Two Paradigms For The Market Value Of Liabilities, Robert R. Reitano, Craig B. Merrill
Two Paradigms For The Market Value Of Liabilities, Robert R. Reitano, Craig B. Merrill
Faculty Publications
Financial valuation models can be applied to insurance- related claims. In particular, these models are being employed to calculate the market value of insurance liabilities. The goal of this paper is to introduce the various approaches to valuation that are used in the finance literature and show how the valuation of insurance liabilities fits into the financial valuation framework. The theory suggests that securitization of insurance liabilities may lead to better market value calculations.
The Delisting Bias In Crsp Data, Tyler Shumway
The Delisting Bias In Crsp Data, Tyler Shumway
Faculty Publications
I document a delisting bias in the stock return data base maintained by the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP). I find that delists for bankruptcy and other negative reasons are generally surprises and that correct delisting returns are not available for most of the stocks that have been delisted for negative reasons since 1962. Using over-the-counter price data, I show that the omitted delisting returns are large. Implications of the bias are discussed.

In academic circles, when one speaks of scholarship, one speaks of scholarly legal publications. While such writing is obviously important for reform as well as for professional self-preservation,, I would take the term scholarship a step further. As true students of the law, we have a status in society that gives us a forum, and as Latinos/as we have an obligation to use our status to affect our communities. I, therefore, strongly support becoming more active by getting our voices heard beyond traditional modes of legal discourse. There are scores of communication mediums, such as newspapers and non-legal journals whose …

On The Dynamic Behaviour Of A Thermoviscoelastic Body In Frictional Contact With A Rigid Obstacle, Kenneth Kuttler, K. T. Andrews, M. Shillor
Faculty Publications
We consider the dynamic behaviour of a thermoviscoelastic body which may come into frictional contact with a rigid obstacle. The frictional contact is modelled by general contact and friction laws which include as special cases the power law normal compliance condition and the corresponding generalization of Coulomb's law of dry friction. The stress-strain constitutive relation is assumed to be of Kelvin-Voigt type and the frictional heat generation on the contact surface is taken into account. In this setting we establish the existence of a solution to a weak version of the energy-elasticity system which consists of a parabolic equation coupled …

Tradeoffs In The Design Of A Spaceborne Scanning Pencil Beam Scatterometer: Application To Seawinds, David G. Long, Chialin T. Wu, Michael W. Spencer
Faculty Publications
SeaWinds is a spaceborne wind scatterometer to be flown on the second Japanese Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS-II) in 1999. An important international element of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS), SeaWinds is an advanced follow-on to the NASA scatterometer (NSCAT) on the first ADEOS platform. Unlike previous operational spaceborne scatterometer systems. SeaWinds employs a scanning "pencil-beam" antenna rather than a "fan-beam" antenna, making the instrument more compact and yielding greater ocean coverage. The goals of this paper are twofold. First, the overall SeaWinds functional design and backscatter measurement approach are described, and the relative advantages of the pencil-beam technique are …

The differential cross section dσ/dt for elastic ρ0 photoproduction, γp → ρ0ρ (ρ0 → π+π-), has been measured in ep interactions at HERA. The squared four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex, t, has been determined directly by measuring the momentum of the scattered proton using the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS), a large scale system of silicon micro-strip detectors operating close to the HERA proton beam. The LPS allows the measurement of the momentum of high energy protons scattered at small angles with accuracies of 0.4% for the longitudinal momentum and 5 MeV for the transverse momentum. Photoproduction of ρ0 …

Using the ZEUS detector at HERA, we have studied the reaction e+p → e+X for Q2 > 5000 GeV2 with a 20.1 pb-1 data sample collected during the years 1994 to 1996. For Q2 below 15000 GeV2, the data are in good agreement with Standard Model expectations. For Q2 > 35000 GeV2, two events are observed while 0.145 ± 0.013 events are expected. A statistical analysis of a large ensemble of simulated Standard Model experiments indicates that with probability 6.0%, an excess at least as unlikely as that observed would occur above some Q2 cut. For x > 0.55 and y > 0.25, four …

The reaction γ p → J/ψ p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The cross section for elastic J/ψ photoproduction has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre of mass energy W in the range 40 < W < 140 GeV at a median photon virtuality Q2 of 5 × 10-5 GeV2. The photoproduction cross section, σγp→J/ψp, is observed to rise steeply with W. A fit to the data presented in this paper to determine the parameter δ in the form σγp→J/ψp α Wδ yields the value δ = 0.92±0.14±0.10. The differential cross section dσ/d|t| is presented over the range |t| < 1.0 GeV2 where t is the square of the four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex. dσ/d|t| falls exponentially with a slope parameter of 4.6 ± 0.4-0.6+0.4 GeV-2. The measured decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. © Springer-Verlag 1997.
Evaluating Forecasts Of Correlation Using Option Pricing, Michael S. Gibson, Brian H. Boyer
Evaluating Forecasts Of Correlation Using Option Pricing, Michael S. Gibson, Brian H. Boyer
Faculty Publications
A forecast of the correlation between two asset prices is required to price or hedge an option whose payoff depends on both asset prices or to measure the risk of a portfolio whose return depends on both asset prices. However, a number of factors make it difficult to evaluate forecasts of correlation. We develop a forecast evaluation methodology based on option pricing, extending a technique that Engle et al (1993) introduced to evaluate volatility forecasts. A forecast of the variance-covariance matrix of joint asset returns is used to generate a trading strategy for a package of simulated options. The most …

The Influence Of Decision Aids On User Behavior: Implications For Knowledge Acquisition And Inappropriate Reliance, Steven M. Glover, Douglas F. Prawitt, Brian C. Spilker

Structured decision aids are widely used in many organizational settings, and their influence on judgment consistency and accuracy have received considerable attention in the literature. While two benefits commonly associated with decision aid use are improved judgment and enhanced expertise development, relatively little attention has been directed toward the potential influence of decision aids on decision maker behavior. In particular, we argue that the use of structured aids may influence relatively inexperienced decision makers to approach aided tasks mechanistically, without becoming actively involved in the task or judgment. Such passive decision behavior may, in some situations, threaten gains in performance …

The Effect Of Ultrasonic Frequency Upon Enhanced Killing Ofp. Aeruginosa Biofilms, Zhen Qian, Richard D. Sagers, William G. Pitt
Faculty Publications
It is widely recognized that the bacteria sequestered in a biofilm on a medical implant are much more resistant to antibiotics than their planktonic counterparts. Recent studies have shown that application of antibiotic along with low power ultrasound significantly increases the killing of planktonic bacteria by the antibiotic. Herein is reported a similar application of antibiotic and ultrasound to sessile bacteria in biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on a polyethylene substrate. Biofilm viability was measured after exposure to 12 μg/ml gentamicin sulfate and 10 mW/cm2 ultrasound at frequencies of 70 kHz, 500 kHz, 2.25 MHz, and 10 MHz. The results …

The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Participate In A Group Decision Task, Lee Robinson, Martin Fujiki, Bonnie Brinton, Valyne J. Watson
Faculty Publications
This study examined the ability of 6 children with specific language impairment (SLI), ages 8:10 to 12:5 (years; months), to participate in a group negotiation task. Each child interacted with two peers to select toys that children their age would enjoy. Performance was compared to both chronological age-similar (CS) peers and language similar (LS) peers performing the same task. Analyses of the resulting interactions indicated that subjects with SLI produced significantly fewer utterances than the other children in the triad. Similar differences were not observed in the CS or LS triads. Additionally, significantly fewer utterances were addressed to the children …

The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Access And Participate In An Ongoing Interaction, Lee Robinson, Martin Fujiki, Julie Campbell Spencer
Faculty Publications
This study investigated the ability of 6 children with specific language impairment (SLI), ages 8;10 to 12;5 (years;months), to enter and participate in an ongoing dyadic interaction. Performance was compared to that of 6 chronological age-matched (CA) peers and 6 language-similar (LS) peers. All children in the LS and CA groups successfully accessed the interaction, and most did so quickly. Two children from the SLI group did not access, and the 4 remaining subjects required varying amounts of time to access. Following successful access, the triadic interactions of subjects were examined. The accessing children with SU talked significantly less, were …
Improved Heterogeneous Distance Functions, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson
Improved Heterogeneous Distance Functions, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson

Instance-based learning techniques typically handle continuous and linear input values well, but often do not handle nominal input attributes appropriately. The Value Difference Metric (VDM) was designed to find reasonable distance values between nominal attribute values, but it largely ignores continuous attributes, requiring discretization to map continuous values into nominal values. This paper proposes three new heterogeneous distance functions, called the Heterogeneous Value Difference Metric (HVDM), the Interpolated Value Difference Metric (IVDM), and the Windowed Value Difference Metric (WVDM). These new distance functions are designed to handle applications with nominal attributes, continuous attributes, or both. In experiments on 48 applications …

The expansion of western culture throughout the world unavoidably alters and re-shapes the perspective of the peoples engulfed by the "West." The western "universalist" culture engenders a premium on values such as "democracy, individualism, and a high standard of living based on material productivity" (Von Laue, 1987, p. 267; Philips, 1992, p. 80). The encroachment of the western colonial era in the pacific areas of Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands began around 1722 and continues in many forms to the present.

On this Memorial Day weekend, it is altogether fitting and appropriate that we gather today at this sacred place to remember the lives of our progenitors everywhere. From Gettysburg to Hiroshima, from Arlington to Flanders Field, and from the city cemetery to the family plot, we honor our dead ancestors and friends long since stilled. Whether they died on the battle fields of war or perished in the labor of giving birth, we honor them. Whether on the trail to a new life in Oregon or a new chance in Ukraine, they all were the lifeline to our present bright …

Faster Ray Tracing Using Adaptive Grids, Thomas W. Sederberg, Krysztof S. Klimaszewski
Faculty Publications
A new hybrid approach is presented which outperforms the regular grid technique in scenes with highly irregular object distributions by a factor of hundreds, and combined with an area interpolator, by a factor of thousands. Much has been said about scene independence of different acceleration techniques and the alleged superiority of one approach over another. Several theoretical and practical studies conducted in the past have led to the same conclusion: a space partitioning method that allows the fastest rendering of one scene often fails with another. Specialization may be the answer. This has always been pursued, consciously or not, in …

But peeling back the layers of this case reveals the potential for a significant ruling on the constitutional treatment of family relationships, fundamental rights and access to courts for civil proceed with a appeals.

SoxR protein is a redox-responsive transcription factor that governs a regulon of oxidative stress and antibiotic resistance genes in Escherichia coli. Purified SoxR contains oxidized [2Fe-2S] clusters and stimulates in vitro transcription of its target gene soxS up to 100-fold. SoxR transcriptional activity, but not DNA binding, is completely dependent on the [2Fe-2S] clusters; apo-SoxR prepared in vitro binds the soxS promoter with unchanged affinity but does not have transcription activity. Thus, modulation of the SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters was proposed to control the protein's function in transcription. Here, we provide evidence that SoxR with reduced [2Fe-2S] clusters is inactive. Redox …

We report performance measurements of a sub-millimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for astronomical instruments operating with good efficiency in the 30-300 keV photon energy range. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64 × 64 contact stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions. Pulse height spectra were recorded in orthogonal-stripe coincidence mode which demonstrate room-temperature energy resolution < 10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio > 5:1. Good response is also demonstrated at higher energies using a coplanar grid readout configuration. Spatial resolution capabilities finer than the stripe pitch are demonstrated. We present the image of a 133Ba source viewed through a …

Archae (formerly Archaebacteria) comprise an entire kingdom of organisms placed halfway between prokaryotes and eucaryotes in evolution, This class of organisms lacks murein cell wall and is devoid of organelles, yet Archae synthesize and export N-linked and O-linked glycoproteins utilizing only the plasma membrane. Study of glycosylation systems in Archae is extremely interesting because the plasma membrane must perform many functions normally carried out by the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi in eucaryotes. This report represents the first glycosyl transferase system enzyme demonstrated from archae showing a functional relationship with homologous eucaryotic enzymes. Archae dolichyl-phosphoryl-mannose synthase was purified 1070-fold from Thermoplasma …
