Dissipative Effects On The Mean Square Displacement Of An Oscillator, X. L. Li, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell
Dissipative Effects On The Mean Square Displacement Of An Oscillator, X. L. Li, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell
Faculty Publications
The localization of an oscillator in a dissipative environment may be characterized by its mean square displacement. In the case of a general heat bath, we write down an expression for this quantity as an integral involving the imaginary part of the generalized susceptibility. This integral is evaluated explicitly in the case of both Ohmic and blackbody radiation heat baths, leading us to the conclusion that localization is enhanced by an increase of dissipation or oscillator fequency (binding) and by a decrease in temperature. © 1993.

Early Adventist Timesettings And Their Implications For Today, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Early Adventist Timesettings And Their Implications For Today, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Faculty Publications
A few Seventh-day Adventists interpret the time prophecies of Daniel and Revelation in a futuristic way. They view “prophetic days,” not in years as historical Adventists, but in literal days. A major reason for this approach is that they do not see much relevance in the way the prophecies have been interpreted. Consequently, these individuals are looking with great anticipation to a flurry of current events that they integrate into a final events prophetic scenario. Through this futuristic method they feel confident that they are accurately predicting major events in the great controversy that will usher in the Second Advent …
Virtues (And Limits) Of Shared Values: The Fourth Amendment And Miranda's Concept Of Custody, Richard A. Williamson
Virtues (And Limits) Of Shared Values: The Fourth Amendment And Miranda's Concept Of Custody, Richard A. Williamson
Faculty Publications
Miranda only protects suspects who the police subject to custodial interrogation. The concept of custody is tethered to the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination; thus, to render a suspect in custody, law enforcement officials must subject the suspect to a compelling environment that tends to undermine that privilege. In this article, Professor Richard A. Williamson examines the application of Miranda to Terry stops. He reviews the impact of the Beheler and Berkemer decisions, which held that suspects who officials stop based on reasonable suspicion, as opposed to suspects who officials arrest, are not entitled to Miranda warnings. Professor Williamson generally …

Disjoint Circuits On A Klein Bottle And A Theorem On Posets, Guoli Ding
Disjoint Circuits On A Klein Bottle And A Theorem On Posets, Guoli Ding
Faculty Publications
In this paper, we consider the problem of packing disjoint directed circuits in a digraph drawn on the Klein bottle or on the torus. We formulate a problem on posets which unifies all the problems considered by Ding et al. and by Seymour. Then we generalize all the results of their two papers by proving a theorem on our special posets. © 1993.

Analysis Of Weighted Fan-Out/Fan-In Volume Holographic Interconnections, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana, B. Keith Jenkins, A. R. Tanguay
Faculty Publications
The feasibility of employing volume holographic techniques for the implementation of highly multiplexed weighted fan-out/fan-in interconnections is analyzed on the basis of interconnection fidelity, optical throughput, and complexity of recording schedule or implementation hardware. These feasibility criteria were quantitatively evaluated using the optical beam propagation method to numerically simulate the diffraction characteristics of volume holographic interconnections recorded in a linear holographic material. We find that conventional interconnection architectures (that are based on a single coherent optical source) exhibit a direct trade-off between interconnection fidelity and optical throughput on the one hand, and recording schedule or hardware complexity on the other. …

An Inservice Model To Impact Life-Science Classroom Practice: Part Two, David P. Butts, Wyatt Anderson, Mary Atwater, Thomas Koballa, Patricia Simmons, Rosalina Hairston
Faculty Publications
This model for an inservice program describes why teachers change the nature of their students' experiences in science. In the evaluation study with 7th grade Life Science teachers in Southeast, evidence showed that as teachers' knowledge in specific topics in biology was enhanced, their classroom use of this knowledge also changed. As their knowledge of science and alternative teaching practices was expanded, their attitudes toward teaching showed that they were more aware that there was more to learn but were also more confident that they could acquire the new knowledge they needed. In their classroom, their concerns for students showed …
Low-Frequency Feature In The First-Order Raman Spectrum Of Amorphous Carbon, David D. Allred, Qi Wang, Jesus González-Hernández
Low-Frequency Feature In The First-Order Raman Spectrum Of Amorphous Carbon, David D. Allred, Qi Wang, Jesus González-Hernández
Faculty Publications
In the first-order Raman spectrum of amorphous carbon (a-C) there is a low-frequency feature in the 200-900-cm-1 region. This feature is characteristic of the highly disordered amorphous-carbon materials. We note that the intensity of this feature is very sensitive to the thermal history of samples, thus suggesting that it is an important measure of the degree of disorder of the a-C materials. We also discuss the relationship between this feature and the phonon density of states of graphite.

Exponential Growth Of An Unstable L=1 Diocotron Mode For A Hollow Electron Column In A Warm-Fluid Model, S. Neil Rasband, Ross L. Spencer, Richard R. Vanfleet
Faculty Publications
Numerical investigations of a warm-fluid model with an isothermal equation of state for the perpendicular dynamics of an axisymmetric, magnetically confined pure electron plasma predict an exponentially unstable, l=1, diocotron mode for hollow density profiles. The unstable mode can be identified with a stable, nonsmooth mode that exists in cold drift models but which is destabilized by finite temperature effects. The unstable mode has many properties similar to the experimental results reported by Driscoll [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 645 (1990)].

Partisan Monetary Policies: Presidential Influence Through The Power Of Appointment, Henry W. Chappell, Thomas M. Havrilesky, Rob Roy Mcgregor
Faculty Publications
We investigate the channels through which partisan influence from a Presidential administration could affect monetary policy-making.Influence could be a result of direct Presidential pressure exerted on members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), or it could be a result of partisan considerations in Presidential appointments to the Board of Governors. To investigate these two channels of influence, we devise and apply a method for estimating parameters of monetary policy reaction functions that can vary across individual members of the FOMC Our results suggest that the appointments process is the primary mechanism by which partisan differences in monetary policies arise.

“The social sciences should not exist. And I'm grateful that there are people in the social sciences working to destroy them.” This statement might easily be dismissed as rash and unjustified were the author not a world-class scholar, the quality of whose life-long study serves as an invitation to consider his reasons for making such a declaration. If, in the end, we cannot concur with Dr. Arthur Henry King's verdict on the ultimate value of the social sciences, might not his analysis of its problems give us a new perspective from which we might reevaluate it? Perhaps there is something …
Precision Spectroscopy Using The Lamb Dip In A Pure Ion Plasma, P. N. Barnes, Grant W. Hart
Precision Spectroscopy Using The Lamb Dip In A Pure Ion Plasma, P. N. Barnes, Grant W. Hart
Faculty Publications
The use of the Lamb dip as a technique for precision spectroscopy in a non-neutral plasma is explored through computer modeling. Using singly ionized magnesium as the ion and under typical pure ion plasma conditions, the measurement appears to be feasible. Under the conditions calculated here, the Lamb dip is only 4% wider than the natural linewidth of the transition.
