Environment Knowledge-Driven Generic Models To Detect Coughs From Audio Recordings, Sudip Vhaduri, Sayanton V. Dibbo, Yugyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

Goal: Millions of people are dying due to res- piratory diseases, such as COVID-19 and asthma, which are often characterized by some common symptoms, including coughing. Therefore, objective reporting of cough symp- toms utilizing environment-adaptive machine-learning models with microphone sensing can directly contribute to respiratory disease diagnosis and patient care. Methods: In this work, we present three generic modeling approaches – unguided, semi-guided, and guided approaches consid- ering three potential scenarios, i.e., when a user has no prior knowledge, some knowledge, and detailed knowledge about the environments, respectively. Results: From detailed analysis with three datasets, we find that guided models …

Numerical Modeling And Analysis Of Strengthened Steel–Concrete Composite Beams In Sagging And Hogging Moment Regions, Ayman El-Zohairy, Suzan Mustafa, Hesham Shaaban, Hani Salim

Faculty Publications

Strengthening of composite beams is highly needed to upgrade the capacities of existing beams. The strengthening methods can be classified as active or passive techniques. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to provide detailed FE simulations for strengthened and unstrengthened steel–concrete composite beams at the sagging and hogging moment regions with and without profiled steel sheeting. The developed models were verified against experimental results from the literature. The verified models were used to present comparisons between the effect of using external post-tensioning and CFRP laminates as strengthening techniques. Applying external post-tensioning at the sagging moment regions is more …

Caveat Emptor: Scan Quality Of Elsevier’S Digital Backfile Pdf Collection, Gregory M. Nelson, Paul Kj Robbins, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

Scans of journal articles originally published in print, otherwise known as digital journal backfiles, benefit library patrons by providing near instantaneous access to important older information and full-text searchability. Digital backfiles can serve as a reliable surrogate for their corresponding print journals which could be removed from the library, freeing up space for other patron services. Both benefits are realized when the scanned articles are of sufficient clarity to replace the print versions. Several studies have analyzed small and subject-narrow sections of Elsevier’s digital backfile. This article contains a scan-quality analysis from 1578 journals that contain nearly four million articles …

Synergistic Role Of Temperature And Salinity In Aggregation Of Nonionic Surfactant-Coated Silica Nanoparticles, Yingzhen Ma, Christian Heil, Gergely Nagy, William T. Heller, Yaxin An, Arthi Jayaraman, Bhuvnesh Bharti

Faculty Publications

The adsorption of nonionic surfactants onto hydrophilic nanoparticles (NPs) is anticipated to increase their stability in aqueous medium. While nonionic surfactants show salinity- and temperature-dependent bulk phase behavior in water, the effects of these two solvent parameters on surfactant adsorption and self-assembly onto NPs are poorly understood. In this study, we combine adsorption isotherms, dispersion transmittance, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to investigate the effects of salinity and temperature on the adsorption of pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) surfactant on silica NPs. We find an increase in the amount of surfactant adsorbed onto the NPs with increasing temperature and salinity. …

Discriminating Wirelesshart Communication Devices Using Sub-Nyquist Stimulated Responses, Jeffrey D. Long, Michael A. Temple, Christopher M. Rondeau

Faculty Publications

Reliable detection of counterfeit electronic, electrical, and electromechanical devices within critical information and communications technology systems ensures that operational integrity and resiliency are maintained. Counterfeit detection extends the device’s service life that spans manufacture and pre-installation to removal and disposition activity. This is addressed here using Distinct Native Attribute (DNA) fingerprinting while considering the effects of sub-Nyquist sampling on DNA-based discrimination. The sub-Nyquist sampled signals were obtained using factor-of-205 decimation on Nyquist-compliant WirelessHART response signals. The DNA is extracted from actively stimulated responses of eight commercial WirelessHART adapters and metrics introduced to characterize classifier performance. Adverse effects of sub-Nyquist decimation …

Augmenting Project Echo For Opioid Use Disorder With Data-Informed Quality Improvement, Owen B. Murray, Marcy A. Doyle, Bethany M. Mcleman, Lisa A. Marsch, Elizabeth C. Saunders, Katherine Cox, Delitha Watts, Jeanne Ryer

Faculty Publications

Background

National opioid-related overdose fatalities totaled 650,000 from 1999 to 2021. Some of the highest rates occurred in New Hampshire, where 40% of the population lives rurally. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD; methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone) have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing opioid overdose and mortality. Methadone access barriers disproportionally impact rural areas and naltrexone uptake has been limited. Buprenorphine availability has increased and relaxed regulations reduces barriers in general medical settings common in rural areas. Barriers to prescribing buprenorphine include lack of confidence, inadequate training, and lack of access to experts. To address these barriers, learning collaboratives have trained …

The Critique Is On The Glass: The Extension Of Museum-Presentation Techniques To Substantively Advance Law School Pedagogy, Rachel H. Smith

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

In The Writing’s on the Wall: Using Multimedia Presentation Techniques from the Museum World to Improve Law School Pedagogy, Professor Cecilia A. Silver demonstrates how traditional law school teaching would benefit from embracing museum techniques. The Writing’s on the Wall offers museum presentation principles as a corrective to old-fashioned law teaching. And they certainly are. But they can be much more.

The museum techniques that the article describes are a starting point for thinking about museums as a useful analog to law schools, especially in confronting the biases, hierarchies, and injustices of the past and present. The Writing’s …

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Alcohol-Attributed Deaths In The United States, 1999–2020, Ibraheem M. Karaye, Nasim Maleki, Ismaeel Yunusa Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

The disparities in alcohol-attributed death rates among different racial and ethnic groups in the United States (US) have received limited research attention. Our study aimed to examine the burden and trends in alcohol-attributed mortality rates in the US by race and ethnicity from 1999 to 2020. We used national mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database and employed the ICD-10 coding system to identify alcohol-related deaths. Disparity rate ratios were calculated using the Taylor series, and Joinpoint regression was used to analyze temporal trends and calculate annual and …

Loop Quantum Gravity Of A Spherically Symmetric Scalar Field Coupled To Gravity With A Clock, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Apr 2023

Loop Quantum Gravity Of A Spherically Symmetric Scalar Field Coupled To Gravity With A Clock, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

The inclusion of matter fields in spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity has proved problematic at the level of implementing the constraint algebra including the Hamiltonian constraint. Here we consider the system with the introduction of a clock. Using the abelianizaton technique we introduced in previous papers in the case of gravity coupled to matter, the system can be gauge fixed and rewritten in terms of a restricted set of dynamical variables that satisfy simple Poisson bracket relations. This creates a true Hamiltonian and therefore one bypasses the issue of the constraint algebra. We show how loop quantum gravity techniques may …

Kinetic And Chemical Effects Of Clays And Other Fillers In The Preparation Of Epoxy-Vinyl Ether Composites Using Radical-Induced Cationic Frontal Polymerization, Brecklyn R. Groce, Emma E. Lane, Daniel P. Gary, Douglas T. Ngo, Dylan T. Ngo, Fahima Shaon, Jorge A. Belgodere, John A. Pojman

Faculty Publications

Addition of fillers to formulations can generate composites with improved mechanical properties and lower the overall cost through a reduction of chemicals needed. In this study, fillers were added to resin systems consisting of epoxies and vinyl ethers that frontally polymerized through a radical-induced cationic frontal polymerization (RICFP) mechanism. Different clays, along with inert fumed silica, were added to increase the viscosity and reduce the convection, results of which did not follow many trends present in free-radical frontal polymerization. The clays were found to reduce the front velocity of RICFP systems overall compared to systems with only fumed silica. It …

The application of engineered biomaterials for wound healing has been pursued since the beginning of tissue engineering. Here, we attempt to apply functionalized lignin to confer antioxidation to the extracellular microenvironments of wounds and to deliver oxygen from the dissociation of calcium peroxide for enhanced vascularization and healing responses without eliciting inflammatory responses. Elemental analysis showed 17 times higher quantity of calcium in the oxygen-releasing nanoparticles. Lignin composites including the oxygen-generating nanoparticles released around 700 ppm oxygen per day at least for 7 days. By modulating the concentration of the methacrylated gelatin, we were able to maintain the injectability of …

Semi-Differentiation Of Reversible, Soluble-Insoluble Potential Sweep Voltammograms, Tyler Williams, Ranon Fuller, Cameron Vann, Devin Rappleye Apr 2023

Semi-Differentiation Of Reversible, Soluble-Insoluble Potential Sweep Voltammograms, Tyler Williams, Ranon Fuller, Cameron Vann, Devin Rappleye

Faculty Publications

Semi-differentiation, or convolution as it is sometimes known, is a mathematical technique commonly used to disentangle overlapping peaks in cyclic or linear sweep voltammograms. However, this technique is often misapplied due to misunderstandings of fractional calculus. Additionally, rigorous treatment and validation of the theory of semi-differential analysis of reversible, soluble-insoluble electrochemical reactions is lacking. Peculiarities of semi-differentiation are explored; theoretical relations for semi-differentiated voltammograms are given; the exponential nature of the theoretical curve is explored; theoretical relations are compared to experimental voltammograms for AgNO3 in 1 M nitric acid at 298 K, NiCl2 in LiCl at 974 K, …

Ranging from NVIDIA GPUs to AMD GPUs and Intel GPUs: Given the heterogeneity of available accelerator cards within current supercomputers, portability is a key aspect for modern HPC applications. In Octo-Tiger, an astrophysics application simulating binary star systems and stellar mergers, we rely on Kokkos and its various execution spaces for portable compute kernels. In turn, we use HPX, a distributed task-based runtime system, to coordinate kernel launches, CPU tasks, and communication. This combination allows us to have a fine interleaving between portable CPU/GPU computations and communication, enabling scalability on various supercomputers. However, for HPX and Kokkos to work together …

Procedural Posture And Social Choice, Michael Risch Apr 2023

Procedural Posture And Social Choice, Michael Risch

Faculty Publications

Lawyers, judges, and professors have always been interested in the way cases unfold procedurally—their procedural posture. To date, however, nobody has provided a generalized theoretical framework to explain how procedural posture influences outcomes. This Article uses social choice theory to fill that void, providing much-needed insight into the ways that trial court litigation is influenced by the procedural agenda. Social choice theory considers how individual preferences translate to the collective desire. It is a messy business. One key insight of social choice theory is that whoever controls the decision agenda can control the outcome.

This Article conceptualizes trial court litigation …

Inverse Machine Learning Discovered Metamaterials With Record High Recovery Stress, Adithya Challapalli, John Konlan, Guoqiang Li

Faculty Publications

Lightweight shape memory polymer (SMP) metamaterials integrated with high strength, high flexibility, and high recovery stress are highly desired in load carrying structures and devices. A grand challenge is that these desired properties have contradictory requirements, for instance between strength and flexibility, and between flexibility and recovery stress. In this study, an inverse design framework using statistical tools and machine learning models is developed to design thin-walled cellular structures with the desired properties. The discovered thin-walled cellular structures are 3D printed using a novel SMP, which exhibited excellent structural properties with record high specific recovery stress. For comparison purpose, lattice …

Here, we describe the continued synthetic molecular evolution of a lineage of host-compatible antimicrobial peptides (AMP) intended for the treatment of wounds infected with drug-resistant, biofilm-forming bacteria. The peptides tested are variants of an evolved AMP called d-amino acid CONsensus with Glycine Absent (d-CONGA), which has excellent antimicrobial activities in vitro and in vivo. In this newest generation of rational d-CONGA variants, we tested multiple sequence-structure-function hypotheses that had not been tested in previous generations. Many of the peptide variants have lower antibacterial activity against Gram-positive or Gram-negative pathogens, especially variants that have altered hydrophobicity, secondary structure potential, or spatial …

Information Horizon Of Solar Active Regions, Jay R. Johnson, Simon Wing, Carson O'Ffill, Bishwa Neupane

Faculty Publications

Information theory is used to characterize the solar active region periodicities and memories from the Carrington map images 1974–2021. The active regions typically evolve and move from one map to the next. In order to track these active region structures in sequences of images, an innovative method based on information theory is developed. Image entropy provides a measure of the organization of structures in the images. The entropy can also be used as a filter to identify structures and partition the active regions, which are then registered for each image. The partitions are used to compute the mutual information and …

Ion Selective And Water Resistant Cellulose Nanofiber/Mxene Membrane Enabled Cycling Zn Anode At High Currents, Wangwang Xu, Xiaobin Liao, Weina Xu, Kangning Zhao, Guang Yao, Qinglin Wu

Faculty Publications

Aqueous rechargeable zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as a promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices but strongly hindered by the limited utilization of the zinc metal anode (below 5%) due to the active water/anion corrosion. Herein, an ion selective and water-resistant cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/MXene composite membrane has been developed through molecular sieving to restrict active water and anions from the electrode/electrolyte interface through dehydration of zinc ions, avoiding the water/anion-induced corrosion/decomposition. In this way, the CNF/MXene@Zn anode exhibits significantly enhanced coulombic efficiency (99.5 % at 10 mA cm-2) and low voltage hysteresis. Moreover, coated with CNF/MXene composite membrane, …

Air quality network data in China and South Korea show very high year-round mass concentrations of coarse particulate matter (PM), as inferred by the difference between PM10 and PM2.5. Coarse PM concentrations in 2015 averaged 52 µg m−3 in the North China Plain (NCP) and 23 µg m−3 in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), contributing nearly half of PM10. Strong daily correlations between coarse PM and carbon monoxide imply a dominant source from anthropogenic fugitive dust. Coarse PM concentrations in the NCP and the SMA decreased by 21 % from 2015 to 2019 and further dropped abruptly in 2020 due …

Does Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy Violate Laws Against Human Cloning?, Kerry L. Macintosh

Faculty Publications

All human beings have mitochondria within their cells that produce energy.1 Most of us inherit healthy mitochondria through the eggs of our mothers,2 but some of us are not so lucky. Mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can cause these tiny organelles to function improperly and disrupt tissues that require a lot of energy, like the brain, kidney, liver, heart, muscle, and central nervous system.3 For example, a specific mtDNA mutation induces Leigh syndrome, a condition in which seizures and respiratory failure lead to decline in mental and motor skills, disabil- ity, and death.4 Mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) offers a solution …

Wind-Current Feedback Is An Energy Sink For Oceanic Internal Waves, Audrey Delpech, Roy Barkan, Lionel Renault, James Mcwilliams, Oladeji Q. Siyanbola, Maarten C. Buijsman, Brian K. Arbic

Faculty Publications

Internal waves contain a large amount of energy in the ocean and are an important source of turbulent mixing. Ocean mixing is relevant for climate because it drives vertical transport of water, heat, carbon and other tracers. Understanding the life cycle of internal waves, from generation to dissipation, is therefore important for improving the representation of ocean mixing in climate models. Here, we provide evidence from a regional realistic numerical simulation in the northeastern Pacific that the wind can play an important role in damping internal waves through current feedback. This results in a reduction of 67% of wind power …
