it. Though research has grown greatly on this topic, there is a gap related to gender and fantasy sport. Data was collected utilizing qualitative open-ended questions. Major themes emerged indicating that women perceive the overall experience to be (a) too time consuming, (b) an old boys club, (c) too much work looking up statistics, (d) potentially fun. …

Entrepreneurship And Competitive Dog Sports, Brenda A. Riemer, Erica J. Zonder, Jeanne L. Thomas

Global Sport Business Journal

Entrepreneurs are inherently innovative, in that they shape their business -- and perhaps even create a market niche (Kumar, 2007). The present study explored motivations of women entrepreneurs in a specific arena -- competitive dog sports – in the context of the economic recession in the United States in the early 21st century. Eight entrepreneurs were interviewed for the study. Five themes emerged from the interview transcripts: “Entrepreneur as participant”, “entrepreneur as a secondary income”, “deliberation versus plunge”, “entrepreneurship and family”, and “growth and maintenance in a recession”. The participants also indicated that for them to be successful entrepreneurs, they …

Sponsors of NCAA Division I conferences often have limited access to activation opportunities within members’ sports venues, limiting their reach to team fans. One purpose of this study was to determine if recognition rates of conference sponsors differ between sporting events held at campus sites and at a conference-wide tournament held at a neutral location. A second purpose was to determine if the perception of a conference’s strength impacted spectators’ intent to purchase conference sponsor products. A total of 3,142 surveys were collected from spectators at school sites and the post-season basketball tournament of an NCAA Division I conference. Results …

Increasing Response Rate With Sport Volunteer Studies: A Social Exchange Theory Approach, Chrysostomos Giannaoulakis, Elizabeth Wanless, Shea Brgoch

Global Sport Business Journal

Successful sport volunteer management demands retaining volunteers from year to year and gaining feedback with respect to their experience. It is common for sport event volunteers’ psychometric characteristics to be assessed via on-site questionnaire. A well-designed questionnaire is crucial for improving response rate and increasing the quality of collected data. An adequate response rate is not only vital for meaningful interpretation of survey results, but also critical for acquiring a broad range of perspectives. The majority of research concerning response rate has focused on phone, mail, or web-surveys. Relatively little is known about the combination of techniques that could be …

Stadium screens around the globe – such as the 2013 arrivals of the massive scoreboards at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia or the JumboTron at Reliant Stadium in the United States – are increasingly an integral part of the sport event experience. This study, which postulates that stadium screens go beyond television, defines the huge screens as sport-mediated screens and explains their characteristics from theoretical, spatial, time, and functional perspectives. The stadium, as the mixed reality in which real space and mediated space coexist, is a new arena for cultural interface. As a representative media platform in the stadium, …

Women continue to be underrepresented in both management positions in sport as well as sport management academic degree programs. Despite the increase in the number of women participating in sport at the high school and college levels as well as the increase of women pursuing non-traditional academic majors, a disparity remains. This qualitative study utilized focus groups of female sport management undergraduates to examine their perceptions of the academic environment and their degrees. Results indicate women perceive there to be a lack of information about the sport management degree, a concern regarding outsider’s perceptions of the degree, and a chilly …

The Impact Of Need For Uniqueness, Loyalty Proneness, And Identification On The Likelihood Of Brand Extension Purchases, Stephen Ross, Patrick Walsh, Megan B. Shreffler

Global Sport Business Journal

As sport organizations seek new ways to generate revenue and interact with their fans, brand extensions will continue to be a popular strategy to do so. While research has examined how consumers evaluate brand extensions in sport, little is known as to what impacts a consumer’s decision to purchase team related extensions. This study examined the impact on potential brand extension purchase of three factors suggested to influence consumer purchase behavior (need for uniqueness, loyalty proneness and identification). Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) was used to collect 509 useable surveys though a paper-based instrument. The results of the study suggest that of …

Global Sport Business Journal

This study employed a content analysis to determine the frames utilized by American professional athletes on Twitter, and if differences existed in the employment of frames across gender. The 100 most recent tweets from 18 professional athletes, nine male and nine female, participating in the 2012 London Olympics were analyzed to investigate frame utilization. Analysis revealed no statistical difference in frame utilization across gender, and the primary utilization of the frame of athlete as an everyday individual by both sets of athletes, which aligns with traditional feminine gender roles. These results both support and counter the framing of male and …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Corporate Sponsorships At A Minor League Baseball Park, Christopher L. Moore, Andrew J. Mowen, Benjamin D. Hickerson Jan 2013

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Corporate Sponsorships At A Minor League Baseball Park, Christopher L. Moore, Andrew J. Mowen, Benjamin D. Hickerson

Global Sport Business Journal

Corporate sponsorships are vital to the success of minor league sport businesses. As competition for sponsorships intensifies in these venues, there is a need for minor league sports to demonstrate a return on the sponsorship investment based on fan purchase intentions and behaviors. Prior research has identified fan involvement, goodwill, and sponsor attitudes as key predictors of fan purchase intentions. However, the potential of image transfer suggests that attitudes toward sport properties might also shape purchase intentions. This study replicates and extends prior sport sponsorship research by assessing the contribution of these constructs to fan purchase intentions at a Minor …

As social media use by professional sport teams continues to grow, understanding who is using these outlets is crucial in order to best communicate with users. What has yet to be thoroughly examined is gender differences in usage of team Twitter feeds. By surveying fans from a variety of teams, this study examined gender differences in ratings of informational, commercial, and social interactions with the team’s Twitter feed, along with examining any demographic differences and usage of social-media enabled smartphones. Contrary to what previous research on sport media consumption would suggest, females rated nearly all Twitter functions at higher levels …

Creating Value At A Free Sporting Event: More Than Price, Todd Hall, Charles Jones Jan 2013

Creating Value At A Free Sporting Event: More Than Price, Todd Hall, Charles Jones

Global Sport Business Journal

In an environment where intercollegiate athletic directors are increasingly dealing with pressure to increase revenues, identifying and capitalizing on new sources of revenue can provide an unexpected benefit. However, when tradition dictates that spectators enter sport competitions free of charge, administrators must carefully weigh the outcomes of generating additional revenue against alienating fans who have come to expect certain levels of access to sporting events. Multiattribute theory (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) states that products and services are often comprised of many features or attributes making them more, or less desirable. In this study, a self-explicated conjoint analysis was employed to …

Athletic departments in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) universities provide academic support services to student-athletes. Even though student-athletes receive career assistance from academic counselors, some studies have found they are behind non-athletes in career development. This study examines the relationship between athletic identity and career identity in student-athletes in comparison with non-athletes, between genders of student-athletes, and between earlier and later years in college for student-athletes using multiple instruments: Athletic Identity Measurement Scale; Vocational Identity Scale of the My Vocational Situation; and the Occupational Engagement Scale-Student. Using responses from 109 student-athletes and 277 non-athletes, this study found that no relationship existed …
