Structure Of The Epididymal Retinoic Acid Binding Protein At 2.1 Å Resolution, Marcia E. Newcomer Sep 1993

Structure Of The Epididymal Retinoic Acid Binding Protein At 2.1 Å Resolution, Marcia E. Newcomer

Faculty Publications

Background: Androgen-dependent proteins in the lumen of the epididymis are required for sperm maturation. One of these is a retinoic acid binding protein, E-RABP, which binds both all-trans and 9-cis retinoic acid. The other retinoid-binding proteins whose structures are known do not bind 9-cis retinoids. Results: We describe the X-ray structure determination of E-RABP with and without bound ligand. The ligand binds deep in the β-barrel of the protein, the β-ionone ring innermost. The binding site, like the ligand, is amphipathic and the deepest part of the cavity is formed by a ring of aromatic amino acids. The isoprene tail …

Matrices Over Differential Fields Which Commute With Their Derivative, William A. Adkins, Jean Claude Evard, Robert M. Guralnick Sep 1993

Matrices Over Differential Fields Which Commute With Their Derivative, William A. Adkins, Jean Claude Evard, Robert M. Guralnick

Faculty Publications

A theorem is proved concerning the diagonalizability of a matrix over a differential field by means of a similarity transformation from the field of constants of the differential field. This result contains, as a special case, known results concerning the diagonalizability over the complex numbers of a Hermitian matrix of analytic functions under the hypothesis that the matrix commutes with its derivative. © 1993.

The current Internet architecture, embodied in the Internet Protocol (IP) network protocol, offers a very simple service model: point-to-point best-effort service. In recent years, several new classes of distributed applications have been developed, such as remote video, multimedia conferencing, data fusion, visualization, and virtual reality. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Internet’s primitive service model is inadequate for these new applications. This inadequacy stems from the failure of the point-to-point best-effort service model to address two application requirements. First, many of these applications are very sensitive to the quality of service their packets receive. For a network to deliver …

Classification Of The Tor-Algebras Of Codimension Four Almost Complete Intersections, Andrew R. Kustin Sep 1993

Classification Of The Tor-Algebras Of Codimension Four Almost Complete Intersections, Andrew R. Kustin

Faculty Publications

Let (R, m, k) be a local ring in which 2 is a unit. Assume that every element of k has a square root in k . We classify the algebras Tor'(R/J, k) as J varies over all grade four almost complete intersection ideals in R. The analogous classification has already been found when J varies over all grade four Gorenstein ideals [21], and when J varies over all ideals of grade at most three [5, 30]. The present paper makes use of the classification, in [21], of the Tor-algebraso f codimension four Gorenstein rings, as well as the (usually …

'Death And Taxes' And Hypocrisy, John W. Lee Sep 1993

'Death And Taxes' And Hypocrisy, John W. Lee

Faculty Publications

Professor Lee finds the "death and taxes" poem by Rep. Ewing hypocritical for several reasons. He notes that the poem is derived from a 1920s populist attack on Treasury Secretary Mellon for cutting taxes on the rich in the name of trickle-down economics while relying on regressive excise taxes on the masses -- an attack similar to that waged by then-Governor Clinton during the 1992 presidential campaign. Further, says Lee, the Bush administration displayed more of a preference for regressive excise taxes than the Clinton plan, whose reliance in part on consumption taxes appears a consequence of 25 years of …

Monotone Clutters, Guoli Ding Aug 1993

Monotone Clutters, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

A clutter is k-monotone, completely monotone or threshold if the corresponding Boolean function is k-monotone, completely monotone or threshold, respectively. A characterization of k-monotone clutters in terms of excluded minors is presented here. This result is used to derive a characterization of 2-monotone matroids and of 3-monotone matroids (which turn out to be all the threshold matroids). © 1993.

Distributions Of Pigments And Primary Production In A Gulf-Stream Meander, Steven E. Lohrenz, John J. Cullen, David A. Phinney, Donald B. Olson, Charles S. Yentsch Aug 1993

Distributions Of Pigments And Primary Production In A Gulf-Stream Meander, Steven E. Lohrenz, John J. Cullen, David A. Phinney, Donald B. Olson, Charles S. Yentsch

Faculty Publications

An investigation was made of physical effects of Gulf Stream meandering on the vertical and horizontal distributions of photosynthetic pigments and primary production. Cruises were conducted in the vicinity of a meander east of 73-degrees-W and north of 37-degrees-N from September 21 to October 5 (leg 1) and October 12-21, 1988 (leg 2), on the R/V Cape Hatteras. Relationships of photosynthesis (normalized to chlorophyll) to irradiance (P-1) did not show large horizontal variation, and water column composite P-I curves from leg 1 and leg 2 were similar. Therefore a single P-I curve derived from pooled data was used to model …

Radially Symmetrical Flow Of Reacting Liquid With Changing Viscosity, S.E. Solovyov, V.A. Volpert, S.P. Davytan Aug 1993

Radially Symmetrical Flow Of Reacting Liquid With Changing Viscosity, S.E. Solovyov, V.A. Volpert, S.P. Davytan

Faculty Publications

Frontal regimens for one-dimensional flow of reacting liquid with changing viscosity are studied. Stationary solutions are investigated for the case of narrow reaction zones that shrink to a front. The results of numerical solution of the nonstationary problem are presented. Complex oscillations resulting from period-doubling bifurcations are found.

Driven Diffusion, Kawasaki Dynamics, Mixing, And Spatial Ordering In An Interacting Lattice-Gas, Yan He, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Kawasaki dynamics is used to study the transport properties of a nonequilibrium steady state system of interacting lattice gas of oppositely charged particles in a linear gradient field in two dimensions. The rms displacements show unusual nondiffusive transport. The effective conductivity varies with the temperature which deviates from the Arrhenius law and depends on the range of interaction. Density of a fully mixed state decays with temperature with a power law. Onset of spatial ordering occurs in a certain temperature range at a fixed range of interaction.

Faculty Publications

The last millenium of Earth history is of particular interest because it documents the environmental complexities of both natural variability and anthropogenic activity. We have analyzed the major ions contained in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP 2) ice core from the present to ∼674 A.D. to yield an environmental reconstruction for this period that includes a description of nitrogen and sulfur cycling, volcanic emissions, sea salt and terrestrial influences. We have adapted and extended mathematical procedures for extracting sporadic (e.g., volcanic) events, secular trends, and periodicities found in the data sets. Finally, by not assuming that periodic components …

High-Order Harmonic Generation With Short-Pulse Lasers, Kenneth J. Schafer, Jeffrey L. Krause, Kenneth C. Kulander Jul 1993

High-Order Harmonic Generation With Short-Pulse Lasers, Kenneth J. Schafer, Jeffrey L. Krause, Kenneth C. Kulander

Faculty Publications

Recent progress in the understanding of high-order harmonic conversion from atoms and ions exposed to high-intensity, short-pulse optical lasers is reviewed. We find that ions can produce harmonics comparable in strength to those obtained from neutral atoms, and that the emission extends to much higher order. Simple scaling laws for the strength of the harmonic emission and the maximum observable harmonic are suggested. These results imply that the photoemission observed in recent experiments in helium and neon contains contributions from ions as well as neutrals.

Stable Sets Versus Independent Sets, Guoli Ding Jul 1993

Stable Sets Versus Independent Sets, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

Let G=(V, E) be a graph and let L(G) be the set of stable sets of G. The matroidal number of G, denoted by m(G), is the smallest integer m such that L(G)=J1∪J2∪⋯∪Jm for some matroids Mi=(V,Ji)(i=1,2,...,m). We characterize the graphs of matroidal number at most m for all m≥1. For m≤3, we show that the graphs of matroidal number at most m can be characterized by excluding finitely many induced subgraphs. We also consider a similar problem which replaces 'union' by 'intersection'. © 1993.

Omitted-Ability Bias And The Increase In The Return To Schooling, Mckinley L. Blackburn, David Neumark Jul 1993

Omitted-Ability Bias And The Increase In The Return To Schooling, Mckinley L. Blackburn, David Neumark

Faculty Publications

Over the 1980s, there were sharp increases in the return to schooling estimated with conventional wage regressions. We explore whether the relationship between ability and schooling changed over this period in ways that would have increased the schooling coefficient in these regressions. Our empirical results reject the hypothesis that an increase in the bias of the schooling coefficient, due to a change in the relationship between ability and schooling, has contributed to observed increases in the return to schooling. We also find that the increase in the schooling return has occurred for workers with relatively high levels of academic ability.

A Decomposition Of Locally Finite Graphs, Bogdan Oporowski Jul 1993

A Decomposition Of Locally Finite Graphs, Bogdan Oporowski

Faculty Publications

We prove that every infinite, connected, locally finite graph G can be expressed as an edge-disjoint union of a leafless tree T, rooted at an arbitrarily chosen vertex of G, and a collection of finite graphs H1, H2, H3,...such that, for all i less than j, the vertices common to Hi and Hj lie in T, and no vertex of Hj lies on T between a vertex of Hi∩T and the root. © 1993.

Linking Teacher Educators, Knowledge, And The Quality Of Practice In Schools, Murrary F. Mitchell Jul 1993

Linking Teacher Educators, Knowledge, And The Quality Of Practice In Schools, Murrary F. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Children in this country are entrusted to teachers in schools for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, approximately 36 weeks a year, for 12 to 13 years. Citizens concerned with the future want to know if the children of today are being prepared for the world of tomorrow. Parents want to know what is being done to and for their sons and daughters. And in these times of financial cutbacks, taxpayers want to know where their tax dollars are going. There is widespread belief that schools in general, and teaching in particular, should be much better today than …

The Effect Of The Postdivorce Relationship On Paternal Involvement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Constance R. Ahrons, Richard B. Miller

Faculty Publications

Longitudinal analyses of data from 64 pairs of former spouses indicate that the quality of their postdivorce relationship had a significant impact on fathers' involvement with their children. The strength of the influence declined over time, however, as the patterns of interaction in the reorganized binuclear family became more stable.
