X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Tin To 100 Kilobars, J. Dean Barnett, Vern E. Bean, H. Tracy Hall
X-Ray Diffraction Studies On Tin To 100 Kilobars, J. Dean Barnett, Vern E. Bean, H. Tracy Hall
Faculty Publications
The high-pressure equilibrium phase diagram of tin is investigated, and the crystal structure of Sn II at 98 kbar and 25degrees C is shown to be body-centered tetragonal with a=3.70 Angstroms, c=3.37 Angstroms, c/a=0.91, and with two atoms per unit cell. The linear compressibility of white tin is given at 25degrees C up to the high-pressure transformation at 92 kbar, and the latent heat of the transformation is measured as 225 cal/g-atom.
Legal Aid Program For North Dakota, William B. Fisch
Legal Aid Program For North Dakota, William B. Fisch
Faculty Publications
Since the summer of 1965, the State Bar Association of North Dakota, through a special subcommittee on Legal Aid and Defense of Indigents and its standing committee on the same subject,1 has been investigating the need for legal aid in North Dakota, possible sources for funds to finance legal aid programs in the state, and possible forms which a program might take to meet the need. As a result of these investigations, a proposal has been prepared by the committee for submission to the Legal Services Program of the Office of Economic Opportunity (headed by Mr. Bamberger), for federal funds …

Civil Code: Notes For An Uncelebrated Centennial, William B. Fisch
Faculty Publications
This is the first installment of a projected study of the Dakota Civil Code. While this portion deals with the historical background of the Code and its content as drafted for New York by David Dudley Field, a subsequent article will deal with its fate in the hands of the bar, the legislature and the courts in New York, California, and especially the Dakotas.

Mr. Justice Black, Constitutional Review, And The Talisman Of State Action, William W. Van Alstyne
Faculty Publications
In an endorsement of Justice Black’s dissent in Bell v. Maryland, this work argues in favors of Black’s interpretation of the state action requirement and attempts to make sense of Black’s understanding in other cases where he found state action in similar private circumstances.

In Gideon’S Wake: Harsher Penalties And The “Successful” Criminal Appellant, William W. Van Alstyne
Faculty Publications
Following the Court’s decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, popular opinion allowed indignant criminals seeking a re-trial to receive harsher sentences. This examination argues that such a result is unconstitutional.
Punishment By SD Associated With Fixed‐Ratio Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson
Punishment By SD Associated With Fixed‐Ratio Reinforcement, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
Two pigeons were trained with positive reinforcement on a multiple FR VI 2 schedule. The VI 2 component was held constant while the FR component was changed from ratios of 1 to 300. After responding had stabilized at each FR value, VI responses produced briefly either the fixed‐ratio SD or a stimulus uncorrected with either schedule component. Compared to the effects of the uncorrected stimulus change, the fixed‐ratio SD produced a decrease in VI responding proportional to the size of the FR requirement. It is concluded that stimuli associated with high FR schedules served as punishment for the ongoing behavior. …

Equation Of State Of Nacl And Its Use As A Pressure Gauge In High-Pressure Research, Daniel L. Decker
Equation Of State Of Nacl And Its Use As A Pressure Gauge In High-Pressure Research, Daniel L. Decker
Faculty Publications
The pressure as a function of lattice parameter and temperature has been calculated for NaCl over a pressure range of 0 to 500 kbar for temperatures between 0degrees and 1500degrees C. The calculation used the Mie-Gruneisen equation of state with Born-Mayer type repulsion terms between first and second nearest neighbors. The Gruneisen constant was expanded about its value at room temperature and atmospheric pressure; the first coefficient in the expansion being evaluated by forcing the calculated thermal expansion at atmospheric pressure to fit the experimental results of Enck. The two empirical parameters in the repulsion terms were evaluated using the …

The Fourteenth Amendment, The “Right” To Vote, And The Understanding Of The Thirty-Ninth Congress, William W. Van Alstyne
Faculty Publications
An examination of the Fourteenth Amendment’s legislative history is juxtaposed with Justice Harlan’s steadfast conclusion that such history reveals states’ right to set voting requirements.
