In this note we determine when a collection of subsets of a set E is the set of non-spanning circuits of a matroid on E. This result is then used to characterize when a matroid on E is uniquely determined by its set of non-spanning circuits. © 1991, Academic Press Limited. All rights reserved.

Distributional Solutions Of The Wiener-Hopf Integral And Integro-Differential Equations, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal

We present the theory and technique for obtaining the distributional solutions for the Wiener-Hopf integral and integro-differential equations. This is achieved by identifying a class of kernels for which these equations are well defined and are of the Fredholm type. Consequently, the associated operators and their images are of finite dimensions. Furthermore, we define the operators in such a way that the corresponding equations hold at the end points; otherwise, the equations are usually ill-behaved. We illustrate our analysis with the help of various examples. © 1991, Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium. All Rights Reserved.

The effects of elevated levels of ozone on growth and frost resistance were studied using broadleaf‐evergreen citrus and avocado trees. ‘Ruby Red’ grapefruit (Citrus parodist L.) trees on either Volkamer lemon (Citrus volkanieriana Ten. & Pasq.) or sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) rootstocks and ‘Simmonds’ or ‘Pancho’ avocado trees (Persea americana Mill.) on the rootstock ‘Waldin’ were exposed to ozone in open‐top chambers for 4 months in 1988 and for 8 months in a second experiment in 1989. Computer-Simulated Evaluation Of Possible Mechanisms For Quenching Heavy Metal Ion Activity In Plant Vacuoles: I. Cadmium, Jian Wang, Bill P. Evangelou, Mark T. Nielsen, George J. Wagner

Various mechanisms have been suggested for the quenching of Cd ion activity in plant vacuoles. These include solution complexation with organic acids and sulfhydryl-containing peptides and precipitation as sulfides. Because direct experimental support for these mechanisms is lacking and difficult to obtain, we have used a computer model to evaluate the quenching role of possible organic and inorganic ligands of tobacco cultured cells exposed to Cd. Results of this thermodynamic evaluation, which assumes that a chemical equilibrium state is met in the vacuole, support the conclusion that sulfhydryl-containing peptides and certain organic acids may form soluble Cd complexes. Acrosomal integrity of bovine spermatozoa was evaluated using naphthol yellow S-erythrosine B stain with bright field microscopy, .2% glutaraldehyde fixation with Nomarski optics, and live wet smears with Nomarski optics to compare the evaluation techniques. Four ejaculates per two Holstein bulls were enriched through a Percoll gradient, capacitated with heparin, and acrosome-reacted with lysophosphatidylcholine to prepare spermatozoa for in vitro fertilization. Spermatozoa samples were taken after each preparatory step, and percentage of intact acrosomes was evaluated with the stain, .2% glutaraldehyde, and live wet smear. The electron affinities of atomic hydrogen and deuterium have been determined by tunable-laser threshold-photodetachment spectroscopy: the electron affinities of H (F=0) and D (F=1/2) are 6082.990.15 and 6086.20.6 cm-1, respectively. The value for H is a 20-fold improvement over previous experimental determinations. © 1991 The American Physical Society.

A Monte Carlo study of a physically based distributed-parameter hydrologic model is described. The catchment model simulates overland flow and streamflow, and it is based on the kinematic wave concept. Soil Conservation Service curves are used to model rainfall excess within the basin. The model was applied to the Ralston Creek watershed, a small (7.5 km2) rural catchment in eastern Iowa. Sensitivity of the model response with respect to rainfall-input spatial and temporal sampling density was investigated. The input data were generated by a space-time stochastic model of rainfall.
