Operations research entered the library scene in the 1960s and '70s, and has attracted much interest from librarians. This paper examines the assumptions made by selected operations researchers concerning organizational decision-making in academic libraries. The assumptions then are compared to Richard L. Daft's contingency framework of organizational decision-making to determine the appropriateness of applying operations research assumptions and methods to organizational decision-making in an academic library setting. A review of the operations researchers' assumptions and Daft's framework suggests that the operations research approach may be appropriately applied to only a relatively narrow category of problems in academic libraries that match …

Progressive revelation has played an important role in the development of the Seventh-day Adventist church and its theology. By “progressive revelation” I mean God’s continuous unfolding of prior revealed truth.1 Without such progressive revelation, the unfolding of inspired truth building on truth previously revealed and never denying it, the Seventh-day Adventist Church would not exist.

Religious Devoutness In College Students: Relations With Emotional Support Adjustment And Psychological Separation From Parents, P. Scott Richards

The relation between religious orientation and mental health was investigated. Measures of religious orientation and devoutness, depression, shame and guilt, existential well-being, and psychological separation from parents were administered to 268 undergraduate students. Four groups were formed. Results indicated that religiously devout intrinsic and proreligious Ss did not differ from less devout extrinsic and nontraditionally religious students in depression, shame, and existential well-being. Intrinsic and proreligious Ss scored higher on guilt proneness and religious well-being and lower on functional, attitudinal, and emotional separation from parents than did nontraditionally religious Ss. Ellis's (1980) religiosity-em otional-disturbance hypothesis was not supported. Some insight …

This paper discusses soft x-ray filter designs for the Brigham Young University "Goldhelox Project". Three polymers intended for use as a supportive substrate for a soft x-ray solar filter, having a passband centered at 171 angstroms are examined. The use of polymer substrates is examined because of vibrational and mechanical stresses associated with the shuttle launch, preventing the use of a free standing filter, and because of Goldhelox's special need to locate the filter near the imaging plane. Zinc cadmium telluride (ZnxCd1-xTe) solid solution films with 0≤x≤0.12 were deposited by the close spaced vapor transport method and characterized using photoluminescence, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The two former techniques indicate that films with high crystalline quality can be prepared with moderate substrate temperatures and low argon pressures. Under these conditions deposition rates of up to 1000 Å/s are achieved and Zn concentration in the film is the same as that of the source. The electron micrographs show grain sizes comparable to the film thickness.

Changes in the activites of S-adcnosylmethionine (SAM) synthetase (methionine adenosyltransferase, EC 2.5.1.6.) and SAM decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.50) were studied in carrot (Daucus carota) cell cultures in response to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and several inhibitors of polyamine biosynthesis. Activity of SAM synthetase increased significantly during the first 5 days of culture under all conditions, maximum activity being observed in thc presence of 2,4-D. DL-α-Difluoromethylarginine (DFMA), I,L-α-difluoroinethylornithine (DFMO) and cyclohexylammonium sulfatc (CHAS) had little effect on the activity of this enzyme. The enzyme activity was lower than the controls in the presence of methylglyoxal bis(guany1hydrazone) (MGBG). The activity of SAM dccarboxylasc, which …

Toward the end of September 1990 at a closed meeting in Washington, DC, the Judicial Conference of the United States passed on a substantial set of proposed amendments to the rules of practice and procedure of the federal courts. The new appellate rules authorized local circuit rules on electronic filing, required a jurisdictional statement in the appellant's brief and eliminated some inconsistencies in the notice rules for admiralty appeals.

In theory, the commodity futures markets are the essence of competition. All orders are required to be exposed to trading pits where traders vie competitively and aggressively to assure the best possible execution price. On the surface, as observed from the exchange galleries or on television, the exchanges do appear to be highly competitive, particularly when one views hundreds of traders screaming and gesticulating wildly for orders. The now famous sting operations on the Chicago exchanges in 1989, however, have provided dramatic evidence that a dangerous symbiotic relationship has developed among traders on the floor that is undermining competition and …

A description is given of the baseline NSCAT (the NASA scatterometer) ambiguity removal algorithm and the method used to select the set of optimum parameter values. An extensive simulation of the NSCAT instrument and ground data processor provides a means of testing the resulting tuned algorithm. This simulation generates the ambiguous wind-field vectors expected from the instrument as it orbits over a set of realistic mesoscale wind fields. The ambiguous wind field is then de-aliased using the median-filter-based ambiguity removal algorithm. Performance is measured by comparison of the selected wind fields with the true wind fields. Power Law Exponents For A Spreading Front And Growing Interface In An Irreversible Wetting, Evan Willett, Ras B. Pandey

Using computer simulations, the power-law behavior of the interface growth of a spreading fluid is studied in a two-dimensional lattice model. The interface width exponent ν and the dynamical exponent k for the evolution of the front are consistent with their dynamical scaling relation. The magnitude of these exponents seems to depend upon the nature of the substrate and the concentration of the carriers of the wetting fluid.

Formation Of Methylmercaptan And Dimethylsulfide From Methoxylated Aromatic Compounds In Anoxic Marine And Fresh Water Sediments, Kai Finster, Gary M. King, Friedhelm Bak

Anaerobic formation of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and methylmercaptan (MSH) in anoxic sulfide-containing slurries from marine and fresh water sediments was stimulated by addition of syringate (4-hydroxy,3,5,-dimethoxybenzoate) and 3,4,5,-trimethoxybenzoate. The release of DMS and MSH occurred during the consumption of the aromatic monomers and ceased after their depletion. DMS was the dominant methylated sulfur compound in fresh water sediments, in contrast to marine sediments where MSH was predominant. No production of volatile organic sulfur compounds was observed in slurries containing gallate (3,4,5,-trihydroxybenzoate) or in autoclaved controled. About 50-65% of the methoxy carbon could be accounted for by peak accumulation of DMS and …

The HS subfamily of Alu sequences is comprised of a group of nearly identical members. Individual subfamily members share 97.7% nucleotide identity with each other and 98.9% nucleotide identity with the HS consensus sequence. Individual subfamily members are on the average 2.8 million years old, and were probably derived from a single source 'master' gene sometime after the human/great ape divergence. The recent Alu family member insertions provide a better image of the structure of Alu retroposons before they have had the opportunity to change significantly. A weak localisation theory for a semiconductor quantum wire, which has a width of the order of the Fermi wavelength is presented. In the model the electronic motion is essentially one-dimensional and the localisation length L1 is much larger than the mean free path l, so that, in contrast to conventional theories a non-localised quantum wire with a total length Lproperties, the authors study the temperature dependence and the subbands effect of the weak localisation. They find that when (the phase coherent length) Lphi>L, the conductance of the quantum wire depends on L instead of Lphi, implying a temperature …

The dielectric response of a quasi-one-dimensional electron system is studied by including fluctuation effects (in the polarizability) and by using a recently derived analytic form for the electron-electron interactions. General forms for the polarizability matrices both for the intra- and inter-subband cases are presented. The generalized polarizability is analytic over the whole region of the wavevectors and rigorously retains the number neutrality. Various differences between the intra- and inter-subband cases for the polarizability and the dielectric matrix function are studied. The theory is used to study impurity screening and plasmon excitations in the presence of multi-subbands. The authors show that …

Purification And Characterization Of A Dna Polymerase From The Cyanobacterium Anacystis Nidulans R2, Hsiu-Jin Lin, Gordon C. Cannon, Sabine Heinhorst

A DNA polymerase has been highly purified from Anacystis nidulans R2. Electrophoretic analysis in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels revealed that the final fraction contains three bands of M_r 107,000, 93,000, and 51,000, respectively. Analysis of purified DNA polymerase activity in situ indicates that of the three polypeptides the M_r 107,000 species has the catalytic activities. The native molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated by glycerol gradient sedimentation to be 100,000. The enzyme has an absolute requirement for a divalent cation. Mg²⁺ can be replaced with Mn²⁺, but the DNA polymerase is less active. Potassium …

The relations of systolic and diastolic blood pressures to alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in 15,612 men and 3,855 women were investigated. Alcohol intake was assessed by questionnaire and stratified into seven levels for men and six for women according to the ounces of ethanol consumed per week. Exercise tolerance was determined by maximal treadmill exercise testing and was categorized into six age-specific by sex-specific levels. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly related to both alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in both men and women.
