The theory of radiative processes in quantum theory is formulated on the basis of self-energy, in analogy to classical radiation theory, and is explicitly carried out for the calculation of the Lamb shift and spontaneous emission.

Plato's decision to use heuristic drama (in the tradition of Aeschylus and Sophocles) as a vehicle for his philosophical teachings forces the serious reader to make a careful examination of the literary elements of the dialogues. Plato's basic reason for using this literary form is to provide guidance for the interpretation of the content. As Kitto has observed, "In a great work of art, whether a play, a picture, or a piece of music, the connexion between the form and the content is so vital that the two may be said to be ultimately identical." Judge Ginsburg has provided a judge's-eye view of the work of a United States Court of Appeals in her Dunwody Lecture.'From her perspective as a judge on the District of Columbia Circuit, she has done a fine job describing the process of deciding appellate cases and composing a reasoned decision. But simply describing" things as they are" in the decisional process will not suffice in this article for two reasons. First, Judge Ginsburg has already done that, as have other judges.

Defendant A was convicted twice previously of felonies and sentenced to prison for fraudulent use of a credit card ($80.00) and for passing a forged check ($28.36). Upon his third felony conviction for obtaining money by false pretenses ($120.75), he received a mandatory life sentence under a state recidivist statute.

Salt marshes are widely believed to serve as nurseries for many fishes and crustaceans of fishery value as a result of the high production of vascular plant detritus and the protection from predation offered by shallow, spatially complex habitats. Comparisons of the yields of species which reside in salt marsh habitats during critical life history stages (such as penaeid shrimp) with the area of such habitats and their greater densities in flooded marshes and associated tidal creeks support the premise that marshes enhance the yield of such species. Raman Microprobe Determination Of Local Crystal Orientation In Laser Annealed Silicon, J. B. Hopkins, L. A. Farrow, G. J. Fisanick

In this letter we discuss the application of polarization selective Raman microprobe spectroscopy to the detailed, nondestructive analysis of the local crystal orientation of a polycrystalline silicon sample grown over SiO 2 pads and laser annealed. Intensity measurements taken as a function of input polarization angle are fit to an expression derived from the Raman scattering selection rules to calculate the angles by which the crystal structure is twisted within the original substrate plane, as well as the degree of tipping of the crystal plane away from the plane of the Si substrate.

Texts designed to introduce political science students to the history of political thought or to past political theories have been commonplace in the discipline, as have disputes about their pedagogical utility or justifiability, and methodological debates concerning their adequacy or legitimacy. In an effort to address these disputes and some of these debates, I construct three models of historiographical inquiry. Each model represents a particular approach, and each is defined in terms of three common features. Absence Of Minimum Metallic Conductivity In Gd(3-X)Vxs4 At Very Low Temperature And Evidence For A Coulomb Gap, S. Washburn, Richard A. Webb, S. Von Molnar, F. Holtzberg

Gd(3-x)vxS4 provides a convenient analog of a compensated semiconductor in which, for x≃0.3, the mobility edge can be tuned smoothly through the Fermi energy by the application of a magnetic field. The results of a search for a minimum metallic conductivity demonstrate that, down to T=6 mK, the metal-insulator transition is smooth. In the insulating regime, the temperature dependence of the conductivity was more consistent with the theory of mutual interactions than with the theory of pure localization.

The magnetoresistance of sub-0.4-μm-diam Au and Au60Pd40 rings was measured in a perpendicular magnetic field at temperatures as low as 5 mK in search of simple, periodic resistance oscillations that would be evidence of flux quantization in normal-metal rings. However, instead of simple oscillations, a very complex structure developed in the magnetoresistance at low temperatures. Fourier analysis of all the data did not reveal convincing evidence for flux quantization in the rings. Complex structure similar to that observed in the rings was also found in the magnetoresistance of short, narrow, Au and Au60Pd …

With the approach of the Bill of Rights bicentennial, this paper takes the cause for celebration as an equally important occasion for critique. This work argues that the most distinguishing aspects of our Constitution are not the Bill of Rights, federalism, and separation of powers, but rather the availability of judicial review, the political insulation of federal judges, and the limited mechanisms available for constitutional change.

13C NMR spectroscopy has been used to characterize Amadori (ketoamine) adducts formed by reaction of [2-13C]glucose with free amino groups of protein. The spectra of glycated proteins were acquired in phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 and were interpreted by reference to the spectra of model compounds, N alpha-formyl-N epsilon-fructose-lysine and glycated poly-L-lysine (GlcPLL). The anomeric carbon region of the spectrum (approximately 90-105 ppm) of glycated cytochrome c was superimposable on that of N alpha-formyl-N epsilon-fructose-lysine, and contained three peaks characteristic of the alpha- and beta-furanose and beta-pyranose anomers of Amadori adducts to peripheral lysine residues on protein (pK alpha approximately …

General double linkage of Gorenstein algebras is defined. Rigidity, genericity, and regularity up to codimension six all pass across general double linkage. Rigid strongly unobstructed codimension four Gorenstein algebras which lie in different Herzog classes are produced.

A method has been proposed for factoring an integer N by using the structure of the class groups of quadratic fields of radicand – kN for various small multipliers k. We discuss the method and an implementation of the method, and various theoretical questions which have an impact on the practical use of the method in factoring. Some of the theoretical questions relate to the nature of class numbers and class groups; we present extensive statistical results on the class numbers and class groups of imaginary quadratic fields.

This survey of Eleventh Circuit administrative law decisions covers the law applicable to the administrative agencies, rather than the law applied by those agencies. The substantive law administered by the agencies is beyond the scope of this survey. The surveyed cases may be broken down into two major categories: decisions relating to administrative decisionmaking and decisions concerning judicial review of administrative actions.

In accordance with the instructions provided by GSFC, the work has been divided into a number of individual study tasks. For each task, a brief narrative description and a budget are provided. Task I, the Core Task, is treated as a single task. Task II, concerning the comet, is a single task. Task III is subdivided into three major categories: (A) on-going interplanetary studies begun in prior years (B) on-going magnetotail studies begun in FY'84 and (C) new studies proposed for FY'85 and '86.

This article, written early in the modern ADR era, provided a framework for developing the mediation field. It begins by elaborating William Simon’s critique of the “ideology of advocacy.” Simon argues that the adversary system is supposed to foster values of individuality, autonomy, responsibility, and dignity, but it often undermines those values in practice. This article catalogs a “parade of horribles” experienced by disputants, attorneys, judges, and the public. These include unequal access to justice, procedural rules that frustrate substantive justice, a narrow set of available remedies, a game psychology undermines respect for law and justice, parties’ alienating experience in …
