Using a set of commercially prepared sodium ferrocyanide absorbers enriched to 91.2% Fe57 the Lamb-Mössbauer factor was measured to be 0.28±0.03. The thickness of Fe57 for these absorbers was measured using x-ray absorption techniques and was found to be considerably smaller than that advertised by the manufacturer even after correcting for the size of the ferrocyanide particles in the absorbers.

A Variable Coeficient Of Restitution Experiment On A Linear Air Track, R. Gruebel, James C. Dennis, L. Choate

A system consisting of two pendula attached to an air cart is mathematically analyzed, and the coefficient of restitution is shown to pass through a deep minimum. The solution to the small angle equation of motion is transcendental and provides an exercise in graphical methods for the beginning mechanics student.

Pigeons obtained food reinforcement via a four-response chain that require pecking different keys in the presence of different colors. The sequence of correct key positions changed from session to session. Errors gradually decreased across sessions until a constant minimum range of variability in error levels was reached (steady state). Other characteristics of the transition and steady state of repeated acquisition (e.g., within-session rate of error reduction) were described. © 1971, Psychonomic Journals, Inc.. The common law has traditionally provided the rules that govern relationships among landowners in their use of watercourses. These rules are embodied in the eastern United States in the doctrine of riparian rights, which addresses itself both to water quantity, and to water quality. Persons complaining of pollution of waters abutting their lands have, in addition to redress by complaint to the state pollution control agency, redress by lawsuit against the alleged polluter. This common law supplements the body of statutory law regulating the waters of the state for the benefit of the people.

Ultimobranchial neoplasms from 5 bulls (hat were extracted and assayed individually contained approximately 68% as much calcitonin activity (452 ± 68 MRC mU/g) as thyroid glands from control bulls (663 ± 165 MRC mU/g). These results were consistent with the ultrastructural finding that thyroid neoplasms in old bulls were composed of primitive ultimobranchial cells which contained few mature secretory granules characteristic of parafollicular (C-) cells. Significant difference in calcitonin concentration was not detected between thyroid glands of control cows (617 ± 106 MRC mU/g) and bulls without ultimobranchial neoplasms. © 1971, American College of Veterinary Pathologists. The spatial distribution of terminal moraines in alpine valleys can be quantitatively described using distance/regression models. Surface parameters indicative of age may also be numerically analyzed. Evaluation of postglacial modification of valley sides between terminal moraines provides an additional indicator of relative age of valley segments. Analysis of the geomorphology of alpine features in the upper Rock Creek drainage in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana, shows that glaciers in this area deposited evidence of two Bull Lake, four Pinedale, and two Neo glacial advances.

The solid–liquid phase diagrams were investigated to 60 kbar for elemental sodium, potassium, and various sodium–potassium alloys. The data for Na and K are in general agreement with those of earlier workers. In the alloy system the temperatures of both the peritectic and eutectic halts increase as the pressure increases, but with different slopes, so that the two invariant points merge at approximately 35 kbar. Above this pressure, two halts are again observed. One increases with increasing pressure, and the other decreases with increasing pressure up to 55 kbar, where it abruptly starts increasing again. Two-, Three-, And Four-Particle Spatial Correlations Among Tertiary Cosmic Ray Muons, David D. Busath, R O. Stevenson

Showers of muons which result from interactions of primary cosmic rays high in the atmosphere appear deep underground as bundles of nearly parallel muons. For threshold energies of 1 TeV and arrival zenith angles of 45 degrees, those events having a small mean number of muons are described by a power law distribution in shower size having an exponent of ≅ -3.7 and a radial density distribution that decreases with distance R from the shower axis a little less rapidly than exp(-R/5.4 m).
