Trumpism, Climate And Covid: Social Bases Of The New Science Rejection, Lawrence C. Hamilton Aug 2022

Trumpism, Climate And Covid: Social Bases Of The New Science Rejection, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

Generalized structural equation modeling (GSEM) of 2021 US survey data tests Trumpism (approval of ex-president Trump) as an emergent political-identity indicator, descendant from the classical divisions by party and ideology but exerting its own distinct influence on two existentially important cases of science rejection: the reality of anthropogenic climate change (ACC), and vaccination against COVID-19.

Faculty Publications

Water table depth and vegetation are key controls of methane (CH4) emissions from peatlands. Microtopography integrates these factors into features called microforms. Microforms often differ in CH4 emissions, but microform-dependent patterns of belowground CH4 cycling remain less clearly resolved. To investigate the impact of microtopography on belowground CH4 cycling, we characterized depth profiles of the community composition and activity of CH4-cycling microbes using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, incubations, and measurements of porewater CH4 concentration and isotopic composition from hummocks and lawns at Sallie's Fen in NH, USA. Geochemical proxies of methanogenesis and methanotrophy indicated that microforms differ in dominant microbial …

Renormalization Scheme Dependence Of Β-Functions In Lorentz-Violating Quantum Field Theory, Sapan Karki, Brett David Altschul Aug 2022

Renormalization Scheme Dependence Of Β-Functions In Lorentz-Violating Quantum Field Theory, Sapan Karki, Brett David Altschul

Faculty Publications

Effective quantum field theories that allow for the possibility of Lorentz symmetry violation can sometimes also include redundancies of description in their Lagrangians. Explicit calculations in a Lorentz-violating generalization of Yukawa theory show that when this kind of redundancy exists, different renormalization schemes may lead to different expressions for the renormalization group β-functions, even at only one-loop order. However, the renormalization group scaling of physically observable quantities appears not to share this kind of scheme dependence.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap)-Authorised Store Marketing Environments In Louisiana Encourage The Selection Of Less Nutritious Foods And Beverages, Bailey Houghtaling, Melissa Cater, Nila Pradhananga, Denise Holston

Faculty Publications

Marketing influences consumers’ dietary purchases. However, little is known about marketing environments in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-authorised stores. The present study explored SNAP-authorised store marketing environments in Louisiana by rurality, store ownership and store type (n 42). Sampling methods were designed to include randomly selected stores in each geographic area of the state. The GroPromo was used to measure placement, promotion, and child-focused aspects of marketing strategies used for healthier (fruits and vegetables) and less healthy products (chips, candy, sugar-sweetened beverages, child-focused cereal) in medium- and high-prominence marketing areas. In using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) (P < 0⋅05) for data analysis, variations in GroPromo scores were found among SNAP-authorised stores by rurality (P < 0⋅05) and store ownership (P < 0⋅001); no differences were found by store type (P > 0⋅05). Future …

Generative Design Of Stable Semiconductor Materials Using Deep Learning And Density Functional Theory, Edirisuriya M. Dilanga Siriwardane, Yong Zhao, Indika Perera, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

Semiconductor device technology has greatly developed in complexity since discovering the bipolar transistor. In this work, we developed a computational pipeline to discover stable semiconductors by combining generative adversarial networks (GAN), classifiers, and high-throughput first-principles calculations. We used CubicGAN, a GAN-based algorithm for generating cubic materials and developed a classifier to screen the semiconductors and studied their stability using first principles. We found 12 stable AA’ MH6 semiconductors in the F-43m space group including BaNaRhH6, BaSrZnH6, BaCsAlH6, SrTlIrH6, KNaNiH6, NaYRuH6, CsKSiH6, CaScMnH6, YZnMnH …

A Primer On The Factories Of The Future, Noble Anumbe, Clint Saidy, Ramy Harik Aug 2022

A Primer On The Factories Of The Future, Noble Anumbe, Clint Saidy, Ramy Harik

Faculty Publications

In a dynamic and rapidly changing world, customers’ often conflicting demands have continued to evolve, outstripping the ability of the traditional factory to address modern-day production challenges. To fix these challenges, several manufacturing paradigms have been proposed. Some of these have monikers such as the smart factory, intelligent factory, digital factory, and cloud-based factory. Due to a lack of consensus on general nomenclature, the term Factory of the Future (or Future Factory) has been used in this paper as a collective euphemism for these paradigms. The Factory of the Future constitutes a creative convergence of multiple technologies, techniques, and capabilities …

Hydrodynamic And Biochemical Impacts On The Development Of Hypoxia In The Louisiana-Texas Shelf - Part 2: Statistical Modeling And Hypoxia Prediction, Yanda Ou, Bin Li, Z. George Xue

Faculty Publications

This study presents a novel ensemble regression model for forecasts of the hypoxic area (HA) in the Louisiana-Texas (LaTex) shelf. The ensemble model combines a zero-inflated Poisson generalized linear model (GLM) and a quasi-Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) and considers predictors with hydrodynamic and biochemical features. Both models were trained and calibrated using the daily hindcast (2007-2020) by a three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model embedded in the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Compared to the ROMS hindcasts, the ensemble model yields a low root-mean-square error (RMSE) (3256 km2), a high R2 (0.7721), and low mean absolute percentage biases for overall (29%) …

Nuclear war would produce dire global consequences for humans and our environment. We simulated climate impacts of US-Russia and India-Pakistan nuclear wars in an Earth System Model, here, we report on the ocean impacts. Like volcanic eruptions and large forest fires, firestorms from nuclear war would transport light-blocking aerosols to the stratosphere, resulting in global cooling. The ocean responds over two timescales: a rapid cooling event and a long recovery, indicating a hysteresis response of the ocean to global cooling. Surface cooling drives sea ice expansion, enhanced meridional overturning, and intensified ocean vertical mixing that is expanded, deeper, and longer …

Atmospheric soot loadings from nuclear weapon detonation would cause disruptions to the Earth’s climate, limiting terrestrial and aquatic food production. Here, we use climate, crop and fishery models to estimate the impacts arising from six scenarios of stratospheric soot injection, predicting the total food calories available in each nation post-war after stored food is consumed. In quantifying impacts away from target areas, we demonstrate that soot injections larger than 5 Tg would lead to mass food shortages, and livestock and aquatic food production would be unable to compensate for reduced crop output, in almost all countries. Adaptation measures such as …

Numerical Experiments Of Temperature Mixing And Post-Storm Re-Stratification Over The Louisiana Shelf During Hurricane Katrina (2005), Mohammad Nabi Allahdadi, Chunyan Li, Nazanin Chaichitehrani

Faculty Publications

Studying mixing and re-stratification during and after hurricanes have important implications for the simulation of circulation and bio-geochemical processes in oceanic and shelf waters. Numerical experiments using FVCOM on an unstructured computational mesh were implemented to study the direct effect of hurricane winds on the mixing and temperature redistribution of the stratified Louisiana shelf during Hurricane Katrina (2005), as well as the post-storm re-stratification timescale. The model was forced by Katrina’s wind stress obtained from a combination of H-Wind database and NCEP model. The climatological profiles of temperature and salinity for August (the month in which Katrina occurred) from the …

Rectifying Wrongful Convictions Through The Dormant Grand Jury Clause, Colin Miller Aug 2022

Rectifying Wrongful Convictions Through The Dormant Grand Jury Clause, Colin Miller

Faculty Publications

In 1995, Lamar Johnson was convicted of a murder in St. Louis. Twenty-two years later, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner created a Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) to review possible wrongful convictions. After reviewing Johnson’s case, the CIU concluded that Johnson was innocent. Then, consistent with her special responsibility as a prosecutor to seek to remedy wrongful convictions, Gardner filed a motion for a new trial. The court, however, denied the motion, holding that there was no enabling legislation in Missouri authorizing CIUs to seek relief for wrongful convictions. Gardner is not alone in her inability to rectify wrongful convictions. …

Social cognition skills and socioemotional development are compromised in children growing up in low SES contexts, however, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unknown. Exposure to psychosocial risk factors early in life alters the child’s social milieu and in turn, could lead to atypical processing of social stimuli. In this study, we used functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure cortical responses to a social discrimination task in children raised in a low-resource setting at 6, 24, and 36 months. In addition, we assessed the relation between cortical responses to social and non-social information with psychosocial risk factors assessed using …

Methods: From December 2019 – January 2020, caregivers of adolescents (ages 9–17 years) living in thir- teen southern US states were recruited from a nationally-representative online survey panel. Caregivers (N = 1,105) completed a cross-sectional survey that assessed general adolescent vaccine attitudes as well as those associated with the HPV vaccine and HPV vaccination decision-making. The primary study …

Gender Disparities In Increased Parenting Time During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Research Note, Jennifer Augustine, Kate Prickett Aug 2022

Gender Disparities In Increased Parenting Time During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Research Note, Jennifer Augustine, Kate Prickett

Faculty Publications

Public health measures aimed at curbing the transmission of COVID-19 increased parenting responsibilities during the early stages of the pandemic. This research note examines time-use data from the American Time Use Surveys to provide several fresh insights as to how mothers took on a disproportionate share of this responsibility compared to fathers during this period. First, the gender gap in total parenting time narrowed by 18%. Meanwhile, the gender disparity in time in educational activities increased by 113% and was not explained by changes in mothers’ labor force participation. Mothers also took on 20% more time in secondary caregiving compared …

Profile Of Commercialized Aphicides On The Survivorship And Feeding Behavior Of The Cotton Aphid, Aphis Gossypii, Flinn M. O'Hara, Jeffrey A. Davis, Daniel R. Swale

Faculty Publications

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the most destructive agricultural pests due to photosynthate removal and horizontal transmission of plant viruses. Horizontal transmission of plant viruses by aphids occurs during distinct feeding behavioral events, such as probing for non-persistent viruses or phloem feeding for persistent viruses. We employed toxicity bioassays and electrical penetration graph (EPG) methodology to compare toxicity and quantify changes to feeding behavior and toxicity of A. gossypii after exposure to commercialized aphicides. Commercialized aphicides containing flupyradifurone, sulfoxaflor, thiamethoxam, thiamethoxam + lambda cyhalothrin, and bifenthrin induced >90% aphid mortality within 4 h of …

Canopy Arthropod Responses To Repeated Canopy Opening In A Wet Tropical Forest, Manoj Pandey, Timothy D. Schowalter

Faculty Publications

With predictions of increased frequency of intense hurricanes, it is increasingly crucial to understand how biotic and abiotic components of forests will be affected. This study describes canopy arthropod responses to repeated experimental and natural canopy opening at the Luquillo Experimental Forest Long-term Ecological Research Site (LTER) in Puerto Rico. The canopy trimming experiment (CTE1) treatments were started in 2004, and a second trimming (CTE2) was conducted in 2014, to study effects of increased hurricane frequency at the site. Paired disturbed plots with canopy trimmed (trim) and undisturbed plots with no trimming (no trim) were replicated in three experimental blocks. …

Architecture And Agency For Equity In Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, Lisa M. Campbell, Robin Fail, Rebecca Horan, Leslie Acton, Jeffrey E. Blackwatters

Faculty Publications

The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade) bring increased attention to various aspects of ocean governance, including equity. One of the Ocean Decade's identified challenges is to develop a sustainable and equitable ocean economy, but questions arise about how to conceptualize the multiple dimensions of equity in an ocean context. These questions become more complex as activities move away from coastal ecosystems and communities into off-shore Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), where ocean resources are recognized simultaneously as unowned/open access and as common heritage. In this paper, …

Relational Turbulence And Social Network Engagement During The Summer Of Covid-19: A Repeated Measures, Dyadic Analysis, Kellie S. Brisini, Denise H. Solomon Aug 2022

Relational Turbulence And Social Network Engagement During The Summer Of Covid-19: A Repeated Measures, Dyadic Analysis, Kellie S. Brisini, Denise H. Solomon

Faculty Publications

Background/Purpose: Relational turbulence theory suggests that changes in and around relationships create the potential for relational turbulence when everyday routines and scripts are upended and communication becomes polarized. In turn, perceptions of a romantic relationship as chaotic or tumultuous can influence a person’s engagement with their social network. Alternately, previous research also suggests that engagement with friends and family has the potential to influence married partner’s relationship quality. Research Design: This study examined these propositions among a sample of married couples (N = 64, 128 individuals) whose daily experiences and relationship dynamics changed during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Results/Conclusions: Based …

Developing A Conceptual Passive Contact Tracing System For Commercial Buildings Using Wifi Indoor Positioning, Sorena Vosoughkhosravi, Amirhosein Jafari

Faculty Publications

Contact tracing is one of the critical tools for fighting against pandemic disease outbreaks, such as the fast-growing SARS-CoV-2 virus and its different variants. At present, automated contact tracing systems face two main challenges: (1) requiring application installation on smart devices and (2) protecting the users’ privacy. This study introduces a conceptual passive contact tracing system using indoor WiFi positioning to address these challenges and investigate the role of such a system in commercial buildings. In this regard, this study uses a simulated small-office layout in a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed system. The special use …

The Need For A Framework Addressing The Temporal Aspects Of Fish Sperm Motility Leading To Community-Level Standardization, Harvey Blackburn, Leticia Torres, Yue Liu, Terrence R. Tiersch Aug 2022

The Need For A Framework Addressing The Temporal Aspects Of Fish Sperm Motility Leading To Community-Level Standardization, Harvey Blackburn, Leticia Torres, Yue Liu, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Motility is a widely available parameter that can be used to assess sperm quality of aquatic species. Sperm from fishes with external fertilization usually undergo a dynamic and short-lived period of motility after activation. The common practice of assigning a single value at an arbitrary peak of motility presents challenges for reproducibility, community-level standardization, and comparisons across studies. This study aimed to explore statistical approaches to standardize motility reporting, and to develop an initial framework for community-level standards. Sperm samples from 14 zebrafish (Danio rerio) with a total of 21,705 cells were analyzed by use of computer-assisted sperm analysis with …

Density Of States And Delocalization For Discrete Magnetic Random Schrödinger Operators, Simon Becker, Rui Han Aug 2022

Density Of States And Delocalization For Discrete Magnetic Random Schrödinger Operators, Simon Becker, Rui Han

Faculty Publications

We study discrete magnetic random Schrödinger operators on the square and honeycomb lattice. For the non-random magnetic operator on the hexagonal lattice with any rational magnetic flux, we show that the middle two dispersion surfaces exhibit Dirac cones. We then derive an asymptotic expansion for the density of states on the honeycomb lattice for oscillations of arbitrary rational magnetic flux. This allows us, as a corollary, to rigorously study the quantum Hall effect and conclude dynamical delocalization close to the conical point under disorder. We obtain similar results for the discrete random Schrödinger operator on the Z2-lattice with …

Valley-Floor Snowfall In Taylor Valley, Antarctica, From 1995 To 2017: Spring, Summer And Autumn, Madeline E. Myers, Peter T. Doran, Krista F. Myers

Faculty Publications

We present an analysis of the 20 year snowfall dataset in Taylor Valley and the results of a new snow cover monitoring study. Snowfall has been measured at four sites in Taylor Valley from 1995 to 2017. We focus on valley-floor snowfall when wind does not exceed 5 m s-1, and we exclude winter from our analysis due to poor data quality. Snowfall averaged 11 mm water equivalent (w.e.) from 1995 to 2017 across all stations and ranged from 1 to 58 mm w.e. Standard deviations ranged from 3 to 17 mm w.e., highlighting the strong interannual variability of snowfall …

Background: Approximately half of all atomic nuclei heavier than iron are synthesized by the slow neutron-capture process. The weak component of this process is not well understood and the reaction rates of each isotope in the s-process path affect nucleosynthesis abundances downstream. Purpose: To measure the neutron-capture cross sections of two weak s-process nuclei, Ge70,72, using the neutron time-of-flight technique. Measuring the capture cross sections for isotopes in this region of the chart of nuclides has proven challenging due to dominant scattering cross sections. Method: Samples consisted of pellets made of pressed enriched metallic powders. The Ge70,72 neutron-capture cross sections …

AMEGO-X, the All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory eXplorer, is a proposed instrument designed to bridge the so-called “MeV gap” by surveying the sky with unprecedented sensitivity from ∼100 keV to about 1 GeV. This energy band is of key importance for multimessenger and multiwavelength studies but it is nevertheless currently underexplored. AMEGO-X addresses this situation by proposing a design capable of detecting and imaging gamma rays via both Compton interactions and pair production processes. However, some of the objects that AMEGO-X will study, such as gamma-ray bursts and magnetars, extend to energies below ∼100 keV where the dominant interaction becomes …

Weak Thermal State Quadrature-Noise Shadow Imaging, Pratik J. Barge, Ziqi Niu, Savannah L. Cuozzo, Eugeniy E. Mikhailov, Irina Novikova, Hwang Lee, Lior Cohen

Faculty Publications

In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the possibility to create an image of an opaque object using a few-photon thermal optical field. We utilize the quadrature-noise shadow imaging (QSI) technique that detects the changes in the quadrature-noise statistics of the probe beam after its interaction with an object. We show that such a thermal QSI scheme has an advantage over the classical differential imaging when the effect of dark counts is considered. At the same time, the easy availability of thermal sources for any wavelength makes the method practical for broad range of applications, not accessible with, e.g., …

We report the discovery and analysis of a planet in the microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-0799. The planetary signal was observed by several ground-based telescopes, and the planet-host mass ratio is q = (2.65 ± 0.16) × 10-3. The ground-based observations yield a constraint on the angular Einstein radius θE, and the microlensing parallax vector πE, is strongly constrained by the Spitzer data. However, the 2019 Spitzer baseline data reveal systematics in the Spitzer photometry, so there is ambiguity in the magnitude of the parallax. In our preferred interpretation, a full Bayesian analysis using a Galactic model indicates that the planetary system …

We complete the analysis of all 2018 prime-field microlensing planets identified by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) Anomaly Finder. Among the ten previously unpublished events with clear planetary solutions, eight are either unambiguously planetary or are very likely to be planetary in nature: OGLE-2018-BLG-1126, KMT-2018-BLG-2004, OGLE-2018-BLG-1647, OGLE-2018-BLG-1367, OGLE-2018-BLG-1544, OGLE-2018-BLG-0932, OGLE-2018-BLG-1212, and KMT-2018-BLG-2718. Combined with the four previously published new Anomaly Finder events and 12 previously published (or in preparation) planets that were discovered by eye, this makes a total of 24 2018 prime-field planets discovered or recovered by Anomaly Finder. Together with a paper in preparation on 2018 subprime …
