Fully grown mammalian oocytes store a large amount of RNA synthesized during the transcriptionally active growth stage. A large part of the stored RNA belongs to the long non-coding class which contain either transcriptional noise or important contributors to cellular physiology. Despite the expanding number of studies related to lncRNAs, their influence on oocyte physiology remains enigmatic. We found an oocyte specific antisense, long non-coding RNA, “Rose” (lncRNA in Oocyte Specifically Expressed) expressed in two variants containing two and three non-coding exons, respectively. Rose is localized in the nucleus of transcriptionally active oocyte and in embryo with polysomal occupancy in …

Research about the effectiveness of nutrition interventions in low-income populations is limited, particularly for those in rural areas. Behavioral economics (BE) strategies demonstrate effectiveness for improving eating behaviors in some settings. However, the efficacy of BE interventions in retail food stores serving low-income populations residing in rural and urban geographies is nascent. Objective: This systematic literature review aims to identify and compare nutrition interventions implemented in rural and urban low-income retail food stores, including BE strategies when applied. Methods: This review was conducted …

Beyond “Children Are Different”: The Revolution In Juvenile Intake And Sentencing, Josh Gupta-Kagan Jun 2021

Beyond “Children Are Different”: The Revolution In Juvenile Intake And Sentencing, Josh Gupta-Kagan

Faculty Publications

For more than 120 years, juvenile justice law has not substantively defined the core questions in most delinquency cases—when should the state prosecute children rather than divert them from the court system (the intake decision), and what should the state do with children once they are convicted (the sentencing decision)? Instead, the law has granted certain legal actors wide discretion over these decisions, namely prosecutors at intake and judges at sentencing. This Article identifies and analyzes an essential reform trend changing that reality: legislation, enacted in at least eight states in the 2010s, to limit when children can be prosecuted …

Broadband Infrared Photodetection Using A Narrow Bandgap Conjugated Polymer, Jarrett H. Vella, Lifeng Huang, Naresh Eedugurala, Kevin S. Mayer, Tse Nga Ng, Jason D. Azoulay

Faculty Publications

Photodetection spanning the short-, mid-, and long-wave infrared (SWIR-LWIR) underpins modern science and technology. Devices using state-of-the-art narrow bandgap semiconductors require complex manufacturing, high costs, and cooling requirements that remain prohibitive for many applications. We report high-performance infrared photodetection from a donor-acceptor conjugated polymer with broadband SWIR-LWIR operation. Electronic correlations within the π-conjugated backbone promote a high-spin ground state, narrow bandgap, long-wavelength absorption, and intrinsic electrical conductivity. These previously unobserved attributes enabled the fabrication of a thin-film photoconductive detector from solution, which demonstrates specific detectivities greater than 2.10 × 109 Jones. These room temperature detectivities closely approach those of …

Short-Term Impacts Of 2017 Western North American Wildfires On Meteorology, The Atmosphere's Energy Budget, And Premature Mortality, Diana N. Bernstein, Douglas S. Hamilton, Rosalie Krasnoff, Natalie M. Mahowald, David S. Connelly, Simone Tilmes, Peter G.M. Hess

Faculty Publications

Western North American fires have been increasing in magnitude and severity over the last few decades. The complex coupling of fires with the atmospheric energy budget and meteorology creates short-term feedbacks on regional weather altering the amount of pollution to which Americans are exposed. Using a combination of model simulations and observations, this study shows that the severe fires in the summer of 2017 increased atmospheric aerosol concentrations leading to a cooling of the air at the surface, reductions in sensible heat fluxes, and a lowering of the planetary boundary layer height over land. This combination of lower-boundary layer height …

The Status Of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) As A Technologically Feasible Species For U.S. Marine Aquaculture, Reginald Blaylock, Eric Saillant, Angelos Apeitos, David Abrego, Paul Cason, Robert Vega

Faculty Publications

Culture models and facilities for large-scale, commercial production of popular Gulf of Mexico species are unavailable. The spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) is one of the most popular recreational fishes in the Gulf of Mexico. Seatrout culture techniques were adapted from red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) protocols developed in the 1970s. Broodstock husbandry, spawning, and extensive pond rearing techniques using fertilized and bloomed brackish ponds were well-established by the 1980s. By 2018, approximately 80 million 25–30-day old seatrout had been produced, mainly for stock enhancement. Cannibalism and poor nutrition hindered intensive tank culture. Between 2005 and 2015, an …

Inferring Single-Cell 3d Chromosomal Structures Based On The Lennard-Jones Potential, Mengsheng Zha, Nan Wang, Chaoyang Zhang, Zheng Wang

Faculty Publications

Reconstructing three‐dimensional (3D) chromosomal structures based on single‐cell Hi‐C data is a challenging scientific problem due to the extreme sparseness of the single‐cell Hi‐C data. In this research, we used the Lennard‐Jones potential to reconstruct both 500 kb and high‐resolution 50 kb chromosomal structures based on single‐cell Hi‐C data. A chromosome was represented by a string of 500 kb or 50 kb DNA beads and put into a 3D cubic lattice for simulations. A 2D Gaussian function was used to impute the sparse single‐cell Hi‐C contact matrices. We designed a novel loss function based on the Lennard‐Jones potential, in which …

Control Of A Natural Gas Liquid Recovery Plant In A Gsp Unit Under Feed And Composition Disturbances, Marta Mandis, Jorge A. Chebeir, Stefania Tronci, Roberto Baratti, José A. Romagnoli

Faculty Publications

Recent technological improvements have driven the rapid increase in natural gas production from unconventional reservoirs. The heaviest hydrocarbon fraction of this fossil fuel, the so-called natural gas liquids (NGL), have greater economic interest justifying the attention on its separation process from the raw gas. Various process schemes have been developed and studied for the NGL recovery, including the conventional, cold residue recycle (CRR), and the gas subcooled process (GSP). This study aims to assess different control strategies for a GSP unit and determine the most appropriate and effective process control scheme. For this, the dynamic responses for each control scheme …

Quantitative Prediction Of Rapid Solidification By Integrated Atomistic And Phase-Field Modeling, Sepideh Kavousi, Brian R. Novak, Dorel Moldovan, Mohsen Asle Zaeem

Faculty Publications

Systematic integration of atomistic simulations with phase-field modeling is presented for quantitative predictions of cellular growth and solute trapping during solidification of alloys for solidification velocities relevant to additive manufacturing. For parametrization of the phase-field model, molecular dynamics simulations are utilized as an alternative to complex experiments to obtain the anisotropic crystal-melt interface free energy, kinetic coefficient, and diffusive interface velocity. The accuracy of this integrated model is tested for rapid solidification of Ti-3.4at.%Ni alloy. The predicted solute trapping of the proposed phase-field model is comparable with the continuous growth model for solidification velocities of additive manufacturing. The predicted primary …

Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Recognition Of Armored Vehicles, Christopher Szul, Torrey J. Wagner, Brent T. Langhals

Faculty Publications

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is not affected by weather and allows for day-and-night observations, however it can be difficult to interpret. This work applies classical and neural network machine learning techniques to perform image classification of SAR imagery. The Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition dataset from the Air Force Research Laboratory was used, which contained 2,987 total observations of the BMP-2, BTR-70, and T-72 vehicles. Using a 75%/25% train/test split, the classical model achieved an average multi-class image recognition accuracy of 70%, while a convolutional neural network was able to achieve a 97% accuracy with lower model …

Prioritizing Facilities Linked To Corporate Strategic Objectives Using A Fuzzy Model, Devin Depalmer, Steven J. Schuldt, Justin D. Delorit Jun 2021

Prioritizing Facilities Linked To Corporate Strategic Objectives Using A Fuzzy Model, Devin Depalmer, Steven J. Schuldt, Justin D. Delorit

Faculty Publications

Excerpt: Limited facilities operating and modernization budgets require organizations to carefully identify, prioritize and authorize projects to ensure allocated resources align with strategic objectives. Traditional facility prioritization methods using risk matrices can be improved to increase granularity in categorization and avoid mathematical error or human cognitive biases. These limitations restrict the utility of prioritizations and if erroneously used to select projects for funding, they can lead to wasted resources. This paper aims to propose a novel facility prioritization methodology that corrects these assessment design and implementation issues.

First Data On Aquaculture Of The Tripletail, Lobotes Surinamensis, A Promising Candidate Species For U.S. Marine Aquaculture, Eric Saillant, Nicholas Adams, Jason T. Lemus, James S. Franks, Yonathan Zohar, John Stubblefield, Christopher Manley

Faculty Publications

The Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, is a warm-water pelagic fish that is increasingly targeted by U.S. anglers. The superior quality of Tripletail flesh coupled with the lack of domestic commercial fisheries stimulated interests to develop aquaculture of this species. In this work, photo-thermal conditioning of captive-held broodstocks promoted maturation in females, but spontaneous spawning was not observed. GnRHa slow-release implants induced ovulation in late vitellogenic females but fertility remained below 10% when GnRHa was administered alone. However, spawns with high fertility (up to 85%) were obtained when a dopamine antagonist was administered in conjunction with GnRHa implants indicating dopamine inhibition …

Illustrating Important Effects Of Second-Order Sensitivities On Response Uncertainties In Reactor Physics, Dan Gabriel Cacuci Jun 2021

Illustrating Important Effects Of Second-Order Sensitivities On Response Uncertainties In Reactor Physics, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This paper illustrates the relative importance of the largest first- and second-order sensitivities of the leakage response of an OECD/NEA reactor physics benchmark (a polyethylene-reflected plutonium sphere) to the benchmark’s underlying total cross sections. It will be shown that numerous 2nd-order sensitivities of the leakage response with respect to the total cross sections are significantly larger than the largest corresponding 1st-order sensitivities. In particular, the contributions of the 2nd-order sensitivities cause the mean (expected) value of the response to differ appreciably from its computed value and also cause the response distribution to be skewed towards positive values relative to the …

Reliable Mode Tracking In Gradient-Based Optimization Frameworks With Flutter Constraints, Taylor Mcdonnell, Andrew Ning Jun 2021

Reliable Mode Tracking In Gradient-Based Optimization Frameworks With Flutter Constraints, Taylor Mcdonnell, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

In order to construct mode-specific flutter constraints for use in gradient-based multidisciplinary design optimization frameworks, mode tracking must be used to associate the current iteration’s modes with the modes corresponding to each constraint function. Existing mode tracking methods, however, do not provide a method by which to ensure the accuracy of mode associations, making them unsuitable for use in situations where obtaining correct mode associations is critical. To remedy this issue, a new mode tracking method is presented which incorporates backtracking logic in order to maintain an arbitrarily high degree of confidence in mode correlations during gradient-based optimization and/or during …
