jan 2007

Succession Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: Causes, Consequences, And Considerations, Jeffrey Scott Piotrowski

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are soil fungi associations with the majority of terrestrial plants. These fungi may affect a wide range of ecosystem processes from primary productivity to soil stabilization. Understanding the patterns and controls of AMF abundance during succession soil will be critical to predicting and managing ecosystem development. The work presented in chapter 2 is the first to describe changes in the abundance of mycorrhizal types during development of an unregulated floodplain. These findings are important to floodplain regulation and management strategies as they suggest that flow regulation that limits early site formation will limit the ecosystem contributions …

An Application And Defense Of Ronald Dworkin's Theory Of Adjudication, Vincent William Wisniewski Jr. Jan 2007

An Application And Defense Of Ronald Dworkin's Theory Of Adjudication, Vincent William Wisniewski Jr.

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Laws are intended to put individuals on notice as to how they should act in society and what behavior they may expect from others. But what happens when the text of a law is vague and open to multiple interpretations? How can individuals be expected to conform to laws when the laws are unclear as to what they demand? If the law is to retain legitimacy, there must be a principled way of determining what the law requires in these so-called “hard cases.” Ronald Dworkin argues that if interpretation is not constrained, adjudicators are creating the law rather than simply …

Verb Contraction In The West Saxon Dialect Of Old English: An Optimality Theory Account, Melinda Mix Jan 2007

Verb Contraction In The West Saxon Dialect Of Old English: An Optimality Theory Account, Melinda Mix

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The phenomena of verb contraction in the West Saxon dialect of Old English has been described in many grammars of the language. However, most of these use a traditional rule-based analysis of the sound changes which occur. This thesis re-analyzes the data in terms of Optimality Theory (OT), which uses a system of constraint ranking to account for sound changes. The advantage of using OT is that it offers a single ranking to explain sound changes that would require separate rules and ordering in a more traditional analysis. Section 1 introduces the motivation for approaching this data from OT. Section …

Self-Report Measures Of Psychopathic And Schizotypal Personality Characteristics: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Characteristics Of Antisocial Behavior And Hypothetical Psychosis-Proneness In A College Sample, Amber Nicole Bonogofsky Jan 2007

Self-Report Measures Of Psychopathic And Schizotypal Personality Characteristics: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Characteristics Of Antisocial Behavior And Hypothetical Psychosis-Proneness In A College Sample, Amber Nicole Bonogofsky

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study separated the constructs of hypothetical psychopathy and hypothetical psychosis-proneness by performing Confirmatory Factor Analyses on different proposed factor structures of both psychopathic and schizotypic subclinical symptoms using data from a college sample. The study validated and provided evidence for existing structures of each construct. Research showed that the constructs overlap in their factor structures, as do their measures, although psychopathy and schizotypy are most likely distinct constructs. As conceptualized by Dr. Robert Hare, originator of the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R; 2003), psychopathy reflects two interrelated but distinct factors of symptoms. The first symptom factor (Factor 1) reflects the …

The Importance Of Individual And Population Variation To Human Stature Estimation, Kelly Jean Shields Jan 2007

The Importance Of Individual And Population Variation To Human Stature Estimation, Kelly Jean Shields

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Human stature estimation is a central part of forensic anthropological investigation. It is one of several factors used to identify unknown individuals. The statistical relationship between body length and body segment length allows for long bone lengths from an unidentified individual to be used in a linear regression equation to estimate living stature. These linear regression equations are often formulated from a data set of an entirely different population. This research explores the necessity for the unknown individual to be similar on a number of points to the known population that makes up the equation. Populations are highly variable, and …

Hormonal Mediation Of A Unique Behavioral Polymorphism In The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Meredith Bettencourt Swett Jan 2007

Hormonal Mediation Of A Unique Behavioral Polymorphism In The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Meredith Bettencourt Swett

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this body of work, I examine how testosterone (T) physiology mediates the life-history trade-off between mating effort and parental care in the White-throated Sparrow. This species exhibits a behavioral polymorphism that occurs in both sexes. White-striped (WS) morphs are more territorially aggressive, sing more frequently and seek more extra-pair copulations. Tan-striped (TS) morphs provision nestlings more frequently. Thus this species roughly illustrates the trade-off between mating effort and parental care. I examine T physiology on three levels: plasma titres, binding globulins and response to the social environment. I ask whether levels of T correlate with morph-specific behavior and does …

Sedimentary Legacy Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) And Climate Change In An Ultra-Oligotrophic, Glacially-Turbid British Columbia Nursery Lake, Aaron C. Hill Jan 2007

Sedimentary Legacy Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) And Climate Change In An Ultra-Oligotrophic, Glacially-Turbid British Columbia Nursery Lake, Aaron C. Hill

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Anadromous Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) populations are strongly regulated by climatic regimes and human activities across numerous spatial and temporal scales. The carcasses of adults returning to spawn provide important marine derived nutrients (MDN) to freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems through multiple trophic pathways. Sockeye salmon (O. nerka) rear extensively in lakes and recent studies of sockeye nursery lake sediments in Alaska have used indicators of spawner density (ä15N) and algal production (fossil pigments and diatoms) to show that lake trophic status is often regulated by climate and harvest via MDN from adult spawners. However, the strength of these controls and …

Lithologic And Hydrogeologic Controls On The Occurrence, Transport, And Fate Of Mtbe In Fine Grained Glacial-Lacustrine Sediments, Mary Kathryn Sutherland Jan 2007

Lithologic And Hydrogeologic Controls On The Occurrence, Transport, And Fate Of Mtbe In Fine Grained Glacial-Lacustrine Sediments, Mary Kathryn Sutherland

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In April of 1994, a leaking 60,480L gasoline underground storage tank was removed from George’s Conoco in Ronan, Montana. Investigations discovered a free product plume extending under Highway 93, with dissolved phase contamination (including MTBE) extending 460 m west to Spring Creek. Though geochemical sampling has established the general plume extent, the influence of aquifer heterogeneities on plume position and transport behavior is poorly described. The purpose of this work is to characterize the physical controls on plume migration. In addition to standard well installation and geochemical sampling, geotechnical tools including cone penetration testing (CPT) and Membrane Interface Probe (MIP), …

Detrital-Zircon Geochronologic Provenance Analyses That Test And Expand The East Siberia - West Laurentia Rodinia Reconstruction, John Stuart Maclean Jan 2007

Detrital-Zircon Geochronologic Provenance Analyses That Test And Expand The East Siberia - West Laurentia Rodinia Reconstruction, John Stuart Maclean

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Laurentia's position in the Neoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia is a topic of continuing debate. Several reconstructions involving Laurentia and Siberia have been proposed, including the east Siberia-west Laurentia connection. The east Siberia-west Laurentia Rodinia reconstruction includes lithostratigraphic correlations of conjugate rift miogeocline sediments located in SE Siberia and SW Laurentia. To constrain provenance relationships and to quantitatively test correlations, we determined detrital-zircon age spectra from samples from the Sette Daban Range of SE Siberia and the Death Valley and White-Inyo regions of SW Laurentia using SHRIMP and LAICPMS. Data indicate that several Siberian samples contain zircons correlative with Laurentian sources, and …

The Effect Of Orientation-Neutral Cursors On Movement Time, Positioning Performance, And Stimulus-Response (S-R) Compatibility, Kim Joachim Oehmichen Jan 2007

The Effect Of Orientation-Neutral Cursors On Movement Time, Positioning Performance, And Stimulus-Response (S-R) Compatibility, Kim Joachim Oehmichen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Very little research exists on the topic of computer cursor design and utilization. Since this is an important area in successful and efficient user interaction with graphical user interfaces, additional study is necessary. To investigate the impact of cursors with no implicit directional cues (orientation-neutral cursors) on movement time, positioning performance, and stimulus-response compatibility, six experiments were designed. In these experiments, six orientation-neutral cursors were compared against each other as well as against four directional cursors. Twelve participants with advanced computer skills between the ages of 18 and 30, right-handed, and normal or corrected-to-normal eyesight participated in the experiments, which …

Comparison Of Strategies For The Constraint Determination Of Simulink Models, Charles Joseph Alex Jan 2007

Comparison Of Strategies For The Constraint Determination Of Simulink Models, Charles Joseph Alex

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The Simulink environment allows rapid prototyping of complex software systems. Because many of these systems are mission-critical, it is of utmost importance to determine their input and output constraints. Determining input constraints is a trivial matter, but the constraint determination of a system's output values is a serious and challenging problem that historically has entailed an exhaustive exploration of the system's input states. The work presented in this thesis recounts and extends a research project supported by NASA whose focus was to develop a strategy to constrain the outputs of a Simulink model. Simulink models are quite similar to mathematical …

Democratic Administration In The United States Forest Service, Nancy Leigh Leifer Jan 2007

Democratic Administration In The United States Forest Service, Nancy Leigh Leifer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Pluralism, the dominant theory in citizen involvement in the United States Forest Service since the 1950s, has prolonged the process of determining the public interest by promoting the use of appeals and lawsuits. The advent of more collaborative public involvement strategies in the past fifteen years offers the opportunity to assess whether participatory democracy offers a better paradigm for determining the public interest. This research focused on four cases of reported successful collaboration in Region One of the Forest Service and involved in-person interviews with 17 Forest Service officials and 24 citizen and interest group leaders. The researcher translated pluralist …

Influence Of Embryonic Metabolic Rate And Incubation Temperature On Incubation Length Variation In Neotropical Passerines, Alina Maria Niklison Jan 2007

Influence Of Embryonic Metabolic Rate And Incubation Temperature On Incubation Length Variation In Neotropical Passerines, Alina Maria Niklison

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Variation in embryonic developmental periods influences fitness, but causes of interspecific variation are poorly understood. Allometry, for example, does not explain variation in incubation periods among neotropical passerines. Incubation temperature can explain some variation in developmental periods, but substantial variation remains unexplained. Here we examine two previously untested alternatives. Adult metabolic rates differ among species and similar differences among embryos may explain some variation in embryonic development rates; higher metabolism may allow faster cellular proliferation. Alternatively, metabolic rates are temperature dependent, and metabolic rates might respond differentially to temperature among species and compensate for differing incubation temperatures. These alternatives are …

Managing Multiple Identities: A Qualitative Study Of Nurses And Implications For Work-Family Balance, Claire Marie Spanier Jan 2007

Managing Multiple Identities: A Qualitative Study Of Nurses And Implications For Work-Family Balance, Claire Marie Spanier

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The ways in which people manage organizational, professional, and familial identities can have significant implications for work-family balance. This is particularly true for nurses, who have a strong sense of professional identity and may be likely to experience work-family tensions. By framing work-family tensions as related to identity, we can see the ways in which being a “good” employee, a “good” nurse, and a “good” family member are both complementary and contradictory. This study highlights ways in which being “good” employee facilitates and hinders an individual’s ability to be a “good” nurse. Furthermore, it demonstrates how being a “good” nurse …

Estimating Site Productivity From Non-Site Trees: A Site Index Based Approach, Charles Edward Vopicka Jan 2007

Estimating Site Productivity From Non-Site Trees: A Site Index Based Approach, Charles Edward Vopicka

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Site index (SI) is an indirect measure of potential site quality that is widely used in the Inland Northwest. However, a serious problem exists in applying site curves in the Inland Northwest due to a shortage of suitable 'site' trees. Site trees are explicitly defined for any given set of site index curves; generally the trees must be dominant or co-dominant and must exhibit characteristics that indicate the tree has been able to grow in height at its potential rate. Due to uneven-aged forest conditions and past selective harvest practices, it can be difficult to find trees that meet the …
