Individual-Level Determinants Of Employee Shirking, Timothy A. Judge, Timothy D. Chandler
Individual-Level Determinants Of Employee Shirking, Timothy A. Judge, Timothy D. Chandler
Faculty Publications
Employee shirking, where workers give less than full effort on the job, has typically been investigated as a construct subject to organization-level influences. Neglected are individual differences that could explain why employees in the same organization or work-group might shirk. Using a sample of workers from the health care profession in the United States, the present study sought to address these limitations by investigating subjective well-being (a dispositional construct), job satisfaction, as well as other individual-level determinants of shirking. Results indicate that whites shirk significantly more than nonwhites, and that subjective well-being, job satisfaction, and age have significant, negative effects …

On The Information Content Of Calls Of Convertible Securities, Anthony K. Byrd, William T. Moore
On The Information Content Of Calls Of Convertible Securities, Anthony K. Byrd, William T. Moore
Faculty Publications
Negative stock price reactions to conversion-forcing calls of convertible bonds and preferred stocks are reexamined, and most of the sample firms are shown to exhibit full price recovery by the end of the conversion period. In addition, analysts' earnings forecasts, both short-term and long-term, are found to be revised upward following call announcements for convertible bonds and preferred stocks. The combined findings cast doubt on the established belief that such capital structure decisions signal negative information about firm value.
Defectiveness Restated: Exploding The "Strict" Products Liability Myth, David G. Owen
Defectiveness Restated: Exploding The "Strict" Products Liability Myth, David G. Owen
Faculty Publications
Strict liability in tort has occupied the core of modern products liability doctrine ever since Dean Prosser first penned the most often cited Restatement section in history-section 402A of the Second Restatement of Torts. In the Third Restatement, the ALl has completely restructured the definition of product defectiveness. The inscrutable phrase that has confounded courts and commentators for so many years- "defective condition unreasonably dangerous"- is now trifurcated according to the separate types of product defects: manufacturing defects, design defects, and warnings defects. In this important article, Professor Owen explores the conceptual developments that led to the restated liability formulations …
Galvanostatic Pulse And Pulse Reverse Plating Of Zinc–Nickel Alloys From Sulfate Electrolytes On A Rotating Disc Electrode, Branko Popov, M. Ramasubramanian, S. N. Popova, Ralph E. White, Ken-Ming Yin
Galvanostatic Pulse And Pulse Reverse Plating Of Zinc–Nickel Alloys From Sulfate Electrolytes On A Rotating Disc Electrode, Branko Popov, M. Ramasubramanian, S. N. Popova, Ralph E. White, Ken-Ming Yin
Faculty Publications
Galvanostatic pulse and pulse reverse techniques have been used to study the plating of zinc–nickel alloys in the presence of nonyl phenyl polyethylene oxide. The effects of average current density, rotation speed of disc electrode and the presence of nonyl phenyl polyethylene oxide in the electrolyte on deposition of zinc–nickel alloys were evaluated. Zinc–nickel plating bath solution chemistry was studied by determining the equilibrium concentrations at various pH levels. It was found that the alloy composition was determined by solution equilibria, mass transfer of the electroactive species within the diffusion layer and by the surface coverage of nonyl phenyl polyethylene …

Anodic Oxidation Of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid On Platinum Electrode In Alkaline Medium, S. N. R. Pakalapati, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The anodic oxidation of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied in alkaline medium on a smooth platinum electrode. Bulk electrolysis indicated that stable organic intermediates (formaldehyde and glyoxal) are formed during the oxidation of EDTA and that complete oxidation to CO2 can be achieved. The proposed pathway suggests that the acetate groups in EDTA are initially oxidized, generating formaldehyde and ethylenediamine. The rest potential of EDTA (0.066 to 0.164 V vs. Hg/HgO) was observed to be higher than for other organic species. In alkaline medium, very little EDTA oxidation was found to occur on bare platinum. Limiting-current behavior due to …

Oxygen And Ph Regulation Of Protein Synthesis In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Kurt E. Kwast, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Publications
To identify factors responsible for the down-regulation of mitochondrial biosynthetic processes during anoxia in encysted Artemia franciscana embryos, the effects of oxygen limitation and pH on protein synthesis were investigated in isolated mitochondria. At the optimal pH of 7.5, exposure of mitochondria to anoxia decreases the protein synthesis rate by 79%. Rates were suppressed by a further 10% at pH 6.8, the intracellular pH (pH,) measured under anoxia in vivo. Matrix pH, measured under identical conditions, was 8.43 ± 0.01 at an extramitochondrial pH of 7.9 (mean ± S.E.M. n = 3), 8.05 ± 0.01 at pH 7.5, and 7.10 …
Carbohydrate Mobilization During Germination Of Post-Diapausing Gemmules Of The Freshwater Sponge Eunapius Fragilis, Stephen H. Loomis, Louis F. Ungemach, Bruce R. Branchini, Steven C. Hand, Paul E. Fell
Carbohydrate Mobilization During Germination Of Post-Diapausing Gemmules Of The Freshwater Sponge Eunapius Fragilis, Stephen H. Loomis, Louis F. Ungemach, Bruce R. Branchini, Steven C. Hand, Paul E. Fell
Faculty Publications
Post-diapausing gemmules of the freshwater sponge Eunapius fragilis were found to contain sorbitol and glycogen as their primary carbohydrates. The sorbitol probably acts to increase the tolerance of the gemmules to freezing and desiccation. During germination, average sorbitol levels-measured as micromoles of sorbitol per gram of fresh weight of gemmule tissue (μmol/gfw)-declined from a control value of 36 μmol/gfw to about 4 μmol/gfw. Concomitantly, average glycogen levels increased from a control value of 29 μmol/gfw to a steady-state level of 62 μmol/gfw. It is probable that glycogen is being synthesized at the expense of sorbitol. The breakdown of sorbitol was …

Climate Forcing And Thermal Feedback Of Residual Lake-Ice Covers In The High Arctic, Peter T. Doran, Christopher P. Mckay, W. Peter Adams, Michael C. English, Robert A. Wharton, Michael A. Meyer
Faculty Publications
A discontinuous ice coverage and lake temperature record of 36-yr duration has been compiled for Colour Lake (79°25'N, 90°45'W) on Axel Heiberg Island, Northwest Territories. About once every 6 yr, the ice cover remains through the entire summer, creating a residual ice cover the following winter. Residual ice covers are more frequent in the last 10 yr (1986-1995) than in the 20 yr from 1959 to 1978, indicating a reduction in climate factors controlling ice decay. These factors are identified as the number of thawing degree-days, suggesting a tendency toward cooler summers over the last decade. We report year-round meteorology …

Aluminum (Al) has been suggested to be an important stress factor in forest decline due to its mobilization in soil following atmospheric deposition of acidic pollutants. A major goal of our research is to develop physiological and biochemical markers of stress in trees using cell cultures and whole plants. Needles of red spruce (Picea rubens) collected from several sites in the northeastern United States and red spruce cells grown in suspension cultures were examined for polyamine and inorganic-ion content. The cells in culture were exposed to various concentrations of Al for different lengths of time. Exposure to Al increased putrescine …

Automatic Correlation And Calibration Of Noisy Sensor Readings Using Elite Genetic Algorithms, R. R. Brooks, S. S. Iyengar, J. Chen
Faculty Publications
This paper explores an image processing application of optimization techniques which entails interpreting noisy sensor data. The application is a generalization of image correlation; we attempt to find the optimal gruence which matches two overlapping gray scale images corrupted with noise. Both tabu search and genetic algorithms are used to find the parameters which match the two images. A genetic algorithm approach using an elitist reproduction scheme is found to provide significantly superior results.

Historical Roots Of Structural Ambiguities In English: A Survey Of Some Selected Grammatical Features, Dallin D. Oaks
Historical Roots Of Structural Ambiguities In English: A Survey Of Some Selected Grammatical Features, Dallin D. Oaks
Faculty Publications
English is a language with many possibilities for wordplay, and word lay has been exploited by entertainers and advertisers. At times it involves simple puns, and at other times complex structural plays on words. Important developments in the history of the English language contribute to the current possibilities for word play. This article will examine some of these developments that have contributed specifically to wordplay involving structural ambiguities.
Nitrogen Release During Coal Combustion, Thomas H. Fletcher, Larry L. Baxter, Reginald E. Mitchell, Robert H. Hurt
Nitrogen Release During Coal Combustion, Thomas H. Fletcher, Larry L. Baxter, Reginald E. Mitchell, Robert H. Hurt
Faculty Publications
Experiments in entrained flow reactors at combustion temperatures are performed to resolve the rank dependence of nitrogen release on an elemental basis for a suite of 15 U.S. coals ranging from lignite to low-volatile bituminous. Data were obtained as a function of particle conversion, with overall mass loss up to 99 % on a dry, ash-free basis. Nitrogen release rates are presented relative to both carbon loss and overall mass loss. During devolatilization, fractional nitrogen release from low-rank coals is much slower than fractional mass release and noticeably slower than fractional carbon release. As coal rank increases, fractional nitrogen release …
Diphthongization In Spanish Derivational Morphology: An Empirical Investigation, David Eddington
Diphthongization In Spanish Derivational Morphology: An Empirical Investigation, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
The alternation between the mid-vowels / e/, /o/ and the diphthongs /je/ and /we/ is widespread in Spanish, and several rule-based analyses claim to account for it. However, they are founded on a small body of evidence. These analyses are evaluated against data from a large corpus, and cannot account for the non-discrete nature of diphthongization as evidenced in the corpus. The corpus data suggest that diphthongization has a gradient relationship to the derivational suffixes. · A nonderivational account, based on Bybee's model (1985, 1988, 1991), better embodies the scalar relationship between diphthongization and the suffixes. This relationship was tested …
The Psychological Status Of Phonological Analyses, David Eddington
The Psychological Status Of Phonological Analyses, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
This paper casts doubt on the psychological relevance of many phonological analyses. There are four reasons for this: 1) theoretical adequacy does not necessarily imply psychological significance; 2) most approaches are nonempirical in that they are not subject to potential spatiotemporal falsification; 3) phonological analyses are established with little or no recourse to the speakers of the language via experimental psychology; 4) the limited base of evidence which most analyses are founded on is further cause for skepticism.
Conversion Of Coal Tar To Soot During Coal Pyrolysis In A Post-Flame Environment, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jinliang Ma, Brent W. Webb
Conversion Of Coal Tar To Soot During Coal Pyrolysis In A Post-Flame Environment, Thomas H. Fletcher, Jinliang Ma, Brent W. Webb
Faculty Publications
Coal pyrolysis experiments were performed in the postflame region of a CH4/H2/air flat-flame burner operating under fuel-rich conditions, where the temperature and gas compositions were similar to those in the near-burner region of a large-scale coal-fired furnace. Volatiles released from the coal particles formed a cloud of soot particles at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. The soot particles in the cloud were collected at different residence times using a water-cooled, nitrogen-quenched suction probe. Test variables included the reaction temperature and coal type. Soot yields in terms of weight percentage of dry ash-free coal were measured based on bulk …
Aerodynamic Mechanisms Underlying Treatment-Related Changes In Vocal Intensity In Patients With Parkinson Disease, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig
Aerodynamic Mechanisms Underlying Treatment-Related Changes In Vocal Intensity In Patients With Parkinson Disease, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to document changes in aerodynamic and glottographic aspects of vocal function in patients with Parkinson disease who received two forms of high effort treatment. Previous reports (Ramig, Countryman, Thompson, & Horii, 1995) have documented increased sound pressure level (SPL) following treatment that trained phonation and respiration (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment: LSVT), but not for treatment that trained respiration only (R). In order to examine the mechanisms underlying these differences, measures of maximum flow declination rate (MFDR) and estimated subglottal pressure (Psub)were made before and after treatment. A measure of relative vocal fold adduction (EGGW) …
Development Of A Method For Studying Thematic Content Of Psychotherapy Sessions, P. Scott Richards, Susan D. Lonborg
Development Of A Method For Studying Thematic Content Of Psychotherapy Sessions, P. Scott Richards, Susan D. Lonborg
Faculty Publications
The authors developed a measure for categorizing the nature of the topic that clients and therapists discuss from moment to moment during psychotherapy. The Counseling Topic Classification System (CTCS) contains 55 topics and 8 emotional categories. It was used to code the thematic content of Donald Meichenbaum's and Hans Strupp's initial therapy sessions with a client named Richard. Our findings provided preliminary evidence that the CTCS is useful for coding the core topic of initial therapy sessions and that thematic content may be an important process and contextual vari- able. Methods are described for studying thematic content as a contextual …
