We study the power-law tails in the evolution of massless fields around a fixed background geometry corresponding to a black hole. We give analytical arguments for their existence at scri+, at the future horizon, and at future timelike infinity. We confirm their existence with numerical integrations of the curved spacetime wave equation on the background of a Schwarzschild and a Reissner-Nordström black hole. These results are relevant to studies of mass inflation and the instability of Cauchy horizons. The analytic arguments also suggest the behavior of the full nonlinear dynamics, which we study numerically in a companion paper. © 1994 …

Extended Loops: A New Arena For Nonperturbative Quantum Gravity, Cayetano Di Bartolo, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We propose a new representation for gauge theories and quantum gravity. Alternatively, it can be viewed as a new framework for doing computations in the loop representation. It is based on the use of a novel mathematical structure that extends the group of loops into a Lie group. This extension allows the use of functional methods to solve the diffeomorphism and Hamiltonian constraint equations. It puts in a precise framework some of the regularization problems of the loop representation. It has practical advantages in the search for quantum states. Making use of it we are able to find a new …

We compare the predictions of linearized theory for the radiation produced in the collapse of a spherically symmetric scalar field with a full numerical integration of the Einstein equations. We find power-law tails and quasinormal ringing remarkably similar to predictions of linearized theory even in cases where nonlinearities are crucial. We also show that power-law tails develop even when the collapsing scalar field fails to produce a black hole. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

Colliding Black Holes: The Close Limit, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin Jan 1994

Colliding Black Holes: The Close Limit, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

The problem of the mutual attraction and joining of two black holes is of importance as both a source of gravitational waves and as a testbed of numerical relativity. If the holes start out close enough that they are initially surrounded by a common horizon, the problem can be viewed as a perturbation of a single black hole. We take initial data due to Misner for close black holes, apply perturbation theory, and evolve the data with the Zerilli equation. The computed gravitational radiation agrees with and extends the results of full numerical computations. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

Chromosome And Sperm Size Of Holsteins With And Without Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency, H. C. Steinholt, J. E. Chandler, R. A. Baron, R. W. Adkinson

Faculty Publications

The objective was to evaluate bull differences in chromosomal and spermatozoal areas related to the occurrence of the bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome. Lymphocyte chromosomes from 30 Holstein bulls and 2 Holstein heifers were measured using image analysis and computer-enhanced video-microscopy. Spermatozoal head areas from 29 of the 30 bulls were measured. Autosomal rank was based on decreasing area. Average total autosomal areas were not the same across bulls. One group of bulls had significantly smaller average chromosomal areas than the others; this group carried bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome. Area measures of spermatozoal heads showed that bulls with bovine …

Nanovid Microscopy For Assessing Sperm Membrane Changes Induced By In Vitro Capacitating And Acrosomal Reacting Procedures, Suzanne D. Degelos, Michael P. Wilson, John E. Chandler

Faculty Publications

ABSTRACT: This study was to verify the usefulness of Nanovid microscopy techniques for evaluating induced modifications in bovine spermatozoal membranes. Frozen thawed bovine sperm were labeled with 20‐nm colloidal gold particles bound to concanavalin A (ConA) or heparin ligands. Sperm membrane changes were induced in vitro by capacitating and acrosome‐reacting procedures. Capacitatton was induced by incubation with 10 μg/ml of heparin for 4 hours at 37°C, 5% CO2, and high humidity. Membrane changes associated with the acrosome reaction were induced by addition of lysophosphatidyicholine (100 μg/ml) and incubation for 15 minutes at 37°C, 5% CO2, and high humidity. Gray intensity …

How Reasonable Is The Reasonable Man?: Police And Excessive Force, Geoffrey P. Alpert, William C. Smith

Faculty Publications

The authority of the police to use force represents one of the most misunderstood powers granted to representatives of government. Police officers are authorized to use both psychological and physical force to apprehend criminals and solve crimes. This Article focuses on issues of physical force. After a brief introduction and a review of current legal issues in the use of force, the Article discusses "reasonableness" and the unrealistic expectation which is placed on police to understand, interpret, and follow vague "reasonableness" guidelines. Until the expectations and limitations on the use of force are clarified, in behavioral terms, police officers will …

The Significance Of Ngugi's Recent Writing: Or Why Ngugi Wa Thiong'o May Not Want The Nobel Prize (And Why He Should Get It), Patrick G. Scott

Faculty Publications

Discusses the development from the 1960s to the 1980s of writings by the Kenyan author and activist Ngugi wa Thiong'o, examines some of the difficulty Us- and European-based critics have found with Nugi's work from the 1980s, and argues that courses in African literature need to move beyond the established canon of the immediate post-Independence period to reflect more recent developments. Works discussed include Ngugi's novels Devil on the Cross and Matigari. Originally presented at the Southeast Regional Symposium for African Studies, Athens, Georgia, 1994

Limitation Of Legal Malpractice Actions: Defining Actual Injury And The Problem Of Simultaneous Litigation, Tyler T. Ochoa, Andrew Wilstrich Jan 1994

Limitation Of Legal Malpractice Actions: Defining Actual Injury And The Problem Of Simultaneous Litigation, Tyler T. Ochoa, Andrew Wilstrich

Faculty Publications

In this article, we will first review the development of the "actual injury" tolling provision in California, from its judicial adoption in 1971 to its legislative adoption in 1977. Second, we will explore the policies underlying the legal malpractice statute of limitation and the countervailing policies that may make delayed accrual or tolling desirable in situations involving simultaneous litigation. Third, we will examine case law applying the "actual injury" tolling provision to various fact situations and analyze potential legal solutions to the problem of defining "actual injury," including the doctrine of equitable tolling. Finally, we will demonstrate how the doctrine …

A Proposal That Congress Create A Commission On Federal Court Structure, Thomas E. Baker

Faculty Publications

Predicting the shape and size of the federal judiciary in the future requires us to gaze into a rather clouded crystal ball; clouded, because the prediction of future changes in any institution is a hazardous business, and clouded even more in this case because political pressures as well as rational discourse will determine what the federal courts look like a generation hence.

Effects Of Dietary Boron In Rats Fed A Vitamin D-Deficient Diet, J. N. Dupre, M. J. Keenan, M. Hegsted, A. M. Brudevold

Faculty Publications

Although boron has long been known to be a required nutrient for plants, it was not until recently that there was any suggestion of a nutritional requirement for animals and humans. Addition of boron to the diet of vitamin D-deficient chicks indicated that boron may play a role in animal nutrition. Studies with rats have demonstrated that supplemental dietary boron has most marked effects when the diet is deficient in known nutrients. We observed higher apparent-balance values of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus for rats fed a vitamin D-deprived diet with dietary supplemental boron (2.72 ppm), than for rats fed the …
