Employment Separation And Health Insurance Coverage, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian
Faculty Publications
We study the interrelationship between employment separation and insurance coverage. We first document that employment separation is associated with large reductions in insurance coverage, even conditioning on underlying tastes for insurance. We then show that reducing the cost of insurance through state laws mandating continued access to employerprovided health insurance for the non-employed increases the likelihood of having insurance after separating from a job by 6.7%. These mandates also increase the number of individuals who separate and the total amount of time spent jobless. Finally, at least some of this increased non-employment appears to be spent in productive job search as …

Section 10(B) And The Vagaries Of Federal Common Law: The Merits Of Codifying The Private Cause Of Action Under A Structuralist Approach, Edward A. Fallone

Few issues in the field of securities law have proved as controversial as the legitimacy and proper application of the implied private cause of action for securities fraud under Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and its regulatory counterpart, Rule 10b-5. The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 was expected by many observers to bring about sweeping changes in the implied private cause of action, which critics charge has been abused by overzealous litigants bringing frivolous lawsuits. In his timely article, Professor Fallone argues that most of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act's changes to the …

Pitfalls In Tests For Changes In Correlations, Brian H. Boyer, Michael S. Gibson, Mico Loretan
Pitfalls In Tests For Changes In Correlations, Brian H. Boyer, Michael S. Gibson, Mico Loretan

Correlations are crucial for pricing and hedging derivatives whose payoff depends on more than one asset. Typically, correlations computed separately for ordinary and stressful market conditions differ considerably, a pattern widely termed "correlation breakdown." As a result, risk managers worry that their hedges will be useless when they are most needed, namely during "stressful" market situations. We show that such worries may not be justified since "correlation breakdowns" can easily be generated by data whose distribution is stationary and, in particular, whose correlation coefficient is constant. We make this point analytically, by way of several numerical examples, and via an …

Setting Standards For Parenting - By What Right?, James G. Dwyer
Setting Standards For Parenting - By What Right?, James G. Dwyer

Mental health professionals, like other professionals involved in family
matters, feel constrained when advocating for the interests of children by the belief
that parents are entitled to custody and control of their children's lives, regardless of
what others may think of their parenting behavior, absent severe harm to the children.
This belief is morally untenable, and the legal doctrine of parental rights that is its
concrete embodiment is inconsistent with other well-established legal principles and
should be abandoned. Children alone should have legal rights in connection with their
upbringing, and those rights should include an entitlement to much higher standards …

Language Teaching In India: Issues And Innovations, B Kumaravadivelu

This collected volume on English language teaching (ELT) in India contains 22 articles written by Indian teachers and researchers. The book has been divided into six sections. The first section—“Problematizing ELT in India”—offers a critical, historical perspective along with innovative ideas for making English language learning and teaching meaningful and purposive in modern India. The second section—“Nature of ELT Materials”—demonstrates how the ELT materials used in Indian classrooms are not embedded in local needs and indigenous contexts. The section emphasizes the importance of developing instructional materials that not only make use of the rich linguistic and cultural resources available in …
Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy
Three-Dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method For Slider Air Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, W. Huang, D. B. Bogy
Faculty Publications
The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to solve the three-dimensional nano-scale gas film lubrication problem between a gas bearing slider and a rotating disk, and this solution is compared to the numerical solution of the compressible Reynolds equations with the slip flow correction based on the linearized Boltzmann equation as presented by Fukui and Kaneko [molecular gas film lubrication (MGL) method] [ASME J. Tribol. 110, 253 (1988)]. In the DSMC method, hundreds of thousands of simulated particles are used and their three velocity components and three spatial coordinates are calculated and recorded by using a hard-sphere collision …

Price Theory And Vertical Restraints: A Misunderstood Relation, Alan J. Meese
Price Theory And Vertical Restraints: A Misunderstood Relation, Alan J. Meese
Faculty Publications
The Chicago School of antitrust analysis has exerted a strong influence over the law of vertical restraints in the past two decades, leading the Supreme Court to abandon much of its traditional hostility toward such agreements. Chicago's success has provoked a vigorous response from Populists, who support the traditional approach. Chicago, Populists claim, has improperly relied upon neoclassical price theory to inform the normative and descriptive assumptions that drive its analysis of trade restraints generally and of vertical restraints in particular. This reliance is misplaced, Populists assert, because the real world departs from that portrayed by price-theoretic models and, at …
