Root Diseases And Blister Rust Associated With Bark Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) In Western White Pine In Idaho, David Kulhavy, A.D. Partridge, R.W. Stark

Root systems of western white pine, Pinus montieola Douglas, were excavated with explosives and examined for pathogens. Data were also recorded on portions of the crown killed by blister rust caused by Cronartium ribieola Fisch. Statistical tests revealed a significant association between the bark beetles Dendroetonus ponderosae Hopkins and Pityogenes fossifrons (LeConte), and the root pathogen Armillariella mellea. (Vah!. ex Fr.) Karst and between beetles and all root diseases. Ninety-two percent of the trees attacked by bark beetles had root diseases, and 97% had either root diseases or blister rust. Estimating Infestation Rates Of The Nantucket Pine Tip Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Through Sequential Sampling, David Kulhavy, Paul C. Johnson, Bernard Andersen

Sequential sampling to estimate proportion from a binomially distributed population was used to estimate apparent and actual infestation rates of the Nantucket pine tip moth, Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock), on loblolly, Pinus taeda, and shortleaf pine, P. echinata. Populations of R. frustrana, as measured by infested tips, increased from the overwintering generation through the second generation (July), then decreased rapidly for P. echinata. Populations of R. frustrana continued to increase through the season in P. taeda. Tip moth infestations were concentrated in the top one-half of the tree.

Effect Of A Prescribed Fire On Herbage Production In Southwestern Ponderosa Pine On Sedimentary Soils, Brian P. Oswald, W. Wallace Covington

An area burned by prescription in 1977 and a nearby unburned area were measured in 1974 and 1980 to determine effects of the burn on herbage and forage production. Herbage production on the burned area increased significantly in 1980 over its 1974 level, in addition to being greater than the 1980 control production. However, the proportion of forage production to total herbage production in 1980 on the burned area decreased after the burn, and was significantly less than the control area forage production. This reduction in forage production can be attributed to the increase of nonforage species, notably bracken fern. …

Thinning Optimization In Mixed-Species Forests, Steven H. Bullard, W. David Klemperer

An approach is summarized for estimating optimal thinning and final harvest age for existing, mixed-species stands. The method involves stand-table projection with upgrowth and mortality equations, formulated as an integer-nonlinear programming problem. Random search methods are proposed for estimating optimal cutting prescriptions. Such solution methods warrant further study in forestry, since their use enables broad application of stand-specific modeling results.

Antitrust And Employer Restraints In Labor Markets, Robert H. Jerry Ii

This Article argues that the Sherman Act regulates concerted employer activity in the labor market only if such activity restrains or attempts to restrain the product market. After discussing the legislative history of the Act, the Article examines and synthesizes two conflicting lines of cases. Finally, the Article suggests how courts should dispose of challenges to employer conduct and posits the basis for a unified theory of labor-antitrust law.

The thesis of this Article is that the myth-of-neutrality argument is partially right and partially wrong. For reasons of religious liberty, the state can and should avoid any involvement with matters of religious worship, and the propagation or inculcation of matters that comprise the very heart of one's belief concerning the nature and destiny of mankind. Conversely, the state cannot retreat from the regulation of certain conduct which is arguably immoral and still claim its neutrality concerning the rightness of the conduct. The present study is an attempt to determine volunteering bias in racial, gender, and age groups in an adult development study. Samples were drawn from three different types of organizations in the Columbia, South Carolina SMSA. Volunteering rates were calculated as a function of the number eligible to participate in three age groups: 1) young adult (aged 20-25); 2) middle adult (aged 40-45); and 3) old (aged 60-80). The middle group volunteered at a higher rate than the other two age groups, but this effect was restricted to the white sample. Women volunteered more readily than men, but not among …

Peritoneal macrophages from Mongolian jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) with either lymphatic or intraperitoneal infections of Brugia pahangi wre studied to determine the effects of infection on macrophage function and morphology. Macrophages were collected at 40, 90, 140, and 200 days after inoculation of infective third-stage larvae and assayed for phagocytic and bactericidal activity by the acridine orange method and for morphological changes by light and electron microscopy. Significant increases in phagocytic and microbicidal activity (P ≤ 0.01) were observed in peritoneal macrophages collected from jirds with intraperitoneal infections when compared with peritoneal macrophages from jirds with lymphatic infections and resident peritoneal …

New Settlement Statute: Its History And Effect, David A. Fischer

The statute concerning releases in multiple tortfeasor cases was amended to encourage settlements in two ways. It protects the settling tortfeasor from future liability for contribution, and it protects the settling claimant from having future judgments against non-settling tortfeasors reduced by more than an amount ascertainable at the time of the settlement. This article discusses the operation of the new statute and its relation to the law of contribution, indemnity, and comparative fault in Missouri.

The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Retinol-Binding Protein., M. E. Newcomer, T. A. Jones, J. Aqvist, J. Sundelin, U. Eriksson, L. Rask, P. A. Peterson

The complex of retinol with its carrier protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP) has been crystallized and its three-dimensional structure determined using X-ray crystallography. Its most striking feature is an eight-stranded up-and-down beta barrel core that completely encapsulates the retinol molecule. The retinol molecule lies along the axis of the barrel with the beta-ionone ring innermost and the tip of the isoprene tail close to the surface.

External Labelling Of Glycoproteins From First-Trimester Human Placental Microvilli, S. J. Fisher, M. S. Leitch, R. A. Laine

The brush-border glycoproteins of first-trimester human placentas were investigated by using two external labelling techniques: (1) sequential digestion with neuraminidase and galactose oxidase, followed by reduction with NaB3H4, which 3H-labels terminal galactose and galactosaminase residues; and (2) sequential treatment with periodate and NaB3H4, which 3H-terminal sialic acid residues. The labelling procedures were performed on intact tissue so that the results would more closely approximate the topography of the bursh border in vivo. The microvilli were isolated, subjected to sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, and the [3H]glycoproteins detected by fluorography. Densitometer scans of the fluorograms of the [3H]galactoproteins showed that, under reducing …

A randomized, crossover trial was carried out on the effect of moderate sodium reduction on red-blood-cell sodium metabolism. The participants were healthy high school students (mean age = 16 years, n = 33). Changes in sodium-lithium countertransport and intracellular sodium concentration were evaluated 24 days after a decrease in dietary sodium from approximately 110 to 40 mEq per day. Dietary sodium restriction had no significant effect on either sodium-lithium countertransport or intracellular sodium concentration. © 1984 American Heart Association, Inc.

Relationships between thaw rate, thaw bath time, and initial bath and final seminal temperature with coefficients of determination .99 and .97 were: bath time = −.01 + 220.25(1/thaw rate); initial bath temperature = final seminal temperature − 7.29 + 390.05(1/bath time). Ejaculates from 10 bulls were split and processed in egg yolk-citrate-glycerol, egg yolk-Tris-glycerol, and whole milk-glycerol. All semen was packaged and frozen in .5-ml French straws at −196°C. Sixteen thaw treatments consisted of factorial combinations of four final seminal temperatures and four thaw rates. Treatments were assessed by post-thaw acrosomal integrity after 3-h 37°C incubation. Seminal quality improved with …

A Hausdorff space X is said to be compactly generated (a /e-space) if and only if the open subsets V of X are precisely those subsets for which K n V is open in K for all compact subsets of K of X. We interpret this property as a duality property of the lattice 0{ X) of open sets of X, This view point allows the introduction of the concept of being quasicompactly generated for an arbitrary sober space X. According to Harnack’s theorem the number of topological components of the real part of a nonsingular projective curve X defined over R is at most g(X) + 1, where g(X) is the genus of X. Let M be an orientable 3-manifold and T a torus component of ∂M. We show that the boundary-slopes of incompressible, boundary-incompressible planar surfaces (P,∂P)⊂(M,T) are pairwise within distance 4; in particular, there are at most six such boundary-slopes. A corollary is that, for any knot K in S3, at most six Dehn surgeries on K can yield a reducible 3-manifold. © 1984.

By a well-known result of Tutte, if e is an element of a connected matroid M, then either the deletion or the contraction of e from M is connected. If, for every element of M, exactly one of these minors is connected, then we call M minor-minimally-connected. This paper characterizes such matroids and shows that they must contain a number of two-element circuits or cocircuits. In addition, a new bound is proved on the number of 2-cocircuits in a minimally connected matroid. © 1984.

Let M be a matroid representable over GF(q) and S be a subset of its ground set. In this note we prove that S is maximal with the property that the critical exponent c(M|S; q) does not exceed k if and only if S is maximal with the property that c(M · S) ≤ k. Time Dependence Of A General Class Of Quantum Distribution Functions, R. F. O'Connell, Lipo Wang, H. A. Williams

We derive an explicit analytic expression for the time development of a generalized class of quantum distribution functions, which include as special cases the Wigner, the normal, and the antinormal distributions. We find that the simplest result is obtained in the case of the Wigner distribution. © 1984 The American Physical Society.
